      Came here to comment the same. Sat here laughing my ass off trying not to wake up my wife. DF sometimes has moments like that and they just get you because they're just so unexpected. John is a funny guy (and/or whoever actually edited the video, which I guess may have also been John)
      Also +1 for memories of sleepovers and all night gaming sessions when I was a kid.

    I remember my old friend from the 90's we used to play Doom with link cable for hours. He brought his 13 inch CRT TV from his home and it was ridiculous to setup. We ended up placing the TV on top of our school textbooks so that we had even viewing angle. My room used to get so hot we needed two fans to cool inside my room.
    The gaming back then used to be about gaming in purest form. It's kinda hard to explain to anyone that wasn't alive for it. The game used to be fun to play. Most had an awesome intro cutscene to hype us at the beginning, it was mandatory to not skip them because we loved it. The games were presented in a different way. Good old times!

      So what people don't understand is how new and rare these experiences were. The concept of 3d gaming was very new and exciting. There were a handful of rudimentary 3d games on the SNES and Genesis. Once the ps1 and Saturn hit, it was a revolution. It was a sign of a change, of a new era. It was a defining era in gaming. Sure the PC crowd had 3d games prior but this was the first time 3d was the target for the masses. The gulf between affordability for console and PC was bigger back then. Also online play was nearly non existent. Having to find friends, before cellphones and web groups, with the same hardware and software was challenging if you wanted to play a link cable game. Next one of you would have to have either and extra tv or a portable one. The odds were not with you but if you did make the connection it was magical. It was glorious. Best day of your life.

I think next time i'll take out the old stuff and see what would be nice for a 4 person experience. I'm mostly thinking about Dreamcast, GC and maybe PS2/Xbox if I find any good 4 player games.

    • @PLAYER_42069
      @PLAYER_42069 4 года назад +14

      @@pgr3290 Emulation is NOT Game Preservation. It's just a way of approximating how the game played vs. playing the actual game the way it was meant to be played on its original hardware using the original peripherals. This is important from a technical and artistic stand point because we're losing games that are just 20 years old. They're more or less gone, but things like this allow us to preserve those games on a 1:1 scale versus sloppy emulation.

      @@PLAYER_42069 As soon as you digitise the output of a console only designed and equipped with analogue out then essentially you're modifying the way the games were authentically played and viewed back in the day. I understand the point you made but it's moot even if you're a hardliner preservationist. For the vast majority emulation and enhancement is the best way to play old titles.

      Ricky H If one can still be found in good condition that isn’t overpriced. That and CRTs are bulky units, so there would be a heavy shipping charge applied to the buyer if the seller sells it online or in the other case the buyer would need a vehicle large enough to support the amount of room needed to fit one for transport.

    The best comparison would have been with a PSTV running Adrenaline and Sharpscale plugin with HDMI output as the PSTV runs PS1 games via hardware, not emulation as it has the PSP CPU inside it which natively runs PS1 CPU code. MLIG also did a video on the PSTV with sharpscale.

    interesting tech and glad it exists... the problem is, these boutique kits are very expensive and will sell out in no time -- once the production is halted, they will probably never be sold again. a simpler and arguably better option is to get yourself a 20" CRT on the cheap from a local seller and play your retro games as intended. the flat screen CRTs from 2005 ish have component and s-video inputs and will make all ps1/ps2 games look fantastic. a wire shelving unit will allow you to fit all of your retro gaming hardware within an 18"x36" footprint which is very reasonable for those who have limited space.

    I always think that I played all the good PSX games but I guess not. iS- internal section and the featured Raycrisis, Ray Tracers & RayStorm are now on my playlist for next week. That PSX library was magical and new fan translations released as late as 2020.
    The Saturn ain´t bad but its solid library isn´t remotely on this level. It sucks though how obscure and often never rereleased or remastered many good Saturn games still are. Sega really needs to get on that.

    this may actually be the best way to play ps1 games today on more modern TV sets.
    Specifically the games that utilized the hand drawn backgrounds in The Resident Evil and Final Fantasy Games.

    The amount of creativity during the 5th gen in general and esp Ps1 was pretty outstanding. So many great games didn't get the marketing or sales they deserved and you showed one...Disruptor, fantastic 60fps first person shooter. Stuff like Omega Boost, Silent Bomber, EInhander, Vanark, Colony Wars, Armored Core, Brave Fencer Musashi, Ace Combat + many more. Loads of innovation and great content. The 6th gen keep it going too.

    Great work guys love the channel, you have one hell of a set up there in the studio, looks amazing :). The BVM I have is an interesting one, not sure if any are around anymore, but its in pristine condition and I love it, It's the EV1629 Series Widescreen from Electronic visuals in Woking Surrey in the UK. This BVM is a tinkers paradise as it has no digital OSM, all good old fashioned pots and flip switches on the front pullout board. More info on request :) happy to share if you need anything :)

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 4 года назад

      The issue is, official lasers are not manufactured anymore, just aftermarket ones which are kinda bad and dont last as long and if you are willing to buy a used lens assembly, not only a good working one can be a bit expensive, you dont know how much it was used before and how much will last. That is why agree to John: I hate optical lenses from old consoles, I really want ODEs for every single one of them.

    Already ordered the PSIO waiting for PS1Digital to orders to open back up soon. Man I'm amped to check out Xenogears on this. Also found a 20 pin model Saturn locally for $150 CAD have the Fenrir installed already and have a SCART cable on the way to use with my OSSC. Retro-Bit Saturn controllers and a Brook PS4>PS1 adapter so I can have solid wireless controller setups for each. This video totally made me go yea fuck it, I'm getting both a Saturn and PS1 setup as there's just an overwhelming amount of awesome titles on them.

      @@nickd1978 It makes pixelated games look sharper on a large display which helps since you're taking an image that was meant for a small CRT TV and blowing it up. It also gives an old school arcade impression.

    I’d really love an inline device similar to an OSSC/Framemeister, but can also perform higher end crt shaders such as CRT Royale. Games with pre-rendered visuals look pretty amazing with it, and I’d like to have that capability with native hardware.

    6:51 To be fair those trees look better on the right with the Hyperkin, they are not meant to look like a bunch of color squares, they are meant to blur and thus give the illusion of foliage with depth and shadow. Same goes for Alucard, take his hair for example, not meant to be a bunch of white squares. Perfect pixels don't work for me, it's even hard to distinguish characters from background with that level of sharpness.
