The problem with Minecraft's music...

  • In this video, I break down why I think the Minecraft soundtrack could be improved by adding adaptive music features to the game. The Minecraft Music has always been really dear to my heart as I have a lot of childhood memories with Minecraft, and subsequently the music; however, I think every game can be improved, and adapting the music to specific scenarios would really bolster the mood and overall experience.

It was originally intended to for the Minecraft music to be adaptive, but they didn't do it because they say that, since the game is a sandbox more than anything, any situation could last just a few seconds (ex. combat) and the thus the mood would change very often. If the soundtrack needed to change every few seconds it wouldn't be good. So they settled to this type of non-adaptive music because it is kinda generic and can fit with many situations.
Edit: For example you could be building, then attend to your crops, fight a few mobs and pet your dog, all within 2 minutes. The music couldn't change for each situation. Adaptive music might have worked, but they decided against it, so it probably wouldn't.
Second edit: It's been 5 months since I've made this comment and in this time many people have responded to it. I always read what you say to me and I have to say... I think adaptive music could be implemented, but I think it's quite unlikely that we will be hearing it any time soon. At least we have mods!

When I play Minecraft single player, I just chill out, no matter what I’m doing. I love the nostalgic, depressing feeling I get when the music slowly fades in. Adaptive music would interrupt this and honestly ruin that experience. In short, because of the way music is implemented in Minecraft, the game feels liminal. And I love it.

I can see your point with this and it is valid but I think c418 had adaptive music in mind. For example I don't think it would be good if we had fighting music everytime you fought a mob or music that changes so the mood is wildly different all the time for each different activity you have to do in the game. I think the soundtrack doesn't opt in for playing perfectly in every situation but I think the music perfectly encapsulates the overall mood of the game. I don't find it annoying when a calming song plays at night or in a cave system I think it works pretty well with the atmosphere and mood the game was meant to create. Again I do think there are some valid points in this video a bit more of music selection for an area would be good but for the most part I think all the music fits really well with the game.

If Mojang wanted adaptive music they could have gone with a transition like pikmin's boss music has with faster and louder notes and C418 audibly hitting the keys a bit harder, then it slows back down again and fades away, and it could be different for every type of mob like surface mobs, end mobs (enderman and endermite) and nether mobs (wither skeletons, ghasts, blazes, etc) and the two bosses and the warden (the warden would have 2 different types of music with each of them being a faster more worrying song, the quickest for being when it attacks you or knows where you are (or hears you) and the other is when it's searching for you)

A spanish youtuber by the name of Jaime Altozano made a video about minecraft's music, and why not being adaptative is so powerful.
It can't play "home music" when you arrive at home because how can the game know what "home" is for every single player, having wooden planks? no, what if you build a house out of concrete and quartz? being surrounded by blocks? no, what if you're just in a cave, or your house has a balcony, or you're in the garden, or it doesn't even have walls at all. Every player's experience in Minecraft is different and adaptativity won't accommodate every player. It is random, and most people (apparently not TheStellarJay tho lol) forget the times when it doesn't fit the mood, but when it does, it makes it very memorable.
However, the Nether and Bosses should absolutely have their own music, and like you said, the nether's fits it very well, but there's no excuse why the Ender Dragon and the Wither have no music or disappointing boss music, Mojang should do something about it, and make the dragon fight harder

Someone else already made the argument for villages.
So I’ll argue for mobs/fight/battle music. It might be easy or intuitive to add fight music when there’s hostile mobs around you, but what about mob grinders or farms? AFK’ing in one is not exactly challenging and you’re not fighting directly, so if there’s enemy music starting and stopping for hours on end it will get annoying, or what if you have hostile mobs as pets like Sandiction? Music will play constantly in your base.

I'm 2 years late, but I absolutely agree. I have played the game for over 12 years. 10 of those have been with music set to off. But it does also make the game feel a bit "eh" after some time. So given how I've also been composing music for the past 9 years, I decided about 1½ year ago to start doing exactly what you're missing about the game, right here. Making literal adaptive music, but make it fit to the game. Which is easier said than done. So far I've got 5 concepts, but the goal is to make themes for every single biome in every single dimension, themes for every single mob, themes for all the different villager trades and town types, different boss themes, different player base themes, general music, etc. I've got a looong way to go, but I believe it would make the game a heck of a lot cooler, if there were different biome themes that got played in each biome and which were added onto by different mob themes that just play together as one huge, ever changing piece. If that were the case, Minecraft music would be on by default.

lets say there are 4 mood types..
    Combat
    Mining
    Exploring
    Vibing
These sliders will all tick upwards or down by doing various tasks and will play music accordingly.
So lets say you're mining alot of ores and exploring caves. The Mining and Exploration mood sliders would be ticking up, when one of those reaches 100 it plays some of the soundtrack perfect for the moment.
THEN you get ambushed by spiders and zombies, the Combat slider will rapidly tick up, and the Exploration & Mining would tick down, and start playing battle music.

the music does actually have some level of adaptation in it. different tracks play depending on what biome you’re in, for example there’s specific ocean music, cave music, nether music, mountain music, etc. i think it works quite nicely because it’s so subtle. your brain subconsciously begins to connect certain soundtracks to certain areas as you play, for example i will always associate lena raine’s “left to bloom” with the meadow biome because it always plays when you’re in that biome during the day, and I once built a house there. i don’t think minecraft needs combat music or anything like that, because truthfully combat encounters happen spontaneously and usually last a very short amount of time. maybe for like woodland mansions and wither fights, but the end, nether, and oceans all have unique soundtracks already.

