I found Lei Elgona by complete accident. I was crystal hunting around the undersides of the marketplace, ran out of gravity juice and just thought "eh, I'll let Kat fall and respawn". Imagine my shock when I found an *entire underbelly* with desolate houses and incredibly sad music. I just floated above it for a while, amazed at my discovery.
Class conscious works have literalised class differences as top and bottom layers before - and it's a great metaphor, Metropolis-esque shit - but tying that directly to the *core mechanic* (in story and mechanical terms Kat is one of the only people capable of bridging these class divides because of her magic power!) of the game is, as you say, so genius that it's remained one of my favourite moments in gaming. GR2 rules

One thing that wasn't covered in this that I really loved when this first came out was the treasure hunts and online features. People mention that they wish they could get the costumes, but I really can't express enough how fun seeing and taking photos and sharing them online really was. You would get some goofy ass shots but also a lot of really great creative photos. Similar to messages in souls games, but with waaaay more personal expression.
It's a shame they had to shut it down because it was some of the most enjoyable and wholesome feeling multiplayer content that was unique just like everything else about the game. It made my first playthrough even more special, and although I still enjoy replaying this it will never be the same.

I discovered the game thanks to PlayStation all stars (which didn't get any ad either)

I played Gravity Rush 2 first in a shop, when it was being used as a demo for the PS4. It was both what convinced me to get a PS4, and the first game I got on the PS4. The joy of just moving around in this game cannot be overstated, especially the plethora of options you have, including some not discussed in this video! The gravity slide, walking on water in the lunar style, just jumping up buildings or covering huge distances by comboing attacks + dodges, or how each style seems to effect you in a different way? Lunar you're more floaty, in neutral you're far more controlled, and in Jupiter it's clear you have a weight and strength you're not used to - every move seems to overshoot, it's like you're slugging someone, but you so clearly possess so much more strength (not to mention how you can sometimes just crash through objects in Jupiter style).

Gravity Rush 2 was the only game I bothered to platinum on PS4 because it's so enjoyable and comfy. I'm glad I got the items before the servers were shutdown, as long as you have the save file, you can keep them. They serve to decorate Kat's house and I'm also sure I didn't get any trophy for it so completionists can enjoy it still.
Also, the director (who created Silent hill, Siren and Gravity Rush) and other members of Japan Studio have formed their own studio called Bokeh. They're doing a horror game for starters but I'm looking forward to see what they do next in the 3D platformer genre now that they're no longer pressured by Sony, I just hope they can work with tight budgets.

I tried the demo today, though-- AND HOLY @#&*($@#*&($^ this game easily has one of THE COOLEST movement systems of any game, ever-- there's something MAGICAL about flipping gravity, flying towards the edge of a building, and smashing into it, rolling and then free running SIDEWAYS across walls-- or just soaring through the buildings and zooming around enemies. Got Gravity Rush as part of the PS Plus back in the day fell in love with it and bought Gravity Rush Remaster and Gravity Rush 2 on day launch, sadly Gravity Rush 2 servers are long since dead as such a small portion f the game is forever inaccessible, you can still beat it but customisation features are forever lost.

I am 3 years too late for that but I NEED to write this comment:
Back in late 2016 I was a "Nintendo only" Player. I skipped through the E3 to get to the Nintendo treehouse section and than it happened. I skipped and saw 1 second of the early Gravity Rush 2 gameplay. I stopped and was just speechless on how cool and beautiful this game looked and I felt bad for not being able to play it...for the first time in my live. I ended up buying a PS4 and bought the first game as my first real Playstation game. And I loved it. And when early 2017 came I showed up I ran into the store and bought it. It is one of ... if not my most loved gaming franchise even now...and Kat my favourite protagonist. I loved how she always thinks different to how she answers people...and the game shows us both. The gameplay is something that is also still unique to this day. I dont know why all the JAPAN STUDIO games went under the radar because tbh...on every Nintendo console they would be huge games for years to come. The creativity easily defeats one of Nintendos biggest sellers.
I also bought some Gravity Merch. 4 figures and a Japan only little special collection.
I have to thank you for your video. It almost made me cry on how sad this game got treated. I am also currently making Deals with my friends where I have to play something they want me to experience...and vice versa. And you can imagine which games I want them to experience. 🎉

