So very helpful. Really appreciate you taking the time to put this together. This helped me to successfully replace the motor, and I'm no handy man by far!
Thanks for this video. My model 9550 (nearly identical) was running in circles. One side wheels were not being powered. I took the unit apart after watching this. Turned out, one of the wheel motors had separated from it's (normally) attached grey gear box. I opened the gear box to find the 2 screws that hold it to the motor had simply backed out. I put them back, attaching the gear box to the wheel motor, reassembled everything (after a careful cleaning and greasing) and i am back in business.
Thanks for the kind words Patrick! Funny thing is, I had that exact thing happen to me awhile back....I just didn't make a video for it....I thought it was too unique of an issue but I guess not!

Thanks for instructions, have the P955 I had a Er 10 Leslies wanted 1200 to fix it.. we had just got a motor in Oct 22 for 500 dollars and Leslies put it in... 5 months later Error 10!! this time I was determined to repair it myself. turned out to be the swivel was full of water.. First I used RTV Silicon to reseal the Motor compartment just in case there was water in it, .. there was a tiny bit of condensation in it.. Also put the two ends of the wire together using solder shrink wrap individual wires, then RTV Silicon after it dried I shrink wrapped the repaired wire. I used the two ends of the Swivel to tighten on the wire.. put the smaller end in the larger and put 3 screws in the plastic about 1/4" from end to hold them together and keep pressure off of the repaired wire where I did my work after removing the swivel. its working Fine.. Im giving it 2 days to be sure the motor compartment RTV is dry. Im going to get a Dolphin Triton PS WiFi and keep the Polaris for back up...
@stv4icp that's a great question Stv4icp. The short answer is "yes", just one side can be replaced.... the wire that extends from the wheel motor, to the little motherboard, is push-on... and therefore can be swapped out if needed. The problem is.... finding a replacement wheel motor. Polaris does not sell internal replacement parts for the motor block; my suggestion is to find someone parting their robot out on eBay or similar.
@Mark the Host yes sir I have the motor out now and see it's gonna be a problem to find. I used on ebay for $129. We NO GUARANTEE ! That's risky. Thanks for your help and reply bud. Also great video !

those packets contain silica beads. if they've been sitting out in atmosphere for any length of time they are likely saturated with all the moisture they can hold anyway. in no better shape than the moist ones from the cleaner. any of those you can bake at 150f for a few hours (i use a turkey roaster). you can do that a few dozen times before the beads become unrecoverable. take them immediately out of the oven and let them cool just enough to not melt plastic and assemble the machine before they can become saturated again.
Hi Shaun, and thanks for dropping a line! Yes in my case it did stop the water intrusion... and I use my robot about once a week since the production of this video. Have a good one!
Hi Mark. I just got one of these and have a quick question. Do the wheels turn when the unit is not in the pool? I’m trying to test it to make sure everything works but when I press start, the propeller motor runs for a few seconds then stops for 10 seconds, then runs for a few seconds again. Is this normal behavior when the unit is not in water? Thanks
Great Video , any idea how to make it water proof the motor T section , the white cogs on the left and right drive motors could you add grease or something !
Much appreciated! That's a great question. First, make sure the existing gaskets are clean and no splitting and not brittle. This includes the two o-ring gaskets for the motors (that have the white cogs on them). Then coat all the gaskets liberally with pool&spa lube. Be sure the cover is fully tightened, but only tighten by hand and be very careful not to overtighten. Hope this helps!
Excellent video! Do you know how can I determine the model number of this unit? I was given one, with all new parts, including new motor and housing (I just need to do the repair) and all I see is that it is a Polaris VRX-IQ+. I probably don’t NEED it, but it would be good to have.
Thanks for the kind words David! That VRX IQ+ is different and I can't pretend to know anything about it, although I'm sure there's similarities. I wish I could be of more help.... please keep me posted on what you find!

