@@ModernVintageGamer No the endianness is something really local to the CPU, in networking and especially true in Ethernet standards the entire OSI model from Physical link, Data link and network layers (1-3) which are all handled by the hardware/Network Interface Card/Controller which is a standardised model built against IEEE Standards. the remaining 3 layers which are handled in kernel and userland again must follow the same IEEE standards, thus your Intel based PC (X86) with say an Intel Xtreme LAN chipset can talk over the ethernet to your router/switch with a MIPS/ARM say a Broadcom BCM43x based chipset, which can then talk to an old iMac with a PowerPC and a (probably) Realtek chipset. for example. - because even at the very top of the stack (Application) they would be using the same software-based protocols, regardless of how they were compiled etc. - So to relate that to this topic, it's the same game running on different hardware, the networking stack is fundamentally the same, the OS is responsible for handling the sub-application layers of the OSI model, and the hardware below layer 2. the game simply sends out the same calls to the kernel (Which is a modified NT Kernel in these cases) and the communications are handled accordingly.

I remember back in the day, carting an original Xbox and small CRT TV to a friends house to play a racing game together. The fun we had. I even remember connecting the original Playstation 1 up with a system link cable and playing Command & Conquer. Those where the days!

It really gets on my nerves when devs omit lan play but have standard online play. There is nothing better than a massive LAN party with tons of junk food and good games everywhere.
Me and a bunch of friends have a halo 3/black ops 2 LAN party every few months. I never grew up doing this and started a couple of years ago. I missed out! Last time we had 4 Xbox’s playing together, with 14 people and it was awesome!
I grew up in a small town & me and my friends would play system link on the 360 when ever we had the chance. We didn't have access to the internet to play on Xbox Live, so we used the system link feature. We would play games such as Halo 3, Halo Reach, CoD Black ops Zombies, & many more. One of my favorite memories is when one of my friends had a birthday. There would be 10+ of us playing Halo Reach on different teams trying to best one another. It got so big in my hometown that we would host tournaments at our highschool & many people would come with their teams. Who knew a simple feature would bring a town together to play video games?
MVG, your content seriously made me want more 6th gen consoles. like i grew up with the GCN and PS2, but i'm so sad i missed out on the Dreamcast and OG Xbox... I had an Xbox 360 of course, but I see the OG Xbox as being pretty cool. You've also inspired me to host LAN Parties with my friends! (if only they brought their consoles...)
We've recently tried the link between consoles, I've purchased many used systems over the years alongside many same copies of the games for my boys to enjoy. I'm always trying to get them to enjoy basic gaming and the fun factor is in sharing the experience with friends and family.
I had a chipped OG xbox with a massive (for it's time) hard drive filled with backups of my entire library and tons of emulators and homebrew, and had it networked to my desktop so I could stream all of my media via crossover cable to my enormous CRT using S-Video. It was a lot like having a modified Firestick a decade and some change before those were even a thing. Once Xbox's were being blown out for > $50, I picked up two more and soft modded them, putting one in each of the three rooms on the upper floor of my house. When I would have the gang over for beers and games, I'd just swap the cable of my main Xbox from the PC to the other Xboxs and we'd be good to go for three room, three TV Halo 2 killfests. Those were some awesome times. Good to hear it's possible to system link all three generations together, I had no idea they kept that functionality going still. Thanks for the video and the memories it brought to the surface!
I’ve been waiting for this type of video to be released by you ! I remember watching some friends back in 2001 playing halo 2 on XBC. I had 3 of the og xboxs for this reason. Seems like the menue for setting this up was hidden. I still have 3 of my 360 set up for this reason for the newer for a games
@John Smith yep, forza on the 360 can run multiple copies on multiple consoles. you can do more than three btw. it uses the network for the communication, you can use wlan, but it will lag, i highly recommend ethernet, i had a router set aside and set up just for this reason, that didnt have or need the internet. unlike the xbox one, where certain "lan" functions that should only require the lan still require live connection like network transfers and lan mode in local games.
This was so cool back in the day to play Halo back in the day with system link and I love the fact that it can still be a thing in 2019 throughout the family of Xbox consoles. With online being so aggressively pushed, I would have never thought this stayed almost 20 years later. It's a fun time to be a gamer, between system link on Xbox and local wireless play on Switch. Couch co-op/multiplayer can make a comeback.
Original xbox and playing halo was amazing! Great times.
It got to the point that I kept my 32" CRT TV in the trunk (boot for Brits) of my car for our frequent Halo LAN parties. So much fun!
@@nathanddrews yeah i wish my family kept our CRT tv too because i have some gun controllers that do not work on these modern tv's. It sucks. ( brit too btw )
@@yeahhbuddy3932 Check out the Sinden Lightgun on Kickstarter. I ordered two. If it works as advertised, we'll be able to emulate lightguns on ANY display! No more crap wiimotes/sensor bars!
@@nathanddrews it looks awesome! I will wait for reviews then most likely buy 1 then.
Thanks to your video plus others I was able to successfully System Link tonight with my friends a 360 to a One and it was incredible. This was my first time doing System Link and we played Halo 3 for hours on end and it was a blast. Thank you for making this experience possible
You should be able to mix-and-match different SKUs of the same game, as long as the executable in those games is identical, or more specifically has an identical LANKEY in the xbe header.
I use to play NBA 2k1 online on my Dreamcast in 7th grade that was 19 years ago ahh the memories
I remember my first lan party, a couple years ago. (I was a kid when they were a big thing) me and my buddies were planning it all week for a Friday. We had it all planned out. But I forgot one major thing. I forgot to tell my wife... so needless to say, when she got home from work she wasnt too happy to find 4 TVs, 4 xbox's, and 4 drunk guys playing halo in our living room.
