    Love that your giving alternatives to BRI products! Beginner artists are always at risk of becoming prey to the student side of the art supply market so this is a great way to steer them clear of products that are complete money-traps. Bravo!

    Perfect timing! I am furious with BRI and was going to support William (Bill) Alexander (Alexander Art, the ACTUAL founder of Wet-on-wet painting, the teacher of Bob) but with shipping to Canada a regular tube of white was $30CAD!!!! NO THX. So I was getting discouraged and glad to see this video. You're great at helping us newbies and we appreciate it 🙌

    I actually found a lady who is certified to teach Bob Ross and she sold me her paints and brushes (she is no longer teaching and does acrylic pours now). She told me that they switched suppliers and the quality went down, so obviously she isn't the only one to think so. Of course the company is trying to make even more $ off a dead man. I don't care thats it just business, it's wrong. I'm glad to have the original paints, but when they run out I will try the Gamblin! Thx!

    I just started oil painting about three months ago and I agree with everything in this (and your channel has generally been very helpful). I find the Gamblin 1980 paints to be high enough quality and the Windsor & Newton Tidy White is very thick. My advice for beginners is to stay away from the cheapest of everything (paint, canvas, and brushes). You won't know whether the problems you are having are because of your lack of experience or the poor quality of your supplies.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  Год назад

    On the subject of paint, if you're like me and bought 200ml tubes of Bob Ross paints, only to find that the oil poured out on first use, then I would recommend Coghlans 200ml reusable clear plastic Squeeze Tubes. Not only are they easy to fill but the soft plastic makes it easy to massage the oil back into. Also, its easy to see your colours at a glance ( I know wild has put out a video on massaging Bob Ross tubes, but that didn't work for me.) I had previously bought the Paint Tube Wringer (thank you Wild!) and that got a workout transferring 14 x 200ml tubes across. Awesome product.

    Great video as always, Wild! Old Holland is a brand I actually know of that’s even more firm. It’s supposed to be the most firm paint you can get supposedly but I wouldn’t recommend it for wet on wet, as it’s a very very expensive brand. I only use it for my portraits and still life which I do on 8x10 or 11x14 canvases.

    Hmm. One thing it wouldn't be advisable to do with Gamblin, or any other regular oil paint (with a couple of exceptions) is follow the Bob Ross advice on "thin paint will stick to thick paint" - it WILL stick, but sooner or later it's likely to crack. There could also be problems if combining Bob Ross mediums with regular oil paint. Stick with Linseed Oil and you won't go far wrong. Plus, there's no need to go through that "beat the devil out of it" ritual to clean brushes: apart from anything else, people new to oil painting aren't likely to have a huge studio in which they can send paint flying all over the place, and won't be wanting to paint wearing oilskins, either.
    I don't know exactly what went into BRI oil paint, and the company has never been very informative about it: Gamblin, however, list the pigment letters and numbers on their tubes - so you can tell what's in them, look up the pigment, and satisfy yourself as to whether it's lightfast or not. Most reputable companies do that, and it's a big advantage to the painter - especially with colours labelled Sap Green, Vandyke Brown, and quite a lot of others, which are all mixes of different pigments: but mixes of WHAT? Without that information on the tube, you've no way of knowing.

    I actually tried the Williamsburg Landscape set for $30 at Jerry’s Artarama. Professional grade with 11ml tubes. 37 ml Titanium white. Probably THE most highly pigmented paint I’ve ever tried with stunning colors. I usually use Bob Ross paints for things like bushes where lots of paint is required. And it doesn’t have Van Dyke Brown. But you’ll get a surprising amount of paintings out of this relatively small set of paints and the quality is unsurpassed.

    I've been wondering about this too. I am very confused. Thanks for the suggestions, Wild. And thanks to others for commenting as well. I will look forward to experimenting with Gamblin and Newton, and I will feel that this is just fine, and a "best practice, " that I'm aware of and familiar with other products.
    I'm not sure how to reconcile my feelings. Should I be disappointed in BRI because the Kowalski's are ruthless in business, or not nice people? Or because they cut Steve out, or because they make too much profits, or because their products aren't as good as they were, or because they take advantage of their suppliers and manufactures?
    What if everything was the same but Steve was getting a cut of the profits? Would this make BRI OK?
    I'm rather certain that if it wasn't for the Kowalski's I would never have discovered Bob much less painted wet-on-wet. Steve tells us that when he was young he wanted nothing to do with his father, or the business, and was estranged. I think this adds to my confusion.
    Should I stop taking classes from certified BRI instructors? My local instructor is amazing and I really like working with him. He painted with Steve THIS YEAR and he purchased a Steve painting, a Dana painting too, and brought them back to share with us, his students. Before the docu I wanted to take some "Paint-like-Bob" classes in Florida with the BRI team and maybe one day take the Teacher Training Seminar programs.
    It is good to read what others are thinking and doing. Thanks again!!