Great video Mark! I followed the process but I’ve been getting the same error code. The seals look good. I used the marine gel as suggested. I’ve taken this puppy apart three times with the same result... water is seeping into the unit somehow. Any suggestions. Thanks again for your videos! Gilles
Much appreciated Gilles! Hmm, I can empathize and know that can be frustrating. I'd scrutinize the entire housing for any hairline cracks or fractures.... eliminate that possibility first. If you find any, get back to me and I can suggest easy ways to repair. If no cracks, thoroughly but carefully check the gasket for any cracks, splits, or (and this is where many might not think of it) oxidation. Check for oxidation by lubing it up, and gently feeling every inch of the gasket for "roughness". If you find any, I've found that gently using your nail to scratch it off (very very gently) actually works quite well (make sure the nail you use is not rough.... use an emory board on your nail first if you have to lol). If you've exhausted those two options, get back to me and we'll explore some other things 👍
I have followed your suggestions. I think that water is getting in through one of the gears leading to one of the wheels. The gear .seems to be separated from the gearbox . Will I need to get a new part? Thanks again for your guidance! It is much appreciated👍
@@gillesjpfontaine You should see an O-ring gasket at both of the two holes for the wheel gears, check those thoroughly to ensure they're intact, and lube those as well. Send a pic to 210-264-2648 and we'll go from there 👍
Mark, my 965 is throwing no codes but only one side of the unit’s wheels and cleaning brush is working. But yet when I turn it upside down and rotate the non working wheels both of that side’s wheels rotate along with cleaner brush making me assume it’s not a drive gear issue. I did have a new cable installed last summer by the pool store where I bought the unit and it did just fine the rest of the summer and about twice this season before the malfunction. Any ideas? Thank you!
Thanks for the message, Michael.... sorry you're having problems. I must say it's very odd that you're not getting any error codes. While in the water, try putting it in manual steer mode to see if you notice any different behavior with the wheels. Assuming no difference, and since you already manually moved the wheels to ensure the gearing feels normal and engaged, then unfortunately disassembly is the next step imo. First take mental note of which side does not work. Once disassembled, and assuming everything appears visibly ok, then disassemble the individual motors and switch them out (left goes to the right side, and vice versa). Reassemble and reattempt operation. If the opposite set of wheels now do not work, it means there's an issue with the motor itself and should be replaced. If the original side is still the bad side, it most likely means a problem with the circuit board itself, which unfortunately means an entire motor block replacement. Keep us posted on what you discover.
Hi , great info. I repaired the motor board on this unit after some corrosion and then sprayed lanolin (wool fat) as a moisture repellent with success. I 'm having an issue when bench testing an Error code 08 - 'Cleaner is turned on and running out of water '. I was wondering if you or fellow subscribers know what the mechanism is at play to trigger this code. I thought the swiveling connector on the cable might have had a sensor but placing it in a bucket of water disproved that idea. I want to bypass this code 08 for further bench testing before sealing the motor housing.
Hi Bjorn, and thanks for that valuable feedback! Yes I've also wondered what mechanism senses for water, so any input from viewers is greatly appreciated!
@@MarktheHost There is no water sensor. The load on the pump motor in water is greater, and as consequence an increase in current (amps) which the motor control board senses. The manufacturer have the own diagnostic 'box' which by-passes this mechanism when testing. I assume that both wheel/brush motors have similar mechanisms have the same feed-back, measuring the amperage to remain in certain range otherwise an Error code 02/03 (right/left motor) is displayed.
My advice would be to scour OfferUp and eBay for folks selling theirs. Find someone that lists it as not working, there's a good chance the specific part you need is fully functional.
UPDATE: Mark your idea of switching motors was a very good one because now the opposite side wheels and brush do not drive. Looks like I have a bad motor. Do you know if these motors are sold separately and where I might find one? Thanks for your help. If I can find a motor that will save me from having to buy a new pool cleaner.

