Watched many videos on painting kitchen cabinets and ended up more confused than when I started. After watching yours I felt confident enough to follow your recommendation. I chose NSL-X primer and BENJAMIN MOORE ADVANCE SATIN finish. I'm using brush and roller and waiting 24 hrs in between coats. Thank you soooo much for this video my cabinets are turning out beautiful thanks to you. Very greatful!!!
I just used Advance on my cabinets, fabulous! Thanks
Great review! I'm convinced. Thanks!
Great video! Thank you!
Hey Ryan, great videos, thank you! Have you ever tried the General Finishes products? I'm wondering if you have any input on how the BM Advance would compare to the GF Enduro White Poly, which can be tinted to match commercially available paint colors?
Thanks for such great info! What kind of finish do you get? And can you recommend a white color?
Thank to share site us!😊
great video ur great, when you roll or brush. do you still have to put 20% of water,,thank you
Respect man I've been spraying Benjamin Moore Advance since it came out on the market it is by far the best finish. I use my Accu spray HVLP
is it hard to spray advance? Also, what primer would you use for cabinets?
@royjohnson9043 Advanced sprays like oil but you need to water it down a little bit if you're using an HVLP sprayer. Use Stix primer. By far the best 👌🏻
@@tommyboit9494 thanks so much bro I’ll try that
Thanks for your review. I am just in the middle of painting my cabinets and after watch your video I have a question:
I used Behr water based Acrylic-Alkyd enamel undercoated as primer. After watching your video my question is what do you recommend for the top coat between the Emerald from SW or BM . Thanks in advance for your answer
thank you for great review. what would be your second choice for primer? cannot find smart prime in my area (Canada)
So, I'm going to follow your advice. My daughter has laminate kitchen cabinets. We'll get the Smart Prime or Stix Prime along with the B.M. Advance. We would like to do semi-gloss but you don't recommend it. So, still between satin and semi. Do you have a video of the prepping and sanding?
On line says 4 hour dry time. That is a long time between coats. I generally use the Behr Dynasty for cabinets. Can do a second coat in 15 minutes.
3/16 roller, 4” does great
hey! Thanks for the great videos! would this process also work on the formica label countertop? do you recommend a top coat to make it more durable?
I think the stix primer will work for that or SW extreme bond primer
Do you reco this paint for laminate cabinets or just wood?
Hi Ryan-great video! I used BM Advance for my kitchen cabinets in White Dove, they turned out beautiful. I did have a bit of a learning curve with the viscosity and leveling but all turned out great. I do have some cabinets that have chipped around the pulls-should I sand a bit around the chipped areas before touching up? Thanks!
Hi looking to do the same! Have yours yellowed at all?
Would you recommend this paint and primer to paint IKEA cabinets?
What do you use to thin ot for spraying? Just water?
Hi. I would like to paint my 35-year old small light oak drop leaf kitchen table using this paint. I will prime it first. But I would like to also after I paint it do a glaze on the top. Is that possible, No. 1? And which would you suggest? Also, I would like to seal it after that since it is used 24/7. Which would you recommend to seal it? Thank you so much.
Thank you for a great video! I tried to look for the rollers you recommended, mohawk(?) rollers and can't seem to find what they are, please help! Definitely planning on using your product recommendations.
HAI I didn't even catch that. It's Mohair, not Mohawk. I always call them Mohawk unintentionally for some reason.
I've watched a bunch of your videos and found them and your website VERY informative and helpful. I'm gearing up to paint my kitchen cabinets again. Five years ago, I painted the 30 yr old oak cabinets with Annie Sloan chalk paint (barn red), followed by Annie Sloan wax. And of course now I want white cabinets for a change. Do you think I can still get a good finish over those products? The wax kind of scares me. - Or can I talk you into visiting Daytona Beach and doing a little side job while you're here? :)
Hi Lisa, thanks for the compliment! We're trying to plan a family vacation to Florida right now too! Sadly, painting on vaca sounds awful ;)
What I would do if I were you is use a bucket of hot water, Dawn dish soap, and a scrub pad and really clean your cabinets as best you can before you begin. Try to get as much of that was off as possible.
Then do a couple tests with your primer before you prime everything. Does it bead up at all? If so, clean it more or switch to an oil based primer like Kilz Original.
Good luck!
