Good ol interlaced tomfoolery eh.
Imagine this mod on 3 original xboxes with forza motorsport.
(3 discs & the xboxes connected via lan into a switch or router so they can work together in multi screen.)
Doing this, must look amazing with the right displays on a set of hdmi modded xbox.
ruclips.net/video/RjGbn8Agp7U/видео.html
Speaking of which do you have any softmod tutorial or plans too make what you woud say is the easiest method that would let you upgrade the harddrive easily as well ?
Got an original xbox sitting around for a while without any wiring, controllers or a screen too use but it has a working dvd drive atm, i got a pc i can hook up ide harddrives too but might go sata harddrive with adapter too ide as i got a few 160 - 250 gb drives sitting around which would be plenty of space for the few games id like too get running on one.
There is some xbe modified to make more games run at 720p, but you will need the ram upgrade for them to run good i guess (?, would you be down to make a video about it? I can lend you the modified xbes i have on my computer!
Was wondering about that matrix segment. Glad there’s a hdmi mod for the Xbox. It really looks a lot better. I was also wondering how it compares to Xbox 360 emulation?

I love it!
Even without the mod, I'm always impressed with how these games look like early 360 games.
Yeah especially the 720p games, i still need an original xbox, so I was pretty surprised, most of these games look way better than what my ps2 can do, I still love the ps2 tho
@@daddykarlmarx6183 couldn't the ps2 output 1080i though?
@@ryanambsdorf2859 I know it can modded, but I don't think it can natively, mine isn't modded yet so I don't have 1080 widescreen :/
@@daddykarlmarx6183 Xbox always looked much better than the PS2 imo, I owned the Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 at the time and PS2 looked the worst of the bunch, despite arguably being the best console overall.
LionHeartVIII I still come back to play
MVG must really like this mod, it feels like the strongest recommendation I've seen him make for anything.
Anything original Xbox related he always seems excited about lol.
The origional xbox moding community has been screaming out for this sort of thing for years and the og xbox is his jam.
Liam Scholz Big name in the Xbox hacking scene. he’d ported over a lot of the emulators, etc. So, when your all time favorite system gets an HDMI mod, you gotta cheer.
He would be a good salesman! He makes me appreciate my OG XB a lot.
10:53 Can we just take a moment to appreciate the quality of a game published in 2003, soon to be three console generations back? Looks like it could be current gen to me.
and it will even run on nextgen :) (xsx)
*2006
It's also done by none other than Criterion Games, the Burnout devs. They've always put out technically impressive stuff. Burnout 3/Revenge still pop fantastically today and also ran at a clean 60fps.
@@VexAcer also ran at 60?? black run at 30fps ;)
@@nattila7713 I was referring to the Burnout games when I said 60 if that wasn't clear.
Black does run at 30 although it's still impressive given the effects on display.
Regardless of video output, after nearly 20 years I've forgotten just how good looking the games were for the system. The 80s through to early 2000's was the golden age of gaming. No microtransactions, no multiple editions of the same game, expansion packs (before they were called DLC) actually had some content in them rather than just something tacked on. I never played DOA 3, but I did play DOA 2 on the PS2 and it was a thoroughly enjoyable fighting game.
Nowadays you buy the carcass for a game at full price, then buy all the organs separately...
@@iamdarkyoshi great analogy.
@@iamdarkyoshi You nailed it. But as well as that, the final product will work just as good as Frankenstein's monster.
@referral madness Point taken. I should've clarified: no multiple copies of the same game on the same platform, i.e the number of versions publishers like Ubisoft like to release.
The amount and quality of your content surpasses most full time youtubers. It's not just the show and tell model that has become so common and accepted on this platform. You explain things thoroughly and even pull back the curtain on what goes into console and video game development. Thanks for all the hard work.
The OG XBOX! Love the video MVG. Cannot wait to see your XBL test coming up soon.
Fun Fact: The best way to get high-quality component output from an Xbox nowadays is to get an official Xbox 360 component cable (which were ridiculously overbuilt, and are very common to find nowadays), and convert it to an OG Xbox connector. There's guides online on how to do this, and it takes a lot of fine solder work (and hot glue to layer in some extra protection for the connections) and can be pretty tedious, but the results are amazing.
1:21 "They're not only hard to find, they're also becoming quite expensive" *Laughs in EON GC HD which only outputs in 480p*
... How much is the EON GC HD, again?
@@thevgmlover $145-$150 I think
Xbox supports 720p Xbox win
@@ragingraven7915 How is EON even still alive right now? That is expensive, for what's essentially a component cable solution!
