- I painted my cheap old home depot box cabinets and they look amazing! I also dropped in some butcher block countertops, painted my walls, and painted my ceiling. All of this for less than $1,500. The cabinets look fantastic! I love the color so much you have me doubting the antique white/cream color I have been planning for years. I'm also planning on getting butcher block counters. I have dark hand scraped hardwood floors and love it!
I'm going to also paint my hinges. If I feel like it, I might paint over them with a metal paint using an artist brush.

Thank you so much for this. With such big increases in material and labour we opted to do all the painting ourselves, including old cabinets instead of getting new ones. Also doing the butcher block - the cabinet shop wanted $9500 for about the same size as you have which was astounding with the materials being so reasonable. So will be doing those too with help of friends who are more "handy".

Thanks, I have both sprayers, I did my bathroom last with the flexio 5000, great job it did. So I'm doing my kitchen and was wondering if using the pressure sprayer would've been faster on my frames. After watching, I will continue with the flexio on the door fronts until I get some practice cabinets for like the garage to use the pressure sprayer lol. Thanks for all the info.

I really loved your video! It was so informative and helpful! I'm buying a house with what appears to be a golden oak cabinets. I'm not a fan, I want white. Since they're already stained, will I be able to just sand, prime, & paint? Or will I need to break out the mud? Also, I noticed that you didn't spray the inside edges & doors on the last coat. Is that unnecessary? I have experience spraying walls & ceiling, but I feel that I can do this. For my larger projects, I get the mesh straining bags to pour my paint through. It seems to cut down on clogs, and they're cheap. TIA for your answers, and thanks again for this video!!

Been spraying cabinets for 20 years.
In the end..he used kilz 2..my choice. I don't spray boxes..I use a zip roller with a fine rolller..spray doors outside.
As far as sprayers..I NEVER use a wagner fill her up sprayer. Garbage.
Get a Graco airless at lowes for about 350..I bought the Harbor Freight Avanti sprayer..with tips and extension...paid about $300. Sprayed a 1800 Sq ft exterior..than a complete interior with cabinets. The pressure wasn't quite as good as the Graco..bit it worked flawlessly. Good video brother. Def great to help homeowners and diyers
So that zip roller, you mean just the little roller for the whole box? Inside too? I was thinking I don’t want to do prep work with all this overspray issue, so spraying doors outside sounds better. How much more convenient is that zip roller than the whole spray method?
@benfaubion5006 you can absolutely zip roll the entire cabinets, boxes and doors...but you must take everything off..hinges, knobs..than really everything well. Light sand with s sanding block, killz or kilz 2...sand between each coat..LIGHTLY...than a velour mini roller making sure to put it on lightly...2 to 3 coats almost comes out as good as spraying..and if you don't have experience with a sprayer or don't practice...you'll end up spending way more time cleaning up runs or overspray than just rolling them.

Thank you! Very thorough video! Question: would taking the doors out take about the same as taping the inside of the cabinets and painting them? I don’t want to paint the inside of my cabinets at all cause they are white and good enough :) But I also do dread taking the hinges out.

I have watched many of your full length videos and love all the detailed tips you give, and the paint-along footage for technique. I also found your website to be very helpful. I had planned to roll my cabinets with doors in place for several weeks and was experimenting with different types of 4" roller covers on scrap doors, including velour, flocked foam and Purdy 1/4" White Dove. I have only tried with the primer so far and know that doesn't self level as well as the urethane enamel top coats but cannot get over the stippled appearance and have to assume that will impact the ability of the top coat to be smooth. Plus it seems like an awful lot of work to roll compared to spraying, considering how big my kitchen and master bathroom are. So now I am looking at practicing with an HVLP with leaving the doors on the hinges like your video here.
Since HVLP results in 90-98% paint transfer do you think zip walls are necessary? I was planning just to put rosin paper on floors and counters within 6 feet of spraying.
I am planning on putting frog tape over all the hinges to protect them from getting sprayed . I have probably 100 cabinet doors altogether so that is why I do not want to take them off their hinges! (': I got professional quotes and they were about $15,000 for this large house. So thanks for all your help to empower us consumers. I learned to use the Smart Prime on real wood to block tannins, as well as on laminate (or a Bonding primer), and to use either Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel for top coat. I'm planning on using the same as above on all the trim and doors in my house. I'm going with white over dark stain and using a deglosser with green scrubber in place of a sanding sponge. Just curious why you don't use an electric mouse or orbital sander on the cabinets instead of a sanding sponge?
I'm also planning on using the Valspar Signature paint-and-primer-in-one on walls in egg-shell, do you still recommend that paint? I will be going over dark paint in egg-shell and some white paint with a semi-gloss sheen so I'm not sure if I'll need a separate primer first in those scenarios. I plan to use the Graco Magnum X5 roller attachment for the walls.

