    In todays episode we see Chris and Becks struggle with the reality that living on a narrowboat isn't always everything its cracked up to be - or at least whilst knee deep into restoring their "Whistling Wombat" houseboat to her former glory.
    Will they ever get to go cruising the canals and rivers?
    Nonetheless, they battle on with their DIY - the extreme weather making things even trickier, and are rewarded for their efforts by some generous tokens of help gifted to them from a lovely subscriber.

    Oh boy 20 months in, you guys are amazing, Beccs you can solve any problem. There’s two new kids on the block Josh and Ula, they’ve just brought a boat and left us with a Christie Crobot cliffhanger, they have a big water leak, they found it in episode 6. Sadly they don’t have a Becca and Chris. Phillip you are a gem, hatch is now complete and looks brilliant. Did you get caught in the amber alert weather condition? OK guys as usual I wait with baited breath for the boiler outcome, but Beccs I have faith I know you’ll get it going. Take care guys, I’m so, so loving your “adventure”. See you soon. 💕

    Guys, I don't know if this will catch the issue in time. One solution is to run the pipes above the floor at the side of the boat and then cover the pipes with a makeshift skirting board. It is basically not a good idea to have those pipes under the floor. As in the future a leak appears from a joint or pipe, it will be a nightmare to lift the floor again. If it is done as I described above, then any maintenance or leaks can be easily got at.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад +2

      we would love to run the pipes above, but I suppose we were trying to avoid another big job, that way you could easily keep an eye on it all, and you can make it look really nice too, thanks Ken

    With your tricky screw removal or, if you happen to mangle a screw head, you should get some screw removal drill bits. These drill into the damaged screw head, and you can then use them to screw out the damaged screw. A useful tool, I am forever damaging screw heads especially when using power tools as a screwdriver. I got a handy set for less than a tenner.

    It might be a bit late now …. But to fix the ugly square hole in the side panel ( where you cut out the screw). You could use your big hole cutter ( that you used for the pipes ) . If you fix a piece of timber behind the panel where the square hole is. You can use that to position the centre drill and then cut a nice round hole in the panel. Then use the cutter again to cut a round filler piece from a scrap of timber . Well done with fixing the water leaks ! 😊

    Yes I don't know about Britain but in Canada we use pellet stoves. The pellets are made from compressed sawdust. You but them in 50lb bags and fill the feeder tray on the stove and the gears turn and slowly feed the fire with pellets. They burn very hot and it acts like a furnace. You dump a bag into the feeder tray and it burns for days and days without having to put wood on or anything. It becomes self coefficient and because it's an airtight you can almost come the flue and it's very long burning.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot

Becca, is there anything you can't put your hands too. You plan everything out and you make the current job in question happen. You and Chris are both amazing with the skill-sets you both have. Becca loving your pluming skills and wood cutting too. How kind was Philip to make you the edging of the hatch window frame. What an amazing job he did. Those wooden blocks he gave you, looked great and did the job. I was on the edge of my seat, when Chris was trying to retrieve that piece of wood from the water. Without see the full layout of your water system it looks like you have installed the non return valve on the wrong side of the accumulator tank. Also as a preventaive measure install the accumulator vertically (pointing downwards) with an inline isolator so you dont have to drain anything if it ever needs replacing.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад

      Oh cool thanks for your thoughts ☺️ The accumulator tank actually has a non return valve on each side now! Each going in the correct direction ofcourse! 😂 To be honest I only really replaced the leaky plastic fitting with that second non return valve because I had it to hand and thought if was wrong I could change it at a later date. I wasn't really sure if it would matter using one of them but obviously I have no plumbing knowledge so just went with what I thought seemed ok. It's been working fine since thankfully!
      The only trouble is we have the inner cupboard base which would prevent us from being able to have the tank sat vertically. The isolator sounds like a good idea though. At the risk of sounding particularly daft theres an isolator just before the water pump from the water tank, so would that suffice or do you think we would need another one?

You could also put it in a crobot hand book along with all of the manuals and user guides for everything on the boat so if anything goes wrong in future you have all the information in one place. Another blog another friendly warning. You’re opening potentially a huge can of worms. Do yourself a favour rip out that old pipework and replace it. You have no idea of when it was ripped out whether it was split etc, whether the boiler had been condemned etc , you could spend hundreds getting new rads in place , recommissioning you boiler only to find the boilers unfit for purpose and your bilges full of water from old split pipework.
    I’m not being a harbinger of doom but you’re only going to check for the safe operation of the boiler and hopefully dry bilges after you’ve spent hundreds and all of your time trying to sort a system that you have no history of.
    That said I commend your enthusiasm.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад

      the boiler was actually fine and has been working, its a small worry if it would pass its BSS in November as someone had said they can rust from the inside, the pipe work on the other hand had been disconnected, your not wrong about putting in new pipework..that way at least will know its all good to go. if we can do it cheaply its possibly worth a shot..but yes it would be heart breaking to spend a ton and then realise we have to put a whole new system in...god can you think of the footage haha thanks so much for your advice

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад

      Thanks so much for this. It's something we have been thinking about more increasingly. It's so hard when you don't have a full history like you say, but further complicated when there is your budget to think about too and what we are able to afford. I'm thinking more and more though that new pipework above the flooring is going to be the best solution. We do know that the boiler functions pretty well, atleast for warming the water as this was working fine when we bought the boat and were using it, however, the dilemma of whether to keep or upgrade the boiler system continues on. Thanks for your kind honest words of advise. They are much appreciated x

I’ve fitted my boat on a tight budget so I’m well aware that sometimes it’s so difficult to stretch that budget but where your safety and the integrity of your home is potentially at risk vigilance at this point really is key. The boiler itself isn’t tested by the bsc other than a drop test for gas leaks. @@TheNomadicCrobot yes that was me mentioning the rust problem. I spent money on refurbishing my boiler I replaced the header tank the pump etc, only to find that the pilot light was forever going out due to the sheer amount of rust falling onto the burners. The burn chamber was rusted exactly in same place yours is and that was enough for it to be condemned by a gas safe engineer and the subsequent second opinion which cost hundreds. If your heart is set on it please please please spend a few quid on getting a qualified opinion on its condition before going any further. X
