Zelda’s INSANE WEATHER! The SCIENCE!… of Zelda Breath of the Wild REUPLOAD

- This was quite literally one of my favorite videos I ever did, on the crazy weather in Breath of the Wild. It took me over 15 hours to get all the data I needed for it, and, as a result, I think this is one of the best videos I ever made. This is the gold standard for SCIENCE episodes, and I hope to make another video this good some day.
#breathofthewild #gametheoryscience #zelda
Hey everyone. As you know, I've moved on from the Game Theorists, and as a result, a lot of my old videos were unlisted over there. No drama, no bad blood, it's just how these things are done! That said, I'm reuploading my old videos here, because there's 94 of them, give or take, and averaging at about 15 minutes each, that's *23 hours* of videos that I worked on that I don't want to get lost to the sands of time. On average it takes about 3 hours of editing to do one minute of video (wrap your head around that one for every vid you've ever watched), not to mention the writing time and research time (usually days for each). That boils down to 174 DAYS of editing time for the entire stack. I'm proud of most of these and don't want people to have issues finding them, so I'm going to be reuploading about 2 per month as to not overwhelm the channel with content.
THIS video is one of my favorites. The work I did on it was absolutely out of this world, and I kinda can't believe I actually did everything I did on it. It's just wild. It took me hours and hours and hours to just get data for this vid, and it turned out so well.
Nice to see your still on RUclips thanks for the SCIENCE
Glad they are back!
WOOOO YEAH BABY SCIENCE IS BACKCYHGGKKNKL
Keep up the good work!
I am so glad I kept my subscription for this channel then. Your videos were some of my favorite on the game theorists. It didn't matter that if I didn't play all the games you were talking about your videos are fun and your sometimes insane rants are awesome to watch. I'm looking forward to your content and I'm keeping my eye on this channel.
As someone who outgrew Game Theory....or rather, GT changed their target demographic, your videos were always some of my favorites. Glad ill get them in my sub feed again.
My issue with GT was that it seemed to care less and less about the facts. I got banned from the subreddit because I posted an extremely detailed scientific explanation of why Multiple Personality Disorder/Dissociative Identity Disorder might not actually exist and it might be dangerous to public health to tell people it does. It seems as if telling people that they might have it makes a percentage of the population develop new and painful symptoms that they never had before. This is even true of the patient zero of DID, "Sybil" (real name: Shirley Ardell Mason). My explanation took several hours to write and included references from the American Psychological Association--y'know, the people who LITERALLY wrote the book on psychological disorders, Psychology Today which basically makes complicated scientific papers understandable to the layman, and like 10 various peer reviewed academic journals. I offered to explain the science in even more detail if anyone wanted because this is the field my degree is in and I care deeply about the topic.
The comment from the mod who banned me was that I needed to "educate myself."
Then the very next video they posted said that the Montgomery County, MD police department was in Baltimore. Montgomery County doesn't even share a border with either Baltimore county or Baltimore city which is its own legal jurisdiction almost entirely surrounded by the county. I watched a few more videos after that but each of them had some glaring issue and I just couldn't even bring myself to care anymore.
On-point
To me it felt like Game theory started to take itself too seriously after they got the big influx of people from Fnaf and it just got worst. Might Also just be the fanbase attacking people as fanbases do tho.
I know exactly what you mean!
There used to be so much more math and practical application.
Now it's mostly just rumors and timelines.
Easier to access to the wider public, but less technical.
I remember the days when you cursed. It's oddly liberating to hear it again, even if it's bleeped.
No longer do we need to trend #LetAustinCurse
its an older video from when he was at game theory, once he gets to new science videos im sure there will be swearing.
@@ATJonzie Remember RUclips's new policy? Even Markiplier is being forced to censor himself.
@@helizteil2625 well shit, I don't keep up with RUclips for a reason
I hope that something other than ear piercing bleeps censor the swearing at the very least.
Because I enjoy the swearing, and am ok-ish with the censoring, though hate ear piercing bleeps ;-;
Hearing Austin swear again is like hearing the crescendo of Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture
but that exact part of the song is IN the v- OHHH THAT'S THE JOKE
The SCIENCE has returned and I cannot possibly be more excited. Welcome back, Austin!! 📢
Thank you for reuploading them! The SCIENCE videos are some of my favorite. Keep up the good work :)
The old intro. The loud, enthusiastic, cursing Austin. This is how it should be.