Hello, Mark. I didn't have a motor code, but one side of my unit was not turning. It turns out that when I disassembled the gear train assembly (the gray box attached to the motor), the gear farthest away from the motor (the one closest to you when you open the gray box) is stripped. This gear is actually a double gear and the larger of the two gears is stripped. Any idea where this gear (same one as in your video) can be sourced? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, Polaris does not make it easy to find parts like this. My best advice would be to find someone selling theirs for parts. Ebay has been a useful site for me.
@@MarktheHost I found a motor with the gear box assembly on ebay for about $100. Are the left side and right side motors "side specific" or does it not matter which side the motor gets reinstalled on?
@@MarktheHost Well I may be crazy, but after assembling the robot and deploying it into the pool, I think the robot is running in reverse when it thinks its going forward and vice versa. Any suggestions or just assume it's possessed?!
@@digdoug9678 Well isn't that funny!?! Haven't heard of that one before. To confirm, switch it to manual mode using your phone app (assuming you use that) and have it drive forward, then reverse, turn left, then right. The motors really should be installable on either side, you just need to make sure to connect the correct wire from the circuit board to the correct side motor. If it is confirmed reverse, try switching the cords for the motors.
Hi Lee, and thanks for the kind words! That's a great question, and I'll assume you're referring to the entire black 'motor block' that encases the two wheel motors and propeller motor. Simply search for "Polaris Motor Block R0638100" and you'll find several choices...but be prepared to pay around $500 after shipping; yikes! Unfortunately, and I've tried, you cannot find anywhere that will sell internal components of the motor block....(retail at least). Good luck!
Hi Mike; so sorry I missed this message. Yes I've run across a few situations (including with my brother-in-law's P9550) where the controller unit just completely powered down with no response. Unfortunately I have no fix for this.... and it does sound like some sort of internal fuse that is tripping.
No I haven't found the nuts yet..I have been to so many places..even online at nut and bolt suppliers..it's such a weird size..once again if you come by a parts machine I will buy them.
Go ahead and email me via marknjess08@yahoo.com, with the exact pictures of what you're looking at, and parts you need. No promises BUT I might be able to assist here. Be sure to include your RUclips ID so I can reference this message; thanks!
Appreciate your video. Do you have any tips for an error 01? I had an error 10. Followed your video for that and it ran 3 times and now I’m getting the error 01. I’m so frustrated! I replaced the “floating cable plug” think my pins were loose, but still no luck. It’s only 2 years old.
@@rhondamurphy9565 Hi Rhonda, and apologies on the delayed response! Ok so you previously had an error '10', and when you say you followed my steps, I'll assume you followed the steps from my OTHER video on this, as the video where you're commenting now does not address the error 10. Since you're now getting the error code ('01'), did you ever disassembledthe black motor block per my instructions in this video? Meaning, did you take all the screws out to reveal the circuit board and 3 motors and wiring? If so, then there's a chance that your reassembly may not be watertight, and water has been introduced into the motor block. Only way to know is to disassemble the motor block again, and look for any signs of water damage. Also take a peek at the circuit board (both sides...easy to remove but just ask if you need help), and look all over for any signs of a short. If you see a short on this circuit board...then the entire motor block needs replacing, as I have not been able to find internal replacement parts for this motor block. Also check the two gears for the wheels that's also located in this motor block. Several other things it could be...let me know your results!
Hi again, very sorry but I don't have parts for this. Unless you're looking for the entire motor block which is very expensive...which can be obtained through multiple channels.
I followed your video and was able to remove the motor block of my Polaris 9450 sport which looks very similar. And too I found water exactly like you. Now can you tell us if it worked once you put it in the pool? I need to know if it works or if I need to purchase a new motor block. They are very expensive and I don’t live in the US anymore so the shipping and taxes will be pretty high too. Please tell me if it works once you dried everything and reassembled everything. I have err 03 (left wheel motor short circuit very similar to your code).
Thank you Zaza2260 for your message. Yes in my case it did work once I dried everything out and correctly reassembled. But I've also taken one apart where the little circuit board inside was visibly fried, so that one did not work. Please understand that there are no guarantees with my suggestions, but they do increase your chances of avoiding expensive repairs. Yes sir these are very expensive. I wish you luck and do keep us posted on your progress!
