That person who knocked on your father's parent's door and asked for water sounds like an angel. Who knocks on a door for water during the middle of a missile attack? He truly saved them. The angels were definitely watching over your mother too during her voyage on the boat. Such a beautiful family history and family, Cassey!

Cassey, this has got to be one of the most eartfelt videos you have ever posted. I've never cried listening to someone else's story before but the drive & courage your mother has is very inspiring! I am not close to my family & they've never really supported me or what I've tried to do.. I'm just kind of background noise to them but I wish I had a family that was as supportive as yours! Never take them for granted, Cassey! Love you

Cassey, I want to thank you and your family for sharing your story. I think it's important that the younger Vietnamese generation acknowledges the hardships that our parents have faced in order to find better lives for themselves, and for us as well. I'm also Vietnamese and my parents can definitely relate to the experiences that your parents have discussed. I've heard countless stories about people escaping from Vietnam by boat and no words can embody the respect that I have for your mom and dad, for having to endure such a painful experience. I'm glad that your parents have raised both you and your sister into such amazing individuals. I love you Cassey!!
Also, this is for your parents:
Chú và cô rất can đảm vì cả hai người đều kể truyện về kinh nghiệm của họ. Con muốn cám ơn chú và cô tại vì kể truyện về chiến tranh không có dễ một chút nào. Con hy vọng gia đình của chú và cô mạnh khoẻ, vui vẻ và thành công luôn luôn!

It's been a year since i came to America from Japan.
My parents are not immigrants, but your parents' story made me cry.
When I first came here, I felt like I was nothing and no one cared about me because I didn't really speak English. But throughout the year, I learned how amazing it is to know a different culture and be friends with people from different countries. I also realized that anyone can be friends no matter where you from or what language you speak:) My English got much better in a year and am so glad that I came here.
anyways, your great parents' story and their smile encouraged me so much. Thank you so much for posting this. Love you!

I'm adopted from South Korea, raised in America by a white American family. So, I don't really know the story of my birth family. BUT my family's stories are so funny and interesting! On my dad's side, my grandad's ancestors were all criminals, like one of them owned a saloon in California during the Gold Rush and you can look up his family in the criminal records. But then my grandma's family was all elite mayors and sheriffs! It's so hilarious, and they created 8 incredibly smart children! My grandad was also a mathematician for the government and had to tell his kids he was a lawnmower. My dad figured out what my grandad's job actually was when he was reading a book about like the secret service and what-not as a kid and realized "Hey, I know these names...These are people who come to my house every weekend and play chess with me and my siblings!"

Ohhhh Your story is so heart touching Cassey.I'm Egyptain,Irish, and German. My dad is from Egypt and my mom is from America, but her family blood is in Ireland and Germany. My Dad came to America looking for an opportunity and met my mom, but he didn't go to collage when he came to America , so he is working at a hard labor job, trying to have me and my sister become successful and happy with our lives. My family actually supports me becoming a Manga artist and my dad just wants me to be happy in life.He supported my transition into becoming healthy and would take me to the gym and let me cook all the healthy food you make.

That was a really sweet video Cassey!!! I was born in Chicago and so was my mother and her sister but my grandparents came over here from Romania. My grandmother lived in a small German town in Romania and my grandfather lived in one as well. During WWII my grandmother ended up going into a work camp by choice because she went in the stead of a friend whose mother was ill and didn't want to go. My grandfather went into the military taking care of the horses a bomb blew up near him at one point which left shrapnel in his skull which was never removed. My grandmother had to work in terrible conditions with barely getting enough food to survive let alone enough to actually be able to do the hard manual labor they had to do. My grandfather didn't even have shoes their branch of the military was so poor. When the war ended my grandparents only weighted around 80 or 90 lbs. When my grandmother could finally come home she found out her mother had died while she was gone so there was nothing really left for her in her town since her father disappeared when she was young. She met my grandfather and they only went on 3 dates prior to him asking her to marry him. Apparently he had put off coming to America twice in order to keep seeing her and couldn't put it off again so since he wanted to keep seeing my grandmother they had to get married so that she could come with him over here. She ended up cooking for her own wedding lol. They worked hard my grandfather was the handyman for a building and my grandmother would clean. They saved money and bought an apartment building. Eventually they bought another one which is the building I grew up in and is also where I live again with my fiancé. My grandmother is still alive and is 92 yrs old she has so many stories from then though weirdly enough she never speaks of them as horrible times just that they occurred. I've heard that from a lot of people from her generations none of them really speak ill of the past they seem to realize that the past is the past and there's nothing that will change it so they don't glorify it or demonize it just say it like it is.

This shows how strong Asian Americans can be...how much we have been willing to endure with sacrifice and back breaking hard work. It is easy for me to say b/c I am 2nd generation and benefiting from the generations before. I hope I can be as strong if such a time calls. And even though it is unlikely I will have to endure such horrible events, I hope I can leave a big piece of that to my kids to carry with them to be so resilient.

