It's impressive that we always focus on image quality, but the sound from this mod is absolutely beautiful.
And that sound was compressed by youtube, don't forget. Thats amazing stuff!
looks are easy to show audio not
The sound is good, but the 3d still hurts my eyes just like the PS1 always did even when I was a kid. It's the only system that does it too. Even PS1 games on a PS2 are fine. So it's just the PS1. lol
@Sped Racer I think you're talking about bilinear filtering (and even trilinear) where the textures are smoothed out. It certainly looks better (unless it goes too extreme like N64) However doom and quake (which had pixelation before 3d accelerated versions existed) were fine. I think it's because the PS1 gets odd texture distortion which is corrected when you emulate the games or play them on PS2.

you will never, EVER be able to tell which is which between the source audio and youtube's AAC in a blind A/B/X test if they were levelled correctly (cause that would be the most noticeable part of youtube's processing).
RUclips does literally nothing besides:
- bringing the levels down to its internal "baseline"
- encoding to AAC (which went a long way from mp3 days).
The main feeling of quality that you perceive in the MGS clip comes from stereo mix that people did and a nonexisting noise floor. AAC encode won't mess (much) with any of that.
The output from this is incredible.
It's true, I don't think anything else can be seen better than that.
There's a similar kind of mod coming out for PS2. If that comes out on time, than it would be a great value for money as it could be used for both PS1 and PS2. Great video as always MVG!
what's the name? where can i find it

@@adityavaibhav4941 thank you
@@adityavaibhav4941 This thing sounds perfect for me. I got a old PS2 that I'm going to softmod soon for modern day use and this'll make it look great on my tv
I'm also waiting
My PS2 has ic problem which needs to be warmed up before it'll display properly
That ps1 intro is so legendary
Always quality content from MVG.
3:37 I heard "Open Source Can Converter" and that will be my new nickname for the OSSC from now on.
I do like to convert all of my cans to open source eventually
OSCC > OSSC
EDIT: I actually did hear "Open Source Can Converter" at 3:57 😂
I love this solution, but mostly I love your coverage of it. Thanks for the clear and concise review!
Whenever your videos are close to the end I feel a subtle sadness, like if a friend is going away or my prefered teacher's class is wrapping up.
Great content as always. I know your thoughts about it, but you would be an amazing full time youtuber hehe
Great video MVG.
I also appreciate the flexibility of keeping the OG outputs in a HDMI mod. Eg, the case study of hooking up to a VGA monitor, whilst using the standard multi out for the audio component would be a favourable option for those wanting to make a retro gaming cabinet or something of that nature. 👌
Good to hear, keep us posted on those other options! and as always thanks for the upload
Dang MVG, you're looking sharp as hell with the grey streaks in your beard. Nice.
Installed mine this weekend along with X-Station. Waiting on 3D printed tray from Laser Bear Industries to arrive for it to be complete. Gorgeous video and sound. Definitely worth it if you enjoy PS1 gaming. Especially considering how prices for games like “shmups” and rpg’s have skyrocketed. Crazy!!
Thanks again. You've given some good advice in the past on modifications and emulation. I always like these kind of videos.
I will have to save for this mod but I hope I might it done on one of my ps1/psx.
Hope I can get an order in, I cannot wait! Plan to go through the RPG's I never go around too like the Suikoden and Wild Arms series. I have the PSIO but am also looking forward to the Xstation. Might have to get two of these consoles done.
Very cool! I enjoy geeking out over stuff like this.
“A Hind D ??? Colonel, what’s a Russian gunship doing here ??? “ THAT NEVER GETS OLD :)
What is he actually saying?? All I can hear is "a hind d"
anew742 how come ? On my side it sounds pretty clear. And it has subs on lol. And I literally quoted the exact dialogue.
@@bjoestar9439 Wait he's actually saying "a hind d"? I thought it was a subtitle mistake lol
What does a hind d mean?