Even though HVLP does have great transfer rate, that 5-10% that is overspray can float a long way. Dust barrier poles are worth it if you want to keep the rest of your home clean.
Leaving your doors on is actually a great idea. It saves a ton of time and allows you to spray both sides at the same time, which saves even more time. You can absolutely do it and get professional results.
Why don't I use an electric sander? Actually, I do on a lot of projects. I actually use a way too expensive SurfPrep sander (which is amazing), but I try to make my videos more accessible for the DIYer. So I like to use cheaper sprayers, no expensive sanders, and stuff like that. But it sounds like your deglaosser and green scrubber should work pretty good. I do prefer actual hand sanding over deglosser, but it does work.
Valspar Signature is a great paint. You won't have any issues with that. Going over a stain or semi-gloss wall though, I would recommend pole sanding the wall before painting. Pole sanding is quick and easy, we do it on every job before putting paint on the wall.

Question: for newly built cabinets (cabinet grade plywood, and poplar faceframe) is it necessary to prime before painting?

Im a contractor and it's funny how i relate to your home projects with 5 kids running around screaming lol. typically the work is rushed and suffices, and not client perfect.
People that have not been in my house always say "WOW I CAN IMAGINE WHAT YOUR HOUSE LOOKS LIKE", my follow up is not what you would expect, the carpenters house is typically a mess with tools and kids, no time for home projects and weekend date nights with the wife and reset Sundays. Watching you here made me feel better , i am not alone lol 😂
Question about a Wagner product I bought years ago, the Flexio 590. Easy to clean, but, it gets so hot the paint is literally drying as it shoots out the sprayer and lands rough and stipply. I tried using it half a dozen times and its always the same issue. Have you had this happen to you because the flexio 5000 looks extremely similar and im wondering if that is an issue?
Typically, If im painting I run a Titan 440 with either a 210 or 309 tip and its glass! I love that rig

Excellent work! I am planning the same project and have done tons of painting, but nothing with a sprayer. 2 Comments: 1. If I saw correctly, you only put a top coat on the outside of the cabinets, correct? And is that how you complete cabinets for customers or is just that it doesn't really matter much for you personally? 2. You make some long videos, so.... It is always good to see a small snit bit at real time at different times of the project because there is a speed technique to pick up on. In between video speed can be sped up significantly to reduce overall video time. You do a great job covering all the little details to make a DIY'er successful. Keep it up, I'm a fan 🙂. I am originally from Grand Rapids MN, so I understand the need to have an outdoor rink for your kids. Hope one becomes a hockey star!
My kitchen was a bit different. I have 5 kids who ruin everything, so I’m not going the extra mile in my home like I would for my clients. Also, we are actually hoping to remove these cabinets in the next 2-4 years. The cabinets are cheap,flimsy stick cabinets from the local hardware store. So, for my house it was quick and simple.

If you mean to fill the grain on already painted cabinets before you paint them again, yes. It works great.

Go for it. If they're 1960's cabinets you've got nothing to loose. Get a Flexio 5000 (which is super easy to use) and spray them, you'll love it when you're done! Flexio 5000: amzn.to/3ONwtZM
Does the flexio series allow for extensions to be added?im asking because I just bought the Flexio 5000 on your recommendation. Just did 2 rooms in our home with it and loved it.
Glad you love it! If you mean extensions as in a longer air hose, I don't believe it does. It would be nice to have a longer hose, but I haven't found that to be too much of an issue.
you need a better quality airless, something like a titan 440 will good a great job and it will be easy with the right tip

Also, nothing is worse for paint than hand oils- I would put handles on, nice deep ones.

