- Join me as I tackle a 1980s kitchen makeover! The dark oak cabinets and built-in toaster brick arch had to go, so I sanded, primed, and top-coated the solid oak cabinets to bring them back to life. Watch as I transform this outdated kitchen into a modern masterpiece, ready to hit the market!

This is a family business. We take care of our customers. Thank you! 🙏
Love your attention to detail! Thanks for the video!
OMG! I have that same green belt. What are the odds? I love your work. Because of your videos, I am in the middle of painting 40yr old cabinets in a bathroom. I never would have though I could pull it off without you. Thank you!
Ha! That's awesome! Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!
Love your videos. Great job as always. I am a painter as well. I paint all day then come home and watch you paint when you put out a video. Doesn’t make much sense lol. But very satisfying watching someone else. And never to old to learn new things.
That’s awesome (I do the same thing!). Thanks for watching!
Just don't pull a permit in Maple Grove Just finished a flip up off Zackary and the worst part of the project was dealing with the absolute stupid of the ignorant inspectors - from the electrical to plumbing to mech - wow never in my 30 years have I seen something like this. If you wanted to change an outlet they will look at all the electrical and could cost you 5k for that outlet swap. Anyhow, now the venting is done I love the vids!
We all need to vent! I did my basement a few years back and had a great inspector in MG. Nice guy, super helpful. Probably depends who you get. Thanks for watching!
❤This guy great teacher. His experience really helped me. I’m getting ready to for my experience.
Great video! Thanks for all that you share… it has been very helpful!
I like that Frog belt you had on!
I’ve got quite the fashion sense….
Great video as always.
Just wanted to say that I used all your advice to paint my kitchen cabinets on the house I just bought. Used the grain filler, Benjamin Moore, etc and they turned out great. Thank you for being an amazing resource!
Good to hear! If you're open to sharing pictures of the project, we'd love to see them! ryan@diypaintingtips.com
Thanks to your tips on prev videos i did almost pro grade spray on cabinets. Same paint used in this video, SW Urethane lays down awesome, it looks orange peel but disappears IF temps are low and no sun or wind. I used a Homeright Finish MAX sprayer with green tip 1.5. thinned about 10 percent. i did 2 coats over maple cabinets.
That’s awesome to hear! If you ever feel like sharing pictures, we’d love to see them. Ryan@diypaintingtips.com
Nice!
It's so great seeing the FLEXiO 5000 in action! The finish on those cabinets is so smooth & this dated kitchen looks totally new again!
Thanks so much!
Maple Grove MN? If so... Let's go!!!
Yep!
I truly appreciate all the valuable tips that you have shared here, the most comprehensive I have seen. I have been watching oak cabinet painting DIY videos for a few years now off and on. Honestly. a great deal of the DIY videos do not achieve the same professional quality results. After watching your videos I feel motivated and confident that I can achieve quality results.. Thank you
Thank you, I already learned so much from watching your two videos. Could you tell me how much should I expect to pay for a project like this (kitchen cabinets)
Hiring it out, $4,000 - $7,000 depending on who you hire and size of your kitchen.
DIY - $300-$500 for materials and an extra $250 for a Flexio 5000 sprayer if you need a sprayer.

Do you have any videos with pricing tips? I’m new to the industry and want to make sure I price accurately for future clients 🙏🏼 I’ve watched so many of your videos and so grateful for the content!
I don’t have a video as I hear this channel towards the DIYer, but I do have a post I wrote on my website about this a while back that could help. diypaintingtips.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-paint-kitchen-cabinets/
What filler do you use to fill knob holes? Is there a specific technique?
Thanks you for sharing...your doing great job on teachning🙏👍👍🙏👍🙏🙏 a question…why you don't use sanding Machin for sanding cabinets?
I do occasionally (just not usually in video). The main reason you see me use certain tools on this channel is because I am trying to do everything with DIY methods. The channel is DIY Painting and I want it to all show methods that an average homeowner can do. If I pull out my $500 sander, $700 vacuum, and $2000 sprayer, that's not really DIY anymore, but Pro Painting Tips. Know what I mean?
@@diypainting yes thanks .wish one time you paint with a foam roller n brush as well….I appreciate
Long time fan of yours. One question though. If you want to paint the inside of the boxes, is it ok just to spray them without any prep, except maybe a light sanding to help the paint attach better?
Thanks for watching! Absolutely. I just make sure they are clean, give them a light sand, and vacuum.
Is it possible to use a roller for painting on the cabinets? I am doing this on a vintage camper and all the walls are wood grain. I've sanded everything down and vacuumed. Started applying the USG but its an insane amount of handheld brush work. Will a roller do the trick? Or will it not get into the grooves enough?
A roller can work great. Just thin the USG down a bit or it won't roll very well. make sure to work it in a bit too. A foam roller also works great for priming and top coating if you don't mind a little bit of texture (not bad though, just more than spraying).
I’ve watched several of your older videos where you use the old-school air sprayer. Does this sprayer provide the same level of finish?
The Wagner Flexio 5000 can produce an incredible finish on cabnets, on par with far more expensive sprayers.
Any recommendation on rollers that leave the smoothest finish? I can’t seem to find one that I really like.
I've used these and really like them when rolling on a finish: amzn.to/3WlpThN
Great video! I know you didn't use Zinsser Smart Prime in this kitchen cupboard reno, but I seen you recommend it in another one of your videos as one of the best to prevent bleed through with original oak. I have been having that problem with other primers and wanted to try the Zinsser Smart Prime, but I can't seem to find it on Amazon or any local hardware stores. Does it no longer exist? My search keeps redirecting me to Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye. Does that have the same quality as the Smart Prime?
Zinsser 1-2-3 is fine, but I wouldn't use it. If you have a Sherwin close by, go and ask for Extreme Block Water Based Primer and use that. If you have any bleed through after that, my guess is it would only be small spots. If you have some spots, hit those with a spray can of Kilz Original. That's what I do and I don't have any issues.
Thank you so much! I will try that:)
do you caulk the inside panel door seams?
Absolutely. If you do, it could potentially crack as the wood expands and contracts with the seasons if you use a low quality caulk. Choose a high quality caulk with high elasticity and you should be just fine.
Would you recommend thinning Cabinet Coat at 20% using a Graco True Coat 360 airless.
The TrueCoat 360 might be able to handle it unthinned. But 5% still might be a good idea.
@@diypainting thanks
Are you sanding between topcoats?
Yes. I use 220-320 grit pads between top coats.
Why don’t you use an orbital sander with a soft pad for curved edges to knock down the bulk and only hand sand where orbital can’t reach ?
Orbital tends to be too aggressive for this step imo. They can easily sand through finish, grain filler or primer way too easily. I prefer the control of hand sanding, but I have started using a 3x4 sander lately and found it to be a pretty good balance in between the orbital and hand sanding.
@@diypainting yeah I thought that why you hand sand but with the festool ones I think you can change speed and have number 1 setting and it’s not so aggressive
