    I’m gonna be honest,a huge reason why I got into the PPT scene(as a spectator) was 100% because of Schezo’s story in the English dub

    Tag once again revolutionising the Tetris scene by making actually good content.
    This was a legitimately great watch, kind of bizarre seeing a summary of all the events since I've seen all of this happen first hand someway or the other.
    Honestly I think PPT and even Modern Tetris in general could use more videos like this. You're doing good work as always Tag.

    Every once in a while I'll go back and watch the CEOtaku 2017 VODs and cringe a little at my commentary. The ending of the final round was the most hype thing ever and all I could manage was a dumbfounded giggle.

    neat, I remember a lot of this stuff happening, so it's cool to see it all documented in video form.
    tbh when I first found out that the stallwide meta was a thing, I was still super new to competitive tetris, and so I actually found the counterintuitive aspect of the gameplay really intriguing and fascinating.
    I first saw it happening on an amemiya stream and I was super confused about what was happening. (I asked around, and okeydokey explained it to me. I was like 'ohhhhhh!')
    I genuinely really enjoyed watching WPL PPT open 6 when it was happening. the negative and downer sentiment in chat put me off more than anything about the gameplay tbh. maybe I'm an outlier...

    • @ahiijny
      @ahiijny 2 года назад

      around the time PPT2 launched, I made a meme involving nichijou and 4-wide. I think a lot of people misunderstood my intent behind that
      I didn't want to mock PPT or the stalling meta, I wanted to be like "Y'ALL there are mind games in competitive tetris, THIS IS COOL" and also "there are fan games and official games that have creative ways of changing the meta, THIS IS ALSO COOL" and maybe "hey sega there are a lot of passionate ppl who don't like this meta (not me tho im not a competitive player) maybe you could do something about it pls? thx"

    • @ahiijny
      @ahiijny 2 года назад

      it's also worth remembering that the competitive side of tetris and PPT especially is still extremely niche, and things that are common knowledge to us are not obvious at all to the average spectator. it's easy to forget that if you've been here in this rabbit hole for a long time.
      for example, last year, in infexiousdc's restream of the Amemiya vs. Kazu match from Kemonomichi 4, I noticed that it isn't until about half an hour into the match that they finally understand where the silver blocks are coming from; they originally thought the silver blocks were point-based. and only after this did they realize that the random "slowdowns" were not random at all, but rather the two players intentionally stopping ("footsies" as they referred to it, drawing a fighting game analogy)
      I remember looking through the replies on my tweet regarding the stalling meta, and my favourite ones were the newcomers being curious about competitive tetris. This is the kind of energy I like to see.

    Great Video!
    Puyo Puyo Tetris will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember getting in to tetris through someone I worked with telling me about Tetris 99. I was enamored by the competitive gameplay and that lead me to watching T99 videos on youtube by Wumbo, and then of course PPT videos by Wumbo. I clearly had to pick up the game and experience the 1v1 version of competitive tetris. I was instantly hooked, and I would play a ton and watch a ton of videos. I remember the most influential video from when I started being a video of CEOtaku 2017 of Wumbo vs Ddr_Dan in swap mode. I instantly knew I wanted to train as hard as I could to get as good as those players.
    Fast forward two years and PPT has changed my life. It is probably my all time favorite game. I have probably 100x playtime the past two years to any other game besides PPC. I no longer play much tetris, about once or twice a month, but have become a frequent puyo player. I have unfortunately transitioned from playing on my switch, to playing on my PC, which has plenty of problems with matchmaking. The tournaments are getting better and more frequent, and I will also be attending WPL in august which I am super excited for! I am enjoying the new era of 32 second margin Puyo vs Tetris.

    great video tag, I learned a lot from it. I also wish you mentioned that in the kazu vs amemiya exhibition match, kazu beat amemiya’s 4w without 4w himself. may have given hope to some in the community that 4w is sorta counter-able (with some luck)

    Great overview!
    I want to briefly mention that Swap Mode, while still incredibly laggy on netcode in PPT2, is still surviving as a niche category offline, having taken place in Frosty Faustings in 2022 as the first big LAN post COVID years. There are also plans for Swap to be hosted for the WPL SoCal bracket as well.

    Great video. I hope that this will help revitalise the interests in the game.
    From what I can see, the Japanese PPT community is still very active in both games, but they are more or less detached from the remaining international playerbase. I believe Square One would have been a great tournament to connect the communities (with some high profile players like amemiya playing), but it sadly didn't happen.
    The future looks uncertain, but I do hope that the game will regain its popularity.

    P/S: I personally like the game, but I'm still annoyed by the netcode (Sega please!)

    I think the most fun I've had with ppt was at celtic throwdown 2019 being there with my friends and playing a game I love is just great
    my only real issue with ppt and tetris as a whole is that a majority of events are online, it's just not the same as being physically present for an event

    • @willowkay
      @willowkay 3 месяца назад

      A year late from the video's release, but this was one of my thoughts as well! I never ended up buying ppt2, and just went from ppt1 to te:c and never looked back. The regular game is already incredible, but bringing a major community figure on to help watch dev was a brilliant idea. NES has gotten a proper outlet and is much more accessible which is amazing even though i dont play classic. Zone battle is also something i love, the offense/defense strategy options it offers really reinforces good play on top of just speed, since one slip isnt necessarily an instant death sentence. Its also beautiful to watch, some of my friends who dont even play tetris enjoy watching tourneys with me.
      And ofc, combos got a nerf normally, and a bonus nerf with zone enabled to prevent zone 4wides from being too devastating. Although zone basically prevents stall in the first place a lot of the time.

    Great video tag! I’ve always kinda just played the game without looking into the competitive history behind it, quite fascinating.
    This is just my opinion as someone who has scripted video essays but never released them, but I think the pacing of the video is quite fast. I think maybe allowing visuals to linger on screen for a little longer and letting sentences linger in the air a little longer would make the pace feel more comfortable. I understand wanting to make an efficient product though, so you can definitely just ignore me if you think I’m talking out of my butt

  • @Riley_Lizard
    @Riley_Lizard 2 года назад +1

    Enjoyed the video tag.
    My two cents on something left out of the video,
    I do think the offline scenes of PPT1/PPT2 also play a factor in the present day. I know not a lot of the top players on Puyo or Tetris side entered these events but I do think they hold a solid level of importance. IMO it shows people are still willing to play the game locally even without the influence of “popular figures”.
    Events of CEO, Frosty Faustings, WNF, Switchfest ect. showed the game has interest even outside its niche online circle. Especially with E.Os offering places for the game to be run or to return due to general interest from people showing up but the appeal that game has. I think that is an important factor of the present day that gets left out. That shows there are more people to potential get involved and participate in the game
    Even though these scenes are not “heavily” involved due to the nature of offline and online interactions I think it is still notable. Even if the online scene of the game “crashes” offline players are still going to play no matter what.

    16:33 also i gotta defend some people here. you make it sound like they intentionally premeditated the act of streaming and then refunding the game as a stunt to trash the game. while it's undeniable that the effect was detrimental, I don't think it's fair to accuse some people of intentionally doing that; PPT2 did have a lot of problems at launch, and even someone genuinely wanting to give it a fair playtest could come away with a bad impression.