@@diypainting Thanks I will give that a try. It sounds like once I see the primer is working properly, then the paint will too. Hope you enjoy your Florida visit :)
Can it be thinned for spraying
What stage is your HVLP? Im considering Advance, my Fuji sprayer is a stage 3
would a paint like this require a clear top coat for added protection?
Now that I know which paint to buy, can anybody recommend a video on painting cabinets withou a sprayer?
That's a great idea. I am just finishing a new cabinet painting video, but maybe the next one should be without a sprayer.
Hi I’m thinking about doing my kitchen cabinets in advance matte.I did a few test spots it seems durable for a matte finish.I find the advance satin a little too shiny.Would you recommend the advance matte for kitchen cabinets.I was going to use extreme bond as a primer,or should I use the advance primer?Ive used the emerald urethane which is great but the finish was a bit chalky, but I hear that was improved by Sherwin Williams.I found the advance dries much faster then the four to six hours they state on the tds.
Thanks for the great videos!
Advance Matte would be great for kitchens. Extreme Bond Primer from SW is a great primer.
@@diypainting Thanks a lot for the response and the videos
Hi, I sure hope you get this in time. But my husband had a nice smooth coat of primer but when he sprayed the cabinets with Benjamin Moore Advanced this morning he got quite a bit of running. Is that from going too slow? He’s using a 315 tip? Any advice would be so appreciated.
Wish I had noticed this sooner. Sorry. a 315 is a huge tip. I use 315's for ceilings and walls. Spraying cabinets with a 315 tip would be incredibly hard to do without getting runs. I would drop down to a 311 or a 409. Ideally an HVLP would be even better.
does this paint do well with humidity? Would you suggest it for a bathroom vanity? THanks!
I have used it on many bathroom vanities and haven't had any issues. It does great in bathrooms.
smart prime is better than B-I-N Shellac-Based White Interior Primer and Sealer for ktichen cabinets " without sanding "
I can’t find this paint near the Philly market. The stores have been out of stock for months. Have you heard this ? Any idea when the shelves will be restocked?
Sadly, this has become a problem in a lot of areas due to supply chain issues. Sorry. If you can find INSL-X Cabinet Coat, Sherwin Williams Emerald, or Behr Urethane Alkyd Enamel, they are all great products as well.
I have a question for you. Have you used any of the high end cabinet finishes. Like Renner or Milesi or Centurion
Yes, on many occasions. I actually run a prefinish/refinish shop where most cabinets & furniture are completed. I do not use them on this channel or on the website as I don't believe they are DIY options.
I used Advance on my own cabinets. What do you tell your customers after you paint their cabinets? Light use for 30 days?
I tell them not to touch for 24 hours, then extremely light for 7 days. After that, be mindful for 30 days. After that, the durability is fantastic.
@@diypainting do you reinstall the door fronts right away?
Hi, Ryan
I just brought a "Benjamin Moore Advance simply white" would I use that with "Zinsser Rust-Oleum Smart Primer"? A little worried about this, because "Zinsser Rust-Oleum Smart Primer" is oil based, and Benjamin Moore Advance is a water based paint? And water don't go on top of oil from what I read online. Thank you, please let me know
Actually there are a couple of things here. First, Smart Prime is a hybrid primer with a water based formula. My preferred method when doing clients cabinets is to prime with Smart Prime and top coat with Advance. They work perfectly together. Second, you can absolutely put a water based finish on top of an oil based primer. I have used Kilz Original oil based primer for my primer then top coated with Advance, Pro Classic, and others with great success. Good luck!
Would you wait a week to fully cure to re-hang the cabinets and hardware?
No one day tops
Definitely want to go with advanced paint after watching many videos of how fantastic it is, yet every color I have had my Benjamin Moore mix for me in the satin seems to be more yellow, I have tried grays, white, with gray undertones green undertones etc. I spent a lot of $30 quarts trying to figure out, They even told me it was lighting when I showed them that it was still yellow in their store and outside lol do you have any of these issues? Are they mixing it wrong?
Try ultra white cc-10
Yep, Ultra White or Super White don't have any yellow tones
I have a quick question on the Advance product. I am getting small bubbles when I spray this reduced 20%. These bubbles are then popping and leaving little craters on the dried product. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!