@@anew742 A Hind is a Russian helicopter in real life, not something made up for the game. But I assume the joke is "Hind D" sounds like "hiney" and that Snake is talking about butts.
MI-24 Hind is a Russian gunship
The soldering work at 3:03 is legendary. No wonder it looks so good if that kind of work was put into this mod.
its really not that complicated as it looks though.
Pretty easy with some flux and a hot air station 😎
I think you mean "soddering" ;-)
@@kevinherring4631 the funny thing is he's Australian and has an Aussie accent but then pronounces soldering in the weird American way.
since this was released 3 minutes ago (At time of this comment was posted), obviously I haven't watched the whole video yet
but I want to say I love all your vids man, keep it up :D
I just watched the video, now I want to get a PS1 and mod it XD
and thanks for the heart!!!
Dude this guy's videos are the fucking BOMB! His videos are the best thing since sliced breead!
Not gonna lie, I'm waiting for something like this for PS2.
If you can get a hold of a launch window ps3 their known for being perfect ps2 hardware level emulation
I use component cables to my 4k TV. Not gonna lie, it's not magically good, but it's still very good nonetheless. My TV handles the PS2 video signals quite well.
Well, there is something in the works
@@jabadahut50 and if you DO decide on that, be sure to send it to a modder or a repair shop to have the inside cleaned and the thermal paste redone. That's the BIGGEST issue for the YLOD: Sony cheaped out on thermal paste and it was complete crap. So over time, the thermal paste gets brittle and doesn't disperse heat as it should. That mixed with years of dust in the console causes overheating.
The creator of this Mod were initially working on a PS2 chip to do the same thing, but decided to do PS1 first. They're picking back up on the PS2 chip right now, and will be doing the OG Xbox afterword
Oh man, definitely one of my favorite systems, with one of the best libraries, of all time! I wish I wasn't such a novice at soldering, I definitely want this mod!
I didn't even know how badly I wanted this mod until I saw this video. And the sound too!
BTW... epic beard, man! Seriously suits you well!
That new outro is nice, I had no idea you composed/sourced your own music MVG!
Jesus... The audio sold me on this. Incredible!
You don't know how excited I was when I saw Ehrgeiz on your monitor!
Nice! Your channel is awesome. I miss your chiptune soundcloud though.
Your content is always high quality, feels like I'm watching better than peak G4TV programming.
Superb job as always.
Every video on this channel is super high quality content. Everything is well researched, well tested, and well conveyed. I really appreciate the stuff you put out. Not sure why you don't have a million subs yet.
~taps expecting MVG video~
“oh, looks like it’s being hosted by 1980s Sean Connery... bit weird”
~later~
“tell me more about cheap scanlines, you scotch egg, you”
I love your channel so much! God bless you and your family ❤️
It looks and sounds great! I am genuinely impressed!
Man just seeing ehrgeiz behind you made me happy. One of the first games I put on my psclassic
HOFFMAN vinyl in shot. Nicely done!
I love your channel, and also am digging that beard!
Nothing better than watching some MVG while sitting on the shitter after a 12 hour shift
I love the new intro and outro 🥰
Your channel inspired me to create the PS3 emulation box of my dreams and I'm loving it. Wasn't lucky enough to have the original PS3 with native PS2 support built in so I took matters into my own hands. Cleaned out the dust, re applied thermal paste, put in an SSD, slapped a jailbreak on it and now it can run PS1, PS2, & PSP games perfectly. Recommend patching all the games with a widescreen hack or patching the games to be ran as a PS classic for that nice built in anti aliasing.
I'd love to see this hooked up to an HD Trinitron. We had a 32" WEGA back in the day that had an HDMI input. Would probably look damn good.
As a CRT enthusiast and Toshiba Theatrewide HD CRT owner, we hardly ever use those. The HDMI to RGB converters in those are DOGSHIT. I see no point to scaling it on an HD CRT, doing a native RGB bypass mod with BNC connectors on the back, and a direct RGB input from the ps1 is optimal in this scenario.