Resolder an official 360 MS lead, it's very, very close to the best can get. Way better than Chinese progressive lead. And can get optical sound out versions.
Man, so many of these OG XBOX games still look so good. Good stuff as usual, MVG.
10:57 Nope, I'm watching this because I could never miss a video with this amount of aussie accent
Ditto
My jaw dropped when you showed Tony Hawk Underground running. It looks so good and takes me back.
MVG. Dude you make some of the best content available for us who marvel at the technology that brings these devices together. Thank you brah.
don't call him a bra, that's ignorant. He's the tits!
Console graphics took a massive leap with the Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube, and PS2. Since then, it's basically been small improvements each generation with diminishing returns.
Most of the games shown in this video look amazing, especially when output at these resolutions. Squint and you could probably convince yourself these are modern releases.
totally agree! some xbox games look even better than certain modern games in my opinion.
Not being able to output in higher resolution at an acceptable frame rate IS an indication of significant improvement. Emulation has really increased my enjoyment of old titles, after ripping a bunch of my PS3 games and trying 720p titles in 4K has been amazing. I don't want to play on the original console anymore if I can avoid it. You can tell they are older games, especially for PS2, so there have been more progress than just higher resolutions but it really do make a big difference.
Depending on the title though. The difference between GTA SA and GTA IV or V is enormous.
for me the biggest jump was from the SNES to the N64, such a big and massive leap
This just makes me more excited to see what supported Xbox games will look like on Xbox Series X, as my original Xbox died. :(
Really wanted to take a minute to say thanks for the content and quality of, that you have consistently been releasing since you started your channel. As someone who is making a living in tech with a passion for games I really appreciate having this to watch at the end of a day. My work projects often take the fun out of tech. Gaming always brings it around full circle for me. Your incredibly well informed and constructed videos are really enjoyable to me and it definitely brings the fun back to tech for me at the end of a strenuous day. Thanks a lot for all of the enjoyable content, hope you continue to make content like this for years to come. Your shows are amazing!
"You're watching this because you want the best video quality out of an original xbox"
Lol I've never even owned an xbox
same, where i lived owning an xbox was like something no one ever did. Probably something to do with the difficulty in bootlegging games.
I live in Argentina and like most South America, nobody had the first Xbox
lol I'm watching this cuz I'm such a geek for console hardware
@@toiletpapermerchant9310 I found it the easiest. I softmodded mine back when I was 13 and set up an FTP server. No messing around with hardware, just plug in a game and memory card and follow some steps online.
@@codezero7981 me too!
With Xbox emulation still being fairly rough (better than years ago, but still) the Xbox is probably the most important of the "retro" consoles to get modern treatments. Still confuses me how little attention this massively popular console has gotten over the years (which is thankfully increasing as the years go by).
Got nostalgic watching some of those games.
Most of my retro games are stored at my fathers place in Switzerland and I‘m living in Indonesia.
Every time I go home I spend some time with my old consoles and watching your videos makes me want to take an extra Holliday just to go home and mode all my consoles to get the best picture quality possible :-)
Doa3 looks absolutely freaking amazing through HDMI!
Great video brotha! I have one of the Chimeric adapters and it works great. I think I'll hold out until Dan's Xbox Digital solution comes out due to it's video scaling options, but this looks really great. Especially for the price. Glad to see the Xbox getting all this love lately.
The only problem I have with Dans is that it takes away the LAN, even though you can still FTP through WiFi it’s still not ideal.
Great work here MVG. I’m holding off for the Citrus mod, as it’s likely to output at 1080p like his other digital mods. But for $60 this is an absolute steal
Awesome stuff!
The only thing missing was a MClassic test, to check if it could improve even more!
Thank you for your great work, you are the best! Stay safe!
RetroRGB did at the end of his video. Said the results with 720p on non modded xbox with this hdmi had anything noticeable. Said he couldnt notice any difference in 480p
I bought a Samsung DLP HDTV (well… it wasn’t full HD as it’s max resolution was 1080i, but I digress) in the spring of 2005 and the HD cables I purchased were official XBOX Component Cables with TOS-Link out. It didn’t have a box like the HD AV Pack you’ve shown. My cables are similar to the component cables that came with the pre-HDMI fat XBOX 360s (but the 360 wasn’t out yet). I’ve always been confused by the HD AV Pack and have wondered what the benefit to the pack (if any) was.
I have been waiting SOOOO long for something like this to exist. I've had my Halo CE PAL Xbox softmodded to use the NTSC BIOS with a set of Monster HD Component cables for a long time now, but I've always wondered if a true digital HDMI solution would ever come to market.