Hi! Biologist here. I can account for why Hyrule has a lot of fields when it should be covered in trees. It all comes down to succession.
Succession is the process by which plants grow. Turning barren wastelands to fields and then forests. Primary succession is untouched land. Think places where people never stepped foot. Secondary succession is when the area has been stripped (people moved in and built stuff) but then it is left to grow wild again. Normally, moving from one phase of succession to the next (fields to forests) it takes a decently long time. At least a good few hundred years, if not thousands of years.
All the places we see fields in Hyrule are places of secondary succession. They were villages and outposts. And they all burned down, reducing the place to basically a wasteland again. Or at the very least a field. Not only that, guardians and bokoblin camps still roam those areas, slowing down succession progress.
So it actually makes sense for there to be fields in a temperate rainforest climate. It's because the land hasn't had enough time to recover. Give it another couple hundred years. Then it'll be rainforest again.
I didn’t realize how much I missed this guy. Austin for life.
I probably watched this when it first came out but forgot because it was during a college semester. The weather in games is weird, but *gestures broadly* humans seem to be doing a "great" job at making the IRL weather weird.
Well we're not meteorologists. If we can't make fictional weather realistic, obviously we need to make real weather fictional instead.
😢😢Plough I d wswsdsdswmd😢
Austin: "Hyrules weather is weird"
me, an englishman: "looks like a normal april to me?"
swords are just big knives🤔
Ahhh yes, the magical combination for SCIENCE, classical music and a smattering of swearing, utter perfection.
Ngl, I love the energy of these. They were by FAR my favorites on GT =D Makes me smile just listen to you talk there
I’m glad these videos are back. All through middle and high school I loved watching your SCIENCE! videos, made me sad when they stopped coming through. I would still binge all of them every month or so, you made science actually interesting. I hope there’s more to come!
For real tho.
It inspired me to try and consider returning to college to play catchup on all the math and science classes I had to resign myself to never taking while in HS ‘cause my science and math teachers were… 1 teacher taught an entire subject and therefore all levels of that subject, and I just didn’t learn well whatsoever from them, as they never bothered to TRY to adjust their approaches to reach more students vs “give a lecture, assign 30+ problems, wash their hands of us.” (And it was a very small school. Less than 200 students, 20 per grade. They had the time relatively speaking for more individualized approaches if they cares to. They didn’t. They made tenure at a small private christian highschool so they no longer gave a shit. Still think my parents wasted their money but whatever.)
Sadly, I have chronic health issues that forced me to unenroll and give up on taking maths-my hands no longer let mr write without pain, and certainly not enough/long enough to make it through a lecture, even when only copying down the professor’s work vs working ahead alongside it. Can’t do homework like that.
So I’ll have to just enjoy videos like these vs able to fully follow along or work alongside them…but that’s okay.
Glad to see these classics making their way back over here! Is there any chance we could get the original upload date included somewhere, just for the sake of historical context?
Probably end of 2017-start of 2018 baaed on what he says in the beginning.
I really want that too, just in the description for posterity's sake and curiosity.
Also because it lends context to him here not mentioning windbombing and BLS-ing for the flying minigame in a current video, even if they're maybe too difficult for it to be practical for him to master just for this video.
For this one, it's, December 19th 2017.
Ages ago I saved GT's "The SCIENCE!" playlist in my library, so I can still access it even if it's unlisted.
Gonna be nice to have all of these videos on one channel again. Was always weird having weird fragmented playlists. And hey, this is a good opportunity to rewatch all of them! Cheers!
my guess as to why Hyrule is less foresty than it should be in theory is due to the many civilizations (mainly the hylians) they've just cut all the trees, and if wasn't the civilizations, it was definitely Ganon, and 100 years isn't enough time to regrow an entire forest out of thin air without any saplings.
Also, Im curious, did you test any of the areas that shouldn't be as rainy in theory? just for comparison's sake
Well for some areas it could just be due to the rocky areas, beyond that I would guess less trees being from the Hyrule citizens trying to rebuild any structures following Ganon's return.
this video was one of my favorites on the old channel and i revisited it often, i love the combination of breath of the wild and the weather science, i'm so happy to see you reupload it! excited to watch your future reuploads!
Blows my mind this is from almost 5 years ago. We’re getting old bois
Is this a prelude to the return of one of the greatest gaming channels on RUclips?! Is the storyteller coming back??.. is shoddy being revived?
Could this possibly lead into a Legend of Zelda Lore Series? Please say yes.