The digital sound is soo strange, like old movies from vhs or the 80s movies sound, I like it.
I just use ps1 emulator on laptop hooked to hdmi to TV. Then adjust settings to get a lesser quality more towards original but upscale enough to make it slightly better. Vs just cranking everything up to max and having it not even look original.
I had to pause at the Metal Gear Solid audio demonstration. I don't think I've -ever- heard anything that clear out of that game outside of emulation, and even that can be a mixed bag depending on your settings
7:50 pull the plug? think you mean pull the trigger lol
*flatline noise*
Cool video. I bought the component cable por ps2 a few moths ago and improves a lot the image quality, it would be amazing see the same games with the hdmi output.
This is great. I'm keen to ad this to my ps1. I'm excited to see the xbox setup as well.
I love your channel!
Wow! That is amazing, because with even with external converters/upscalers the image was terrible! Well done for the awesome mods.
wow that image really looks amazing. didnt know there were such hardware things
Great video! It's always great to see new hardware being created for retro/vintage consoles
Are there any comparisons with this and a PS2 w/ HDMI running the games that way?
The Street Fighter issue looks identical to when you send a 480p signal to a 480i CRT.
Before he moved out, my neighbor gave me a vintage 2006 Sony Bravia LCD TV. It's from an era when flat-screens still weighed a lot (seriously, this thing is a 40" or so and it weighs 70lb...insane), but it has direct composite input. There's something so satisfying about connecting a Sony Playstation 1 to a Sony TV :)
I have a PSONE with a RGB cable from retrogamingcablesUK conected to a framemeister with the exit HDMI conected to an Mclassic and looks the same (or better) as the PS1Digital. I am extremly happy with the framemeister.
Framemeister is a lot more expensive though isn't it?
@@svenbtb It is relative. If you are only going to use it for one console, it is a waste of money. But if you have a decent collection of retro machines it is cheap considering the good results. I have 14 consoles connected to the framemeister, even consoles in which I have HDMI adapters like my Wii, Gamecube and Dreamcast go through the framemeister before going to my TV and the results are amazing. In the case of Gamecube forcing 480p with Swiss, going through an EON MK II, through a framemeister to rescale to 1080p and finally through the Mclassic it is glorious as seen.
9:59 - 👍👏 Keeping the existing AV port = lightgun connectivity for use on CRTs.
What a time to be alive ^^. I bet that Cyclone 10 beast could easily be used to map the entire system
This is actually really cool. I was just recently having issues getting the PS1 to work with the framemiester, so I might have a look at this. The big issue I have is with games like Chrono Cross and it’s 240p/480i switching for the menus. The framemiester doesn’t handle this well at all, so this might be a good alternative.
Great job documenting and showcasing this mod for the PS1! I have to ask, why no Sega Saturn content on your channel?
Really cool, I'm surprised this wasn't available sooner. Or maybe, this has been known about it just hasn't been in a commercial product?
Mvg rocking that badass beard. Looking good man!
I have that same Commodore monitor, have had it since 1984 and grew up gaming on it.
I was interested in picking this up, but I need to prioritize both getting a house and a new pc first. But would be so cool to get this, and an xstation, and if someone would make a new custom tiny PSU, preferably GaN, I would like to get them all and also make a custom smaller/thinner than PSone case. Another cool mod would be a Bluetooth or RF mod for each of the controllers similar to NES classic.
Love that beard ! Looks damn cool on you !
Definitely going to get one of these and the Optical Drive Emulator that is being released as well.
OMG! @ 4:48 Gran Turismo was a high profile PlayStation one release to me... I played that game all the time!
Would love to hear soundtracks collected with it. It's especially useful for games that make soundtrack on the fly out of samples, like Civilization II, Vagrant Story etc.
