Super Monkey Ball Jr. - An Honest Attempt

- There's no better way to follow up a critically and commercially successful game than a poorly thought out handheld conversion. In 2002, Sega did just that with Super Monkey Ball Jr. for the Gameboy Advance, which gies through the trouble of replicating the main game as well as three mini games, Bowling, Fight, and Golf.
Join me, Jonii, as I take you through the world of fake 3D, low frame rates, and impressively replicated lens flares.
With the help of Ninjastar Reviews and Lvaneede, we also take a look at the conceptually similar N-Gage port of the original Super Monkey Ball.

If there’s an super monkey ball jr
Where’s super monkey ball sr
I think what they were really trying to say is that the only thing that can classify as “Super Monkey Ball Sr.” is the original.
Then again, according to SMB Wiki, the Super Monkey Ball members (with the exception of Baby) were said to be approximately 3 decades old (making them Gen-Xers)! XD
On the Original Gameboy
He's dead from Banana Overdose.
Dead i guess
Handheld/Portable systems have smaller games than those on a TV Console (which includes the GameCube version of Super Monkey Ball).
So there you have it.
Pleasure working with you, it was fun talking about the Monkey Ball game everyone pretends doesn't exist.
Absolutely! I really appreciate your help on this video and I love to dig up oddities like the two in this video.
I'd love to work with you again in the future, so definitely hmu if you're interested. :)
What game?
@@susiehaltmann3342bro
Glad someone covered this game in 2019, but I must say the video is very impressive for a small channel. I'll definitely pop In to see your review on SMB2!
Thanks for saying so! In addition to wanting to cover all the Monkey Ball games eventually, one of the goals of my channel is to bring attention to things that people aren't really talking about, so I'm happy to have fulfilled that with this video.
Thanks for the comment! Looking forward to dropping that SMB2 video in a few months. I'll be talking about plenty of other stuff in the meantime.
@@joniivee I've got notifications on and I'm looking forward to your new videos! Cheers man.
@@TheBossBabyReal That's great to hear, very happy that you enjoyed the video and I'm eager to put out more content you'll enjoy in the future. :) Cheers.
Commented when 666 views.
Maybe you can make a video ranking the Super Monkey Ball games 👀
That sounds like a fun idea for when I've finished reviewing everything! Me and my friends on the EiEi Podcast did a Monkey Ball tier list a year ago but I admittely had pretty limited experience on the franchise when we did that.
@@joniivee Wow, you’re alive!
Haha yeah! I've mostly been doing streams and uploading informal content for March and April. Big plans for May :P
Oh my gosh, I did not expect 2CU here at all, Vail! 😳
Im glad I could supply footage for this video. It was fun playing the game again to unlock all the minigames.
Absolutely! Like I said in the end card, I think you're the only person who has ever bothered capturing footage of that Monkey Target minigame, so I'm very grateful for that.
Thanks again for your help. :)
Literally the only person with Monkey Target footage out there. Just a legend
RUclips? Recommending me a small RUclipsr that’s really good? Covering a game thats not often covered? What is this madness?
Hope that wasn’t a fluke. This channel needs subscribers.
Wow! Thanks a ton for the kind words, it's really cool that this actually got recommended to you. :) Out of curiosity, where did it show up? Just your home page?
The quality on this video is outstanding! Great work! I can't believe you only have 50 subs. Hope your channel grows a lot in the near future!
Thanks for saying so and thank you for watching! :D
I was obsessed with this game as a kid and my first Monkey Ball. Now I can't wait to buy Banana Mania on the Switch in october!
Same, this was the only monkey ball I've ever played. I enjoyed Jr, so if it sucks so hard, I should definitely play a real monkey ball game. And it's a relief to learn that the game is just really hard to control so I'm not as bad as I thought I was, lmao
"The original Monkey ball slowly eases you into more and more difficult stages"
*Flashbacks of Expert Level 7 (Exam C)*
definitely an exception to that rule lmao
Extremely impressive for being on the GBA. A system with very limited 3D capabilities. I'd also say it's a better game than Banana Blitz on the Wii. That was pretty disappointing after the excellent super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 games on the GameCube.
Yeah, Banana Blitz on the Wii...not exactly a winner. :P I have nothing but respect for Jr from a technical perspective so I totally agree with you there!
I don’t get the hate for banana blitz. It probably started the decline but it’s a decent game in its own right unlike most of what followed.
