- Today, Jonii is taking a trip to 2005, when Japan opened an official Pokémon theme park (or PokéPark) in Nagoya, including attractions like a Rayquaza themed rollercoaster and a PokéBall themed ferris wheel. Pack your bags and embrace your inner Defunctland, gamers. We're going.

i can't believe they made pikachu in real life, someone should give him a tie a baller bowler hat
pancake
True
They was a Pikachu plush like this I believe it was exclusive to the Pokémon centre in London
BALLER?!?!!??!
i can't tell if the joy expressed by you in this video is an ironic critique of corporatism's effect on children's media OR a genuine love letter to pokemon-themed products, and the best part is that the video works great either way
You forgot to mention, in the train ride, there's a part that has a bunch of Spindas, and one of them is shiny!
Hi, I went to this when I was in elementary school! My family is from Aichi so they took me in the summer. It was awesome, I remember riding the Rayquaza rollercoaster and the Latias/Latios ride. I still have special pokemon cards, a pen of the Mudkip ride, and maybe a map of the place? Thanks for unlocking a precious old memory that I had forgotten.
I feel like AZ at the end of X/Y but instead of waiting 5000 years for Eternal Flower Floette, instead it was waiting more than a decade for this kind of video.
PokePark is one of those things in Japan that had always fascinated me since I heard about it; Hell, I even got the promo Celebi card shown in this video for my collection. Why America never got anything like that honestly baffles me, but providing context into this once in a lifetime park really made my day. Seriously, thanks for making this.
Now if you’ll excuse me, Im gonna try to promote the crap out of this video on my socials
Side note, but I also noticed how the Pikachu hat looks extremely similar to the Pikachu hat seen in Pokemon Battle Revolution, so I’m guessing PBR decided to use that hat
Nice
I feel like a few of those music arrangements would drive a ride worker crazy after a several-hour shift
Seeing how heavily Gen 3 focused it was makes me wonder if they had Zangoose merchandise
im so, so glad someone finally did a deep dive on this. i was obsessed with it as a concept as a kid, but that was 5+ years after it was around; let alone in another country lmao. thanks so much for this
Stuff like this is why I'm stoked for Nintendo World. A Video Game themepark could legitimately be the only thing to drag me out to the West Coast.
Should have been in the EAST coast!
@@XSlimSxadyX Agreed. I was devastated when they announced it would be at Universal Hollywood instead of Universal Orlando.
@@NigelMelanisticSmith it’s coming to Orlando, but it’ll be at their new park in Florida
@@Taikofan04 really? That's great news, Orlando is a drive away from me. I guess that goes to show to not always listen to Leaks
@@NigelMelanisticSmith 2025 in Orlando, get ready!
The Lugia ride has Lugia surrounded by spinning cups. In game, Lugia is surrounded by spinning whirlpools.
24:17 a postmark is a stamp on a letter (like an ink stamp not a postage stamp) marking which post office a letter was delivered from. That means you could post someone a letter which says it was from the PokéPark. Some people collect them like normal postage stamps, and often when collectable stamp sets are ordered by mail they will have special collectable postmarks (like from Normandy Beaches for a special D-Day set).
Also, best hunch on the car is a Toyota Ist with some new headlamps. Toyota were a massive sponsor of the 2005 World Expo.
Ok that's enough being annoying for today, love you, bye.
It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to use more animatronics in their theme park. It would certainly have been exciting to visit the park and see these 3D moving pokemon as parts of rides and other attractions.
With that said, the fact there was even a PokePark is already great.
If they wanted to bring it back, they could probably be like six flags where there are multiple parks around america/the world with different rides for each park and themed lands.
I could see them investing in 1-3 big theme parks (1 for Japan, 1 for North America, and 1 for Europe or Australia)
Let's be real they'd just put all 3 in Japan lol
This really made me feel like a kid again. Thanks for the warm feelings
18:05 Mudkip Log Flume: Does not reference a racist movie
Splash Mountain (the most famous log flume ride): References a racist movie
Checkmate, non-Mudkip log flume rides
26:56 "- and enbys"
Yeah YEAH!
I just picked up an entire set of the pokemon pokepark tcg cards graded in mint condition. I stumbled upon this video to learn more about them. Thanks a ton!