Sounds like a sprayer issue
is it hard to spray advance? Also, what primer would you use for cabinets?
Advance is super easy to spray. If you're using an airless sprayer, no need to thin. If you're using an HVLP, thin it by roughly 20% and you'll be good.
Smart prime is a great primer for Advance. I've used it many times and it is one of my favorite primers.
@@diypainting nice. what do you think about stix as a primer?
Heard advance yellows over time. Is that still the case? Looking to do white dove
I haven't had an issue with that personally. But, if you're concerned about it, Sherwin WIlliams Emerald is a great cabinet paint and easy to work with as well.
Does the Advance paint yellow with white colors like simply white and white dove? I’ve read some reviews where people have had some issues with that.
What do you mean paint yellow? Does it do it on cabinets, walls, or both?
Heard the same but love white dove! Did you end up doing it?
do you have to use benjamin moore primer with benjamin moore paint?
Nope, you can use whatever primer you prefer. People just tend to use the same brand primer as their top coat because it's convenient.
What do you use to thin Advance by 20% for spraying? Water? Or some other Product intended to help thin?
Just painted my cabinets using advanced. Water does the job thinning it.
I made the mistake of not priming it and it did not stick to the plywood cabinet I'd built. Now it's gonna be a PITA to strip it down and repaint. Use primer!
Why is it so hard to find Smart Prime???????
if my cabinets are already painted, but worn, do i need to strip down to the wood to repaint them?
Oh gosh NO
Can i use advance directly to oil based paint
Yes you can
Doing oak bathroom cabinets using Benjamin Moore Advance semi gloss. The paint store says that i don't need to primer. I am going to fill the grain with your instructions. What do you think?
You can get away with skipping primer sometimes, but priming never hurts, only helps. It can give a better adhesion and result in fewer chips and issues in the future. Priming is never a bad idea.
@@diypainting thanks. What primer would you recommend for Benjamin Moore advance white semi gloss?
@@michaelcohen2760that’s why I’m watching video. Does he say which to use?
@@michaelcohen2760 what primer did you end up using with advance?
@royjohnson9043 I ended up with Zinnser "Bullseye" interior primer and sealer because it was on closeout at Walmart for $15 a gallon
The pencil hardness of the Cabinet Coat is better than the Advance.
I purchase benjamin more advance i have a titan 540 what setting do you put it on for primed cabinet doors and framing?
I would use a 311 or 411 tip. Then start with your pressure turned all the way down and shoot a test spot on some cardboard. If your spray fan looks blotchy, turn your pressure up just a little bit. Repeat this until your spray fan looks good at as low of pressure as possible. This should get you a nice controlled spray fan without too much pressure. Good Luck!
What bout Melisi or Renner
Both are fantastic products, but I consider them both "pro" products for different reasons. Plus the ones that i mention are easily accessible across the US to the average homeowner.
It does have a nice finish but i don't find it very durable. It is very easy to scratch. I can scratch it with my finger nail
I care about results. Not how fast it dries, how much VOC's, don't care about easy cleanup or time to complete. Only results. You are concerned about time so you want to be in and out quickly. I get that. You need to make money and time is money. So if YOU only cared about results, what product would you use? Probably not this one?
Good points. I do care about all the things like you said. VOCs because I have to deal with it every day. Dry time because I need to make money. But the number one thing I care about is results. Getting the best results is always number 1 and with that in mind I would still go with Advance. It is a fantastic product and great for the DIY painter.
Benjamin Moore has the best primer . Fresh start. And I'm old school I like to use Benjamin Moore semi-gloss oil base for my cabinets 💪💪 but yes it's getting very hard to find 💲💲💲 . On my next set of cabinets I'll try this crap that this guy is talking about?????. I've been painting for 37 years. And iam just o oil guy when it comes to CABNITS.
I'm sorry. But I used this youtube and as a guide when I chose cabinet paint. I am 4 days in on repainting my cabinets and cannot tell you how disappointed I am in this paint. A water drop stains it--and that's with 2 coats!!!!
Why is water being dropped on a freshly painted cabinet that only 4 days in? It takes 7 days to use and 30 days to fully cure.
Oh hey there, Bradley Cooper.
I quit watching after about 2 minutes of rambling about VOCs and the environment.
But still took time to comment and tell everyone how you quit watching :)
