8th and 9th gen Honda Accords with 4 cylinder engines have a super small OEM 51R size batteries. These only have 410cca when brand new. Within a few years this battery will fail you at the worst time.
This video shows you how to upgrade your size 51R battery to a size 24F (35 will work too) without buying any new parts from Honda! Enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

My father’s 2002 CRV has the same size battery. He has no problems starting the car. I put in a solar panel with a charge controller to keep the battery topped off a few years ago to improve battery longevity under the theory that lead acid batteries die sooner when sitting discharged. It is connected through the OBD-II port. The battery has been problem free for nearly 6 years.
That's one way to solve the problem.
thanks, bro for your video. My Honda Accord 2017 Sport has battery 51R died at 33k miles only, so I just go to Costco and buy a new 24F -700CCA - a battery that costs only $90 bucks. and it works like a charm. thanks again
Thank you my guy. I'm glad i wasn't the only one thinking the same thing. Once again great minds think alike and RUclips brought us together
I'm doing the same thing on my 16 Accord Sport, I will cut the plastic base to make it fit somehow since corrosion might hit the chassis if the battery starts leaking for some reason. Great video;)
If you get an AGM style battery you don't need to do that as they are sealed designs
The battery tray also contains the liquid overflows from the battery in case the acid boils over. I think you should change the tie down to keep it more secured.
I was about to go buy the battery cover but after watching your video not really and saving almost 50$ besides the new battery. Thanks for the video just what I was looking for.
Happy to help, thanks for watching! Still going strong since I did this in my car!
Thank you!!! I just put a 35 in my new 2010. Was just about to buy a holder! The tray works for the 35 size so you coulda left it
i just upgraded to a 34N - 945/800 crank amps ! ordered an OEM Accord box tray and tie downs fits snug on my ELEMENT👌
Very interesting that they would have such a small battery to begin with, I'm going through that issue right now with an '08 accord. Will look into a 24F as a replacement thanks a million 👍
Thank you for your video. I swapped out the old battery (which had been leaking) removing the battery cover and box. I did have difficulty adjusting the original battery hold down. I straightened it out too much and it didn't fit well at all. But no worries, I ordered the v6 battery hold down on eBay and that fit like a champ.
Glad to hear it, I love my bigger battery! I hope it works awesome for you with colder temps coming! Thanks for watching.
can u give me the ebay link
@@johnwallycabanas3195 - here you go! - www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Honda-Accord-3-5L-V6-Battery-Hold-Down-Tie-Bracket-Clamp-Plate-Set-80D/302623305756?fits=Year%3A2017%7CModel%3AAccord&epid=1729845970&hash=item4675c1301c:g:8zoAAOSwh21aejOx
I tried this battery on my 2017 Accord Hybrid. The battery is too deep for the car but I was invested so this was required. Drehmel shave the bottom flanges off the battery. Replace one J bolt with a custom bracket from a fender bolt to the hold down clamp. Flatten completely the top bracket and drill out the j-bolt holes. Allow a couple of hours for creative redesign of the mounting with a new sheet metal bracket extension.
Thanks. Helped a lot.
Thanks man, straight forward, no nonsense video.
Update: I've put LEDs in everywhere, and went and found a 24f AGM battery by Northstar. 840cca and 76 amp-hours and 160 min reserve capacity. At rest it's 12.9, and the alternator is pegged at 14.4. Car doesn't dim when turning over, the lights are a bit brighter as well. Honda should have, at minimum, put a 35 in the 4 cylinders. The Canadian market ones, I believe come with a 35 (and heated rear seats in any EXL sedan as well).
The 10th generation is markedly different, so my view is only the 9th generation.
No Cana da got the 51r
You might want to upgrade the negative battery to the V6 2 AWG (thicker) cable. I think NAPA has one for less than $20. Honda has the perfect one but is a little more.
If one hasnt bought battery in a few years the sticker shock is impressive. But that goes for just about everything. Good to see another vid!
Thanks for watching. The funny thing is the smaller 51R size battery costs almost $30 more than the larger batteries I chose to install, you save money by completing this change! Haha
@@Jasonoid That's crazy. The older Rodeo I just bought has a new battery but looks like it belongs in a Geo. Will be upgrading for sure. I go pretty far out in the woods. I don't like to take chances. Still enjoying my solar generators! :)
@@sksupply I use my solar generator all the time, I run my ICECO 12 volt fridge off it, super nice not to pack ice anymore. I have another solar project coming out soon. Just waiting on parts! Hope you enjoy that future video.