Mate Sony Interactive Entertainment heavily advertised it during several major gaming events for years, created an entire free chapter for it, remastered the original to draw in fans, collaborated with several publishers to get Kat into as many crossovers as possible, countless live trailers, even going so far as to have an entire animated series built for it for everyone to watch at no actual cost to the fans
If anything it was the fan base that failed SIE not the other way around

My mother bought this game for me back in 2012 when I wouldn't get off the demo in stores. I've been a pretty longtime fan of the game and the sequel, and I've gotten basically every achievement and the dusty token exclusive content. xD The thing that sucks the most is it's so underrated, and you explained that quite nicely. It's one of those games you never can experience again, and I wish it blew up like it should have because despite being a sequel, you don't need to play the first game! It's entirely self-contained, and sure, some context to the story is removed, but it's not like it's unrecognizable. All you really need to know is how to fly (very difficult, fell off my roof a few times before I got the hang of it xD) and that Kat's an adorable amnesiac. Get the first game if you really want to, but it's not a necessity (but I still recommend it because it's still great in its own entirety).
I'll be honest, the story's not the reason why I play the game. For me, it's still a big part because I enjoy the lore of the world, but the flying? Kat's character? the adventure? the atmosphere? the music? those all tie into what makes the world itself so special and not necessarily what makes the story special. Everything feels like this hazy, beautiful mess that you slowly fall through. Thanks for the video and listening to my rant, lol.

I am so sad that a couple of the costumes are locked to online (and/or preorder?) because I really wanted a few of them.. Unfortunately I only got the game after all servers had shut down at around march 2019
Aside from that, I absolutely love both the original remastered and the second game!
I happened to stumble upon them in my local GameStop (when that was still a thing in my country) in the pre-owned bin, and decided to pick them up on a whim. I was literally halfways through the remastered when I realized that 8 hours had passed in one sitting. I was instantly hooked to the story and the gameplay.
I actually decided to play the entire series in chronological order too, just to get most out of the story, which included a well timed 20-30 minute movie break for the animated short.
About 80 hours of gameplay, including 40% of that time just floating around the world and exploring, and doing optional quests and such, the verdict is clear as day:
These will forever remain as some of my all time favourite games, along the lines of NieR: Automata and majority of the Final Fantasy series.

@@comdrive3865 Sales went pretty bad compared to other releases in the same timeframe (e.g. Horizon: Zero Dawn), so the playerbase was only the couple few that wanted to play the sequel, or just happened to stumble upon it.
The pricing is due to the game being a Sony exclusive game. They could sell it for less to attract a wider playerbase, but at the same time, they gotta make money on a product they put a good deal of time, effort and finances into. I don't remember the production cost of the sequel, but the launch sales definitely didn't make up for it completly.
Online features was cut due to both reasons. A playerbase too small and server costs. Since it's an exclusive title, they host the servers themselves.
Honestly it's sad though, since I am sure some of the money they get from PS Plus could easily keep the servers going, but well, I'm no Sony executive.

OMG how have I never even _heard_ of Puppeteer before today?
I've been buying Sony consoles for awhile now, big Gravity Rush fan and aware of/played most everything else mentioned here. But this one threw me for a loop; it looks positively groundbreaking from a visual perspective.
    Honestly it's a good thing Team Asobi is successful nowadays because one hopes they could resurrect some Japan Studios past gems, Gravity Rush first and foremost, due to their corporate lineage. There's rumors out there but nothing's materialized yet. >_>;
... regarding actual video content, I think calling the game's physical representation of class disparity "genius" is laying it on a little thick, but I won't deny it's a gorgeous application. Truth be told though I just wanted to spend all my time in Lei Havina, in Kat's fancy dress listening to that lush, seemingly-Gundam inspired soundtrack, in Lunar Style specifically 😅. I probably did exactly that for an hour recently when I loaded up the game for nostalgic kicks (and fervent desires for a frame-rate patch).

The problem with unique and creative games is that they are unappealing to casuals who generally don't play games for storytelling and innovative gameplay. The majority of people who own a playstation just want to kill germans and play football. Creative and unique games are often pretty niche with small but dedicated fanbases. I personally prefer those creative and unique games, but I am part of a minority.