I'll be waiting eagerly for your review of the other digital solution that's in the pipeline, but at 60 USD, this looks like a winner.
you can also hack a 360 component cable to work with OG if you're handy with a soldering iron
Thanks for the idea. Have one laying around somewhere and I really dislike by OGX cheapo component cable. Likely easier solution than to replace wires on that cheapo one.
@@jothain you're welcome. There are a few good walkthroughs on YT. I made one myself a while ago and its just as good as the official AV pack.
How the hell did I not know this?
I have a few 360 cables lying around still and my generic component cable has always seemed to produce a kinda washed out image. Looks like I'm going hunting thru my attic cable bin and likely mildly burning myself this afternoon. Yeehaw.
@@skuzzyj get another component cables or change some tv settings for me i turned off "noise reduction" i also increased sharpness and color saturation
I use some good quality component cables and run them to an upscaler (the OSSC) and from that to an HDMI TV. With that, the oG Xbox video quality looks fantastic. Would have loved to see you compare the xboxhdmi to the quality from an upscaler. Thanks keep up the great work!
Any lag in that? Personally I love playing games with no lag. For me the best upscaler is CRT tube, it smooths things out automatically.
@@andrewnorris5415 ossc is zero lag
Andrew Norris there’s a very slight almost imperceptable lag, but if your TV has a ‘game mode’ it almost completly eliminates it. It’s fantastic.
I'm actually really impressed with how well the image is with the mod. Makes it look like a generation up.
For those using it on a 32in or smaller tv I think the cheap component cables do the work just fine.
The official OG Xbox component cables look perfectly fine on my 32". Kind of surprised so many don't think the OEM Microsoft component cables look very good.
Last time I was this early, MVG's eyebrows were thicker than his beard.

Careful what you say people, you might get Putin a coma.
You weren't first!

@@rmkkkk nobody cares
Been waiting for this for a long time! Really happy to see this.
SOLD! More than the quality of the out put I think the convenience factor of having all my consoles outputting to HDMI is one of the biggest selling points.
9:11 The image looks a bit bright with the XboxHDMI mod. Thought I'd point that out.
Noticed that, too, but if the output is tweakable it shouldn’t be an issue.
Same thing I noticed... I kind of liked the hair darker one better but, 2 each their own...
5:21
Seems like that's configurable
I'm surprised that out of all the titles being tested for this mod, you didn't get to try out Far Cry Instincts, which was also quite the memorable title for the original Xbox
yup definetly a good game. the level editor was amazing!
There is a reason why you are called the MODern Vintage Gamer.
THANK YOU, I'm trying to make a hub for preserving Older Consoles, and videos with mods like these really help!
Here I am, glad I picked up the HD AV Pack ata swap meet 2 years ago for $5. lol
Man... Burnout 3? DOA 3? Soul Calibur 2? Black? Gunvalkyrie?!? You're giving me some serious nostalgia vibes here.
I actually have the OG HDMI Pack. I worked at best buy during that era and bought ALL the component cables and such from that generation. Still have my GC Component cables and the PSP Go Dock w/component cables, too!
Was hoping for Ryzee's internal mod but happy to see this and get a couple ordered. I believe Ryzee mentioned he found the necessary pins off of the Xcalibur video encoder to get the video signal. Definitely getting the chimeric for my debug kits though.
Thanks for sharing!
Hot damn MVG, the songs on your bandcamp go hard O>O
I picked up the component official cable set back in the day. And about 3 moths ago came across a used component official box at a goodwill store for $5 for my second xbox
Shame about the lack of internal upscaling, odd that they haven't implemented this when most other HDMI kits do so.
This is a low-cost solution based upon www.analog.com/en/products/adv7511.html - it does not contain an upscaler.
Don’t get me wrong - this is an amazing thing and I’m planning to get it, but it’s far apart in features possible with an FPGA. This is a dedicated ASIC converting the signal to HDMI.
Ratownik Na Emigracji that’s fair enough, I guess my thoughts are that anyone who is interested in doing a mod like this is likely to want to do it ‘properly’ and if that means paying more, so be it. Not sure what market this is appealing to, if you want a simple low cost solution you’d probably accept the results you get with a pound cable, as flawed as that cable is.
720P upscaling is coming in a future update via a firmware update.
@@DustinHolden awesome! Thank you for making this for everyone. I couldn't have imagine this getting even more awesome. Can't wait. ;)
You don't really gain any real resolution with an upscaler.
Upscaling with nearest neighbor will always look the sharpest but you're basically just stretching what's there, as nearest neighbor just means no filtering.
