I’ve been watching a lot of these videos. One topic I never see addressed is: How does the self employed owner/operator manage doing the jobs WHILE fielding calls and inquiries for new jobs?
Most small business owners will either use a technology platform or an affordable personal assistant / marketing team or a combination of both for fielding and coordinating new business.
I started my first business at 18 (18 years ago) called "Mike's onsite detailing". Pulled a trailer that carried everything (including water/electricity/etc.) so I could do a job anywhere. I also started using the pressure washer to provide personal and commercial services. Made $50k my first year and then sold it to one of my clients so I could start my next venture in a bigger city.
@@UpFlip I just now received this notification from RUclips lol I moved from Longview to downtown Dallas, TX, and started a Personal Concierge business around age 20. Any tower that could not afford a front desk person could now offer a 24/7 concierge-style service as one of their features. By 23 I was burnt out- I sold it off in pieces and dissolved other pieces while I was going through a divorce. Then moved to SD for the next venture...I've got a long story- started many companies like that for myself and maybe 25+ for others. Thanks for the attention/question- excellent technique.
I'm still looking into starting my own mobile wash company in Fargo, North Dakota. Commercial/residential cleaning. My primary demographic would be semi truck companies and farmers. I used to work for a guy who had a 3000 gallon tank in a straight truck. I have years and years of experience steam cleaning aka pressure washing equipment. One machine runs about $5000 plus water tank, spare parts, and hose, fuel costs. I know there is money to be made and I should get on this
Get it on! We believe in you! Sounds like you have lots of pressure washing experience which is a great foundation to starting any type of business. Do keep us posted on your entrepreneurial journey The Walters Show!
A few reasons commercial is more expensive than residential: 1. Insurance and 'red tape' requirements 2. Contracts will wrangle you in and if you screw up anything major on a commercial property they are going after the entity for sure 3. Chemicals and solvents required (also they will want MSDS) 4. Type of pressure washing - many times they want a higher flow, lower PSI with extremely hot water (depending on application allowance) and those machines start at 6-7k for the ones that can be rolled around and start at 10-15k for the trailer models 5. Net terms and retainage(rarely) - many times you will be looking at net 30 or sometimes even net 60 pay terms 6. Non payment - as crazy as this sounds, commercial work non-payment rate is multiple times higher than residential. Why? Go do a 50k job for a company and then when they don't pay you, even if they have the money, you have to sue them(worst case), they get to use your 50k to fight the lawsuit that you are rightfully owed, and worst case is that they will have to pay you the money they owe you, plus 5% per annum from date of invoice. In very rare instances will they have to pay your attorneys fees because they will say something is damaged an muck up the water in court. So, when you are playing with bigger $$$ invoices, it's way more likely to have some debts go bad simply because it makes sense from their perspective on larger invoices. No homeowner will risk mechanics liens and JP Court for a few hundred or even a couple thousand dollars because the retainer for an attorney is more than that. Bigger $$$ has bigger sharks that play the game at a higher level. I know from experience and had to learn the hard way.

You'll probably have to pay a marketing team. There's a bunch of guys out there running pressure washer businesses. What sets you apart from them? Any guy with the same equipment can do the same level of quality. It's about getting good leads and follow up business.
My dad and uncle use to run a gutter and power washing buisness. When I was 17 they hired me on for 10 an hour. Where I live and at the time was quite alot to make per hour for my age. They was making fat amount of cash off the power washing side alone but the real money was gutters 100%. Though I do recommend to anyone thininking of getting into powerwashing also consider maybe painting too. We could easily double our profits by simply doing some easy painting of decks and porches after power washing them and letting them dry.
Its hard to scale when the entry cost is very low and every time you train someone they go buy their own power washer. These kinds of businesses are usually one or two man bands. Notice this guy is out doing the work himself. Still better than working for someone else!
@Dylan Kenley ok all i really got from your comment is invest in better equipment. You point out a lot of the negatives but what would you do instead? I’m asking because I’m already on thumbtack and I’m considering adding this to my list of handiwork.
I started very similar like him. Your biggest hurdle is going to be lack of experience and the fact you wont know how much to charge. Incase anyone is interested you should be charging min $70 to $80 and once you get some good experience you should aim for $100 to $150 per hour

