  • Today, I, Jonii will be taking a look at the first installment in Compile's famous Puyo Puyo series, which was later purchased by Sega. In particular, there will be a heavy emphasis on the game's many ports as well as the mysterious English translation of the arcade version, which later cropped up officially as a port of Sega Ages Puyo Puyo. I will do Arle proud.

First off Arle was only 5 in the part one of Madou Monogatari, 2 and 3 already had her as a teenager, also a big help for Schezo and Rulue to become staples in the series was because of their importance in the Madou series.
The version with the improved character graffics was on the PC-98 not the PC-88, (also if you press esc right before the ending you'll get a sprite change with Arle drunk)
There was a port for the Turbografix16 (PC engine) that had redone cutscenes with full voice acting with new voice actors (the one for Arle being Kotono Mitsuishi the voice actress for Sailor Moon) tittled Puyo Puyo CD.
Mission mode was actually bought back in some versions like Game gear and PC-98 versions, and even got two standalone releases on the Game gear, one on the Super Famicon with RPG elements and Rulue as a second protagonist, with a sequel on the satellaview.
Also there was another port on the Nokia-N-Gage with color changes on the character portraits and less stages.
And finally the 1991 game somewhat got a port/remaster? on mobile that added a Arle portrait to side of the screen ruclips.net/video/J_N2ho_0x0s/видео.html

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was my introduction to Puyo Puyo, and I'm sure it's the same for others.
I never touched Tetris until like a few years ago. So there's this weird road of Puyo Puyo introducing me to Tetris via the crossover despite Tetris being extremely popular even today. And now I'm hooked on both, even though I'm bad at Tetris.
I was also shocked to learn at some point that Puyo Puyo is a spin-off. People say Persona is the biggest example of a spin-off outgrowing the main series, but I think that award goes towards Puyo Puyo.

My first experience with Puyo Puyo was Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, but specifically in Sega Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection on the PS3 (I think its called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection in North America). I saw Puyo Puyo Tetris gameplay in 2018 and I decided to get it, and now I'm obsessed with the series. I didn't even realise that Puyo Puyo Tetris was the first Puyo Puyo game to be released internationally in over a decade at first, and it shocked me even more to find out that the game was originally released in Japan in 2014. I thought I wad playing a new game, but it turns out I was playing a port for a game that Japanese people had access to for 3 years before I did.

"I don't know what Carbunkle is." Carbunkle is a Carbunkle. A mythological, magic rabbit or fox creature that is often used in fantasy properties, and was especially popularized by the Yu-Gi-Oh monster of the same name.

    • @travisjordan3853
      @travisjordan3853 2 года назад +2

Actually it was Puyo Puyo and Final Fantasy that are responsible for popularizing the creature Carbuncle in Japanese media, at least that's according to the Japanese wikipedia article on the creature: ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC%E3%83%90%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AB_(%E4%BC%9D%E8%AA%AC%E3%81%AE%E7%94%9F%E7%89%A9).
Puyo Puyo's Carbuncle first made his deput in Madou Monogatari [1990], while Final Fantasy's Carbuncle made it's first appearance in Final Fantasy V [1992] (although Final Fantasy III which released two years earlier featured an enemy named Carbuncle, who aside from the name had absolutely nothing to do with the recurring summon monster). Meanwhile, Yu-Gi-Oh's version of Carbuncle didn't debut in Yu-Gi-Oh until 2007, seventeen years after Puyo Puyo's version and fifteen years after Final Fantasy's version.
Its much more likely that Yu-Gi-Oh based their version on the Final Fantasy one, as it wouldn't be the first time that Yu-Gi-Oh featured a monster based on a creature from the Final Fantasy series, as Yu-Gi-Oh also features the Bracchio-raidus [yugipedia.com/wiki/Bracchio-raidus ] who is almost certainly based on the recurring Final Fantasy monster, Brachioraidos [finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Brachioraidos ]. I mean not only are their names the same in Japanese, ブラキオレイドス (Burakioreidosu), but the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh wiki even cites Final Fantasy as the original source of the monster (Unfortunately I can't provide a direct link as I can't get it to work for some reason so you'll just have to try searching for ブラキオレイドス on the wiki: yugioh-wiki.net/ ).
Anyways, both the Final Fantasy and Puyo Puyo series most likely derived their use of Carbuncle from the Book of Imaginary Beings [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Imaginary_Beings ]; a compendium of various mythical creatures from folklore and literature, compiled and written by famed Argentitian writer, Jorge Luis Borges. The book was originally published in 1957 and then received an English translation in 1969. The English version of the book was then translated into Japanese by translator Naoki Yanase in 1974, and was successful enough to be reprinted a number of times in Japan, so its very likely that the book was used as a reference for many Japanese creators.