I like that I have the rare memory of going to the park in the summer of 2005 in japan with my mother and being able to recall most of the rides and how I got around the height requirement. They also had carnival games like pushing Voltorb across rails to hit a button to win a stuffed animal. I got sets of coasters with the pokemon with their names and other things on it. Each ride you got on, you were given a sealed card related to the ride. Groundon VS Kyogre in bumper carts, the Ferris wheel gave you a lucario card, the pokemon train gave you a card that had all the mascots on it. They even sold Rayqyuza hats in the shape of the pokemon and it kinda wrapped around your head with its tail. There was also food themed after pokemon, and it was a lot of walking for how big the park was.
Also, at the end of the last few days of the park. I was able to watch them take it down over time since I passed by the park near a rail line that was only a few hundred feet away.
My best friend growing up was Japanese, and he visited the park, and brought back some merch for my brother and I! There was also a really big guidebook that he had that showed off practically everything in the park in great detail, which I remember combing over despite not knowing Japanese.
Great video, nice trip down memory lane. Always wanted to go there. :(
i’m legitimately so sad something like this will probably never happen again. I WANT TO GO TO THE POKEPARK DAMMIT
Btw if you didn’t notice, there is a sign for the “Find Mew” animated short behind the Rayquaza coaster, along with the Madagascar poster
17:00 this actually IS from the Anime! It’s the GSC version of the title theme, they still use this version pretty often too!
your videos are so great and i can’t wait to get through this one you always pick some interesting topics like this
I wish with all my might that I could resist being triggered by him saying skarmory was a hoenn pokemon. Skarmory's debute was in johto. That being said, I NEED THIS PARK IN MY LIFE. Thank you for spotlighting this!
Is this the Japanese pokemon theme park that no longer exists that gave you that downloadable fishing minigame for your DS, or am I thinking of another Japanese pokemon theme park that no longer exists?
The very same.
Your channel is wonderful and brings me nostalgia
Thank you so much for this I’ve always been curious about the pokepark! So thank you for all of this information about it
Hey, I just found out about the channel like yesterday but you’re quickly becoming one of my favorite creators. Everything you’ve made has been so amazing and radical!! I can’t wait to see more from ya, goober. Have a great day
Absolutely love this video! I have a pretty big collection of random pokepark merch, crazy how hard some of it is to come by
Hey JonII! I really wish I had known you were putting this video together. I was lucky enough to go to the Pokepark with my family in 2005, and would have loved to given you some firsthand context to the attractions. Watching this video brought up a lot of good memories of me and my family! Thank you for putting the time into making this!!
That Rayquaza ride hits different. Awesome use of his long boi shape.
not sure if you noticed, but on the carousel, some of the clouds in the sky are mareep.
Okay, the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino joke in the middle of a Pokemon video made me lose it. What a specific intersection of references.
2:48 The subtle Tranq Base reference 😍
Thank you for this. My inner childhood self is happy 😭😭 I have been curious and hyper-fixated about this park as a child. Seeing the toaster-quality videos and merch made me wonder what happened and why no one ever covered this topic. 😭😭
12:58 I’d correct you saying that Skarmory was introduced in Gen 2, but then again I used to think it was Gen 3 too since they’re regionally in Hoenn as well
Yoooo it's so cool to see a video about the Pokepark, I actually visited in 2005 and still have a bunch of the merch you showed! (I even have a Pokepark DS although it sadly doesn't work anymore) This video was an amazing nostalgia trip, I remember the park being really fun although the rides were obviously aimed towards younger children so I only rode a few of them (I was 14 at the time), but especially the Altomare Gondola, the ferris wheel and the log flume were good fun. It was overall an amazing experience and I'm really happy and grateful to have been lucky enough to see it at the height of my Pokemon obsession. I'd love to see them bring something like this back one day , I need to try and dig out my old photos if they still exist lol
I know the GBA Pokemon games had their own special version of multiboot for data imports, so it's not unreasonable to figure that DS Download Play may have been extended with that feature.
Just found you today from this video and I'm absolutely in love with your sense of humor and pace in the narration and editing. And it's such a fun topic! Not to mention the nonbinary call-out and that your Twitter feed had someone marked green with Shinigami Eyes. Looking forward to going through your channel
Really well made video. Wasn't originally super interested in the subject matter but your presentation made me interested.