This is not like an emulator where you can increase the internal resolution if you want.
Man, I detest all preorders. _Loathe_ them, even.
I may have to make a single exception. This is, without a doubt, the highlight of my 2020 💚
I’d love something like this to help me record older games, but I don’t have a clue about soldering. 😒
Good thing original xboxes are cheap - you can afford to make a few mistakes
@@stoltobot well yes, but It still isn't worth doing it in this case. You better of buying a converter or asking someone to do it.
@@VDani16 what about buying or tearing spare mother boards to experiment on?
@@VDani16 How's it not worth it if you could do it for around $75-80? Soldering can't be that high of a fail rate
super easy to learn.
So wonderful. cant wait to get mine back in the day, i won the Limited edition Mt dew Xbox. Really want this upgrade
Always excited when you release a new video! Thanks for the review on this
I used to own an original Xbox. Jet Set Radio was one of the titles that grabbed me. The music, visuals, animation, controls. There was nothing like it. Same goes for Panzer Dragoon Orta, but it could get tough depending on difficulty, and those pandora box missions were challenging.
But the quality of visuals, and audio was beautiful. It was ahead of its time.
I've got both the svideo and component monster cables for the Xbox. I could only afford the svideo one when I first bought it and it made such a difference I could not believe. Then I wasn't hesitant to get a component one cause I didn't think it would be much a difference. It was an expensive purchase but it was a noticeable difference again. Not as much as the jump from composite to svideo but it was still definitely worth it. If you can find the monster cables I definitely suggest picking them up. Man I miss playing that console. Gonna have to pull it out storage and do the mods it needs.
I never knew an XBOX game would look so lush! Thanks for the awesome review as always MVG.
Nice to see Hoffman’s album on your shelf aswell as the classic action replay cart for the a500.
MVG: you’re watching this because you want the best possible video quality out of the original Xbox
Me: i dont have a TV with component inputs
I'm surprised you didn't bring it up but it's worth mentioning that XOSVP has been sold out for MONTHS and i'm not sure it's coming back in stock. Of course, it's an open-source implementation so you can order your own PCB's and go down that route but XBOXHDMI provides the first readily available solution we've had in a while.
With this HDMI mod you can see the true power of the original Xbox! I've always thought it was madly impressive in terms of graphics and I love that there's such a large community for it!
Another great Xboz video. I personally am using s-video on a 32" Sony Trinitron CRT. But I have a pound hdmi cable and the HD component pack. The HD AV PACK is the best for picture quality of the 2 but it doesn't stretch to full screen is uses black bars so it is sharper but obviously smaller image
At the end of PS1 Digital HDMI exploit video, MVG says to stay "tuned" for upcoming Xbox HDMI exploit and a "tune" plays. The same "tune" plays at the beginning of this video!
I love such details! Go Go MVG💗
Wow, absolutely amazing!! Congrats 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Now THAT was cool little intro-music! I immediately got into it ^^
IMHO aftermarket component cables do their job perfectly fine. You can connect analog component to for example AV receiver, that can even upscale or even deinterlace analog signal and output through HDMI. Sure nothing will beat bit-perfect digital video output from GPU, but I've tested direct component (with aftermarket cable) on PDP and through upscaling with my Yamaha receiver on PC LCD monitor and quality is great. Xbmc interface with HD res. is razor sharp.
Creeping up on 500k MVG! Well done!
So many games I loved as a kid you showed, stongest childhood memories from munches oddysee and just set radio
Now we need a digital hdmi solution for the PS2. Yes, I know there’s hdmi cables for the system but an actual internal hdmi mod would be great
Will probably take a while since they just released the PS1 digital HDMI mod. It's the holy grail for gamers after all, being able to make their PS2 games look decent on HD displays without emulators.
Screw it, I'll make a single exception and put in a preorder. This is too good not to have. 💚
I hope they include some nice Kynar or PTFE insulated bus wire for the solder connections though instead of that vinyl-coated speaker wire I'm seeing in their pics lol. Good wire makes a *HUGE* difference!
I have the Xbox HD AV pack. I didn't realize it was so rare. I also have the official component cables for the GameCube and PS2.
U legend dude, Without u mate. We wouldnt have this shit today so thank u my dude :D
Crafting of a game, the animation and artwork stand out so much. Appreciate the beauty a little bit more now. (Although my re-soldered (MS Offical) 360 lead with opt sound out is very close to this I suspect, esp. in 480p).
This looks like an awesome solution! Very informative video!
