If you're buying a German car and there is a knocking noise under the bonnet just ignore it. It will go away on its own eventually, nothing to worry about
Actually you should be concerned, because it could mean that the quality of the fuel you use, is lower than recommended by the brand. Modern engines will adapt to the low octane fuel, but on the long run it will surely harm your engine.
One thing with handling is if you live somewhere it snows it's a really good idea if you can to test drive the car when it's slippery in the winter. In my experience it can be night and day with some cars understeering a lot, but once the rear end steps out it comes suddenly and other cars being quite predictable and easy to point in the right direction. Small roundabouts with little traffic are great places to test how the car behaves when it starts to slide at a low speed. ESP/traction control systems can also vary a lot. Some are quite jerky and give a sudden and dangerous correction once they detect a slide and some traction control systems are so intrusive it can be hard to get up a slippery hill, even when they are turned "off" (on a lot of cars you can't turn it off). It's also a good idea regardless to learn how your ESP system behaves so you're prepared for its correction should you come into a sticky situation. It can't stop you steering into a ditch.
Hello Mat. I want to point out something that is missing in many review channels and that is reliablity and brand information. What I mean is if you review a perfect car from consumer point of view- nice interior, nice controls etc. but if the brand has too many faults in their cars that also should be under consideration. If i buy car for myself and the car is perfect from the outside and inside but from a brand that i dont like because of their low overall quality I wont bother buying it at all. Dont know if im correct but it sounds logically.
Andro Dimitrov if this is in context of this video it doesn't have a place here. This video is about test driving cars. What you're talking about is a process that should've happened before even going to a dealership and asking for a test drive. You wouldn't just go to a dealership and ask for cars to test without knowing anything about them - at least i wouldnt - its not a smart thing to do.
Caspar van Ommen yes but i meant why dont they do it in regular video review. Im telling this as an advice. This option woild be advantageous for many buyers.
If the considered car is good for you, you should forget all the bad talks about brand, cause you not gonna buy all the model line. You buy only this one and it does fit you well - so why don't buy? Maybe it's an exception of the rule, can't it be possible? I think, claiming all the whole brand good or bad completely is a big mistake. Every brand has both good and bad products.
You missed the most important advice: Make sure to take note on what extra or specific options fitted on the test car. Maybe the handling was excellent on the test car, but that was because of 3k extra Air suspension and rear-axle steering. Really annoying to forget to order those extras and the handling will become different on the custom ordered one if leaving those options out. Same could be said for almost any option. If the seats doesn't feel well there might be an other option that is more comfy, and so on...
In my country dealers do not let you test the car alone, one representative is coming with you and also they do not let you drive on specific roads but rather they have a pre-defined course where the car should stick to, if you so much as deviate from that path there will be unpleasantries
Great video, but there was no mention of the flick test, the water bottle test nor the stick of truth. All 100% legitimate test drive methodologies. :p
Great review but a major thing for me is definitely the spare wheel. A full size spare wheel, not that space saver shit that some car companys still give u. My 2017 Hyundai Elantra came wit 1 🙌
Ive done a couple of test drives, and almost every time the salesmen doesnt care about me. Had 2 volvos, sold those just because of the service. Bought an qashqai instead. It is more noisy and less comfy Yeah. But more modern, more rugged for my Need and Daym the service is AMAZING. Gonna buy an leaf as a daily driver as well
In Singapore, most test drives are 5 mins long at most..and they choose what route you'll take! One or two days is unfathomable to me, much less one week!
Pull up the trunk floor to see whether the car has a spare tire, also check whether the floor is made of plastic and whether it is sturdy enough to put heavy items or to sit. Case in point: the Golf Mat is driving has trunk floor which is made of plastic and does not rest on a sturdy metal piece, so you cannot sit there. Imagine going skiing, you want to put your boots on, but you cannot sit on the rear bumper/trunk - this sucks.
I have a doubt, I'm planning on buying a suv, I saw this car everything is well maintained, but the issue is it has driven 100,200 km, so my question is, is it worth it or will it have any problems in the future, does miles actually effect the car, btw the car was company maintained also, someone please help. Thank you.
Gavin Nash that’s his personal car, you absolute weapon and it’s not like they always prefer Volvo (which they don’t if you watch their head to head videos).
Mat owns the car? No, he explained in his video about this car that it is a Volvo XC60 press car from the press fleet, on loan! I think soon, he was saying he is hoping to get an Audi S6 or something as a loan car from the Audi press fleet... Actually, he's had this XC60 on loan for quite a while now, and hardly shown us anything about it...!
I cans save you a lot of time and worries, if you like VW Golf go and buy it it ticks all the boxes any way. If you don't you are a car person you buy with your heart so go and take the car you like - all in all modern cars offer quite the same follow your heart and don't regret the choice :)
There are two ways of buying a car. With you brain and with your heart. If you are buying it with your brain, you consider all these steps, shortlist a few cars, and then decide. Which is a good, logical, practical way of buying a car. But if you are that 1% of lucky people who can buy their dream car, then lucky you. You can buy any car, but you dont, you have that dream car in your mind, you just walk into a dealership and yell: That one in blue!