38:05 As the expert one Gamegear localizations this is a common misconception.
-GG Alleste 2 is power strike 2 outside of Japan and gets a different title screen.
-Donald no magical world (japanese exclusive) changes language based on region.
-Pop Breaker is only playable on a Japanese system.
-Puyo Puyo, a Japanese exclusive, is called "Puzlow Kids" when played on a non-Japanese system.
-Tails Adventure changes language based on region
-Magical Puzzle Popils changes the default language on bootup based on region and is changeable in the options menu.
-Batman Returns has a soundtest menu if you hold start on bootup but only when running on a Japanese system.
-Streets of Rage called Bare Knuckle on the title screen on a Japanese system.
-Streets of Rage II called Bare Knuckle II on the title screen on a Japanese system.
-Ristar has an extra level when played on a Japanese system
-Buster Fight (japanese exclusive) changes language based on region.
-Sonic Blast called G Sonic on the title screen of Japanese Systems
And the TV tuner works on every system but is region locked in that it's made to receiver the TV frequencies of that region.
I'm the guy that compiled all the region differences between gamegear games. Seeing as at the start of 2021 there was no info on this topic beyond some stray forum mentions and the puyo-puyo wiki (which I assume you have this info from) which also mentions Donald no magical world.
A lot of these region checking were simply to save on manufacturing I imagine like with early Megadrive games. Though in cases that never left Japan I imagine there where plans from the developer to release them outside of Japan but the publisher said no. And in the case of Ristar it was due to adjusting to western sensibilities as the cut level was "too hard". And in the case of Pop Breaker IDK so I speculate it's the only gamegear game with intentional regionlocking, but could also simply be a bug in the code.
I know way to much about gamegear region differences in a single cart... The system proclaimed around the net to not have a region.

Another thing worth noting about the english translation: In nearly all future puyo games, Satan is referred to as Dark Prince, just as he was in the arcade and game gear versions. Hell, the only time he's actually called Satan overseas is in the e-manual for the Sega 3D Classics Collection on the 3DS. Whether this is due to religious censorship or just a matter of consistency...well, we'll never know.

    • @quagstar
      @quagstar 2 года назад +6

I'm guessing it is for religious reasons. The "puyo puyo underworld" mentioned in English versions is literally called "puyo puyo hell" in Japan. That does lead to the very funny song name of "fun puyo puyo hell" which you should look up and listen to if you don't know why that name is so hilariously unfitting.
I doubt that it is for the sake of consistency, considering a lot of things were changed between the English versions of puyo puyo fever and puyo puyo tetris (Rider changed to Lidelle, Raffine changed to Raffina, Carbuncle went from saying "ta da" to "gu", etc) even more changes were made from the original game to puyo puyo tetris. It would be weird to only care about consistentcy when it comes to dark prince/satan, since even Arle had her name changed from the original dub.

Plus, there was also two PC localizations; Qwirks, by Alexy Patinjov, which replaced all of the Madou Monogatari characters except for Carbuncle (renamed to Cosmo in there.) with original characters. And Timon and Pumbaa's Bug Drop, which scrubs off every single Madou Monogatari character and replaced them with the titular Timon and Pumbaa, the Puyos being replaced with colourful bugs, and garbage puyos being replaced with rocks or stones. It wasn't included on the SNES version of Jungle Games because there was already a version of Puyo Puyo released for that console.

I love puyo puyo, but considering how it has been a pretty much Japanese exclusive series until recently, it's cool to learn about stuff that I wasn't aware of before. The ost for pretty much every puyo puyo game is way better than it needs to be. The final battle theme in Puyo Puyo fever, where you literally fight a cat to get a cane, is really intense and amazing. It is especially great when it is playing in the background of a somewhat questionable sounding English dub.

An interesting note about the Game Gear region detection is that it's also present on the Master System and the Genesis.
The best Master System example I know of is Power Strike, the US version of Aleste. The Master System boot ROM displays its own Sega logo, so games generally forego showing their own, and Power Strike is no exception. However, whether with an adapter or with emulation, if you run Power Strike on the SMS's Japanese counterpart the Mark III (which has no such boot ROM), it will actually display its own Sega logo on startup, and iirc will also use its Japanese "Aleste" branding. This Sega logo is actually unique to Power Strike, as a real Japanese copy of Aleste instead displays a Sega Mark III logo on that screen instead!
Now, on the Genesis, region detection is not a little known fact, as many games use it for region-locking. However, a few games use it for regional adaptation. One of these games is the first Streets of Rage, which selects between that Western branding and the Japanese "Bare Knuckle" branding based on the region jumper. This also determines the language of the intro text crawl. Funnily enough, if you use a modded-in switch or an emulator to change which region the system shows during the text crawl, you'll get to see that all the lines that come in after the region-switch will be in the other language to obey the new configuration.

