If the protagonist is named Kat and accompanied by a cat, it's already a wonderful start^^ It may sound stupid, but the first thing that came to my mind when you started talking about intentional disempowerment were the Athletic Levels from Super Mario Sunshine. You rely on Fludd so much that you feel like a clueless baby the first time you get it taken from you. With each instance of such a level, you get more and more used to the clunky controls and more precise maneuvering you have to deal with until you eventually see Fludd more as an extension of your actual abilities or a safety net than a necessity. Or at least some players do, the majority, me included, probably had a hard time all the way through. But it's interesting game design nonetheless, especially if it's done with core gamemplay mechanics like in Sunshine or Gravity Rush. Never heard about the game before btw, but it looks pretty cool! Even from just watching the video footage you can see how "unnatural" the controls probably are. And the world design sometimes reminds me of Lovecraft's Dreamworlds. Should keep this one in mind if I want to buy something new :D
that's a really interesting comparison! this is a very unpopular opinion with some people (and i'm sorry) but Sunshine is probably my least favourite 3D Mario, and the only one i didn't ever finish - that being said, i haven't played it in like a decade, and i'd love to go back to it to see if teenage me was wrong. i just never felt comfortable with the controls, but not like with this game, where it was just a small stumbling block. i'd recommend it! i haven't played GR2, but i've heard it's even better.
Nah that's a valid point, another mini version of that one be when Joel gets impaled in The Last of Us Part 1 and you are far less capable then you were before
I've only watched 4 of your vids and I'm amazed how you're numbers aren't as high as some other people I watch who do the same type of vids you do. I know numbers are a pretty shallow thing to begin with but you seriously deserve more attention :) just from watching this and the Yonder vid has made me want to buy them both! And your vid for FF has made me want to buy some of the better ones just so I can experience them before watching your (eventual) analysis on them. I know this will only be a RUclips comment but if anything, you're the first person on this platform who's Patreon link I've actually gone and clicked. Props to you man :) look forward to your future work. Sincerely, one of your (many more to come) new subs
I love gravity rush so much! I actually never thought about the feelings of helplessness when those moments occurred of no powers. You make really valid points And I'll be sure to keep an eye on if they do anything similar during my first play through of gravity rush 2
I know this wasn't really the point of the video, but Kat is genuinely one of my favorite characters. No, she's not particularly deep, but she's endearingly upbeat about almost everything and wears her emotions on her sleeve. She, in a way, reminds me a lot of Goku, a character that is almost unflappably cheerful, taking everything in stride. She's so much fun to watch and play as.
It's very interesting Kat in Playstation all stars battle royale this theme put in his game, when in his history mode his reason to fight with the others characters like Kratos, Nathan Drake, Parappa, etc... His for more power, because she needs him for turning capable for control his Powers and make more useful, but in sometime when she turn face with his rival Emmet Graves (Starhawk), in a dialogue specific he cuestión Kat's reason for get more power from Polygon man (the final BOSS), he says the posible consequences for get more power when she's not get the entire control of his power make him dangerous, in that moment Kat thinks about his reason for continúe cuestión for herself, i know this moment is not cannon in gravity rush universe (or maybe because that dialogue in GOW Ragnarok), but it's interesting that moment with the speak theme of this vídeo, greetings i probé my english in case i write something wrong XD, nice vídeo dude.

I just picked this up. Got so lost in it that, surprise, 3 am. And I’m going to get back to it just after I finish my breakfast. Will probably (unintentionally) go till 3 or 4 am again today. lol Unless I finish it before then. I’ve had dreams like this! And yes it’s just as satisfying (maybe even more so) as the game (minus the enemies) Worse’t part of those dreams is waking up.
It feels like it would be quite difficult to disempower the player in a way that adds to the game, but it seems like this game did it well! Very cool :D
Great work! I find this game so aesthetically pleasing, yet I never played it. Got Gravity Rush 2 in a promotion, but could never get to buy 1, here in my country it is extremely expensive, unfortunately. Still, your video got me so interested to play it! Maybe I'll skip to 2.
Given that most of the staff's other games are all horror titles, the comparisons to powerlessness in that genre are distinctly apt.

@@Ludiscere so is it good?
the analysis of the personal immersion with Kat is pretty neat, never thought of such stuff much.
Man I had a PS Vita and it was such a good game for that platform! I really liked it.
for sure! it was really nice to play it through again on the PS4.
Oh man, I love gravity rush, I'd been looking forward to this. Just like Gravity Rush, this channel is a hidden gem!
that's very sweet of you to say!

There's a small detail that I love in Gravity Rush, which is Kat's ''superhero landing''. It's TERRIBLE, she basically faceplant the floor I love it.
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for making it. Look forward to seeing more of your content.
appreciate that, thank you!
Kat is best Sony girl, tho i rlly need her on switch
Extremely well done video. Great work!
Oh hell yes, I can always do with more videos on Gravity Rush.
Plus Dusty always is giving you help to use her powers.
Great talk, can't wait for more videos! :)
8:43 "cats: 4/20" nice
Yay! Gravity Rush getting some recognition! I’ve never played the first game, but Gravity Rush 2 is freaking amazing and I’m glad I discovered it.

it's a really interesting game! it's not something i've seen loads, so it was cool to see an example like this that actually did it well :)
all i am going to say here is this has a 1 episode anime.
Such a good video! :)
This game is rad, I'm so glad it got a remaster. It was a really good game.
Maybe the controls were somewhat clunky but your gameplay is all over the place man!

I'm kind of upset that you dont have more subscribers
that's sweet of you to say, thank you :) nice ragdoll icon btw!
The Creator of Gravity Rush made the first Silent Hill and the Siren Series so it makes sense.
cool, cool, cool, cool