Everything he said was 100%wrong. The way he cleans a house is the reason insurance companies jack up the prices because people like him damage the siding. Who in their right mind uses a turbo nozzle that's meant for concrete only to wash vinyl. The "chuck in a trucks" that don't know what their doing do!
@@h2owashpros154 in that sense a turbo nozzle would actually be better than using a stationary tip. The turbo nozzle will keep the tip moving and make it less likely to do damage to the vinyl
That truck he’s driving could be all the marketing he needs if he set it up with a quality wrap. It would be a rolling billboard. If he’s content working five days a week and making 100k, good for him. He’s probably got a brother/cousin/friend that he could start bringing on and train and soon purchase another truck. Double the fun.
First off , move away from pressure and go soft wash route . Will give you a much more options for service you can offer and much more profit. Our average job is 1100.00 and that one house a day per crews and two crews running daily . Next get insurance , this will open up commercial jobs
I'd just like to say that my company caters to the market. Most of my jobs include cleaning roofs, preparing for paint, gutter cleaning and gutter guard installations, so until I see a use for a chemical system I'll stick to what works for my company. Just because I didn't use chemicals to clean this particular project, doesn't mean I don't know how, haven't in the past or won't do it in the future. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything, but I'm dedicated to learning and have spent a substantial amount of time learning new technologies. I know plenty of pressure washing companies that I sometimes team up with, I talk to my vendors about products and techniques, so I'm well versed in the many different approaches to getting jobs done. That being said, I'd like to encourage anyone looking to get started in the pressure washing industry to give it a go. It's well worth your investment!
Great story! How did the next venture go? What city was it in?

Go Bison!!
I miss Fargo, ND but not the cold.
A few reasons commercial is more expensive than residential:
1. Insurance and 'red tape' requirements
2. Contracts will wrangle you in and if you screw up anything major on a commercial property they are going after the entity for sure
3. Chemicals and solvents required (also they will want MSDS)
4. Type of pressure washing - many times they want a higher flow, lower PSI with extremely hot water (depending on application allowance) and those machines start at 6-7k for the ones that can be rolled around and start at 10-15k for the trailer models
5. Net terms and retainage(rarely) - many times you will be looking at net 30 or sometimes even net 60 pay terms

Great tip Matt! Be different than the competition.
I love your channel mate, the questions you ask is straight to the point no bs. Cheers from Australia
Great tips! Thanks Brandon!
Its hard to scale when the entry cost is very low and every time you train someone they go buy their own power washer. These kinds of businesses are usually one or two man bands. Notice this guy is out doing the work himself. Still better than working for someone else!

Hey hats off to you my guy. Not all guys can do that work.
This guy needs to do some research. I dont think he gave one piece of useful advice to start a REAL pressure washing business.

Good luck Jaw. Be sure to check out our blog on starting a pressure washing business and all the other videos we done on the topic!

I started mine with a $199 ryobi electric washer. You don’t need a $1000 pressure washer to start off.

You'll meet new, exiting folk and maybe make a dollar or two. Best of luck to ya! 💪🤠

Good job. But that 12 foot heavy fiberglass extension. Get an X jet... learn to use the bleach and soap and get you a 12 foot extension that is made out of aluminum. An aluminum 12 foot extension. Very rarely needed when you use ex jet bleach and soap to do the cleaning and detailing.
I've seen so many videos on this hustled, I've always wanted to give a try but it holds me back the fact that NO ONE talks about how do you get to use the home owners water if you don't have a water tank!?
Most pressure washing small businesses just ask permission from the client and most customers have no issue with you using their water.
It's standard that you use the customers water. No company just uses the water tank. The water tank just works as a buffer tank