OMG! After watching multiple videos like this, I often wondered why they couldn't just leave the doors in place. But they, so I thought I had to. You just cut my workload w all removed theay down! Any tips on keeping the paint from running for a first-time spray painter?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving doors in place. It can make a ton of sense in certain situations and it can save you a ton of time. For my kitchen, my cabinets and hinges were so cheap/low end and the hinges were hidden, so painting them made perfect sense to me. I've also painted over hinges (and left doors on) when a friend I painted for planned on replacing them and another time when painting for my wife's friend and she ordered new hinges, so we left her doors on and painted over the hinges, then she replaced them later on.
I do get lots of nasty comments I have to delete about it though. Usually from faceless accounts who've probably never painted before....
Anyway, tips for a first time sprayer... I would set up some cardboard to figure out my sprayer on. Dial in your spray fan on the cardboard before shooting your cabinets. Then when you spray the cabinets, start first on the back sides of the doors to get the feel down. Runs on the back are not nearly as big of a deal as runs on the front.
Lastly, don't spray too thick. Light spray is easier to fix than heavy spray with runs.
Why remove everything out of the cabinets when you did not paint the inside and just masked them off? Couldn't you just have taken out the stuff you needed for a few days and pushed the rest back enough to mask off the front of the cabinet?
de glosser works too instead of sanding especially upper cabinets is hard.

What would you do differently if you were working with previously painted cabinets?
I have that sprayer you used on the ceiling. I have yet to use it. I know it says you don't have to water the paint down, but do you think if you do, it would clog less? Just curious on your opinion on that?
And how did you keep from getting over spray on the ceiling while painting the cabinets? Do you have that much more control with that other sprayer?
Two questions: 1) Is the 20% water cut good for any part of the country, any humidity, or does it need to be adjusted based on location? 2) Do you not recommend the Flexio 5000 for bigger interior/exterior jobs because of performance, or because you have to fill the paint reservoir so many times? 1) I've only painted in MN, so I wouldn't have first hand knowledge of other areas. But my assumption would be 20% works no matter where you are.
2) Mainly filling the reservoir. It does spray slower too. If you don't mind refilling and going a bit slower, it's great.

Question: I noticed you painted the ceiling first and didn’t protect it when painting the cabinets. Does the Flexio 5000 not have much overspray? I’ve never used it, but my cabinets are about a foot lower than my very high ceilings so I’m wondering if I need to worry about overspray on them or not.
It really doesn’t. If any hit the ceiling it was 100% unnoticeable. But this was also my own home, I tend to be a little more carefree at home!
Do you caulk the floating panels of the doors to make the finish look even better or not? I have heard conflicting thoughts on this.
You shouldn't because the wood is going to contract and after some time the caulk loses its hold and they end up looking like poop
If someone could help me out, I painted the boxes and cabinets with a brush and foam roller. Would it still look good if i did the second coat of primer with a sprayer. First coat is a little streaky

To make your cabinets look like they were finished and installed instead of painted in place caulk against where they meet a wall, smooth out with finger and rag then take a putty knife and pull it along where you caulked till you have a distinct break.

Sorry, when it comes to that, I'm a hack!! I'm no countertop guy, I just struggled until they came off. It was my own home, so it was ok.

Good video, the only thing I didn't like it was that you should remove the doors and spray them separately. Like this you've sprayed hinges too, which is not good.

I always thin when using an HVLP and spraying a fine finish on cabinets or furniture. If using an airless, thinning isn't necessary.

No, but I'm always willing to try different products, especially on my own home. Smart Prime is one of my favorite DIY primers.

My understanding of the 4000 is that it is the same as the 5000 except that the 5000 is basically it's own carrying case (if that makes sense). The turbine on the 5000 is basically the carrying case.