I would like to give MY humble opinion on what I think about GR and GR2 (so please don't get angry if I say something you don't agree with. Thank you). Therefore, I believe that the two GRs are nice games, with a good Lore, beautiful to look at and with a beautiful and adorable protagonist. Ok, I've finished the nice things I had to say, let's move on to the facts. I find the gameplay of GR, awkward and very repetitive. You see the monster, Kat floats in the air, press Square and Bam, attack done. There is no real strategy in fighting, you fly, you aim at the enemy and then Kat does everything, moreover, after a certain time, you also get tired of attacking the Nevi and activate triangle to launch the powerful attack that speeds up the clashes, In my opinion, this happens because you fight too many times, and to make matters worse the enemies must be hit in the nuclei, nuclei that must be hit over and over again with the gravitational kick, which often misses the target (especially against the flying Snows... damned " Nevi Swordfish"). Even the missions are mostly boring, take an object/guy and carry/throw in a certain place (in the first GR you will almost only do this, plus fighting the Nevi of course), also in the first GR there is a mission where you will have to fall for kilometers and kilometers in a pit where you will then have to avoid Raven's attacks (I hate that part) and vice versa, shortly after you will do a mission where you will have to go back up the long fall (Woohoo, exciting). In GR2 things improve a little, but not the substance, the side missions are boring (they range from Steath done wrong, to the [usual] fights, collecting objects, missions where you take an object that you have to carry or throw (some remember the mission of the stinky package... yeah, funny right?), ah right, you'll have to do 3 races against a seagull, exciting. There are other secondary ones not listed, but mostly always boring (I'll tell you only two: the one about the dog who lost the freesbee and that damn moving mission with the small van... I hate that one). I admit I liked the ending, even if the secret chapter is really boring, including the final boss battle. you will think that I hate these two games... not exactly, I don't like them, but hate is a big word, they sure aren't games for everyone. Personally, I find them quite bad games, good in intentions but bad in mechanics and gameplay. If I had to say a truly underrated game from Japan Studio, I wouldn't say GR, but I would say "Puppeteer," beautiful, fun and beautifully done, but sadly unknown 2D platformer. If, on the other hand, I had to choose a Japan Studio game that I love and which I consider to be an absolute masterpiece and true pride of Japan Studio, I would say Ape Escape, or rather, the Ape Escape trilogy (which I hope still returns today in modern graphics). Thanks for reading this papyrus, but I wanted to tell you what you thought about GR. As I said, please don't get angry if you don't agree with what you've read, I've only given my very personal opinion about these two games.

Sony dissolving Japan Studio has single-handedly caused me to never want to own another piece of hardware they make. Like 90% of the appeal of owning these consoles derived from the games those studios made (the other 10% being from Wipeout, which is also gone now, and Ratchet & Clank). What's left is generic western AAA drivel, honestly, and it's almost all what I personally would consider trash.
Such a massive shame that we won't be getting games as incredible as Gravity Rush anymore. Sony can only hope some third parties eventually show up to fill in that gap for PS5, or else I really have no idea how they think it's going to have any lasting appeal. I know I don't currently plan on ever owning one.

Listen, I love this game, and I'm glad you do too. That being said, I could not disagree more with your take on Jirga Para Lhao maybe being one of the most important locations in gaming. In my opinion the quest you're referring to is absolutely one of the lowest points in the entire game. The social commentary is so in your face that (if I remember correctly) the rich snobby lady is literally burning life saving supplies that the poor people need, and she's doing it for FUN. She's a cartoon villain, and the societal prescription that rich people should stop being so evil, that military goons shouldn't mercilessly slaughter hooligans, and poor people should stop doing crime completely misses any opportunity for any real social critique. It's all so on the nose, and it feels like I'm being lectured or talked down to to play that quest. The game is screaming in my face that there's a right answer, and it's right answer is the most shallow engagement with that topic.
Mechanically, I think that quest is mostly pretty boring just like the majority of other quests in the game.
To balance that all out, I think the light mode movement in Gravity Rush 2 is my absolute favorite movement system in any game, and nothing probably even comes close. I cannot believe how insanely fun it is to jump around, I spent hours and hours jumping around collecting crystals, totally enraptured. I wish so so so badly more of the game asked you to use that amazing system to accomplish stuff, instead of just flying from point A to B and throwing physics stuff around. To anyone who's never played much with this system. I encourage you to replay the game flying as little as possible and to simply platform around collecting gems in light mode, shifting gravity only when you need to.
    UNRELATED RANT AHEAD
I think game stories get a big pass on criticism compared to other media. If Gravity Rush 2s story was adapted to be a movie, or a book with the same quality level, I think it would get absolutely slammed. To be fair, I think it's hard to make a fun game with a good story. Probably really hard considering I've only ever played a few games with mechanics and story interwoven to compliment each other really well. If I think about games that I played that I think did it well it's probably got to be Pathologic 2, Undertale, Lisa the Painful, Celeste, Hades, and Darkwood to name a few.