As someone who was going to school for meteorology when this video first cane out, and now am going for my masters, this video is one of the handful of videos I use when explaining the basics of weather to others. You've done a great job of explaining things like uneven surface heating, pressure gradients, different scales of weather (like microscale vs mesoscale vs synoptic scale), and a few other concepts. I'm so glad you've re-uploaded this, since it's a great way to introduce those concepts to people!
I'm really glad you were able to reupload them! Once I saw them delisted I was so worried that I would never be able to see THE SCIENCE again 😢
it is somewhat nice to do a deep dive rewatch of these old science vids that i've partially forgotten
Thank you for reuploading them. It is enjoyable to rediscover these. I didn't know this channel existed until I realized it has been awhile since I had seen a "The Science" video. Once I realized they were starting to get delisted over on the other channel I did some Google-fo and found your new old home.
Austin: *uses Pythagorus*
Me who is terrible at geometry but knows Pythagorus theory: “you know, i’m somewhat of a scientist myself.”
You're out norman
I love these. Really glad to see them re-uploaded. I've never played Legend of Zelda but I've sure learned a lot about its weather.
Can you put in the description the original upload date?
I'm just curious, it would add to these reuploads for people like me who are interested in posterity.
Also because it's interesting that this was likely made before windbombing and BLS-ing made the flying minigame relatively trivial.
I do hope more of these older videos get reuploaded. I LOVED all of them and would always take the time to watch them over any of the other GT ones. I will be glad to rewatch them again, the editing is hilarious and amazing all at once and deserve way more love and recognition. And all the math and science is just *chef's kiss*.
Edit: I'm on mobile so I just now saw the pinned comment. I am prepared to watch all 94 of said videos as they show up lol
I also have a lifelong obsession with (good) open-world rpgs. This game is everything I ever wanted from an open-world experience and I wholeheartedly agree with every sentiment you express about the light that is the climbing mechanic, and the dark that is the rain.
I cannot wait until all your videos are back up, because I had a playlist with all of them and listening to them was one of the only ways for me to fall asleep. Gonna be a rough few months ;-;
HELLS YEAH! AUSTINS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've missed ALL the content!!!
Methinks I should binge some Shoddycast to celebrate!
I don't even play Zelda, but this is it. This is what initially roped me into watching GT (props to finding Ash's true age), which then led me to watch my first video by you, and now we're here. I'm so thrilled you're back.
This was one of my favorites you did, and I'm so glad I can see it again! Please do more of these games on Shoddy. I know you did a lot of more serious/apocalyptic games, but I've grown up a Nintendo boy and can't deny that I continue to love and buy pokemon, zelda, and mario games at age 32. Keep up the amazing work bud!
Im so glad this is the first video to be reuploaded. Absolutely one of my favorites and I can appreciate it even more now that I’ve actually played BOTW.
Excited to see what you do next! While I love game theory, your videos were always my favorite. I love learning all the nitty gritty details about THE SCIENCE of random stuff, and has GT moved towards more lore based videos, it made your videos all the more interesting.
I'm so excited to rewatch all these science videos again, they are just amazing 🥰
Always loved your videos, and this one always stood out to me for how much research you put in and how interesting the topic was. So glad you reuploaded this one.
I just came from your video explaining what happened. this is one of my favorites. I was worried ehen I didn't get notifications on SCIENCE videos anymore. Glad to see you back at it Austin. I can't donate but I will be watching.
YES AUSTIN! So good to see you back making Science!!!!! videos!
Thank you so much for reuploading these :)
Austin's videos are what I looked forward to the most on the gt channel. I think they're initially why I subscribed to that channel. Matpat has good content and everything, but Austin drew me in and kept me coming back. Just glad to see ya still making videos. Thanks! :)
I was here for the original Science videos (and old videos on Elder Scrolls online of all things, lol). I followed when you moved to GT, and am happy to see you return where it all started.
Glad to see your return.
It also makes sense that there aren't a lot of trees considering Hyrule is inhabited. Which means that a lot of those trees would likely have been cut down. Europe used to be basically one big forest
This is awesome! Glad to have you back
So glad that I’m getting your videos in my feed again. Hope all is well with you Austin, your videos certainly brighten my day.
You didn't lose Game Theory, Game Theory lost you, KING
Glad to have you back, Austin. I missed your scientifically chaotic energy. Thanks for keeping us in the loop, and have an awesome day!