    • @SashaMasonVR
      @SashaMasonVR Год назад +1

For a very long time though, this hasn't been a thing though, and most of your time isn't spent in the ocean. Up until the Caves and Cliffs updates were happening, there wasn't any overworld music specific to biomes. And even then, it's still fairly random, though there are tracks that play specifically in the deep dark and it fits a lot better than the standard music, but for me, the random music together with the complete absence of any ambient sounds (besides the random cave noises), it makes for a very quiet game.
The Nether somehow is the complete opposite though, with each biome having its own soundscape and soundtracks.
Combat music, eh depends. Terraria gets away with not having any combat music for normal enemies either, but it does have specific music for each biome, whether you're underground or not, different day time night time music, music for when it is raining, like there is a lot of potential for adaptive music within Minecraft, but it would be very difficult to completely redo the entire soundtrack at this point because nostalgia and stuff and people wouldn't approve of the change.
But you could totally still have combat music for The Wither, or raids. Not having raid music is a missed opportunity really.

just check minecraft wiki music page, there are special triggers adjusting when which music track can play.
though yes, very long ago music did indeed play randomly, but that was changed a long long time ago.

While your point is respectable and very well could increase the enjoyment factor for a lot of players as the music matches their emotions more accurately, I will offer a point in defense of Minecraft's choice of music presentation. Minecraft has been a big part of my childhood and still overtakes me now as an adult. But as I play it now with a better understanding of my priorities and what I play the game for, hearing a calming tune in the midst of tense situations is there to remind me "hey! I know this feels stressful, but you're playing this game as an escape, so let it feel that way". Even when I'm panicked and overrun by mobs, Wet Sand is there to reassure me that I am still the author of this world, and even under pressure I can relish in my getaway experience.
I dunno. Something of an alternate perspective to chew on. I definitely didn't feel this way growing up, so it may well be something I've grown into because of nostalgia or maturity or a bit of both.

I think there is one more track that is "Adaptive" and it's when you are in the Deep Dark biome. I say it's "Adaptive" because I feel like a good example of adaptive music is Portal 2's, where the things you do in-game effect the soundtrack like running on gel or flying on a faithplate, instead of just "Going to desert" and "Going underground" like Terraria.
I feel like if Mojang keeps most of the C418 tracks for classic surface biomes like the plains, forest, desert, rivers, etc, and have some of the 1.13 music play when the player is in the ocean, and 1.18-19 for Mountains, then it'd make sense. Add new "mining / fighting" tracks for underground use, get ConcernedApe to make them or something since he did it in his game, with around 2-3 different tracks for each "underground biome" between levels 1 and 30 (Regular), 31 to around 70 (Ice), 71 to 120 (Fire) and a few more for the other mines you can find throughout the game.
Essentially, make each biome have it's own "Lootpool" of music, when the time for a track would kick in, look at which location the player is in then pick a music track from the lootpool according to which location the player is in. Keep the same track playing unless if they are transitioning between underground and surface, in which case either do a fade-out and fade-in another track, or just fade-out and stop the music entirely. They could even do the fading effect with the music as the player is going through a nether portal. Maybe certain tracks can play during certain actions like if they player fishes for more than 7 seconds, play music, if they stop for more than 7 seconds, slowly stop.

The reason i play with music off is that whenever the music starts playing i will get nostalgic flashbacks and start thinking of all the nice memories of my childhood and all the great times i will never get to experience again.

I understand and agree that adaptive music is good, but Minecraft not having it isnt a problem for me. It's kinda charming and iconic. Also, it's actually false, they do have some adaptive music, especially nowadays, that being music for specific biomes, dimensions or structures

The fact that the music isn't adaptive makes it so great. It's random like the world itself.

There was this one time where I was lost in the nether with my brother and the song at 6:38 played. It fit the mood so well that I still remember to this day. (This happened several years ago)

The few biome related songs are amazing (nether, water), but the random song with no music in between is what makes it special, you could be doing anything and suddenly it kicks in. Instant nostalgia.

    Insanely Hot Take:
I think that the music is one of the best parts of the game. Whether your building, caving or doing anything it just plays sometimes and really adds more atmosphere. I think that the fact that it is not adaptive fits real well with the randomness of minecraft. Having everything dependant on let’s say: the biome, would not really fit in well in minecraft. And finally, minecraft with no music feels, Empty.
One suggestion I would really like tho is that music would be rarer at night or in a cave, and just have a little ambience. Another thing that would be cool is if the music fades out in a boss fight

I'm late to the party, but my issue with Minecraft's music system ever since I stopped playing 1.13 on the Xbox 360 is that the game just straight up doesn't play music almost at all. I just leave it off so that it doesn't randomly interrupt my own music once every two hours. Java Edition is great but hot damn do they never seem to play music for me anymore.
I also find it funny that you mentioned the Warden, and yet this video came out *two years ago.* We just got that shit a few months ago.

I think part of Minecraft popularity is the ever-present calming music. You shouldn't feel stressed or scared playing Minecraft, it should make you relaxed. You associate Minecraft with soft, comfy feeling thanks to the music.