Thank you very much. May I ask you what product you used to lubricate the gaskets? I didn’t catch that. And is there any others grease or oil I could use in case I cannot find that one here? .....BTW i am a woman! And your video is so well done that I had no problems to disassemble my robot to the exception of unscrewing the 2 washers for the 2 wheels motors. It’s too tight. Waiting for someone to help me eventually.
@@zaza2260 @zaza2260 OH, very sorry about that ma'am; I didn't mean to assume! Just Google "pool & spa lube" and use any of those that pull up in the search results. That product can be used for all gaskets relating to your pool filter equipment as well, so it's something every pool owner should have. As for the two nuts that attach your two wheel motors to the housing, the best tool to use are called channel pliers, also called groove pliers. They're quite common; you should be able to find a nearby neighbor or family member that has those. Thanks for the compliments!
It works! So happy! I went 1 step further by removing the card which has some little corrosion points and brushed those with a toothbrush and a bit of paint thinner as it has caterpillar properties so it can remove the moisture. @@zaza2260 Yay! So glad it worked out for you, and thanks for the tip about using paint thinner. There are sprays designed for cleaning electronics, but paint thinner is a more common item found in homes so I'll be sure to pass that along 👍
The fault came by way of the two small thin nuts which hold drive motors in place..both were broken in half and had fallen off..corrosion due to salt water..I figure..

@@digdoug9678 Great! No sir they're not side-specific. Keep us posted!
Great video thanks. But do you know where I can purchase just the drive motors?? Tia
Good luck!
Have you ever taken apart the cable going into the unit
Hello Domenic, no I sure haven't.
My Polaris pool cleaner starts and shuts down! Power supply shows 10.7 volts at the output side of the controller. Do I have a bad controller?
Hi Mike; so sorry I missed this message. Yes I've run across a few situations (including with my brother-in-law's P9550) where the controller unit just completely powered down with no response. Unfortunately I have no fix for this.... and it does sound like some sort of internal fuse that is tripping.
Did that fix the error 2 issue?
Hello; this video wasn't made to fix an Error 2.... which my robot never had. Sorry
By the way… when I start the cleaner, it will run for about 20-30 seconds and then the error code 01 pops up and it stops.
Did that fixed the error 2?
Hi Kimo, yes sir it did! I use the robot weekly for two different pools...
Any chance you know where to buy the larger gasket for the motor housing? I cannot seem to find one online.
That's a great question, but unfortunately I don't have a lead on that. Hopefully another viewer has some insight for both of us...
If it's of any help to ya now I donno, but get some gasket maker from an autoparts store, and make your own gasket.
Hi there..looking for pcb for 965iq..water got to mine.now one drive motors does not work..
Hi again, very sorry but I don't have parts for this. Unless you're looking for the entire motor block which is very expensive...which can be obtained through multiple channels.
Bench tested all motors and all work independent of the board but when hooked up one small motor doesn't work then I get error 10 on control unit.
Any new updates on this?
(Tip from a friend specialized in electronic).
Thank you so much for your very well done video!
Hi Gremlingirl, and thanks for that info! So now that you discovered the fault, did you get the nuts replaced and the robot working?
@@MarktheHost not yet..still trying to find the resistor..do you have parts for sale..or know where to find some..polaris only wants you to buy a new machine..not fix them.
@@gremlingirl101 yep that sounds about right. I've tried myself.... getting replacement parts... it's very difficult finding small components; they only sell the bulk manifold and that's at hundreds of dollars. Best to look on sites like eBay for folks selling non-working units... and hope you can find the parts you need that way 👍
@@MarktheHost if you ever find a supplier keep me in mind..thanks..cheers.
I have a Polaris P965IQ. It seems I need a new circuit board for the motor assembly. Anyone have leads on getting one? Thank you.
My advice would be to scour OfferUp and eBay for folks selling theirs. Find someone that lists it as not working, there's a good chance the specific part you need is fully functional.
