Panel De Pon - When Tetris Attacks

  • Today, Jonii's talking about the Super Famicom game Panel De Pon, a puzzle game similar to Puyo Puyo. Nintendo decided that Lip and her cast of anime fairy girls weren't going to be marketable in the West though, so Yoshi broke his way into their world on an army of Tetris blocks. What will become of our loveable fairies?

Honestly, seeing Panel de Pon getting all this love lately is incredible. Sure Nintendo hasn’t treated it the best, but the fanbase has been super strong, and this video being put together is a sign of that in my eyes. So as a fan, thank you and everyone who’s worked on this video.

The whole history of Panel De Pon's treatment frustrates me. From Tetris Attack to the N64 Panel De Pon game being reskinned into Pokemon Puzzle League worldwide including Japan and the Panel De Pon skin being hidden from the localization of Planet Puzzle League.... It's ridiculous the only way this series had any sort of justice was the Tetris Company not wanting anything to do with Tetris Attack ever again thus leaving Nintendo's only option to put SNES Panel De Pon on Nintendo Switch Online for every region.

It's even funnier to me considering that i've been aways into feminine stuff since childhood, watching numerous cartoons for girls, playing with friends dolls and even the adults thought i would be gay (i'm not, but i'm still into girly shit), so a puzzle game (love puyo puyo and tetris) about cute fairies fighting eachother through puzzles would probably be a birthday present for me lol.

Despite being a Panel De Pon fan, I managed to learn a few new things from this video such as the game releasing the same day as Puyo Puyo 2 and Lip's extra dialogue if you wait around on the Easy clear screen.

Personally I don't think localizing the game by adding Yoshi was all that bad of an idea, for the reasons you stated in the video. Personally, however, I take umbrage with the name "Tetris Attack" which would give players no clue whatsoever that the game Nintendo so painstakingly localized had Yoshi in it. At the very least, the original Panel De Pon got officially released over here via the switch online service but I wouldn't mind it making a return. It's a very cute game.

Tetris Attack is quite the game, no?
This is my second favorite Yoshi game, despite his name not being in the title. It's fun to have the option to play as various characters from Yoshi's Island. My "main" is Raphael the Raven.
Panel de Pon is certainly an ambitious puzzler. The sprites are well done, the colors are pretty, the music is a banger, and the gameplay loop is satisfying. That being said? I think that it's for the best that I stick to Tetris Attack; it allows me to stay grounded as a lifelong Mario fanboy. I will say that the original fairies are easy on the eyes though.
You touched on how the artwork for the Yoshi characters are a bit of a downgrade. Fair enough. I think that in the mid-90s, Mario artwork was mostly restricted to instruction manuals, so seeing in-game art was kinda neat. I also love the biographies of each character.
This is a nice look into the history of this game!

26:55 You are correct about what that Japanese text says. As you've seen, all of the translation apps do a pretty poor job with Japanese. In my experience, DeepL is the one that works the best. I don't think it has OCR capability built in (which you would've needed in this case), but someone made a program that links DeepL with a free OCR program. (I haven't had a chance to try this linking program out yet, as I just learned about it.)

If I had a nickle for every time a Japanese color matching puzzle game got localized differently in the states, I'd have two nickles ect. ect.
Boyo though despite it all, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge for GBC was one hell of a localization. Looking back on it I'm surprised it kept a lot of things from the original like the isometric story transitions and such. Sure you couldn't see the opponent to try and strategize, but I guess you're just gonna be focusing on your puzzle screen like 90% of the time anyhow. Plus the GBC Pokemon remixes were all legitimate bangers. Kinda strange they're not like revamping Panel De Pon though aside slapping the JPN release on SNES Online, even Puyo is embracing it's roots so always thought it was weird this one didn't give another shot on it's own. gotta be honest though the Killer Instinct localization change would have been hilarious, not only out of all franchises they picked that, but I'd love to see how that would be translated story wise.
Nother good video tho. Love this.

In the 1980s, Ottawa (the capital of Canada) had a system that, to my understanding, was similar to satellaview, it was called NABU, but it used cable instead of satellite.

18:36 I like to imagine NoA using the same voice actress they had for Kirby from Avalanche and Toad from Wario's Woods. Apparently, she provided voice samples for this game as well (Robin Krause), but I'm not sure who? Maybe Flying Wiggler?

Panel De Pon's an interesting game regardless of the system. Certainly has a lot of *pride* in both meanings.

I was wondering if you could do a video on the history of Tower of Druaga and what happened to the franchise because the game was very memorable to me when I played it as a kid and that game was a big reason on how I got interested in fantasy games and some horror because the setting was implied to be a dark dungeon despite the fact that it didn't look evil considering how you could see where you're going.

Just think. If Nintendo localized these games and gave them love outside of Japan, lip might have been in smash. There could have been a lot more games from All the attention they would have gotten

I bought Tetris Attack back in the day and loved it. To be honest, my fondness for Yoshi probably had a hand in it. I probably wouldn't have bought it if it were still Panel de Pon. Now, what I want to know is what does this game have to do with Tetris and why isn't Yoshi on the cover? Was Nintendo USA allergic to cute covers? That Bust a Move puzzle game did the same thing by leaving Bub and Bob off of the cover.

I will say that for every game except planet Puzzle league (for the DS) they have two music tracks for each stage the normal song and the panicked version when the blocks get to high up.
It'd be nice to have a remaster or a new game for the switch- as panel de pon got a GC remaster in the Japanese only release of nintendo puzzle collection, and up to four people could play at once alongside all the new remixed songs and character designs- whether it be Panel de Pon, Pokemon Puzzle league remastered, or something else.
It'd be fun to be able to play with 4 or more people in a garbage battle.

it's good that panel de pon got a worldwide rerelease on switch online but god i wish tetris attack got on there as well. the game has so much charm to me as a big fan of yoshi's island. and i can't connect a cartridge to the internet to play online, haha
plus it seems that the SNES version has never rereleased once. the game boy version got released on 3ds VC for some reason, but the SNES is left in the dust.
