Grudging admiration from a United fan!! 87/88 season we were 9 points behind Liverpool but in football terms we were light years away from the stuff they played that season.
I'm always impressed that you watch my videos. There's no way I'd put myself through an equivalent Utd video from the Ferguson years! (Or maybe you just comment and don't watch...)
Dave Waller I watch them Dave!! Sitting in a dark room rocking back and forth!! Only joking!! I would rather watch Liverpool videos about this era than United today. I watch all clubs videos from the 70’s and 80’s because that’s my football. Plus Liverpool played some wonderful stuff back then. Even though we normally got the better of you in the games we played you always took the prizes at the end of the season!!
Dave Waller plus I was at all our games so I don’t really watch them on video. Apart from Barcelona 99!! Even though I was there I could watch that over and over and over...............
@@DaveWallerLFC Liverpool were the team United fans most admired at that time. We just couldn't admit it in public. As I've said before, United achieved excellence (and some abysmal mediocrity); Liverpool achieved greatness.
After the games on the 5th of March 1988, Liverpool were 17 points ahead of Man Utd with 2 games in hand. For the rest of the season, Man Utd had 8 wins and 2 draws, whereas Liverpool had 4 wins, 6 draws and 2 defeats.
I watched this on VHS endlessly when I was a kid. Absolutely adored it. The choral version of YNWA for the funeral mass after Hillsborough (around the 1 hour 11 minute mark in this video) is still the most beautiful version I've ever heard of it. Incredibly moving.
OMG!! I grew up with this vhs....thankyou so much..love Gerald stinstad narration. All Liverpool fans need to watch this. Also had another classic vhs..again lost it! ...1987-88 season I think....highlights and then the full notts forest match....5-0 ..Tom Finney described it as the best exhibition of football he'd seen....hope it's on here somewhere...nice 1
Dave u r a true red mate, been searching this for years and years and just couldn’t find it. Even last year I could not find it but then it popped up on my search. Thank u my red brother
I am 54 and I have been a Liverpool fan since 1974 50 years of great players and managers and tragedy with Hillsborough I love Kenny but mo comes close to Kenny and Kevin keegan
I'm a United fan but grew up in a predominately Liverpool household. This was there on tape and I used to throw it on the odd time. Good production, story and an impressive team.
I was talking about this video with a friend tonight and searched it on RUclips just to see if it was here and oh my god I'm almost crying, I wore out the VHS as a kid, I must of watched this hundreds of times, it reminds me of some of the happiest times I ever had with my dad, whoever uploaded this, thank you so much, you have no idea much it means to me seeing this again.
When I was a teenager this was a Friday night staple for me. I used to wish the clock could be reversed from the 90s (remember them 🙁) to the 80s when Liverpool were ascendant. Thanks to Jurgen Klopp we might be doing exactly that. And thanks to you, Dave, I was wondering when this video might appear, you've made my day. YNWA!
Have this on VHS. Would like a dvd version. The good old days.i used to watch this then the season reviews from. 88/89 which was the first review ever done during the summer mths up to the latest release.this is edited tho as footage is missing
Had this on VHS as well. The second goal against Wolves in 1980. It was such a typical Liverpool goal with the third player running off the ball. Absolutely brilliant.
Year later another title. I do wonder did Liverpool fans knew back then in 1990. and especially after Dalglish left that it's an end of an era. In comparison I think everyone in the world knew its over in Manchester after Ferguson retired.
I used to have this VHS, I think it's still in my parents house. I used to watch this video religiously when I was a kid. What a fantastic team it was.
Watching my school days and the teams I grew up watching and loving, boy did I take it for granted and wouldn't have dreamed in a million years we wouldn't win the Premier League til 2019 . So to any Man Utd fans take note 😄🤣😂YNWA
Does anyone know the piece of trumpet music that begins at 35:00? It has been in my head since I was a child because my dad had this on VHS along with Kenny Dalglish: Portrait of a Natural Footballer.
Paisley always rated the 1979 team as the best he coached. I always rated the 1988 team as the best Liverpool side I saw. They'd have beaten PSV just like Everton would have beaten Bucharest. The fact neither team did was the price that had to be paid. Whilst Heysel was Liverpool and their fan bases fault, UEFA was also culpable to a degree. The game has recovered, but Liverpool, Man United and all the other teams who have had success are puppets for US hedgefunds and oil money. I watch videos like this to remind me of what football should be.
Wimbledon finished 7th in the league that year and both league games between the teams were close. From memory I think the odds might have been 3/1 for Wimbledon.
This is fantastic Dave. I had this on VHS & was only searching for it on youtube last week. You're a leg mate 👏 👍. Can I ask you is there any chance you would have the most recent official history of LFC, think it was produced by the club in 2007 & narrated by Jim Beglin
Do you have 'Liverpool in Europe' at all Dave? It was a BBC commemorative video released just after the ban and finished with us against Kuuysi Lahti I think? Thanks again for these uploads mate!
I do have that, but given that UEFA block any footage of their finals (and some semi finals) from the 70s and 80s I'm not sure if it's worth trying to upload it as there might not be much left.
Are you talking about subtitles? Do other videos on my channel have this? I'm not sure how it works. I don't have the time (or language skills) to add them manual in English (or other languages) I'm afraid.
@@DaveWallerLFC well and also thank you for your very beautiful clips to learn about the great history of liverpool and its historical matches that are full of football beauty.❤❤
The strange thing I’ve always thought about is that with all the stuff Liverpool won in the 70’s and 80’s they didn’t really do anything in the FA cup. Any idea why?? They were certainly good enough.
Cup football has fine margins. The best team over the season can easily have off days. 3 finals in each decade and some semi finals isn't *that* bad but it is odd that Paisley never won while sweeping the board in every other competition.
Would it be fair to say that football became more uneven after the Premier League started so the best team was further ahead of the rest and therefore less likely to slip up in the cups? I'm sure that's true now (when clubs take cups seriously) but maybe not in 1994/1996 when you started winning doubles?
A strange one. Clough and Paisley never won it, which still baffles me. We tripped Liverpool up three times during this period, so I'm claiming some credit for United :)
According to shazam it's called "Lily was here", written by Dave Stewart and performed by Candy Dulfer. There's a live version of the song here: ruclips.net/video/3SfSQ3lQmJw/видео.html
I watched this video to death as a kid. Some of these commentaries are lodged in my brain forever.
Me also until Mum threw it out as she didn't think it was valuable to me.
Haha! Ditto Max 😂👍🏻