Borrow it for a day or two? I only wish. I live in the wrong country I guess, but a test drive over here lasts about 20 minutes. 30 if you are lucky. I was once able to test drive a car for 40 minutes straight, because there was an accident on the road leading back to the dealership and we were stuck in traffic.
Yep but also use the car as if its heading for the scrap, hack at the buttons/controls, close the doors like you wanna smash them, bounce up and down on the seats, make all the tyres go bald by skidding etc etc etc... in other words be like crazed chimp in there (just like Matt lol)...No wonder they don't let Matt review cars like a bugatti veyron xD
brotha, you're checking if the car is well suited for you, as if you'r buying a new car, it isn't telling about second hand car, if everyhing is good mechanically at first sight before giving it to mechanic
I am really old and have never taken a test drive willingly. Despite having never taking a proper test drive, I have never been disappointed with any car that I have bought, new or used. If you are too fat for the seats, then lose weight. If you know lots of old folk, who want lifts, then get a car that can’t take them, with low seats. People are the problem and not the cars.
Calvin Chang I had the same problem when I was on my Ps. My solution was that I pointed out that I was there to buy a car and if they didn't want to help me because of my license level then I was "perfectly happy to find somewhere else"

The Carwow practicality videos never show rear passengers wearing seatbelts, so I assume this isn't tested?
Step 12: when you're sure you love the car, just drive off with it.
Step 13: Car gets tracked and you get arrested.

In other words, try to imagine you're a carwow presenter making a youtube video and that's it.
In that case, you should just imagine a £5,000 check falling into your hand after you say "this volkswagen golf is great value for money!"

Matt the type of guy to ask the salespersons to sit next to him
I’m going for my first test drive tomorrow for my first car. Soo excited but nervous
Did you pass
Yes I passed in June 2019! 👍 3rd time lucky 😂

Hi there Mat!
Small Tip to add to the video: Don't forget to see if there's a car behind you when you're checking the brakes.
Cheers!
So I just now 2 hours ago bought my first car and NOW I find out you made this video, lol
If u dont mind what did u buy? And what are ur opinions on it if u still drive it?

How do you find about reliability of a brand new car & model? Only can relate to the previous generation I guess, but that won't be really accurate.

Last year my mum bought a 2018 Kia Sportage and we test drove a 2016 model
Tried to fit 3 people in the back of 718. Didnt`t work.
The thing I do before I buy a car is i rent the same model for a week and see how it is like it live with

That green subie though

Nice promotion of the Golf!

Excellent video, TYSM!
Make sure the windows go all the way down in the back!!
Just yesterday I did a test drive of a DS4. then watched a carwow video and found out that the passenger windows dont go down at all!
what do you look out for when buying second hand?
If you can rent similar car for a few days can really give you ultimate test drive. Can you stand for that hum if runflat tires ?
Great review but a major thing for me is definitely the spare wheel. A full size spare wheel, not that space saver shit that some car companys still give u. My 2017 Hyundai Elantra came wit 1 🙌

Charles Tosh have you seen German reliability? It's terrible!
Totally zoned out of the parking bit because of the green Scooby lol

Thanks Matt, buying my first car very soon, cheers.
Very useful
Thanks matt for doing this vid because i told the sales man that i want to take it out on my oun and he let me and the i bought a bmw m6
Is it a UK thing to "borrow" the car for a day or 2? lol
I can do it aswell in Portugal. If my parents go to our local toyota dealer they will even let them take a car for a week
Can confirm, I got to test drive a BMW for a day and a half in Portugal. Only had a KM limit I could do.
Probably only works for older people tho. I don't think they'll lend a car to someone that is between 18-25
I'm 25 and they had no problems lending me the car.