It's really interesting to actually hear another side of the argument I made on Jirga Para Lhao and I totally see where you're coming from with that.
That said, I don't know where you're from, but in the UK right now, our government is literally them. They have scrapped every tax cap for the rich, forced the energy bills higher for the poor and are making life impossible for everyone, except the rich (and do not even get me started on the shit show that is Brexit). This divide is literally happening in the most outlandish in your face way to the point where our currency has dipped to be the lowest it's ever been in history.
Sometimes you need something over the top to exaggerate the point...or in the case of the UK right now, be right on the money.
As for the light movement, I'll definitely have to give that a go at some point.

@@tealgamemaster Yeah, that's a pretty good way to put it. It's kinda cartoonish, but that's not necessarily a bad thing when reality becomes cartoonish. I can admit I might be a little testy when I feel patronized after dealing with a lot of pretension in real life. Maybe I could have enjoyed that story more if I had a more open perspective and tried to enjoy it like a Saturday morning cartoon or something.
I think generally, when a piece of media has a strong moral center, I really like it when things are structured so it resembles an argument instead of a lecture. After thinking about it some, maybe I could like stuff that seems to be lecturing as long as it's cheesy or over the top enough.
For the US, I think we have a problem with characterizing the other side as simple idiots, so the simple good guy bad guy cheesy stuff isn't super relevant anymore.
Unhinged, high effort rant about politics ahead:
I'm from the US. For what it's worth, I would guess we probably align on a lot of political stuff. In the US the two major parties really talk past each other a lot and we're kinda in a gridlock. Our system really requires that people get on the same page about stuff and vote in candidates that have the best solutions. The right leaning side of our system is going a little wild right now. They have a lot of misgivings after seeing my side (left) kinda act like holier than thou assholes. We kinda successfully shouted them down so that big parts of their world views became social taboo. They have no media that speaks to their values, and that fomented anger from all of that has kinda come out as this insane brand of anti-intellectual anti-establishment populism that is really causing a lot of problems for everyone.
In our system, we really need a lot more empathy for these people if we want to build a better future with them. Left leaning ideas feel good, but they have a lot of complex ideas that don't lend themselves well to simple snappy explanations, and no one is making the effort to give those explanations in a way the other side can hear it.
For example, I talked to someone about this the other day, should we make birth control free and accessible?
Someone on the right side would say that it's everyone's personal responsibility not to do dumb stuff and get pregnant. Why should the government have to pay for the mistakes (and they definitely are mistakes) of some dumb teenage girl who couldn't manage the basic task of not getting pregnant? She's going to have to rise to the task of raising that kid, because that's the consequences of her actions. They KNOW that it's possible to rise to that task, because they've seen people do it before, so they think it's reasonable to expect from her.
Someone on the left would say, "You have no compassion for this young human being, because deep down you're a monster and you probably want to watch her suffer. She didn't have good education or support and it's the system's fault this happened."
Instead, the left person needs to have a little more empathy and meet someone where they are. They don't realize that they are operating from a totally different perspective, and that you need to speak to their values if you ever hope to achieve anything with anyone.
Someone on the left SHOULD say, "You pay either way. Either you pay for a few cheap pills for someone every month, and you pay to educate them so they make good, empowering decisions, or you pay for that woman to get food stamps for at least 18 years because she couldn't go to college and raise a kid at the same time. Then you pay for her kid to go through the education system, only to flunk out at 16 and start banging on the corner. Then you pay for his life in prison. Then society pays when he feeds into a system that leeches life out of areas because he's wrapped up in the drug trade and no one wants to open up businesses in these places where crime is rampant. Then you pay to support everyone in those areas who can't afford food because it's only one ma and pa grocery store in a 40 mile radius where everything costs double what it does at Walmart, or better yet just eat a diet of Mcdonalds for a few years because they have the cheapest easiest food available so everyone ends up diabetic straining the medical system even further.
The right side is on point when they say ANYONE CAN be exceptional. Anyone can rise above their circumstances and be an entrepreneur who makes big bucks and always has it together. The problem is, almost EVERYBODY WON'T. People (in aggregate) will act in predictable ways if you put them in certain circumstances. We need to construct a society where more than JUST EXCEPTIONAL people from the bottom can succeed. Even better, we can monetize these people so EVERYONE wins. Give someone a good enough education and support network in their young life, and even an average person can go to college. Then, they land a $60,000 a year job and generate an absolute mountain of wealth for our country that we can put back into whatever social programs funded their ascent. If we give them the startup money, they can pay for plenty of other people who maybe don't even make it out of their hometown. And isn't that the greatest investment you could imagine? Investing in your own citizens so they can self actualize and chase their actual dreams? And that system runs better than the one where you don't want to pay for some dumb little pills, because all of those people who succeed will consume and produce for the majority of their lives that they would have spent leeching and probably being a bad parent instead.
And so that's kinda my points.
1, You've got to speak to people's values. Instead of going on about how cruel the right leaning person is, see if you can identify what they want to see in the world, you're system might give them what they want. In that little ramble I talked about economic efficiency, created empathy for a poor person trying to succeed, and essentially the American dream (which right people love over here.) We've all been making the mistake of not doing this for a while now.
2,You're at a disadvantage when you're trying to pull people from the right, to the left. Look at how long all that is for what someone on the left should say to address the same issue that someone on the right can address in a few sentences, and virtually anyone unexposed to the issue can understand the right leaning person immediately. You can't really cut a whole lot out either because you have to challenge a lot of assumptions right leaning people are making about "fairness" for example. Pulling people to the left takes time and nuance, and if you shut someone's brain off by calling them a "sexist" in your first response, you'll never get that time. They might actually be sexist, but it still doesn't matter. It doesn't help you if you audibly identify them as a sexist, it helps you if you understand them and are understood by them
That ends my insane rant on empathy and reaching out to the other side. Right leaning people need to do it too, because you guys probably suck at that even worse than the left. I wanted to write all this down anyway to organize my thoughts, and why not do it an a Gravity Rush 2 review video? I hope someone else get something out of this too.

