    My theory on the laser weapons in fallout is actually quite simple... They're not actual lasers.
    I actually first thought of this when I was using the laser musket in Fallout4. I mean, how exactly do you charge light by storing it in a glass cylinder that is CLEARLY see-through, and therefor absolutely worthless at holding light inside of it?!
    But, then I realized, that glass cylinder reminds me an awful lot of those novelty lightning orbs you can usually find hanging around wherever you can also find lava-lamps. And how do those lightning orbs work? By electrically charging the gas inside of them, turning the gas into plasma! And I mean ACTUAL plasma, not whatever that weird melting green crap in Fallout is.

    • @backonlazer791
      @backonlazer791 8 лет назад +16

      So laser weapons are plasma and plasma weapons are... Ehh, ectoplasma? =P

    • @ZinTyPhoon
      @ZinTyPhoon 8 лет назад +18

      Backon Lazer I can only think that maybe Fallout's "plasma" is some kind chemical compound designed to dissolve solids into... less solids?

    • @backonlazer791
      @backonlazer791 8 лет назад +3

      ZinTyPhoon Perhaps, but in the end it's just a vision of the devs and might have nothing to do with science.

    • @ZinTyPhoon
      @ZinTyPhoon 8 лет назад

      Backon Lazer Other than programming the game itself, I don't think devs put much effort into anything scientific.

      Fallout 4 doesn't feel like a fallout game,

    • @inconspicuousjerry6660
      @inconspicuousjerry6660 8 лет назад +15

      The problem is that fallout 3 was a mess of features and writing, making a pretty revolutionary 3d rpg out of a 2d turnbased game is not easy either, so knowing what a fallout game should feel like is pretty difficult if you still want to create something that feels new. Even New Vegas didn't have to deal with this becacuse it ran on the same engine as 3, used about 80% of the same assets, the same systems and all. I agree fo4 wasn't the greatest fallout game, but it was a pretty decent to good rpg that will make the new TES and if there is another fallout only better.

    Dear Austin,
    HI!
    What about the mistake that in the same time and place they have super complex AI to the point that people are willing to die to save a computer in a meat machine (IE Synths) -- machines capable of verbal interface, understanding basically the entire English language, grammar, idioms, jokes, sacrasm, etc. --- and yet the desktop terminals can barely render graphics at all, are monochrome, and look like something out of the late 1970s. Heck, we don't even have the tech behind Wadsworth in our world, and our computers have been better than Fallout's for 40 years. You can talk about microchips vs transistors - and how many transistors it would take to run a Synth or even a robot - and how much room that would take - and how freaking HUGE those machines would have to be. (Think President Eden vs Codsworth.)
    Sincerely,
    Chad
    PS - some may argue that the reason the computer graphics suck so bad in their world is because they didn't have the video game industry to drive that tech --- except Fallout 4 has several video games that run on PipBoys and Terminals.

      Computer tech never really advanced in the Fallout universe.
      The reason the institute has it, is because they researched it themselves.

    • @ChadWSmith
      @ChadWSmith 8 лет назад +7

      The Gentleman - The Institute didn't create Mr. Handys. They were around long before the war (Codsworth specifically was shown active before the bombs fell). We don't have anything close to that level of AI, and yet, we have much better computers. It just doesn't add up. Someone would have taken whatever SciFi magic they use for robots and stuck it in a computer that would talk to you instead of needing a keyboard.
      Imagine a Pre-War Fallout version of the Amazon Echo or the Google Home or even Siri or Cortana. Or even a talking PipBoy with a Mr. Handy level AI... That would be so much better than an Apple Watch.
      Yet, they are stuck with Tandy-1000 looking things all over the place. Even in the Institute, their computer terminals *look* nicer - but they are functionally the same.

      @zachkorman3409 8 лет назад +4

      When you see this long comment and are too lazy to read it but it's too long to be stupid so you just agree with it... am I the only one?

    • @DoctorPorkenfries
      @DoctorPorkenfries 8 лет назад +9

      I imagine it's a combination of a couple things. 1: Pre-war America didn't care much about terminals. All the terminals you see are basically just glorified journals. Few are connected to any networks, and even then, usually just a network in that one place. Civilians probably just didn't see/care about the potential of computer terminals. Meaning corporations generally wouldn't, either. General Atomics and RobCo were out to make money, so if people only wanted a computer to jot down notes, that's what they got. From their perspective, putting their best computers in stationary terminals instead of moving, working, and fighting robots would have been a waste.2: The Institute: basically the same thing as pre-war America, just for different reasons. They were so focused on their synths that they just didn't care about making computers better. They also seemed to reject any kind of entertainment, instead choosing to focus on science 24/7. So probably they made some terminals that allowed them to jot down notes and communicate across the Institute and simply didn't care to do anything beyond that. Not to mention any research projects have to be approved by the director, who has...faulty reasoning, to say the least. After all, he chooses to force Virgil to continue experimenting with FEV far past the point where FEV could be useful, and refuses to allow continued research and advancement on the cybernetics that allowed Kellogg to live so long.