Thank you for continuing to work on ShoddyCast Austin, we all really appreciate it. 🖤
Your videos were always my favourite part of Game Theory, I'm glad you're reuploading them here :]
This is one of my favorite The SCIENCE...videos, I'm glad that it got reuploaded.
I wish I've seen this video before every time prairie home companion gets mentioned it warms my heart.
I never unsubbed and I never will. So happy I found out you were uploading on here again. I’m glad you’re still with us and I hope the future is fruitful for you Austin. Thanks for teaching me to love science,
sincerely Ti
P.S. I hope overwatch releases some interesting characters because maybe just maybe for nostalgia’s sake you could make a video… even a youtube short about the science of something like that because watching those old videos were literally the most fun I’ve ever had being both a nerd and a geek at the same time haha.
I was worried- I hope everything is well nonetheless, but its a blessing to see you around again!
You have no idea how much that into makes me happy.
This is also one of your best videos.
This has long been my favourite SCIENCE of video. And it's honestly mildly amusing that I find out now that you've reposted it to your own channel because I recently mentioned to my partner that you scienced BotW's weather and the way it works specifically in the Faron region (since that's where she was at he time).
My second favourite is the DDLC predicted the future one because of the opening "rant" about the evolution of communication, so I look forward to when you can add it to this channel.
And now I'm wondering how The Upheaval in TotK would affect this weather map, considering a lot of the heat has gone away.
This one and the wind waker one were my all time faves. I remember laughing so hard at some of the “keep calm…NOPE.” Moments that were throughout them.
Loved coming across this one again, excellent work! I'm excited for the reupload of your windwaker video, I remember that one being quite good
Let's gooo!!!! Love your videos, new and old! You do excellent work, Scientist!
So sometime after this video originally came out, the ZeldaTuber Bread Pirate used some internal data to measure Hyrule more accurately. I'd kinda like a remaster of this video sometime using those measurements, or something like a stream that does the math using those new variables
Good to see the good work, you were kinda the only reason I still payed attention to the theorist channels
Its good to have you back
The Science back on ShoddyCast? Weird but welcome. Hopefully this channel continues to grow now that it will have more regular uploads. Even if its just reruns at the moment.
It's not just reruns, we've had a few videos in the past month!
@@ShoddyCast
That is some nice news ^^
As someone who still binges the Fallout Storyteller and Elder Scrolls lore series (and the old SCIENCE videos ofc) I am so stoked for a potential Shoddycast return arc
Same, Austin. Someone bought me a Switch for last Christmas and just bought Breath of the Wild soon after. And as a narrative open world fan, I was blown away harder than a bokoblin by a korok leaf.
I'm still waiting for the zelda "the science videos" Austin, love your videos, specially those, I identify a lot with you and your feelings, sometimes it's awesome knowing I'm not the only one who hopes that "these" times are anything but a memory of a distant past, Thanks!
was thinging of re binging the SCIENCE! and was wondering where it went, glad to see it and you are back
Welcome back Austin it's awesome to have you back
Austin the Destroyer is well and truly back home. Welcome back good sir. Now I can do all my Science bingeing in one place.
Never stop Austin. You are pretty much my favorite youtuber!

Me: Most accurate example of fluid dynamics. That air pocket formed or captured by your organism would have stayed in your system if the pressure applied by your system were equal to the outside environment.
I'm so glad I subscribed to you so long ago, I love to see your videos all the time, they're my favorites.
I am very happy to hear the 1812 Overture has stayed part of your show@ Thank you.
Love seeing you back at it, and I hope to see you keep making videos.
Also keep your chin up my dude
Just had a look back through the channel, and I can't believe it's been almost 10 years since I found out what Tamriel translates to in the language of the Altmer... Came for the lore, and now stay for The SCIENCE. And Rethinking. And whatever comes up. But I'm happy you'll be reuploading these videos.
Although, I did notice the Prologue video for the TES lore series isn't in the Series 1 playlist... Been a decade though, so a somewhat trivial find. Just pointing it out because I'm pedantic.
Welcome back dude, glad to see a new vid. gotta say though. Kinda miss the old rants,
I hope things end up well for ya mate. Game Theory really isn’t what it used it be. Can’t out my finger on it but the magic seems gone. You still have loads of energy though and I love it!
Austin's tantrums in this video are hilarious
I'm glad to hear you are doing well, I stopped watching GT ages ago and only watched them again when you started posting on them (I found your "sheperd is a zombie" video via the algorithm years ago) your videos are amazing, funny, educational and the effort you put in is clear!
