@@ganzonomy My Group 51r had similar CCA to my Group 35. Both had around 500. Given that it's a 12v system I think you're okay. The starter motor should pull as much power as it needs. But if you find out evidence to the contrary feel free to share it with me. Thanks again.

    • @ganzonomy
      @ganzonomy 3 года назад

@@TheSwitzAutomotive my 51r was rated at 500, my 35agm is rated at 675. The AGM though tested at about 1000. AGMs also can charge faster and release energy faster than flooded, and they can potentially hold more voltage and more amp hours.
Mine is 675cca / 110 minutes rc / 59ah and AGM, for reference.

    • @ganzonomy

@@TheSwitzAutomotive I also upgraded my 2013 V6. That car came stock with a 550cca 24F (bigger than 51R in the 4-cyl), but it has everything bar GPS. So I went with a Northstar 24F. (840cca / 76ah / 160 min RC). It's almost like stuffing a group 31 in a 24F size battery. The CCA is almost 1200 at rest, and i get 14.9v at 2500rpm cruising with 14.4v at idle. The car turns on 1, maybe 2 cranks, and they're fast at that. So it's not just how big the battery is, but i feel some of it is also the CCA, the quality of lead and connections, etc., There's a great feeling when you can get in a car with the lights on, and the lights don't dim.
If Honda has to put a big battery in, they don't put much $$ into it. the 550CCA 24F that initially came with the V6 accord, that had to be upgraded to 630CCA for the V6 Accord by Honda because the 550CCA couldn't cut the mustard during cold days.
But back to the 2003, I think that the years of group 35 AGMs cranking the starter like crazy, may have taken a bit of a toll... but the starter is almost 20 years old in the 2003, and it may just be nearing the end. At least the battery in that one is 13v, and the alternator can get it to 14.2 volts, though I'm worrying about it too going (it's almost 20 years old as well).

When I lived in Colorado I always had a huge truck battery in my cars; the itty-bitty battery that the manual said to use just could not turn over the engine when it was -40, but something with double the CCA would do it just fine. It was easier to do way back then because most vehicles just came with a huge battery tray that wasn't cramped for space.

My 2015 Accord battery is only 410 CCA which is pretty low. As long as it’s 12V, I’ve read that CCA doesn’t matter at all. In fact, in (extreme) circumstances, you’d only appreciate higher CCA batteries. Your car will only take what it needs.
My OEM battery did last me 5+ years, but I think I’ve only driven maybe 4k miles in the past 3 since my mom gave it to me.

Okay, this note made my fall off my chair!!! Found that Honda's PDI (pre-delivery inspection) procedures include a NOTE: stating that due to parasitic draw these 2 fuses are removed during delivery and stored in the glovebox. So it is expected that there should be some draw...but should it be almost 1 amp?
Disconnected the negative battery cable and bridged the gap with a multimeter and saw a parasitic draw of 0.8-0.9 amps. From what I understand, this is too much and will eventually kill the battery. Just did this today so waiting to see if it's dead tomorrow morning or check the battery voltage.
    4. I pulled fuses until I could isolate the parasitic draw and found it to be the 2 - 10amp fuses for the Backup Main and Audio. Both had parasitic draw of about 0.4-0.5amps, adding up to about 1amp total
So I'm interested in any feedback on this matter but specifically wondering a couple things...
    1. Does anyone also have parasitic draws of this much? And from the Backup Main and Audio systems?
    2. I tried to search this issue and didn't come up with much. But did find that Honda's PDI (pre-delivery inspection) procedures include a note stating that due to parasitic draw these 2 fuses are removed during delivery and stored in the glovebox. So it is expected that there should be some draw...but should it be almost 1 amp?
    3. What is the Backup Main and Audio systems specifically? Seems highly coincidental they both have draws...is their wiring tied in together where there could be a common issue somewhere?

None of my vehicles are under warranty. So this is not something I've thought about. If my vehicle was under warranty and I wanted to put in a slightly larger battery I'd probably read the warranty first. I would then decide what to do. Thanks for watching!

So long as what you do doesn't cause damage that can be traced to it, want it's done right, I believe Magnusson moss act of 1975 would allow the warranty to be kept intact.