Just like the GA-! Oh this had me in stitches! I love your editing style, your narration, and how much research this must have took is applaudable! But hearing you say "dai-SU-ki" just killed me 😂 "U" in Japanese is usually very subtle, sometimes not even pronounced at all, and often the syllabic stress is put on the first syllable. It's "DAI-ski" basically, just means "to really like/love"
Yoooooooo Pokemon Sunday. I remember lurking the Gamefaqs Pokemon boards when those aired because SOMETIMES, they would show like, three seconds of footage for Pokemon Black and White or the starter silhouettes. Most of the time though they showed nothing
I really enjoyed the video, I hope your channel gets a lot more recognition.
Going there was the biggest dream of 10 year old me. The German Pokémon magazine even said that at one point there had been plans to open a PokéPark in Berlin. I had so much hope, but deep down I knew that it would never happen. I wonder if they just made that up xD
You have blessed us with another upload :,D
I got the 5 PokePark boxed rides you highlighted! Also great video - pokepark is my favorite set.
Really comprehensive video. Awesome to see a video a video about this. I was determined to got o this when I was a kid, sadly that was and is impossible. This would've made my life when I was younger, and honestly even now.
I always love seeing your videos! It was so fun hearing about this theme park! :)
Also I might be wrong, but is this your first sponsor? If so, that's awesome! Congratulations!!!! :D
Wow! Please keep making rare Pokémon history videos. I’m a 90’s kid with a strange fascination with lost media and Pokémon history. Your Pokémon mini docs are entertaining and the commentary is really funny. Nice work!
This video and the Pokémon VHS video are RUclips gems.
Im currently living in Japan, buying up every vintage Pokémon merchandise I can get my hands on. Thanks for the nostalgic inspiration to keep my adventure on course.
I've got two of the Pokepark Latios cards shame we will never have any of those in english or other languages. Having that diversity for my card collection means a lot to me.
As a coaster fan and a Pokemon fan, it greatly saddens me I'll never get to ride Rayquaza.
Holy shit! What a great video! Thanks!
I remember reading about Poképark on Bulbapedia and wishing that I had been able to go in some way despite having been like 2 years old when it existed. Honestly in the top 3 things I would do with time travel
BRO how does this not have more views. Constant jokes subscribing for sure.
11:42 Gotta mention that while the song was sung my Maddie Blaustein, the English adaptation was written by Carter Cathcart, Meowth's voice since 2006. But I'm sure ya knew that!
15:15 Also WHAT! Sorry, I'm doing this in real time, but it's always surreal when you pop up in someone's video. I wish I knew where that rendition came from. Though I can say that the rendition at 17:05 sounds like it's from the Johto anime.
36:54 And hey, that bit in the intro with Arbok and Geodude was used in the "World of Pokemon" segment in Destiny Deoxys. I always remembered how out of place the 3D looked, but I had no idea that's where it came from!
I always forget about Carter writing those lyrics! I think of it as a cool passing the torch type moment considering he took up the role a few years later. Also had no idea about that little clip being used in the World of Pokemon segment, that's honestly pretty cool it's not exclusive to this lost short.
@@joniivee Yeah, for Polka O Dolka, it definitely sounds like something his Meowth would sing - though he also started doing script adaptations for the show with the fifth season, so he was already in Meowth’s head by then.
And I’m not sure why they’d use stuff from the 3D short for the movie, but maybe they were running low on time or something.
He was also the voice of Fergus in the first Pokemon movie, the trainer with the Gyrados, as well as Gary Oak
babe wake up new jonii just dropped
I was able to find quite a bit of info on this park, but I speak/read Japanese… It’s not unusual for there to be one-time mini theme parks inside another theme park or exhibit, etc. Universal Studios Japan does it every year (I have seen Monster Hunter, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, and Shingeki No Kyojin attractions with dedicated rides, shows, and gift shops at USJ). Sanrio had a traveling Hello Kitty mini park we went to. I’ve seen a lot of Pokémon rides at zoos where I lived in Ehime, some that were in this video. I’m sure Japan will do something similar again with Pokémon and a mini theme park concept.
oh my god tranquility base reference? immediate subscribe i love you
Man, I remember binge watching SGT.Frog ALL the time on Netflix when I was in Highschool, I thought it was dope.