Banana splitz has its fans too from what I’ve heard
@@callinater6133 That's the thing. Banana Blitz is just "decent". They could have made it so much better. The GBA Monkey Ball, on the other hand, did something very impressive on hardware, which was essentially built for 2D portable gaming.
@@videogameobsession I know. But I don’t think blitz deserves its reputation as being the worst in the series. It started the decline sure but it wasn’t the culmination of the decline.
I suppose it’s easier to list blitz as the example because it seems to be more representative of its era as opposed to one of its iterative successors like step and roll.
@@callinater6133 Do people think Blitz is the worst in the series? I'd say that title belongs to SMB Adventure. Where Sega took everything fun about the game....and threw it out the window.
Sega should really just release a remastered collection of SMB 1 & 2 for modern consoles. Including: super responsive 60Hz - 120Hz (fps) support, online co-op, raytracing effects, and maybe a VR mode. If they are going to bring back SMB again, they'd better bring their best.
I played this game, gonna say, if you’re playing this on a system with a GBA emulator, and also an analog stick, it’s a great game! I’ve played this game on the 3DS for almost 26 hours now
I find myself agreeing, I enjoyed it a lot more with a gamecube controller
Great video and top-notch editing. It was awesome to see the ngage version covered in so much depth
Thanks a ton! I didn't want to leave any stone unturned so I was really happy Ninjastar ended up being down to help me. Glad you enjoyed it!
I thought nothing could beat the first Monkey Ball video.... I was wrong.
I'm glad you thought so haha.
So the note for me to take away is that angry Jonii = funnier :p
You're one of the most underrated RUclipsrs ever! Keep up the great work! 😏
This is one of my favourite videos. Subbed
Love your videos and I hope you get big. I will watch the smb 2 video
Your videos have great quality! Although I was never lucky enough to have super monkey ball, or even Jr. I eventually got to play them, and I love the games so much, only a couple are bad games in the series, and Jr is a great attempt to capture the magic the first 2 games had..
That Discord bit is gold
7:08 thank you for the help. i was stuck on that level for 20 years
If I remember correctly, Monkey Bowling has each character having different control and power meter speeds
How do you have less subscribers then me!? This channel has much more quality, i’m subbing
This needs more views it's so high quality
I would play this back in the day... Controls were good enough since movement snaps into one of who knows how many angles it allows, instead of full freedom - that's why going through skinny straight paths are easy.
Really enjoyed this video😂 just bout to replay SMBD on my Xbox
Gameboy Advance is the best handheld console no comment after that
This was in a time when EVERY game had a manual, so the game did in fact tell you about holding a or b to either speed up or slow down. At the time, it was my only means of playing Monkey Ball (grew up without tv), and I loved it. Played it for so many hours... Now I finally decided to get the collection on Switch, because I was always confused which one would be best, older or newer, adventure or just standard series... Fun fact: it was delivered just now, literally.
relative to the console it runs on, i would say it's actually a very good game (i've played it quite a lot around 2018 and it's really fun)
lol i had the same reaction when i discovered the a+b controls especially in regards to level 8.
Jonii I can tell you’re teasing at a Sonic N review with that N-Gage version section.
I like the editing, its quite good. however, im confused why the focus of the video went straight to the Ngage version of Super Monkey Ball that is different game from Super Monkey Ball Jr? This is a review for Jr not a comparison of the 2..
My thought process behind including that in this video is that I wanted to cover the series comprehensively but I was unable to do a full video on the N-Gage game. I thought it would be a good idea to include it in this video because, while they are not the same game, they are quite similar.
I loved this one and beat all levels.. eventually
If you ever play this again, use the "blocky mode" cheat
It looks terrible but the game runs faster.
I have this game and played it a lot as a child. Never was able to clear the Expert or Master stages, however.
This video is hilarious and pretty good at the same time, gotta say.
As someone who has a couple of Monkey Ball games, I never knew Jr. ever existed.
theres a speed up button on the gba hope this helps with adv 9
Hearing someone say the GBA was a bad console made me want to fight them.
Like Baby Pac-Man, the "Jr" part of this title makes it sound like an easier/"kiddie" version of Super Monkey Ball...but oooooh boy it is MUCH harder with only a D-pad and not the nice hair precision moves you can make with the GC's control stick.
this game is actually pretty fun especially for the gba it’s cool
i enjoyed it. it is important to me because of playing it in my childhood and spending a lot of time trying to get good at a very difficult game to play, at least in my memory. just my opinion.
but that advanced level nine...