    Bob Ross said you had to use his paint for wet on wet painting because his paints were a "Dry Mix" designed for this purpose. Is 1980 a dry mix? I've tried this technique with regular Gamblin artist oils and it doesn't work, so I gave up trying to paint this way. Wilson Bickford is another famous wet on wet painter who also has his own paints too.

    Can't' believe the official Bob Ross ones had degrades in quality over the years. I remember that he was very particular about them because he wanted to be sure that people who got them could follow along. Couldn't' spread the joy of painting if they were frustrating after all. So I'd have thought that of all the things to cheap out on, it wouldn't have been the paint. Maybe the tool handles, dropping the DVD and saying to go online for instructions, etc...

    Great paints! 👍 I used them for a good while doing wet on wet. Once I started focusing on detailed direct style painting, upgraded to premium stuff, same with lead primed linen. Once you use that stuff, and go back to $1 canvas and paints...lol it's not even a comparison. But trying new paints and brands and canvases and linen and brushes and mediums, etc...is the only way to find out exactly what works best for YOU. also, you want to use stuff that excites you! All gamblin is pretty good, Winsor Winton aint too bad. Artist grade winsor and gamblin are darn good. Rembrandt very good transparent colors. Williamsburg, very nice and firm buttery paint. Rublev awesome EVERYTHING(authentic and traditional) M. Harding has fantastic paint. Old holland very nice. Blue Ridge oil paint THEE BEST paint for the most reasonable price. Big tube(150ml) of blue, or white, or burnt Umber or Sienna gna be $20. As opposed to $60-$90 for the other premium grades lol but, Gamblin 1980 isn't bad for price, real pigments at least, great texture, easy to find. Same colors avaliable on 1980 as their artist grade line(Gamblin artists oil colors)....great job brother! As always!

    Windsor and Newton’s student grade Winton series is very very firm. Especially the titanium white. It’s actually stiffer than the Bob Ross brand and they might actually be even cheaper than 1980 paints. At least with a coupon deal at Michael’s… What really stinks about BRI is that their paints and brushes are no longer made by M.F. Weber. It’s some other company and they’re also no longer made in the U. S and A. The new brushes are awful compared to the old ones and it’s kind of sad. The handles are different size and shape, the ferrule is a different size, the bristles are longer and more bushy. They splay out much worse and much faster. They really need to improve their equipment because the old brushes were top notch and honestly, nothing else compared to them. Now they don’t even make them anymore. Even with all of the negative feelings regarding the Kowalski’s, I would still be buying their brushes if they were of the same quality that they used to be. But they aren’t and there’s really nothing else as good. There are a couple competitors but nope, not quite as sleek and chiseled as the classic 2 in and 1 in brushes.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  2 года назад

      The Winsor & Newton Titanium White is one of my hacks for paint breaks cause it is so firm... It works wonders.
      It is a shame about the BRI quality - In my own personal opinion I would still recommend the Master kit for brand new painters ( cause its still the best way to jump in ) even with the trade down in quality. I am currently working on finding alternatives for BRI products ( I have a few videos on a few things, feels free to take a peak... But still looking for brushes). Be sure to hit that sub button so you know when I find some awesome brushes that will work.

    My issue with the Winsor & Newton Winton titanium white isn't a pure titanium white. It is PW4 and PW6. Loosely translates to titanium and zinc white pigments. Not the end of the world, because the BRI titanium is the same, PW4 and PW6 mixture.
    Gamblin 1980 titanium white is pure PW6. PW4 is called Transparent White (zinc white)

    • @PicksPaints
      @PicksPaints 2 года назад +1

      @@WildCreates nope. Not at all. My beef is they call it titanium when it is mixed pigments. It may be primarily PW6. I've actually found in some cases I prefer zinc white (PW4) over titanium. Titanium can cause your tints to become chalky. Where zinc is slightly transparent, and doesn't go chalky. FWIW, in the Gamblin 1980 Transparent White is PW4. It's a good arrow to put in the quiver 🙂