It doesn’t look perfect, But this is how you remember these games looking
>Filters
And sounding. Man, that RE2 music took me way back.
I'm tempted to try this. If I could improve my skills though. I have some experience but I want to improve more first.
9:17 Yes! Already I'm sold!
This is awesome !
this is my favorite channel 🤟🏻
Im actually impressed i didn't know that actually existed, i never seen this clear image with an PS1 !
The beard looks great on you!
Hmmm, I may have to try this myself, and open up installs for it. Shall see...
Interesting review as always, MVG! Do you have a recommendation of a video where we can see the mod performed? I'd like to see the actual work required. Thanks!
It seems very interesting and a testament to the Retro communities dedication to keeping these old consoles alive. However I think I'm going to skip on this for now not only because my PlayStation is a pu 22 so it's not compatible but also I use a scart to HDMI converter and the image is pretty solid so maybe down the line I'll check this out.
Looks beautiful. I want.
That looks and sounds insanely good.
I hope the OG Xbox implementations are cheaper, otherwise my wife will kill me when I buy one lol.
Those mgs clips sound so crisp
God damn, that looks amazing.
This + the Piso would be the ultimate PSX unit. As an aside, while Pound cables are not "top of the line", I can say first hand that their current revision Xbox HDMI cable is really good, and their customer service is impressive! I think it would be worth comparing their current cable to the internal solutions in a future video.
it is a good thing to know this tricks for original ps1 hardware I still love to play ps1 games on ps vita with sharpscale I think it's better than ps1 classic mini tho :) nice video MVG!
Awesome bro, I love FF
I am really excited for the OG XBOX Digital solution as the resolutions on the that console are high so digitally should look super nice
That sound quality is spot on 🙂👍
Everything I try to Fix/mod with a soldering iron ends up worse and/or in the bin.I will never learn ; ) great vid bud.
Definitely exposes dithering but i honestly enjoy the retro-dithered look. Thanks for sharing this mod!
Holy crap, you weren't shitting when you said soldering skills are needed. I would consider myself a competent solderer, but I don't have hot air or microscopes laying around so I think I will leave to the installing pros listed, that is when the boards are back in stock.
That outro music though~
And here we have Modern Vintage Gamer doing a quick video.....Just before heading of to his local Sean Connery look alike contest.
Man, I got to watch Voltuar install a beta version of this and now get to watch MVG playtest it? Heck to the yes!
Found an SCPH-5501 two days ago for $40 CAD. Going to order my PS1Digital once they come in Sept. I’m so stoked to play Xenogears on this beauty!
Although older consoles can be modded to output newer signals, their original output was intended for CRT TVs with all of its quirks, so I always try to get RGB cables for those consoles who support it. But I'm sure many AV enthusiasts will love this video!
I love it! i wonder if they could do this for the PS2. I would really like that.
Which capture device are you using if you don't mind me asking?
I have three different playstations for different modifications, i think the only clean one i have is the newer style ps1, but this console was an absolute beast for the time, and still looks great if you can upscale it well!
GOOD JOB MVG!
Kinda going the other way here :)
Starting to prefer composite cable over RGB scart in some 3D PS1 games, especially those with heavy dithering.
Find that things tend to blend nicer with in the blurrier image and I don't play on a gigantic TV so I don't mind the loss of sharpness.
I for one like the new music, kinda didnt love the old one! Great video btw!
MVG gets beard, Techmoan gets beard, hm... I need to check other channels I follow
Hell, I have a beard and I had been shaving my face everyday for basically twenty years now.
The world is falling apart and we have all lowered our standards considerably
I noticed at 1:20 you mentioned Composite cables that came with PS1, here in the UK they came with an RF out adapter and those were arguably worse than composite.
Being a retro purist can be pricey but options are always a good thing. I'd love to see a comparison between between PS1Digital vs PS3 emulation vs PS1 classic vs a Pi.