OH MY YES Crimson Skies on the PC was my jam growing up, I had completely forgotten about it, thanks for reminding me this gem existed!
i still use system link to this day with the buddies, guaranteed connection with quality ping
Great video mate. I regularly have friends round for 360 parties. Maxxed out at 8 people. This video has given me lots of new ideas.... Thanks mate.
It’s like when someone plays a board game with their dad and grandpa.
Goosebumps on Halo CE Menu Music!!
You know what’s cool, playing doom online using a 2019 built pc with a 1995 dos pc
try doing that, tell me your experience.
This was a great shot of nostalgia, another great job on this one about explaining the history of system link MVG
I think you convinced me to buy an xbox one s.
i got the purple one lol
I remember back in the day, carting an original Xbox and small CRT TV to a friends house to play a racing game together. The fun we had. I even remember connecting the original Playstation 1 up with a system link cable and playing Command & Conquer. Those where the days!
This is so awesome! If Nintendo will add a DS Virtual Console on the Switch i'd like to see it be compatible with actual original DS and 3DS consoles, and even to have download play
not a fucking chance, they won't even bring n64
They won't even bring Game Boy Color games like Pokémon Crystal
nintendo is incapable of such tech. heck their online is a crapfest... the feature of xbox of 2003!!!!!!!
they are good at pulling games and videos off websites and youtube though.
I absolutely know this would never happen, but why can't a random person on the internet have dreams?
We were still LANing Halo 2 well after 3 came out. We tried the 360 as a test & were surprised they worked! I had Cat 5 cables running all over the house, even down the stairs 🤣! This is one of the things that directed me into the IT industry! I didn't use Xlink until last year. Fun times there too.
What's the music that was playing during your showcase of DoomX called?
You'll find it on MVG's soundcloud I think
@@ananastudio Did you mean Bandcamp? If so, it's not there, I checked already. And I can't seem to find MVG's SoundCloud account, if there is one.
MVG is the reason I bought a modded original xbox at a thrift store and had it modded, the guy is a badass
Where did you get the Speedball T?
Great video as always.
Dude... some of my fondest memories ever was at LAN parties either at my house, or my friends homes. Man.. those were the days
The dreamcast was never gone just re-incarnated as xbox :v
*your dreamcast evolved into Xbox!
1:09 22 years later, still get goosebumps hearing that music.
creative video content as always good job!
I have sooo many great memories of having friends together and hooking up everyones xbox to play halo across the house, especally for birthday parties. Halo and a few racing games were a blast. It blows my mind three generations of xbox's work with it
It really gets on my nerves when devs omit lan play but have standard online play.
This is one of the reasons why I love Xbox 🙌🏾👍🏾
Same here!
As a gamer it's always great to see such amazing coverage of this systems. Thanks pal.
Every time I hear your intro I think of the beginning of Separate Ways by Journey... damn I'm getting old :(
Great video! I love how you feature xbox on your channel especially the OG xbox and 360. Great seeing this thanks. And Crimson Skies is a great game!!
MVG you the real MVP
Love the synthwave your playing in the video.
Can we go for four? Four player Doom on four generations?
Yes
Getting goosebumps after so many years just from sounds
I don't think that system link is going anywhere. Microsoft is treating backwards compatibility kind of like art preservation these days.
As it should be!
@@winlover37 yep
Another fantastic video where i genuinely learned something, that said the last 5 seconds was the best 5 seconds :*)
Can you try this with the Xbox series x?
I grew up in a small town & me and my friends would play system link on the 360 when ever we had the chance. We didn't have access to the internet to play on Xbox Live, so we used the system link feature. We would play games such as Halo 3, Halo Reach, CoD Black ops Zombies, & many more. One of my favorite memories is when one of my friends had a birthday. There would be 10+ of us playing Halo Reach on different teams trying to best one another. It got so big in my hometown that we would host tournaments at our highschool & many people would come with their teams. Who knew a simple feature would bring a town together to play video games?
Cool, do it again with an XBOX series X
Always learn something on this channel. Was more a PS2, PC guy till 360.
I like the speed ball shirt 💪
MVG, your content seriously made me want more 6th gen consoles.
like i grew up with the GCN and PS2, but i'm so sad i missed out on the Dreamcast and OG Xbox...
I had an Xbox 360 of course, but I see the OG Xbox as being pretty cool.
You've also inspired me to host LAN Parties with my friends!
(if only they brought their consoles...)
Awesome!
We've recently tried the link between consoles, I've purchased many used systems over the years alongside many same copies of the games for my boys to enjoy. I'm always trying to get them to enjoy basic gaming and the fun factor is in sharing the experience with friends and family.
Can you renew video with Series ?
When I googled Xbox system link this video was recommended on top of search results. Clearly you are the master!
Really good video but it bugs me how you pronounce router xD
Also shouldn't a switch be enough?
A switch cable does the job fine, never used a router as a kid
i'm a;ways astound at the quality of your work, keep it up man. Can not wait for the next video!
welp. i've had a shitty moping day. then this dropped. thanks ✌️
🙄
I love the thought of LAN play in general, and this makes me very happy.
man, why doesn't playstation care enough about their players to be like microsoft?
Because they’re cocky. And modern Xbox is shit nowadays.
I remember so many times we set up 4 player on 2 Xbox’s and played halo 2 4v4 slayer. Could not get enough!
I wonder if somebody tried to make an exploit using system link on Xbox one with a modded old Xbox.
Wow
I see Crimson skies I click
I’ve been waiting for this type of video to be released by you ! I remember watching some friends back in 2001 playing halo 2 on XBC. And not understanding what was going on, then years later getting the original Xbox soft modded and playing halo 2 on xlink kai. As well as lots of homebrew! voice Chat in games was so new and exciting as well as having broadband internet !
