  • Sometimes Jonii wants to play a game but then they find that it isn't practical. Maybe, like Tokimeki Memorial, it's stuck in Japan. Maybe, like SegaSonic Popcorn Shop, it's an arcade machine that's difficult to accurately emulate. Or maybe, like Super Mario 128, it never came out. Join them as they explore a bunch of these games; you might even learn about one yourself!

Another possible category for these types of games would be digital-only games that have been discontinued. For example: Super Mario 35, a game that was available to purchase digitally for about a year before Nintendo decided to eviscerate it off the face of the Earth.

You see in the japanese version duo wasn't in the game unless you won a specific memory card from a magazine promotion which you could only enter by 100% the story mode of battle and chase (beating the dark racers, getting all the spare parts AND the super secret parts hidden in the courses).

Recently I have been working on a concept for a dragon ball games retrospective and though I intend to discuss every game I can to the best of my ability I know I won't be able to acquire everything especially arcade titles and super obscure mobile games. It's insane to me that games people spent years playing like mmos and mobile games can just disappear forever if improperly preserved. It makes me all the grateful for emulations, unofficial servers, and fan translations. Now if we could just find one of the vectorman contest winner carts.

Like the new avatar's many different expressions! Anyway a game I really hope will get a translation someday is a Dreamcast game, Segagaga. It's a very meta game about Sega not doing well financially... Oh it's also an RPG, so that sounds fun!
As for the game that you can sorta play, but isn't translated, I once found a DS game based on the Sgt. Frog anime. It's developed by Bandai Namco, which is very obvious, because the game is straight up a Klonoa game with a few more characters. There's also a little minigame that's an homage to a classic Namco arcade game - Mappy. Sadly the game only came out in Japan, so it's pretty obscure nowadays. But I think it's one of the best 2D platformers I've played on the DS. I highly recommend it.

This is a little different since it's an indie game and not a big budget Nintendo game, but there's a Japanese Horror RPG called Utahonotatari (plus its sequel) that has never gotten an official or unofficial translation, but has gained a decent cult following over the years. The sequel notably has an eerie image of a corpse as a glitch easter egg, which is the main reason people know about and want to play these games. Due to its mostly underground following, and the fact it was made in Wolf RPG Editor (which doesn't have many accessible methods of translating games made in it), no one has translated either of the games.

An interesting thing to explore and it is certainly a wonderful feeling when you can finally experience a game that you've known of but never got to play. It was a true blessing to finally be able to Panel De Pon thanks to it's release on the Switch, which I had never been able to before, despite being a big fan of Lip and her Puzzle League series.
0:58 - Wait; is that a School Rumble game? If not, them I'm sure the art is by the same mangaka as the characters look very familiar to those in School Rumble.
3:12 - An interesting thing to consider (the programming/coding) with fan-translations outside of just translating the language and conveying actions/customs that might not make sense. I don't see such an element get brought up too often.
8:15 - Are we talking purely story wise or gameplay wise? It's an interesting debate, as I could have always tracked down Tetris Attack which shared it's gameplay with Panel De Pon and yet it was the styling and characters that I wanted to experience with Panel De Pon. That's a much larger regional differences, whereas smaller regional differences such as Ristar's different endings don't make a huge difference outside of preference (oddly enough, the western version with Ristar having a Dad I feel works better).
9:12 - The lack of trackball availability is the same reason that we have never had a home port of SegaSonic the Hedgehog arcade game. I feel, even though it wouldn't be exact, it would be nice to have a version available on modern systems to at least experience it in some form rather than not at all. In the case of arcade games, a lot of the intended experience is already lost when converting it from the social scene of an arcade to the more isolated solo/small-group experience of the home.
19:49 - Wait; there is a bonus game I can play by connecting my GBA to Billy Hatcher!? Does it require any extra hardware? If not, I'll have to try that out. Just need to find the GBA to Gamecube adapter.
23:02 - In bring up cancelled games and Nintendo, my thoughts immediately went to the Gamecube Kirby game. We got elements of it in Kirby's Adventure Wii, but I still wonder about the original Gamecube title. Then again, one could ponder about how games and cancelled features of them that would have changed how the game would have been significantly. My brother would be quick to mention the original plans for Spore and I've long thought about the steady ageing mechanic that was at one point considered for Wind Waker.
Another thing to consider on the topic of games you can't play is the constant updating nature of games these days. MMO's in particular get updates overtime that not only adds new content but also changes many key elements. I've noticed a similar thing happen with fighting games through it's many balance and character updates, resulting in older versions being either lost or incredibly hard to access.

    • @joniivee
      @joniivee  Год назад +1

Thanks for the detailed comment! I don't have answers/replies to everything but I am happy to say
      1) gameplay and story are both aspects of the experience that I think regional differences can sort of muddy. Small things like, as you said, the difficult of translating some customs or cultural details from one language to another, or other stuff like some NES games being made harder in the US or a games backstory being changed qualify in my mind in some way. I think with gameplay differences, you can still *play* the game on some level though so long as the text isn't a huge component
      2) that is indeed a School Rumble game! I don't know the name offhand but it's on the PSP. You can play as Tenma or Harima and I believe I'm playing as Tenma in that footage

[The following information is taken from Hudson Soft's website:
"The Tengai Makyo series was conceived and produced by Ouji Hiroi. The first game in the series, Tengai Makyo Ziria, was released in 1989...as the world's first major RPG on CD-ROM. At a time when most thought CD-ROMs were a poor medium for games, Tengai Makyo Ziria integrated features that couldn't be put on other media, from large maps to animation, real-voice narration, and CD-quality music. With a score from Ryuichi Sakamoto and an all-star cast of narrators, this epoch-making title revolutionized the role-playing game. Set in the fictional Japanese world of Zipangu, the game brought adventure, romance, comedy, and drama together in a single, sprawling storyline. In addition to the main games, the series also featured fighting action games featuring characters from the RPG. The main RPG series was originally conceived in three parts...The final installment of the original series, Tengai Makyo III: Namida...was stopped due to development costs and hardware limitations..."]
This is the big one for me.
Everything Lunar and FF7 got credit for, they did first. And almost nobody in the English speaking world has even heard of it, beyond a single well regarded Neo Geo fighting game.