@@Jasonoid Good idea. I've looked at a few fridges. Look forward to the next project.
got a tray at a-hole zone with a new metal tie down. 24f battery and longer tie down j-hooks at wally's world. had to reposition computer an inch up . had a dead cell in honda's "lawn mower" battery. 2012 civic.
One correction.
I have a 2013 Accord exl v6. It came with a 24f. It's only 550cca, but had everything short of gps, and LED headlights. I'm looking at a beefier 24f so that with all the tech, it isn't sluggish.
But the video itself was fantastically put together!
That's interesting, I'm wondering if the stock battery size is different per region? My friends v6 came with a size 35 battery. Thanks for watching!
@@Jasonoid I'm in the Northeast, so it's a possibility. I know the South sometimes gets lower CCA batteries because there's less cold to deal with
I wound up putting a 34r AGM with a spacer by East Penn in. 750cca, 120 minutes RC. Finding a 24f AGM would have been $300.
@@ganzonomy Still a great upgrade from the stock battery, you should get great performance on it.
@@Jasonoid I went from a 550cca 24f that was 12.29v and 629cca on the tester to a 750cca 34r AGM that tested at 13.09v and 1025cca. The startup is now violently quick. And the headlights no longer dim when using ac, power windows, etc. AGM is awesome 👍
I did this upgrade yesterday. So worth it.
Makes such a difference!
thanks Jason, will attempt this tomorrow!
How did it go? You like the outcome?
@@Jasonoid Went from 35R to 24R AGM. started like a beast!
Didn't those two metal tabs that the J hook fits into - weren't they too close to allow the wider 24F to fit flat on the metal tray (@1:49)? I've seen videos where one is bent out. Did you just place the battery on top of them? Wouldn't it rock? Thanks.
You can always upgrade the battery brace later for an adjustable or or correctly fitted one for as. Little as $6 using the same J hooks.. 🎩☯️♠️
Thanks for the tip!
My 2009 CRV has one of those 51R batteries in it and I haven't been able to get much more than 3 years out of any battery in that car. I wonder if that 24F would fit in my CRV next time? I think they put a low amp alternator in it too.
It might, check out some CRV forums online. They probably have some people that have upgraded the CRV starter battery already. That 51R battery is such a joke. It's the same size as a power wheel battery.
Any advantage going to a 24 instead of a 35 in a hot climate like Dallas Texas? 35 allows me to keep the tray and heat shied.
Not a huge advantage. I always go with the biggest battery due to my harsh winters. Anything better than the 51 size battery will be amazing!
A bigger capacity battery for any vehicle is always a benefits on Texas whether hot or cold climate. The weather swings in either extremity.
I'm going to do this to a 2006 Honda Accord. I hope it works the same way.
Did it work?
@@virenpatel9973 I wound up not doing it as it was my girlfriend's son's car that I bought for him. We broke up.
Will the 24f 700 cca battery work for a 1990 Honda Accord lx
It should work fine, it's a different model so it may be wise to check different videos
Does the larger battery stress the alternator?
It's been fine ever since I installed the battery, that was a long time ago. It's been so nice to be able to start my car in the winter and be able to listen to music without the battery dying. Such a horrible stock battery design!
What about ground wire
Awesome Man.
Perfect! My wife has killed the battery in 14 Sport twice in the last month. With the radio. What a bad design.
Same happened to my wife and her friend! Such a small battery. Haven't had any issues since the upgrade! :)
@@Jasonoid I just finished the battery upgrade to the 24F, it starts SO much better now! Thanks!
My tsx needs a bigger battery, wonder if this would fit
It might be similar enough, check out the Honda forums. Tons of knowledge online about battery swaps.
I need help on my 2000 Honda Accord, My battery keeps dying and I would have to jumpstart it everytime, I’d be down to get a semi overkill battery but I don’t know which one to get
I don't have a 2000 honda accord. Check out the Accord forums online via a google search. You will find very helpful information on larger battery sizes for your model in particular.