The SCIENCE was my favourite playlist and I can't wait till I can just throw your channel on shuffle and play games!
Don't let your brain goblins belittle you or your work, you deserve everything good thats happened and much more
Dude, you are back. And alive. Nice seeing you again!
Reuploading all the old SCIENCE videos that I suddenly can't find anymore? Well, THAT was a fast Subscribe. Good to see you back, Austin. 😃
There’s definitely a problem with Hyrules climate as depicted ingame. It’s amazing that Hyrule isn’t a barren wind-blasted plain is if not a cloud of space rubble because the planet is rotating way too fast. About 60 times too fast. Because you don’t mention the ingame clock system, I can only assume you take it as fact that one ‘24 hour’ day in Hyrule is equivalent to a mere 24 *minutes* on Earth, with one hour ingame lasting one Earth-minute. Assuming Hyrule is on a rocky, earth-like planet with similar properties like mass and density, and given the Earth rotates at approximately 465.1m/s at the equator, we get an equatorial angular velocity of a blisteringly fast 27,906m/s. More than double Earths 11,186m/s escape velocity.
With such a fast rotation, the surface should at least be a smooth, sandblasted plain with howling winds further grinding the surface down. At worst, there wouldn’t be a surface, as the planet’s angular momentum rips it apart long before life has a chance to even form.
Could be a denser, but smaller planet
Literally read this in Austin's voice and made myself laugh. Well done!
@@garrettcooper58 Except the only planets we know of to get even close to that kind of rotational speed are gas giants. The fastest one we know of, Beta Pictoris b, has an eight hour day with an equatorial speed of about 27777.8 m/s, but it also comes in at 10 Jupiter masses.
I mean... do you really want to play the game at reality speeds? We as the player probably just percieve it as being that fast because to us it's a game. I'd be more concerned about how you can just have link never sleep.
So, I could never remember if hot air was high or low pressure until your little drawing, finally clicked. Thank you.
I can't wait to rewatch every single video you've ever done for the SCIENCE
I've been meaning to rewatch all The SCIENCE videos and these reuploads are the perfect excuse
I had originally said this on the old video on Game Theory, but that obviously got deleted so I'll say it again here: is it possible that the main reason there's so much grass and not enough trees because the environment is still going through it's recovery period after the calamity? If I remember correctly from my Field Bio class, after something like a building gets destroyed/abandoned, there are a few stages nature around it goes through regarding the types of plants that can grow, and the second to last stage in this case would be grasses. The steps before this (if there is one) would involve plants that can grow on things like stone (like the ruins) that either can survive on them until they break down or actively assist in the process, and if the soil after the grass stage is fertile enough & there's enough rainfall, trees will start to propagate the area. This also happens to some degree when a fire burns down a forest or when a tree falls in an equatorial rainforest & exposes the ground to sunlight. But anyway, assuming this is the case, the reason the Deku Forest is a temperate rainforest right now is because there weren't any big buildings there, so there wasn't any stone that needed to break down first so it kinda just skipped a couple steps, & that's assuming it was destroyed at all. So, could this be the case?
Welcome back to your own channel then ! Can't wait to see what you'll cook up next
11:40 I just noticed you had a episode of bill Nye in the background that demonstrates the same thing
It stops raining 24/7 in the Faron region once you finished a specific shrine quest there, “A Song of Storms”.
It's great to see you again Austin. I missed these videos on this channel.
Glad I can finally watch these.
So happy to see this being reuploaded, it is also one of my favorites 😁
Good god i missed these, glad to watch them all over again! :)
Worth MULTIPLE rewatches LOL
This was amazing, I'm happy for the re upload, I never saw it the first time, and I love these videos.
"All my steam library is open world rpgs!" KSP just sitting at the top
More of these please. How about the science behind kratos bow?
Just wait for more of his old content
your videos always remind me of old school xkcd what if. someone just going absolutely ham trying to find insane math and science to explain the most random things
YESSSSS
SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU ON YOUR OWN CHANNEL
Austin: *re-uploads content*
Me: "ohhhh noooo, I have to listen to one of my favorite content creators saying some of my favorite words in one of my favorite mannerisms again. I guess I simply have to watch again."

I've clocked over 5,000 hours in BotW with 16-100% gamesaves across 8 Switch profiles.
Good luck in Master Mode.
