    I tried Gallery for the first time a couple weeks ago on a cabinet job. I really liked how fast and hard it dried. I was worried about runs on the cabinet body as I heard it was on the thin side, but really had no issues, one small run on the first coat. What I did notice like you said in the video is that two coats often didn't hide the red bondo. If you put it on too thick the finish will crackle, so I think in the future I will plan on priming, bondo, 2nd prime coat and then 2 finish coats.

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes definitely best to prime before and after bondo 👌🏻otherwise 3 topcoats required with extra white. If it’s an off white or creamy color coverage is much better

    Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. Love Command (but would not use it for cabinets). Gallery pinholed for me when sprayed both with TriTech T5 and QuickShot. Didn't matter what tip, room temp, etc. Just nasty solvent trapping. Moved on to Envirolak and never looked back.

      Thanks for watching. I wouldn’t use command either however wanted to compare fastest drying product from main suppliers in our area. That sucks Gallery did not perform for you. I’ve only had success with it. Sounds like you were having humidity issues which I’ve had with other products. There is nothing worse! Envirolac is a wonderful product

  • @andrewelmer9266
    @andrewelmer9266 9 месяцев назад +7

    Gallery series is better imo. To me, scratch resistance is huge on cabs. 5 dollars more, and then having to tint primer for coverage over bondo etc. That command scuffed with just a credit card!

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  9 месяцев назад +3

      Yes great point scratch and chemical resistance is very important! However I would be interested in scratching the command again after 1 month as it’s a water based urethane alkyd and anything “alkyd” with oil resins will take forever to harden. Either way when cabinet painting we don’t have a month for things to cure/harden making Gallery the better of the two 💪

    I got some gallery to test for some cabinets I have to paint, but on the test piece I did, it looks good, but it doesn't seem so dorable. I did the credit card test and it scratches pretty easy, and when I try to clean the surface with a magic eraser it dulls the paint and lightly removes some of it. The paint color was tricon black, and I used shellac white BIN primer on it. I did 2 coats primer (sand in between) and 2 coats paint. What do you suggest I should do differently to have better results? I have using my quickshot with a 310 tip (not water down paint or anything, just using it as is).

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  9 месяцев назад +1

      We waited 72 hours before testing and probably should wait 21 days on dark colors before fully cured. If you over apply the product especially with dark colors it can take up to 30 days. My test was done 72 hours after application and I applied 2 light even coats over raw MDF which probably helped absorb the product and cure over time. If your applying over lacquered oak or Maple that will slow down full cure as well

    Thank you for this in-depth comparison. I've been using Command for some time now however it appears I have to delve into Gallery. I've had issues spraying the command with my Graco Quickshot where very small bubbles (not craters) will form. With slight thinning, and spraying through a .208 at setting 7, this seemed to do the trick, but I'm always a bit concerned. Can you shed light on your spraying tip and pressure used? Thank you.

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  Месяц назад +2

      I use gallery through the QS often I put pressure at 7,8 and use a Graco 310 fflp tip with flawless results also spray through my new Graco 490xt at 1800 psi with same tip for flawless results. It could be your tip. Also if you put it on too soon and primer or first coat are still drying can cause the craters as it’s off gassing through the new coat but if your waiting the full amount of dry time with proper temperature in room I’ve had issues with humidity causing the same issue. Not with gallery or command but with centurion 1k/2k.

      Great question Command is loaded with oil resins and oil takes longer to cure. If the color is white it with harden quicker maybe 7-14 days if the color is dark 21-30 days but all depends on temperature in the home . The more colorant loaded in can of paint and the colder the home the slower the cure time. 🤘😎🤘 thank you for watching!

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  Месяц назад

      You are correct! there aren’t any KCMA certified cabinet paints at all. I misspoke in a couple of my videos as many people do. After further investigation last year I found out that the certification is for cabinets. If you build cabinets with quality craftsmanship, construction and apply proper coatings the cabinets as a whole will receive this KCMA certification. Now that being said there are certainly coatings that are approved to meet this certification and Advance is one of them. But there aren’t any paints with KCMA certification only paints that “meet”KCMA test requirements for hardness and resistance to household chemicals. Once those coatings are applied to the cabinets the cabinets will receive the certification

      Thank you for the feedback! The quart cup will get you through 10-12 doors per coat. So for two coats you can roughly paint 20-24 doors with one gallon. Most kitchens take 1-2 gallons of primer and 2-3 gallons of paint to complete

    • @mallerpaintingcompany

      Both products will stick to caulk just fine. If you want to paint over it quickly you will need a fast dry like 1050QD otherwise it will leave a hairline crack if you don’t allow the caulking to fully dry. If you have time to let the caulking dry from Sherwin you could use 950A or Shermax from Ben Moore I like the Tower Tech or Allpro Elastomeric caulking. The slower drying products will tool much better but they are 1-2 hour dry time before painting

Sometimes minimal bubbling, sometimes dries like there's sand in the paint. Also have used titan 540 with 312 tip, not as many bubbles but still there. If you leave gallery in your sprayer over night and use it the next day, it sprays weird and have a different texture. Pitting. So now I clean my guns out the same day. The orange peel you are seeing is from the cheap MDF grain raise a scuff sand between coats would have eliminated that. But either way emerald does level better as it’s a slow dry which should be a no brainer.