It would be like if a piece of media critiqued racism by putting a fat cat CEO who's super mega racist at center stage, and he destroys his own company because he fires all the black people and they were really productive so the company goes out of business.
The moral of the story would be so bland and obvious. It wouldn't give you anything to think about, just things to accept.
I can understand how some people would be in to a simple story with a simple villain like that now, but I don't think it would be some sort of interesting social commentary.
I feel that Gravity Rush 2 is so over the top and cartoonish that I personally couldn't enjoy the story, and I actually kinda felt like I hated it because of that simplicity.
I truly think that if you feel that your political opposition would object to any moral told in the story of Gravity Rush 2, then I think it's safe to say you're out of touch with people who don't see things the same way you do.

Late comment but I agree that it's a very heavy-handed take, and not quite as "amazing" in its commentary as the video would have you believe. The real world having its own sad, cartoonish examples doesn't detract from the feeling of "...yeah I get it 😒" so poignantly phrased by Egoraptor many moons ago 😂
I do, however, agree with the video creator that it's still visually amazing and actually getting to shift up and up and up into the sky was awesome. The moment you think to yourself "ooh I bet there's stuff up/down there" and it's actually there when you manage to do it, it's just glorious. Very rewarding in that sense.

As someone who missed out on the game at the time, I can give some insight as to why it didn't do better at the time. Bad marketing. I remember that any time I saw gameplay for GR and GR2, it was ALWAYS combat focused, and they never really delved into the world or anything else. If you were following the game, then you probably would know more, but for those of us not following the game, it was really marketed as just simply an action combat game. Nothing wrong with that, but I was burnt out at the time with those games.