@@Jasonoid thank you
I got problem already with that 51r group battery 500cca, I do uber & have many electronics devices, I wanna upgrade it. but I went to many of this autozone, pepboys & they don't recommend to upgrade the battery cause they says that it has more amp can cause problems, I have a CRV LX honda 2017. 2.4L. I don't know what to do. Thx..
I think those companies don't want to be liable for any changes they make that aren't stock. If you make a change like this you have to do it yourself. I have been driving my accord for over a month with the new battery and haven't had any issues. You can always stick with the v6 battery size, the 35 and you'll be okay. I went with the slightly larger battery but it did take more work to get it to fit. I'd recommend the size 35 if you want to keep it closer to stock. The size 51r is a joke!
@@Jasonoid that's totally true, thank you so much, god bless man
David_20 _ your starter will only take what it needs. Having more CCA won’t damage your vehicle, in fact, it can only help when you’re in colder situations when you need it. They just don’t want to be liable if it messes up somehow.
A 24F and a 35 will fit fine, don’t worry.
my 2015 crv 51 500cca same situation. alwasy wont star at winter. after this video i going to buy a 24F.
Did you upgrade the ground cable? If not wouldn't it burn down the car?
The car still pulls the same amount of amps/power, no need to upgrade the wiring. The larger battery just has more capacity so you get longer running times. No burning down the car lol
@@Jasonoid ok thanks
But why does so many people even replace a bigger battery tray for? When i upgrade the OE 51R battery to group 35 battery i did not replace a bigger battery tray but instead still use the original battery tray. Still fits but just a bit tight..
my group 35 battery fits in the OEM group 51 battery tray. No need to remove it or buy a new battery box. You do need a new bracket holder though.
My new battery didn't even get close to fitting in the stock tray. Maybe your car originally came with the larger battery and someone bought a smaller on before you bought it?
@@Jasonoid i bought the car brand new frm dealer. It fits but not fully flush. Its like sitting on the lip part of the tray but still works anyway. I just had to remove the battery cover out cause that would fit onto the group 51r battery only. But your video is group 24 though. A bit bigger than the group 35 like mines. Im just stating even for group 35 people still buy the honda v6 battery tray lol . Mines fit pretty well on the group 35
@@huyquoctran2088 I am going to try this today. I have v4 Acura TSX
With a larger battery any consideration to upgrade the negative cable to a larger gauge?
My stock cable is a bigger enough gauge not to worry about it.
does it screw up cars computer when you disconnect the battery ?
No, it won't mess up anything. Some cars do need the auto windows reprogrammed or sunroof open and closed fully to get them setup again. All in the owners manual for your vehicle.
Never heard of them, I'll check them out.
AWESOME!!! THANKS DUDE!
✌️👀👍
Do you know if this will work on a 07 Honda accord 2.4?
It could be similar, check out some online forums for your model year. I'm sure you'll find something about batteries!
@@Jasonoid I've seen people put the bigger batteries in this model but they are all showing buying the new battery tray for 6 cylinder and all.
Probably would be the best option. I need to order one. My battery isn't leaking right now so not an issue... Yet haha
am i able to install a 24f into my 7th gen?
It might be possible, I only own an 8th gen so I'm not sure about the older model years. There are lots of forums online that would discuss the potential.
Yess
nice video
Thanks
Have you noticed any improvement with idling, interior lights not dimming, things like that? Thank you!
None of that happens anymore! New battery so much better!
@@Jasonoid so it did happen before? Just asking because that’s what my accord is doing. The dimming is very slight but if a bigger battery might fix it then I’m going to upgrade it. And thank you so much for the quick reply!
@@WavyFBaby yeah, mine did the same thing with the lights dimming and the slow rain wipers. And anytime it was like 20 degrees outside my car wouldn't start. One time I listened to the radio of 20 minutes and the car wouldn't start! It was really annoying! Now I don't see any issues and it starts up quick!
@@Jasonoid awesome. Honestly thank you so much. I’m going to install a bigger battery and I’ll put an update in the comments with some feedback. Great upload by the way 👍
@@WavyFBaby did you upgrade it yet?
With a battery leak and no tray is no good for your car!
they use a 51R battery in a 2016 accord as well...junk.
This upgrade should work great as well. Still going strong on the same battery, no issues
@@Jasonoid did the swap finally 👏 great stuff! Thanks
Clear diction
so it wont fuck with the alternator?
Nope
