Hey guys, if possible, stay away from those particle boards to paint on.. They have cardboard on the inside and they soak up the magic white and is not good.. Do yourself a favor and get real canvas, they are double and triple primed so the magic white works very well with it.. I've tried both to practice and save money, I now know it's not worth it and only use real canvases.. One more thing, it's best to get a canvas at least 16x20.. I happen to really like the size that Bob used, 18x24 canvas.. I think Bob's style, wet on wet, was designed for a larger canvas.. That's just my opinion.. Happy painting!
Paint With Bram also just launched his own line of paint brushes, and they do look different than the ones shown, so Im pretty sure they're not the same. And Bram's channel is awesome.
I have been using The Brandon Thomas line of brushes for 4 years now. Hands down the best wet on wet brushes out there. As with any brush it sheds upon first use like the. BRI brushes. His mediums are fantastic. I liked how easy they are to clean and keep shape. His Painting with Magic show is great as well as Wild Creats! Had to brag on your show also love your show!
10:00 - cheers for Eggbert! I've tried most/all of the things you recommend on here and they're all great suggestions. Another one is to get a quart of pure archival Linseed oil for $40 rather than pay $15 for a 4 ounce bottle.
Thank you Wild for all the research you’ve done to highlight art supply alternatives for the new painters out there. I appreciate your videos (especially the tutorials); they’re all very helpful! 😊
Well, I’ve fallen in love with you. Seriously, I’m a classic Bob Ross lover since painting with my grandmother in the 80’s and 90’s. It warms my heart to see fellow artists still enjoying his craft! Just now watching, but I am excited to see more. ❤
I've been looking for a strudy palette ;)! In all seriousness, I'm buying my first brushes and paints to try wet on wet painting, so this video helped immensely. Nothing like standing in Michael's or Hobby Lobby unsure what paint or brushes I should buy while googling these exact questions.
Hi there great video. Not sure if your aware but the wet on wet painter and cri bram bevins, who is also on youtube, has recently launched his own line of wet on wet brushes and they look great so may be worth trying to get hold of those to try out 👍
Oh man your right - I forgot about Brams ( love his stuff too ) I haven't had the chance to test those brushes out yet... I will try too soon. Perhaps do aa review on them.
Thank you so much for the guidance! Informative and entertaining. I’ve never painted before. But as a hobbyist musician and career chef I am well acclimated with the local artist scene in my city. Some of them being my very close and dear friends.. Some not so much.😎 Anyhow, I’ve always been fascinated with painting and art in general as long as I can remember. But I just couldn’t ever really draw for shit! Which made painting seem impossible to me. Than a couple of days ago I stumbled across a Bob Ross video on RUclips and decided to actually watch it. And after ten minutes I was awestricken literally blown away! He showed me it was something that wasn’t as unascertainable as I’d made it out to be! It felt like an epiphany! Now I’ve got the bug. Bad!! An I feel pretty terrible for just now like.. seeing Bob Ross a the message of the methods he was preaching entire childhood. 🤦🏻 Sorry these last two weeks have been life altering for me. An this “call to the canvas” literally happened like 3 days ago. I’ve never even commented on You Tube before. Your welcome! This my year of reckoning damn it! 😂🤘 So very long story very short I’m buying the brushes dude! Cheers . -We are all just colors in waiting. Unapologetically blended together by the artist known as time.
Watching Bob Ross is addicting ha ha ha... I love the call to the canvas - I might have to steal that from ya 😂😂😂 If you do end up painting with Bob... watch this video here: ruclips.net/video/MwD75p7l7bU/видео.html it goes over the easiest BR painting to paint. Its a great starting point. Cheers DUDE. OH and if you do buy anything dont be afraid to use my links - they help support the channel.
Yo! Been a follower since 2018 and I wanted to tell you how much I really love the content to this day! I'm finally picking back up the old 2" brush and start painting on the wet-on-wet style again! Thank you for putting out the hard work to keeping Bob's legacy alive and for those to experience the journey of enjoying this art style! 😃
Love the show brother!! I started off using cheap brushes to get my toes wet at first then bought a complete set of BR brushes. While I do love those brushes I also use the Brandon Thomas brushes. I’ve had better luck with cleaning his brushes and get roughly the same results with his brushes as I do with BR brushes. Keep up the amazing content brother!!
Hi Wild! I would definitely buy your brushes! You could have your portrait on the handles... You know, with the best looking hair. Thanks for your very informative videos. They really do help.
My beater bucket is a cheap kitchen wire rack from a dollar store and a black garbage can from home depot. Works great. Got this idea from one of your earlier vids. Decided to just go with the BRI bucket and screen because it was worth the $$. I'm going to look into the black gesso you recommended because I am currently using a tub like container (which is nice but not as convenient as a pouring).
