This week sees Chris and Becca tackle some creative building challenges onboard their (not so trusty) houseboat the 'Whistling Wombat'! Becca channels her inner Neil Buchanan (Art attack) in an attempt to teach Chris how to create some clever extra storage containers for less than £10 using mostly recycled materials, for their never ending kitchen transformation! Storage is key after all when living on a narrowboat!

Keep safe warm dry and virus free both.
Arrgh I did mention pipe work before laying on the kitchen floor ! !
The only way round it now is to tuck them under the gun-whale.
I have always always believed that the pipe work should NOT be chucked on the floor of a boat but fitted under the Gun-whale for access and use pumps that can suck up rather than push water under pressure.

With your heating and copper pipes behind wood panels .... Even if you do a Pressure-Test when all connected, you might well spring a leak after a while because good old DIYers used to like to use steel nails/screws to hold pipes in place without any lagging to protect them ... They rust and wear through in time causing catastrophe that you can't find the source of (Had this in a house built in the 60's 😒) .... As your boat is fairly old and you don't know WHO fitted the heating, unless you can access/see all of the pipework, it would be safer to 'renew' it all .... Just a thought 🙂

If you intend to cruise, then you could use the engine heat to heat the radiators. Obviously only works when cruising, but will keep boat warm all day, hence you need less heat in the evening. You need a heat exchanger with your engine skin tank circuit. You can use the Alde circulation pump to circulate the water. It is amazing how much heat can be harvested. Gas boilers are very expensive to run, switch to a Webasto. You can reuse a thermo top V from a jaguar with the oval webasto controller, however does require a bit of DIY.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад

we wanted to do that but were told we probably couldn't?? though it was just from 1 source , it would be great to heat it from the engine, we have heard they are expensive to run...some have said a bottle a week which could add up if were not careful , a webasto was also something we wanted to read into a bit more, thanks so much

If you are going to use gas, you need to buy a bottle refill adaptor from Amazon that allows you to fill a gas bottle at a petrol station with LPG (low pressure gas). It will more than halve your gas costs ( Calor very expensive at present). You will need to train Chris how to do it without blowing himself up Bex. I think your plan to use existing is best, you can always spruce up your boiler cover with rattle can spray paint. 😁. Keep going kids.

I ended up in 6 years replacing the thermocouple(£6 new) once and the tiny spinny bit at the top twice that was all . And mine was 20 years old when I got it ! To avoid having to go under the floor again, why not put the water pipes to the radiators either just above the floorboards or underneath the gunnels? That way any couplings that might leak are easily accessable and you get the heat from the pipes as well as from the radiators.

So, so, so impressed with the boxes Beccs, I’m going to make sure Henri sees them as he makes pallet furniture, mainly tables though. We have a diesel heater in the van and had one in the motorhome, we also had a gas one once in a British van we had (here in Oz). Both were great for heating the space, though a lot smaller than the Whispering Wombat. The diesel used such a small amount of fuel compared to the gas, neither we left on for extended periods as it got to hot when in bed. Just our experience and reality it’s your decision good luck with it and whatever you use you’ll do a great job. Take care guys and stay warm. 💕

Hi just thought I might say myself and lots of other people told you not to have any pipework under the floor and here we are your pipes are under the floor and you need to get to them. For your heating and hot water I personally would go with a instant hot water boiler and for heating you already have your solid fuel stove at the front so just fit a diesel hot air heater at the back this is more then enough and you don't need a clarifier or rads with loads of pipes all this can be purchased off eBay for a couple of hundred quid less the a clarifier on its own

All details is coming to their place bit by bit. Soon you are two skilled DIY:ers.
But at the start of this video (and maybe some others to) you say "our first" narrowboat.
Are you intended to buy another one? If, so, are you trying to get one with a huge amount of rust?
I don't whant to miss that!

Take the veggies out of plastic before storing them. The warm kitchen isn't the best place for veg storage though. Best in protected cool place. Outside protected from rain I mean.

That's a good idea thanks Jimmy. Why they come wrapped in so much plastic anyway but don't get me started on that! Don't worry, our kitchen is always freezing cos of the lack of heating at the moment but will definitely remember that for the future ☺️

Guys, I fitted a webasto and rads on my boat. Got the webasto from a really good seller on ebay. Pm me if you want the details. Then you can do it as a pressurised system, much better. Not keen on old pipework under floors and behind walls, run new!

thanks were currently just running through options, the Sebastopol may be a tad out of our price range thats the only problem, no its probably best to keep the pipe work somewhere with easy access

Run 100mph in the opposite direction from the adle boiler, even using it conservatively you’ll be getting through a bottle of gas every four to five days. A diesel heater is the most cost effective way of warming your boat other than a log burner and foraging for free wood. I’ve had a stove an alde boiler and a diesel heater and I promise you WILL regret going with the boiler.the other thing with the Aldi boilers is they rot from the inside out you’ll be lucky if you get it past the bsc exam . The pumps for them are ridiculously expensive, avoid AVOID Arrrrggghhhhvoid!!!!! Lol

The storage boxes are an excellent idea. Much better than that made-in-China plastic crap that disintegrates in a couple of months but continues to pollute the planet for ever. I personally don't mind the smell of onions, and though I'm not arachnophobic, I suspect the little eight-leggers would not like that fragrance.
Certainly appropriate to sign off with a reference to Dudes and Dudettes, being the 25th anniversary ofthe release of The Big Lebowsky. All you need is a nice carpet to tie the narrowboat together.