They have got to have some slow down mechanic, cushioning and etc, but if it were to slow down to the point where its hard to be shot down, i think itd be too fast for the body to handle anyway. And then you got the dead stop which as we saw is quite...fatal.

    3:51 - What people were talking about with the whole "lasers have kickback b/c gas exits the barrel" is that certain lasers are produced when gas is excited and light is released as the gas atoms return to ground state. The problem with this logic is that the gas NEVER LEAVES THE GUN! the gas doesn't have to leave in order to produce light, and as explained in the video, gas can and will deflect light. I mean, sure, the gas expands as it gets hotter, but if it actually left the gun you would have a plasma-flamethrower hybrid that shoots superheated gas with a by-product of light instead of a gun that shoots light with a by-product of heat.

    One way to address the inertia dampening problem is to figure a way to distribute energy away from the wearer of the power armor more quickly.
    Not through silly things like braces and cushions, as they only work across the surface of the person’s body. But rather, magnetic fields, so as to brace the entire volume of the subject and distribute it evenly.

    I've always thought the simplest explanation for "recoil" in sci-fi laser guns would be that there's some mechanism in the gun that causes it.
    A solenoid moves a bunch of magnets across a flux capacitor in order to charge the quantum capacitor which provides the energy burst for the shot or summat.

  • @TheChaosCorvid

    My problem with the laser recoil thing is that they clearly generate plasma around the beam (similar to the proposed design called a PEP, which uses a pulsating laser to create plasma) the plasma expanding would create a lot of kinetic energy that would act on the gun. This would limit the range of the laser but not significantly considering there's a laser design that literally uses this to increase the damage output. It's also possible that it's moving parts, since if you look at the designs of the laser weapons there ARE indeed moving parts, including automatic lasers having spinning parts that would generate a lot of shaking depending on the weight of some parts.

    Another point relevant to the question of whether fusion or fission bombs created the Glowing Sea is that fusion bombs have three stages: a chemical explosive triggers a fission explosive, which triggers a fusion explosive.

    Hey there, 4 and a half years late to the video, NICE. But I have a theory about the recoil for laser weapons - and its not down to the weapon itself or how it works at all. Instead, its down to the user. If you only had a weapon that recoiled i.e. a normal gun you would get used to the recoil, and you would reflexively deal with it. If youre then given a gun without recoil, you would struggle to deal with the lack of it. My theory is the player adds their own artificial recoil naturally because that is how guns are "meant" to feel, even if they dont need to. Its nothing definite and I have nothing to prove it but hey, its an idea. If youre reading this, stay safe, and have a nice day.

      In MatPat's defense, these types of episodes a) don't tend to do very well and b) are actually a huge pain to make. I thought it'd be easy because I'd already done most of the research, but the longer you put it off, the more videos you have to cover, so doing a "everything I've fucked up" video can quickly become overwhelming.

    Hey Austin (or anybody who's interested),
    If photons (light) have momentum, doesn't that mean that they also have a mass? Because the formula for momentum is mass multiplied by velocity. Therefore, if a particle has momentum, it must have a mass.
    Sincerely,

    One thing about the power armor fall damage to the body. If you calculate the whole body support the power armor provides it can spread the force over a larger area and also distribute the force evenly allowing for greater impact survivability. I don't think the suit could provide terminal velocity recovery, but I would say the jumping off a building could be plausible with the correct sequence of dampeners. So its not just your legs, your whole body would feel the pressure at the same time. Just a thought.

    I want to point out with the laser rifle situation, the gas would most likely be escaping through some seams in the side of the gun, or some vents, as opposed to the front of it, since there is no barrel, only a laser and some focusing crystals, of which would be sealed in a chamber so no dirt (and gas) could get in / out of. You were right all along. The gun might vibrate a bit from the rapid gas expansion, though it would not have enough force to blow up the gun itself unlike you said, since the actual internals of the laser rifle would most likely be way too crammed in there for enough gas to exist in between the parts, and thus not enough for the gun to explode or break easily, and considering these were widely used, they would definitely be made to be durable enough so that the gas expansion wouldn't affect it lol.