I agree with all you said above. It can be a little tough to find a trash can that can accommodate the rack without being too big and bulky. You can always just buy an empty sealable squirt bottle and add your gesso in there 🔥
Good vid. I get everything at Hobby Lobby or Michael's with the exception of brushes - I do use the Bob Ross brushes, they work MUCH better for me. I haven't had any issues with paint since you showed me the cardboard trick to get it to break, thanks again for that!
I have one of those box easels set up in my room. Placing weights in the box portion is not an option for me since it has been claimed by one of my cats as her bed while I paint. Instead, I placed a couple of velcro strips on the bottom of it and it works like a charm.
Bwah ha ha - Well.... depending on the size of your cat it might be enough weight to hold it ha ha ha. Velco strips are a great idea - You can also use a bara clamp... if you ever decide you need to move the easel for any reason.
Love this video. I use a standard painters brush rack and a metal beater rack for the dollar store As for the large brushes, I use the natural bristle brushes from Menards. Usually in the wood stain area. These brushes are strong and long lasting. Work just as well as the others but moderately cheaper.
I have Bob’s, Kevin’s and Bram’s brushes. Bram definitely has the best liner brush hands down…also for a filbert I think. It is a little wider but amazing…Kevin’s brushes and super nice for bushes, trees…etc…they aren’t quite as tight together so easier to get a slay going of the bristles.
Oh man I am jealous of all the brushes you have... You are the 3rd person to tell me how good the liner brush is from bram. I hope I get to try them soon. Thank you for sharing your feedback ❤
Hi I am a newbie’s with Bob Ross paintings! I found your recommendations very precious, and I am wandering if you would recommend the set of Adam Lashley brushes like he uses to sell for the wet on wet techniques as well! Tky very much to answer me! 😊 from Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦
Hi, Wild! Loved your video, as always! I think you're the one who taught me to make a liquid white replacement by mixing titanium white paint and the Artisan water mixable linseed oil at a 50/50 ratio. It works pretty well, but I'd like to try adding the Gamblin Solvent Free Gel. Can you give me an approximate ratio for the 3 products? Thanks for all your help! Best wishes and keep up the awesome videos!
You can just sub out the Linseed oil with the gel if you want. The LS will give you more of a liquid white that flows (which is great for things like thing base coats, clouds and water line, etc ) The Gel will give you more of a creamy volume white that blend (which is great for things like base coats, clouds and building highlights, etc ) You can mix all 3 if you want... just play around with it :)
You are super welcome - This was a BIG video to make... so I am glad it helped. Make sure the thinner you are buying is artist grade. Otherwise it might be too strong in odor, vapor and can damage your brushes.
I have the Thomas set, his landscape brushes are much stiffer than the original Bob brushes (Weber branded) however I’ve had these brushes for 2 months now and the 2” brush has fell apart 2x, the ferrule keeps falling off. The tiny pin nails fall out then the ferrule falls off. I’ve re-glued, flipped the ferrule over and nailed it, both times they lasted a month. The 1” brush has a rather large dip in the center of the bristles. The fan brushes and liner are fantastic. The pallet knives meh’ I had one that was so tapered I couldn’t use it, he sent me another and the 2nd was better, more or less the same as Bobs. The Hake brush is really thick and super soft. I find it difficult to blend with, butI think that’s just because I’m not used to it.
Damn thanks for the huge breakdown and feedback. Sounds like on some of the brushes you got a bad batch.... because the ferrule shouldn't fall off. I would reach out and ask for a new one.
Another alternative to the Bob Ross mediums is the Brandon Thomas line and his stuff is very good. I used his Amazing White medium it's very good stuff. I am also using his line of brushes and they are very well made. Thanks for sharing another alternative mediums to the Bob Ross line. I got a set of the Gamblin 1980s paint for Christmas one year and I can't wait to try them. I heard good stuff about them. I never knew that BRI even sold canvases. Also you can purchase canvases that are already black if you want to paint on a black canvas. I have been uses various brands of canvases as along as they have at least 2 coats of acrylic primer/gesso and that has worked very well for me. And Also them Bob Ross canvases cost way too much for what they are. Yeah it is a very good idea to start out with cheap brushes if you are a beginner to develop your craft because you don't want the cost of entry of your classes to be too high like BRI does with their classes (Their classes more or less like a college class because you have to purchase the materials yourself and the materials are expensive.)
I have heard decent things about BT brushes. I would love to test them out... maybe he will see some of my videos and donate a set at some point. Thanks for your insight and input
So if you were to paint with water mixable/soluable paints, which brushes would you recommend? The Bob Ross brushes aren’t supposed to be washed in water, so what would you recommend as a similar alternative but water washable brushes?