The Madou Monogatari series has strangely complicated lore (get ready this is really long and please correct me if I get something wrong )
Satan (or dark prince) is a powerful being who fell in love with a woman, they were persecuted and made a new world to exist in.This new world is the one of Madou Monogatari.
There’s a dark force or something so a hero goes to defeat it and seals it.
Schezo is on a tour of the place where it was sealed in with a bunch of people and accidentally gets corrupted by this dark force.
Baby Arle goes into the forest and gets lost, she learns magic from faeries, and finds her way home
(this is why she shouts spells like: fire, ice storm, diacute, brain dumb [mind blast], Jugem, and Bayoen)
She enrolled into a Magic school and to graduate she has to survive a tower and make it to the end. As she reaches the end she sees her teachers and classmates only to realize it was a monster in disguise, she beats it, graduates, that’s it.
Let’s go over to Rulue, she gets trapped in a labyrinth and tries to navigate it, she gets rescued by Satan and that’s why she loves him.
Arle is now 16 and things happen. Satan loves her because he thinks she’s the reincarnation of his dead beloved. Rulue gets jealous but she and Arle become friends after trying to murder her. This is also the game where Schezo gets decapitated.
I literally cannot remember the rest of the franchise other than Schezo gets revived so let’s skip to the end.
A massive battle against darkness or something occurs and it culminates in LITERALLY EVERYONE EXCEPT ARLE AND SATAN DYING! The world basically ended, Arle is dying, so Satan uses his world making powers to create the Puyo Puyo world where everyone is still alive and it’s almost always sunshine and rainbows.
Obviously you shouldn’t take my word as fact and please correct me if I made any mistakes.

You forgot to mention that the mega drive port of the arcade version adds in a second rotate button. This massively improves the gameplay. (The physical arcade machine only has one rotate button)
Edit: also super puyo puyo (and Kirby’s avalanche/ghost trap) has a debug option to use an early version of the offsetting rule (countering chains with your own)

Fascinating video; I haven't played any Puyo Puyo myself (just seen it via other RUclips videos), so I always assumed the original characters were... original, rather than being from a pre-existing RPG series from the same devs.
I can kinda see why they chose them, though, since that meant they not only gave them character designs to work with, but pre-existing personalities too, which is something that seems to have help set Puyo Puyo apart from other matching puzzle games for a long time.
I also assumed the series started during the 16-bit era either in the arcades or the Genesis, rather than the 8-bit era on the MSX and Famicom Disk System, so there's another assumption proven wrong.

Very informative and witty. I'm not sure if you coered what "puyo" means in Japanese. It's an adjective for soft, squishy, bouncy and it can even be an onomatopoeia as well. And in a common Japanese style, they string the same word together twice for a better effect.

I have never heard of the Kirby and Robotnik games before, and my friends and I loved Puyo Puyo when I was younger. I’m happy to message you the location of where I played it, but I’m not sure how useful that will be. It would have been early 2000s, but there were a lot of fairly old games there because it was a cheap arcade.

I still prefer the SEGA Allstars Tennis localized name for Puyo Puyo; Puyo Pop!
Puyo Puyo doesn't really say anything, other than that this game includes Puyo and Puyo alone, but Puyo Pop tells you that in this game you pop Puyos.
    It's genius

    • @joniivee
      @joniivee  2 года назад +3

I honestly kind of dug how they kept that name going for a few years. I know Minna De Puyo Puyo got localized as "Puyo Pop" and Puyo Puyo Fever became "Puyo Pop Fever".

On the topic of Puyo Puyo Arcade's localization, if you check the Japanese flyer for that release st the time, much like other Sega arcade games at the time that had localizations planned or available limitedly, there is in fact an English write-up on the game. Whether or not it's about the localization we all know I don't really remember, but considering the same happened for segasonic arcade, it seems real.
I'd imagine aside from what compile said about limited European release, it'd be for areas of Japan with large amounts of English speaking tourists.
Likewise, that "DO NOT USE OUTSIDE JAPAN" copyright warning games had back then being gone is probably just because, with international versions, they wouldn't really actually know who's using it and where necessarily

The reason Arle is featured in the art of Puyo MSX and NES is because the Puyos themselves are from Madou Monogatari.
Also only Madou 1, Madou SNES, and Madou A feature child Arle. Madou 2 and onwards have her aged up.
She does meet Satan as a child in Madou SNES, but he takes no interest in her in that game.

I know you said you didn't want to go over every single rerelease, but I feel like you missed out on a notable one:
There was a PlayStation 1 version of the game included in "Puyo Puyo BOX", which also includes Puyo Tsu and also a bunch of original game modes, such as a mini-RPG story.
And Puyo Puyo BOX itself was made available on the PS3 store in Japan, making it also playable on PS3 and Vita.

The way you say "Puyo Puyo" makes me think of the Poitter's Point (Poy Poy) series of party games from Konami. Think like an arena fighter, but you win based on fight choreography rather than defeating opponents.
Arle is definitely a hard name to pronounce. Puyo Puyo Tetris onwards, her name's pronounced "are-el" rather than "are-lee", like in Harley Quinn.