      @@mallerpaintingcompany MDF "grain raise" doesn't "orange peel" , it "roughens like sandpaper when grain is raised , gets fuzzy" , there's a difference .....That orange peel is NOT from "MDF raised Grain" it's the paint not leveling well ....... no-brainer

    Advance says full cure is 5-7 days. So 72 hours isn't enough before doing scratch test

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  4 месяца назад

      We didn’t use advance in this test. We used Command. Command states on data sheet “return to service” in 24hrs. I agree if we would have waited a lot longer command would perform better however with cabinet painting being able to stack and install cabinets within 72 hrs without worrying about getting scratches is important!

      I love the centurion primer but had some really awful issues with there products pin bubbling. Which im told by the centurion rep is due to humidity. We did everything by the book in a pro spray booth. He also said it’s a known issue and happens often. I tried it twice had the same issues both times so unfortunately I will never use their topcoat again as I have many others that I never have issues with

    I have a paint stick with command on it , will not mar using my fingernail or a credit card , ZERO marring , BUT , this paint stick sample is a year old !!!! ..... The problem with these tests sometimes is some of these paints require a long time to fully cure and harden , I'm talking a month ...... "24 hours" ain't gonna cut it , so I can see the SW certainly did better immediately , but try it again in a month and see what happens ..... they say "two weeks" , but in my opinion these kinds of paints just keep hardening and it will even be more durable in a month or a year ...... I've had these paint stick samples for a long time , every time I check them they seem harder and "stuck better" , I have a sample of Breakthrough on a damn ceramic tile you cannot scratch off !!!!!! no joke

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  7 месяцев назад

      You are correct anything with oil resins will take longer to harden. But the data sheet says cured in 72 hours on command and I waited 72 hours to compare. However that’s without colorant we all know adding colorant extends the cure time so I would think the white should have not scratched after 3 days? But your right probably would have performed better in scratch test after 1 month but when painting cabinets waiting a month for full cure is a disadvantage in my opinion

      @@mallerpaintingcompany I understand , try putting samples on paint sticks , and just store them away , you will find they get even harder after "72 hours" , I know it sounds strange and maybe this is all just my imagination , but seems like every time I mess with those sticks , and I have a ton of samples , they seem to be harder and harder ...... The Breakthrough sample is like a damn rock !!!! lol but I put that one on kinda thick too .... I think Command is similar to Breakthrough (from what I understand)

      Thanks for watching however I disagree. Both brush and roll equally. Both dry in the same amount of time. They aren’t designed to be rolled but a skilled painter could make either product work if needed. However if I were rolling I wouldn’t choose either product as Advance or Emerald are more suited for this application.

    The test is flawed. It needs to have a true primer. It needs the correct dry time, and sanding between the coats. And 3 coats (with a better rig) that is for cabinets.

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  4 месяца назад

      Adding a primer wouldn’t have any affect on dry time, trying to scratch the surface after 72 hrs or the use of a chemical on the surface after 72hrs. If it was a test to see which coating a can make look better than it would have been performed much differently. With primer, sanding between coats and a better sprayer.

    • @BHPaintingRefinishing
      @BHPaintingRefinishing 4 месяца назад

      The primer adds significantly to the strength of the finish, when sanded and dried properly, then sanding between about 3 coats if you use an HVLP. You should use the manufactures spec sheet for each product because you are following the manufacturer's intentions. The test that some others are using is to score the surface and put tape on it and pull off the (duct tape) the prime will make a big difference. I think your test is helpful, but it leaves me with doubts. I saw another test on Gallery, and it was beaten by Renner 851. But it did not deter me from wanting to use Gallery in some cases. I'm impressed by using 409.

      @@mallerpaintingcompany I got comped a gallon of Command satin, I see what you mean, I can't use it with the lines, but there is a commercial line that must be the one that people are saying is super stong, but most of us are not able to get or want that. BTW, there is a Saylerlack crosslinker for Gallery, but it goes bad after a year--.05-1 percent. It might make it even better.

  • @rubbersatin

    This test is EXTREMELY flawed. Comparing solids between a paint and a spray only cabinet finish is hilarious. Sanding them both between coats at 45 minutes would show the Gallery producing a factory finish. Also flipping them after an hour or so would show huge advantage to the Gallery. I could go on and on. Price goes to Gallery when you see how much time that saves.

    • @mallerpaintingcompany
      @mallerpaintingcompany  8 месяцев назад +2

      To your first point I’m comparing both brands best quick dry product in a head to head as these are both paint companies best product for producing a set of cabinets in my opinion. Yes the Gallery is a water based acrylic lacquer and command is a waterbased urethane alkyd however BM doesn’t have any other options to compare. Second point - Sanding between coats would show them both have a factory finish.3rd we hang and spray both side at once but you are correct if you were to spray one side at a time Gallery would have the advantage if it covers in 2 coats the command covers much better and would argue it might go quicker only needing 2 coats per Gallery’s 3 coats as gallery does not cover as well 4. Price per “gallon” goes to BM command. There are flawes in every test this was just my test and what I was interested in seeing.