IMPOSSIBLE
@@mkdoz Ugh, it is super rough! I didn't manage to beat it until I found out about the trick where holding A speeds you up and holding B slows you down.
@@joniivee OMG thanks i need to try that.
Absolutely! My buddy Ninjastar (who provided the N Gage segment of this video) brought it up randomly while we were discussing the game and it blew my mind. I bring it up briefly in this video but I didn't have the time to completely rework the video with that knowledge.
Happy to help you!
Isn’t Super monkey ball jr. just Super monkey ball 1 on the GBA?
pretty much
@Ninjastar Compass Oh
It's surprising they ported the game on GBA but the cross-direction doesn't make it justice.
EDIT: You know what they can do? Add gyroscopic from WarioWare Twisted and Yoshi Topsy Turvy!
Despite it's poor graphics (especially when compared to SMB1 on the GameCube), I still find it so hard to believe that SMBJr is actually a GBA game! Why? Because very few other (if there's even any) GBA games feature 3D movements in Gameplay! If the GBA was actually capable of handling 3-dimensional gameplay this whole time (at least as of 2002), then Mario Kart Super Circuit should've been developed a year later and take advantage of using those capable 3D engines, that is unless it was the 8-player racing chaos that led it to exceeding it's limitations...
I see my Five Nights style Aiai when you said "THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT"
Yo what, YOU MADE THAT?
that is an absolutely legendary image
@@joniivee Thanks a bunch! I just discovered your channel and I like what I'm seeing so far!
@@ultrakirbyfan100 ofc! And that's really nice to hear, thanks :)
@@joniivee Sure thing! If you have Discord, I can direct you to a couple of Monkey Ball themed servers
@@ultrakirbyfan100 I'd love that! I think I'm in one or two but they're pretty inactive.
Also 5:03 I never understood why it's NOT A FLAT RAMP like on the GameCube......... Like, they wanted save at least TWO TRIANGLES instead, for what, framerate??? I mean even if it did, framerate on Jr. isn't consistent as is. But at the same time, the GBA isn't an 80s desktop hardware trying to render polygons, fucking please.
This and Dinotopia were my first GBA games.
This was an actual attempt at cramming all of that into a handheld console.
You might wanna see the N-Gage for some actual disappointment (unless you already did).
All this talk about Monkey Ball, any chance you'll talk about the commercials? I ask because everytime someone says "Monkey Ball," I think of that commercial with adults dubbed with kid voices talking about how "this monkey is so fast, I can hardly even control him" for Super Monkey Ball 2.
I was actually part of a video on my friend Ninjastar Compass's channel recently where we watched through basically every Monkey Ball commercial and ranked them! That one was a favorite of ours.
@@joniivee cool, I'll have to look it up
I used to have an N-Gage when I was in high school when they were new. I only had tony hawk's pro skater on it though, which played like a dream on the phone surprisingly. I had no idea there was a speed up button on Jr. for GBA emulator.. so I did that one leap of faith stage by having to use the up and down platform to get enough speed, super annoying. I did all the beginner and advanced + extra stages for both before I watched this video and realized there was a button to speed up.. really weird they added that.
I, straight up, split my Gameboy SP in half out of anger because of this game.
I loved it
Honest attempt perfect description. Gameboy Advance wasn't a bad console all jokes aside.
Ok I’m a couple minutes in but the soundtrack slaps
Im about to snap kid alright, ive had it literally to WASP-12b and back with you and your good youtube.com video uploads you understand me squirt dont make me act up
Dude I beat this game when I was 10 I loved the game maybe cuzz I never played the first
Press A to roll faster.
Press B to roll slower.
That's all I have to say.
EDIT: Snap, you mentioned that right after I posted the comment.
The first monkey ball game i played was the one on the n gage lol
actually, you could've used the A and B buttons to control the monkey's speed
I had this. It was hard. I wasn't good at it.
Lovely old job!
Hey, thank you for saying so. :D
Yo I was watching your video on splicing while I was taking a short break editing this video
Cheers pal!
I’m 90% certain there’s a code for this game to increase the frame rate but drops the resolution.
Damn that’s an unfortunate impediment, great info though
idk Castlevania aria of sorrow was pretty tight
Isn't that a 2D game tho? :p
Your voice is like super attractive 🥰
The reason I found your video is because I can't get past advanced level 9 either rip
OOF not just me then. I'd recommend trying to speed up with the A button but it's still tough.
3DSage should remake this...