There's a beta version of the original NBA Jam where you can actually play as Michael Jordan. Only 4 copies of the PCB exist, and 3 of them belong to Gary Payton.

One of the annoying things is when they release a game in English but only in certain regions, especially for older consoles, where you then have to pay to import the game _and_ pay to mod the console so that you can _play_ the import.
Another annoying example is when games get translated but have content cut, or the translation just sucks because it's essentially a rewrite (e.g. Fire Emblem Fates).

I'm not sure how interested ppl will be, because it's a mobile game but I'm gonna suggest looking into Afterl!fe: The sacred kaleidoscope. It was a semi visual novel/card raising game, with suprisingly well written characters and interesting world building that got shut down barely half a year after it was released in English. You play as a girl who's the manger of 20 grim reapers, and who has the ability to sense angry spirits that you need to guide to the...er...afterlife. I'm definitely not still bitter about it's closure...not at all...

Rayman 4 was a project in development by Phoenix studios and ubisoft in I believe 2005. The game would’ve been a 3d platformer on the ps2, going back to rayman’s roots with locations and characters from the first game. However this game was cancelled when ubisoft heard about the then upcoming wii and it’s motion controls. Pheonix was then dropped from the project and a new vision was created. This new game would still be a 3d platformer but this time would use motion controls heavily and have minigames thrown about here and there. And it would feature a new set of characters created by Michael ancel called the “raving rabbids”. The rabbids would be the primary enemies of the game and rayman would have to do things like dress up as various icons and dance to distract the rabbids and there would also be a creature taming mechanic in the game. Development was going well until someone from nintendo stepped in to check on the project and told ubisoft that they would not have enough time to make a platformer and release the game in time for the wii’s launch and holiday 2006. So the platformer was scrapped entirely and turned into the minigame collection we now know as “Rayman Raving Rabbids”, launching on wii in november 2006 then being ported to ps2, xbox 360 and pc.

A list of games I played at one point that are no longer playable due to being delisted or no longer supported tech:
That one Speed Racer browser game based on the original anime that was in 3D
A futuristic racer based on various candy brands that also had a separate version with vehicles from the Wachowski Speed Racer movie
That weird Just Dance clone for iPad that SEGA released around 2013/2014
    Jet Set Radio on iOS/Android
The Sonic level creator for SEGA’s online game service from around 2008 - 2011
UB Funkeys (at least the online portion I think)

I used to have all of the DLC for Real Steel on PS3, but I've unfortunately lost the DLC due to license expiration. The PS3 versions of LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2 are also now unplayable in their launch forms. I'm just glad that PlayStation consoles are easily jailbreakable, since it makes archival much easier.

As somebody who's played Super adventure rockman to completion i can safely say that... the game isn't worth playing even WITH a translation mostly due to how unforgiving it gets after the end of disc 1.
Seriously there's some encounters that are ludicrously hard without a weapon you can PERMANENTLY MISS in disc 2... and if you do get it you'll enter a war of attrition because it just makes it so you take 1hp worth of damage no matter what!
And don't get me started on Ramoon's phase 2 which is on the dictionary next to the term "Drawn out"... whats worse is that Ra Moon is one of 4 bosses that doesn't give you a chance to continue if you kick the bucket and the last save point is back at the boss BEFORE phase 1... so have fun rewatching 20 minutes of cinema!

Honestly, the question of regional diffrences isn't even a question. It's just a statement. Trying to work it out is more often than not just a confusing mountain of oof and it's best left alone. I won't ever be able to play Mother 2 and Yu-gi-oh Duel Monsters 5 Expert 1 in english and especially other languages, but Earthbound and Yu-gi-oh The Eternal Duelist Soul are still here(Though the mentioned Yu-gi-oh game still isn't in other languages, lol).
We are not really talking original intention anyways, outside of some gamescripts having really terrible translation that desperately needs to be redone. Because if we were, then we would have to include the question of bugs. Should bugs that were fixed in localization stay fixed or be re-broken? Should ones that were never fixed be, if they completely screw up the developer intention? And then there is the behemoth of all of these topics combined. The myth, the legend, the meme: The first two JP-only Pokemon games, Red and Green. Some of the most broken videogames of all time, and also historically obnoxious to make a proper attempt at a translation for, to the point where someone instead decided to just not deal with it and remade Green in the rom of Blue. How to even approach that mess?

8:14 I would personally say Ace Combat 3 is a bar that clearly demonstrates that point, where the English version is very far removed from the original.
Both the original and international versions have the same gameplay for the most part, but the story content is so different between regions that it really does feel like playing two different games. At least with this, there is a translation patch that lets non-japanese speakers play the developers' original vision.
*And also, thanks for understanding the supremacy of Hikari Hinomoto, more people need to know about it, even if Miyuki Kotobuki is superior-er*
