Quite frankly...Souness should've left after the 1991-92 season...it was clear even then that he wasn't the right man for the job...and the damage he had done to the team was irreversible...
Also he did an interview with the sun about his triple bypass operation. Which when i look at it then as it is now, in my eyes was unforgiveable.

Liverpool fell off their perch when Wimbledon beat them in the 88 Cup Final, then the Hillsborough disaster happened & the last minute total loss to Arsenal in 89. Those 3 things combined knocked Liverpool off their perch. Kenny needed a long overdue break, he had been to over 50 funerals in 89, probably the Liverpool players themselves needed a break too. It was too much to expect the club to carry on as invincible as they had once been.

It’s a disgrace. His excuse was that other players and officials did interviews with the s*n. Also he was in Scotland at the time of Hillsborough.

@@rogerrambo4172I don’t think the Wimbledon defeat knocked us of our perch at all as we won the Cup in 89 and the league again in 90. It was purely the fact the core squad was ageing by the time 91 came around, Hansen had to retire around about that time , Barnes had his problems with injuries in 1991 and 92, many others did too and Kenny resigned after the 4-4 game at Everton. We were actually top of the league again by the time Kenny jacked it in and it changed the club. It’s just convenient to blame Souness even if he did make mistakes

@@drewgriffithsfmI agree, it wasn't the 88 Cup Final loss alone but that played a part along with Hillsborough, the 89 title loss, Kenny resigning & the dubious decisions by Souness, all making the perfect storm that would engulf & damage liverpool. It's not often reported but Kenny had a massive blow out with Rick Parry in December 1990, he had agreed a deal with Southampton to sign both Matt Le Tissier & Alan Shearer for £million + David Burrows. Rick Parry scuppered the deal practically a second before the contracts were signed because he didn't think they were Liverpool players & Kenny & the players were disgusted with their agents saying they would never deal with Liverpool again & Kenny being in acute embarrassment at what happened & fretting that if the media found out he would be a laughing stock. He signed David Speedie & Jimmy Carter instead but knew they weren't the quality of players Le Tissier & Shearer were & knew he would be ridiculed for signing them - wich he was. That was the point Kenny knew he had to walk away because he lost faith in Rick Parry but signing Le Tissier & Shearer would have been the catalyst for more glory years at Anfield

Souness destroyed Liverpool.. can't help wondering why he would let Beardsley and Houghton leave. I watched them for Newcastle and villa for years with Barnes and Rush they would have been the experience these youngsters needed

I think that 3-3 with United is STILL my all-time favourite draw ...
Generally draws feel like either missed opportunities or lucky breaks ... but that genuinely felt like a win, and I celebrated as such.

The 90s was a depressing era for Liverpool. 1991 until the success under Houllier was just bleak. Having Ruddock, Clough and Dicks and the old guard fading was hard to watch. Robbie and McManaman emerging helped but besides the 1995 league cup we won nothing until the next decade.

The season was good, as they played very good football, and l did like this team with Nigel Clough, Neil Ruddock and Julian Dicks but seeing Man United win Double was hard.Did like this Adidas kit though and away kit though green sleeves spoiled it.

@@PeterAnderson-z4yDicks was awful for me. This is far and away our worst decade in my lifetime. Souness wasn't a good manager. Rush, Molby, Nicol, Whelan were coming to the end. Any season with no trophy is disappointing and we had far too many of them in the 90s. It's a shame that McManaman was part of this era. I did like Adidas kits though👍

@@nonnayoubuzinnes1669 From 1994/95 and League Cup win, only good thing was Liverpool played well next 2 seasons reaching FA Cup final and coming close in League next season and reaching Cup Winners Cup final, and emergence of Michael Owen in late 1997. But going trophyless until 2000/2001 was hard to take seeing Man United and Arsenal collect the trophies.

Julian Dicks: I remember my grandad & uncles (who had been to every game home & abroad for 25 years) being genuinely pleased when we signed him coz the defence needed steel & they always said he was better than his reputation but the pro Man Utd media wanted to destroy Souey & LFC at every chance they got & Dicks was a victim in that

I forgotten how well we started..........Our downfall was sticking with the bootroom philosophy after Souness. We needed to reboot and bring someone fresh in. What I would have given for Bobby Robson at that time. Our transfer policy of buying hard nuts in defence was foolish too........Ruddock, Dicks and no improvement the following summer with Babb and Scales. We should have used that money instead on Southgate, Campbell and bringing back Staunton. Midfield duo of Barnes and Redknapp never worked as neither had the physicality.

Barnes recently mentioned how the training didn't suit the young players coming into the team before you would take months for a new player to come into the team that Liverpool had to many average new players coming into the team along with young players. This was a big reason why Souness made a big mistake selling experience players when he first came in.
Also Barnes mentioned that the young players were earning a lot of money to not listen to the senior player which changed the dynamic of the club.
Having said all that, in the following seasons Roy Evans teams were great to watch on their day.

@user-md2bt8tt1n I just hated that Souness era full stop to be honest. Clough didn't fit us either. Heysel and Hillsborough had took their toll, poor Kenny left unexpectedly and Souness tried to change things too quickly. Then as you said earlier MU started to take over, Blackburn with Jack Walker's money emerged. It just seems like a really bleak, unsuccessful time. Especially with how we are doing now. Things looked up under Houllier and the trophies returned but besides a few good young talents emerging I just can't see so many trophyless seasons as anything other then disappointing, by our standards anyway.