Oh gosh, thanks for sharing Cassey! It made me think about how so many people say that we, Asians, are so privileged and have things given to us. It's not true at all. I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My parents worked hard so I can finish my school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and now continuing my studies in Chicago. I too worked hard to to make them proud and all. We definitely didn't have anything given to us, we worked hard and seized the opportunity that came by.

This was a very cool video. It's also nice to see your parents now because we've always heard how they were not supportive of your choices but listening to their story I totally understand why they felt that way. After so many hardships (when it was mentioned that a lot of girls were raped on the boat your mother was in I almost started crying because I feared the worst... I'm glad she was able to disguise herself... although it must have been really hard to see and hear and know all the things that happened) I guess it was completely logical for them to follow such a career that would surely give you security. Also it's very inspirational to hear stories of people who overcame all the hardships.
My family's history is very simple, we don't have big twists. We are all portuguese and we've always lived here and I guess the most challenging thing that happened was when my grandparents had to move to France and then Germany (without my mom) to work, since things were not great here in Portugal. People from the time of my grandparents were mostly people who worked in agriculture so things were very though. My grandparents never studied much and in result they had hard lives, since they didn't have many qualifications. I guess that's what made school so important in my family. Still, it's good to look back and think about what they've been trough (my grandpa often tells us when he was young there would be one sardine for him and his two brothers...) and realise we can be strong and appreciate what we have. Thank you all for sharing your story :)

I'm like you Cassey. I take a lot of AP classes and my school is very competitive. I wouldn't know how to be rebellious if I wanted to. But hearing you talk about achieving your dreams has made me realize that I can pursue mine. My parents want me to have a good stable job and be financially independent which I totally understand, but all I want to do after college is travel and see the world as an aupair. It may not be the most glamorous job or one with a lot of money but it's something that I'm really looking forward to. You've helped me realize that being successful in life doesn't mean a fancy house and a six figure salary. Thanks Cassey! Love you

My parents & I are from the Congo. My father came to states to go to university & for a better life. I came later on right before the civil war started & my mom did not come with me. I was fortunate to leave & come here for a better life, but at the same time I haven't seen my mom in over 18 years & it kills me. Being without her also affected my development growing up & i see it now in a lot of things i do & the way i act towards things. I hate it but I always think "girl, it could be worse". then my father wants me to go to grad school & "study, study, study" but I want to be a model & have always wanted to since I was 11 (I refuse to give up on it, especially seeing how far you have come Cassey). I found it so beautiful how your parents learn through both of you that the land they arrived to build a new future for them and their family also provided the way to be successful and happy following your personal dreams and goals and not a “prescriptive” set goal. With all their suffering and struggles being a doctor or lawyer etc was the way these saw for you guys to have happiness. But because of you guys’ tenacity to be true to who you are, they learned a beuatiful lesson too! All the blessings to your beautiful family!

Thank you for sharing your family story. My parents lived a similar story as your parents. Looking back, I'm so proud and respectful of them and all immigrants who had to flew their own country, looking for a better future. They work hard everyday to offer me the childhood and teenage years they never had. What we have, they have built everything with their own hands and with the help of many kind people. ❤

I felt really connected to this story!
My parents were just like your parents!
My mother was a boat person and left to come to America, her mom was in a separate boat but during a tragic storm I believe, their whole boat sank. My father was also in the Vietnam War, he talks about many stories of what has happened and how he felt during the war.
The messages will really stick with me, thank you so much for making this video, Cassey (: ❤️

I find inmigrant's stories fascinating. I large portion of my family came from Italy to Chile, and hearing why they came here, what challenges they had to face and how did they succeded here is amazing. Same with my fiancee's family, inmigrants from Croatia and Libya. Your parents were very corageous to flee from Vietnam, but specially your mom looks as such a strong woman. It's clear why they wanted a secure future for you and your sister, and why at the beginning they didn't "get" your passion; but is awesome to see that now they accept it :) Great video Cassey!

What a beautiful video - thank you for sharing and thank you to your family. Your parents are truly inspiring. I'm loving reading everyone's comments. My parents came from Mauritius to the UK and have worked so hard, doing jobs others didn't want to do. Whenever I feel a little low I think of them and they motivate me to keep going and keep pushing forward to my dreams xx

Those kinds of stories are always one of my favorites to hear! ❤

Cassey. That moved me to tears. To think of all the near misses and things that made your life what it is today- amazing. I think it was my great great grandparents that came over on the boat from Finland and when they arrived in this country, their last name was really complex so they gave them a new one. I know what it was, but I have no idea why they moved to America. I'm inspired to find out. Thanks for sharing your families story with us.

Cassey, thank you and your family for sharing your stories. I can't agree more how important it is to know where we come from. Sometimes it's easy to think of the past as ancient history, but these events continue to shape our lives more than we know. And thank you for being a positive Asian-American woman role model for younger generations. You're such an inspiration!