You can use BR brushes with water... you just have to make sure you clean, condition and shape when your done painting for the day.... which is what I suggest. This product here is great for conditioning: ruclips.net/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/видео.html
As of May 2024, I wanted to say that Gamsol is only $4 more for the 32 oz over Mona Lisa in my local art supply store. I ended up going a little cheaper with Mona Lisa, but totally approachable if you're just getting started to pay that extra bit more for something that is superior quality (and safer for you).
I can’t recommend Paint with Bram’s brush line enough. Him and Steve Ross tested their line personally across the span of a year doing classes. They look different from the alternative line of brushes in this video. I can personally say that their line’s script liner is by far the best I’ve used.
Hi Wild, maybe, you could do a video on turning the Bob Ross oil paints into water mixable for people who don't have a studio, to use solvents. I've used Schmincke medium w, mix 2 to 1, I've also washed my Bob Ross brushes with soap and water, which should be a no no, but if you wrap them tightly in paper towels, leave them till they are dry, there isn't a problem. Maybe you could do a painting this way for us
I have been told ( but can't confirm ) to make any oil paint water mixable all you do is add dry powdered detergent ( non-scented ). Many people in this community claim it works BUT I have not tested it. I think you would need a chemist-ish background to really know how it breaks down.... and that is a little out of my league ha ha ha 😂
The Soho link is good BUT it is currently sold out right now on amazon ( so it might be trying to show you alternatives ) I fixed the easel link - Thanks for catching that 🔥
Hullo, I don’t believe that the Bob Ross corporation is evil but the people that cheated Bob and his family are truly dishonest and I will never support them! I have recommended the special on Netflix and other venues for more information. Thank you for sharing your oil painting alternatives!
Really? Numbers in triangle tells us the quality of the plastic? I thought it represent the type of plastics in which we can or cannot recycle depending of our nearest recycling plant as mentioned in our local flyers.
you are 100% right... they are called RICs I think. But when you look up those numbers on a chart it will also tell you what the plastic can withstand before it breakdown.
Thanks a lot of being so franc without making extra money from Bob Ross company which he is not alive anyway and profit only to these two business people on name of Bob Ross! 😊
far better to ONLY buy the alternatives so that you are NOT giving support to the greedy VULTURES who have been exploiting lovely Bob Ross for decades. Rest in peace Bob Ross.
When you buy Bob Ross that money goes to the corrupt family that took away all of his paintings and memories from Bob Ross family including his future earning

That a fun and great idea - Thanks for sharing 🔥

I have never tried those brushes before - So I can't give me input on them. Best advice I can give is see where they are sold and look at the reviews.
Hi, Wild! Loved your video, as always! great video Thank you! I am in the Netherlands and get my thinner at the local dollar(euro store) € 1.99 per liter. I was glad to discover that.

You're welcome
You should definitely make your own brushes!! 😊
I would love to - Just gotta figure out where to start :)
Yes make your own brand brushes!
If I can keep growing my brand and channel I will 🔥🔥🔥
Definitely ❤
Glad you like the video
Great video very informative! I like the idea of you selling your own brushes, but I hope you market them as being made from your own hair! 🤣
OOooOOOoo great idea.... the ladies will go crazy for them ha ha ha
Hullo, I don’t believe that the Bob Ross corporation is evil but the people that cheated Bob and his family are truly dishonest and I will never support them! I have recommended the special on Netflix and other venues for more information. Thank you for sharing your oil painting alternatives!
Glad I could show you everything you need to do wet on wet painting 🔥
@@WildCreates interesting 😁
I will buy your brushes as long as you paint me like one of your French girls
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣... you're sick, in a good way bruv😂😂😂
I 110% will.... I have no shame ha ha ha
Lol
I've purchased the Wilson Bickford brushes from Jerry's artarama and they work ok, shed alot but not too bad
You might be past this stage already - BUT I give a tip on brushes that shed in this video here: ruclips.net/video/axivJ6sCGCQ/видео.html

Ha ha ha - Better late than never 😂😂😂
@@WildCreates Alexander Art is a good substitute.
Thanks a lot of being so franc without making extra money from Bob Ross company which he is not alive anyway and profit only to these two business people on name of Bob Ross! 😊
Glad to help you out. We will call it even by you smashing that SUB button 🔥
martin f weber
Good stuff 💪
far better to ONLY buy the alternatives so that you are NOT giving support to the greedy VULTURES who have been exploiting lovely Bob Ross for decades. Rest in peace Bob Ross.
This video was made for you 🔥
When you buy Bob Ross that money goes to the corrupt family that took away all of his paintings and memories from Bob Ross family including his future earning
Kevin Hill is a much better painter than Bob Ross and his brushes are excellent.
They are both excellent painters.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video. Super informative. I would be interested in buying your brushes if you developed a line.
If I can keep growing - I will see what I can do to make my own line 💪
Thank you