I've known about Pokemon Park as far back as 2006/2007, so it's about time nearly 17 years after the park closed that someone's made a video about it. And yet I was 9 when it happened in Japan. I remember as a kid why America didn't do the same as Japan did in 2005, and to this day I've yet to see an answer why.
You have to wonder why its taken till now for them to "consider" on doing a Pokemon theme park despite the franchise being the big hit it is today.
idk if this was a serious inquiry but Meowths guitar is candy apple red (imitation) Fender Stratocaster.
12:59 UHM ACKSHULLY Skarmory is a Johto Pokemon doe
J-…JUST LIKE IN THE GAME!!!!
It killed me 😂
It gets me every time he yells, “JUST LIKE IN THE GA-!”
24:15 - No, postmark was likely correct. The postmark is what the post office stamps over the stamp to show that it has been used. They usually show what location the mail has been mailed out of, and sometimes that can include special locations. For instance, in Casey, Illinois, you can find the world's largest mailbox. If you put your outgoing mail in said large mailbox, it'll get a special "World's Largest Mailbox" postmark printed over your stamp, which shows the receiver that the mailpiece was sent from that unique location.
So PokéPark must've had their own such special postmark.
16:35 "horses wouldn't make sense for Pokemon"
Ponyta and Rapidash would like a word with you.
26:58 thank you for including me 🥹
i am subscribing to you solely on the basis that you mentioned sgt frog. it is THE anime ever
On God those Skitty ears look adorable and I need them please
4:12 Bobobo and Sgt. Frog are god-tier anime
Jonii agrees! Nice to see another person of culture
Considering Pokemon's popularity and how much money they make from merchandise, I'm absolutely baffled there is not now a larger park akin to Disneyland
Yeah except I'd gladly ditch Disneyland to get into the Pokepark.
@@josephrowe849 100% yes.
Loving the squid girl images you are using
This was outstanding
It’s amazing how nostalgia makes me think that the sun hit different those days the world was a much brighter place pokemon will always live in my memories with me
Can’t wait to see the new parade at Universal this year that features Pokémon
Got a new sub from me, I love your sense of humour.
4:11 Keroro Gunso cameo.
💫I was there in japan 2005, it was from 3.18-9.25. Ima was able to obtain a Medal, and an Blue- Nintendo-DS Limited with the Pokepark-2005 Logo. There was like Stations with different Cards on the Map ima still have, the food also was very Cool there...It was a Good Time there🎶
What attraction should we give to Lugia, probably the most powerful Pokémon? I know... Spinning teacups!
They had one in Taiwan too, I remember going when I was super young, felt like a fever dream
I remember how the safari zone worked. The poke balls seemed like NFC tags and you could catch pokemon going over certain zones (grass, water, etc)
Finger puppets triggered a core memory for me
IT'S FINALLY HERE
Could you archive all the videos and image you found for preservation purposes?
Streak of Weezer references in Jonii videos as of July 26th, 2022: 2
The Pikacar was actually a Toyota Ist (or as us Americans called it the Scion XA).
33:43 the information is Dunsparce.
I'll see myself out.
Pikachu go spinny in circle, Jonii happy. :)
Jonii talk about about long-since relevant topic, me happy. :)
Man this park looks so cool
If my 10 year old self had somehow visited the park when it was open, my brain would have exploded from how awesome it was. If my current 28 year old self visited the park, my brain would melt from nostalgia since gen 3 is my fav. Overall not looking great for my brain situation.
Great video m8 👍
Only thing i remember about Peach Girl is Momo started my love of gyaru, but that's important so i can't let the slander go un....commented on. Shoutouts to School Rumble though
Another banger.
Another awesome park I would've loved as a kid and never got to visit. Mark it right next to the many Sega Worlds and that Nickelodeon Studios one from around the same time.
21:32 That the act of just sitting can be this damn cute.
I can only imagine a lot more of the information about this park is in japanese on more local media
I have to translate the official documentary some time, it even includes a couple seconds of that press conference.
The Lugia teacups didn't let me fly off the ride, 0/10
I remember Pokepark back in the days! I always wondered what happened to it.
the Pikachu car appears to be a 2000s toyota voltz (fitting cause Pikachu) this car was also sold in the U.S as the Pontiac vibe and Toyota matrix
That shot of Meowth’s head popping out of the screen in the 3D movie made me laugh.
Those teacups were boats…being stuck in a whirlpool is genius.😍