Hi Cassey! Thank you for sharing your emotional conflict of wanting to be the obedient, perfect child but realizing that you had to overcome that in order to do what you wanted even though you were afraid that your family wouldn't approve. My parents are also refugees from Vietnam, and out of my entire family, I think I'm the only one who knows most of our family history because my mom is willing to share. Hearing their struggles made me who I am today, but it also brings up the conflict of wanting to make sure their sacrifices don't go to waste but trying to follow my own path. After discovering your channel, your videos and running have become a very integral part of dealing with this stress and I just wanted to thank you for giving me confidence physically as well as mentally as well as being such a wonderful role model. Much love from your popster.

The stories my parents, especially my mother, really makes me appreciate my roots and how I am able to live a better life than my parents, aunts, grandparents etc. I think this video really touches to many people like me because it's always nice to remember where we came from.

Her parents sound like amazing people!
You really can't blame them for wanting her to go to school to be a doctor. All of their lives they dreamed of that financial security and success. It sounds like they had a really rough life, and just wanted their daughters to never face anything like that. I'm glad everything is worked out now, and Cassey is successful and doing what she loves, because it's hard to give up something you're very passionate about. Especially since she's been used to bless and inspire so many people through her passion! God always works things out nicely like that.
Hearing their story really makes you stop and think about how thankful you should be. Never think you deserve more than you have, because what you have is already more than you deserve.
    God bless the Ho Family.

Your parents stories are so beautiful and courageous. Although my parents are super lenient and liberal on me, I can always understand why Asian American parents are more rigid and pressuring than others. Since the now first generation immigrants usually moved to America( the entire continent) under very difficult circumstances, they want to ensure their offsprings will not endure such hardships. All and all, I think it's all mutual compromise, in no way you should give up what you are passionate about for anyone but reconcil with your parents. Anyway, I love you Casey and be proud to have such an amazing family story.

Cassey, I can totally relate because I'm Hmong and my parents and grandparents went thru hell to get to the U.S. After the Vietnam war. Just to hear their stories breaks my heart. Also when your mom mentioned her parents saying that girls don't leave only the boys do - I was nodding my head like yes, that's still true to some degree today depending on if your parents are more modern now or not. Thanks for sharing your story!

That was a really touching story Cassey, we love you so much!
I have a similar background story with my parents both born in Vietnam and having to go through the same torture that your parents had to go through. The war was horrible and my dad made it to America on boat while my mom and her family made it by plane (they were really lucky). I was born in South Jersey as well as my 4 siblings. I am the eldest of 5, so 2 sisters and 2 brothers. My sisters and I didn't grow up luxuriously as most kids did back in the days. We didn't buy fancy notebooks or pencils or pens and had to reuse our notebooks if they still had pages blank. We were around similar ages so we shared our clothes a lot. My brothers on the other hand are a bit younger than us, so when I got my first part time job when I entered college, I wanted to make sure that they had all the materials they needed to succeed in school. And ever since I've been working from this job to that job while trying to fund for college, which is hard because our parents were considered middle class and we didn't get any financial aid at all. I eventually stopped going to college for a while to work and save up, but that didn't go so well so I'm currently enrolled to start college again with what little savings I have. Cassey you have inspired me so much to get going and to set goals and dreams and actually making it a reality! I'm so glad to be a popster! I still believe that my journey has not ended yet and that I will strive to have a better future!

Thank you for sharing your story Cassey!! My family and i are 100% completely Chinese. My dad has 4 other siblings and he was the youngest. They lost their parents (aka my grandad and grandma from my dad's side) when he was 16 so he and his brothers and sisters had to live together and rely on each other. My mom and her brother had a love-hate relationship with their mom (my grandma from my mom's side). My grandma is a really dedicated person so she would leave my mom and her brother with a close friend (their dad aka my grandad from my mom's side passed away when they were about 14) and then leave for months. My parents both support me in whatever I do so I'm extremely lucky in that sense. Since we are Asian, they do get really hard on me (as typical Asian parents do) but at the end of the day, they're only trying to build me up for a successful and easier future. And I love them so much for that.

Seems you have a really beautiful family. All kids struggle with parents' expectations. And all parents struggle with how much they should guide their children, and how much freedom they should give them; given what the parents went through, this is understandable. It's wonderful to see a family that has come to a new understanding, on both sides. Thank you for posting this beautiful story.

Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful and real history with your RUclips community Cassey. I was touched, this reminds me so deeply of my own family's story. My parents both the youngest of large Chinese-Vietnamese families living in South Vietnam experienced the same traumatizing situations. From hiding in the bomb shelter, dodging the many deceased outside their front yards, and making the long journey to safe international waters. They were attacked by Thai pirates three times, and witnessed some of the most terrifying things. My grandma kicked into survival mode and poured the nastiest vomit on her daughters to keep them safe from the pirates. Deprived of food and water the international ships carefully brought them to safety at a Malaysian refugee camp. There they stayed for 8 months until three churches in Abbotsford, B.C, Canada sponsored all 30 survivors of the boat. Today we are a thriving and proud family of many generations. Thanks for sharing again! Love you Cassey!