A year ago in a retro videogame shop in Paris I paid 12 euros for a brand new official Xbox component... It was the best deal of the year for me hands down. The image is just amazing plugged into an ossc with some scanlines
Looks awesome. I just wish it included an audio split option, for those of us who don't want the TV sound output.
I love it! I installed this my self with the newer version from Dustin Xbox hd plus. Looks fantastic and clear pure hd
are you in the Los Angeles Area by chance?? how much would yo charge for this service??
Glad to see it in action 👍
Pretty cool. I have a box which converts an S-video signal to digital HDMI. I use that with a component cable for 720p and 1080i on my classic Xbox. The results are rather good. With its 1TB hard drive it's made my Xbox a great emulation system.
Though I have to admit, my PC has taken its place as I now use EmuVR to play retro games in virtual reality with highly realistic CRT displays. It truly has to be seen in VR to be believed.
The Xbox is obviously still great for Xbox games which I sometimes play. TimeSplitters 2 for example.
Thanks as always for making extremely helpful videos, MVG!
Now, let's cross our fingers the PS2 will get a mod like this.
That Conker/ A Clockwork Orange intro gets me everytime
I've been waiting on this for years!! The OG Xbox is only partially tapped into. It has so much more to give. Can you do a video on why an Emulator on the OG Xbox is so difficult to create? We have them for so many other consoles. There is something tricky going on.
obscure tech relatef to the gfx chip
The original HD pack is fantastic, I was lucky to find one back in the day. This product looks great tbh.
Who would have guessed the composite cables I bought for my Xbox would be worth so much 18 years later.
Im covered with my component cables, and rgb scart for coinops, what a console!
I've been using the Psyclone component cables through an OSSC and am pretty satisfied with that for now. The Psyclone cables were what I owned back in the early 2000's and I decided to hunt them down again on ebay. If Citrus has major improvements, such as upscaling, I may consider then.
I've had a great experience with the Kaico hdmi for both the Xbox and Gamecube.
Xb one doesnt do any scaling but i didnt notice any artifcating like MVG pointed out with the Pound cable. Worth a look for ppl not wanting HDMI without modding.
Their Gamecube one is straight digital to hdmi and looks amazeballs. Only works if your GC has digital AV though
Also tried the hyperkin hdmi for GC and it was pure garbage. Avoid like the plague. It was soo blurry and had interference on the signal not to mention needing external power to run
You should do a video on ReShade, a DLL you install for games on PC that enables the use of custom fanmade shaders that can dramatically improve the graphics of old games, adding ambient occlusion, bloom, depth of field, raytracing and other effects. It also works with some emulators, I am using it with RPCS3 for example. It is a bit complicated to get into though, so having youtubers like you spread the word on it goes a long way to make it more popular, which inturn means more people will program new and amazing shaders for it
10/10 mustache and beard mvg
MVG: *Starts talking about 1080i on the OG Xbox*
Me: Oh boy time for Enter The Matrix footage
It's 2020 and now Japan pre-ordering Xbox series X in high numbers, how the tides have turned lol
Great video MVG :)
Lets be honest, Ive never even owned an Xbox, I just like your vids :)
Back in the day I used to have this cable or dongle that output RGBHV signals directly from the Xbox which allowed me to connect to a computer monitor via RGB SCART, DVI or individual BNC cables for each signal. Playing HD games (and movies for that matter) before it was called HD.
Small note, but I wish you would put the game titles on screen when you show video excerpts. Maybe you do and I don't notice, or it is in the subtitles. However, while I could figure out most since I was old enough to have played most of those games when they came out, others I was unsure about.
I'm wondering what the game was at 11:45 myself.
@@siterrill He published a list in the comments. Apparently Unreal Championship 2, but yeah would be a bit easier if he would show the titles on screen. Still, I appreciate the effort he puts into these videos.
Low IQ players always need to know music or game titles they can't find themselves so stupid people
I also notice the No name Component cables also don't have a Optical audio port like the Xbox AV pack does. and the alternative for the gamecube is a Wii and getting the offical component cables for Wii. They can be found for less than $50 instead of the $200 gamecube ones.
Where can I get the music at the intro? Its very good, and your other music is excellent!

Damn, some of those games look like 360 games with that mod
I've recently finished installing the XboxHD+ (what its called now) and it wasn't easy but way worth it!
I made my own Original Xbox Component Cable. I used an Xbox 360 component cable for the wires. It's properly shielded, looks great. Night and day from the cheap Amazon cables.
It would be cool to see you include this as a way to get a cheap, very cheap, GOOD signal out of your Xbox.
My Monster component cables are good enough for me for now.
Games really looked great on the original Xbox, it's amazing.
