Good science video based on Halo. However, as a Halo nerd, I noticed a few lore details you missed. If you're curious...
2:15 The 12 original Halos (created by the Greater Ark) fired directionally, and had no range limit, one firing in Halo: Silentium being described to hit a neighboring galaxy. The 25,000 Light Year Range was for a second set of Halos (created by the Lesser Ark) which fired omnidirectionally. The pulses of this second set of Halos amplify each other when they overlap, extending their area of effect far beyond what it would have reached if they'd been fired one at a time.
2:28 Yes, 7 Halos fired purging the galaxy of life, but only one of those was from the original set (Zeta Halo, Installation 07), while the other 6 were created by the Lesser Ark.
2:38 The Forerunner Saga implies that the Halos were designed to kill everything bigger than a rabbit, but that the Halos far outperformed expectations, and at the sights of test firings, nothing of any size possessing a neurological system was found alive.
3:33 The Forerunner Saga is a bit vague on the method the Halos kill with, beyond it having something to do with "super-massive neutrinos" moving at "superluminal" speeds, "not respecting space or time" and something about them being transdimensional. It's science fiction stuff that can't really be calculated with real world science to my knowledge. The gamma radiation comparison is really interesting though.
The Lesser Halos didn't really outperform expectations. The Zeta Halo did however because of certain tinkering, which was later discussed in the story. The Halos are completely tune-able, which is even more terrifying should some idiot, Human, alien, or Monitor, decide it's necessary.
SMFDoomas I wasn't specifying the Lesser Ark's Halos. In the design process they weren't intended to destroy neural physical constructs, being as up to that point the Forerunners had no idea that the Flood was capable of using neural physics. I consider that exceeding expectations.

The Master Builder tuned Zeta Halo to SPECIFICALLY destroy Precursor structures when he test fired them. To anyone outside of this knowledge, it would appear to be doing more than planned. But that result was exactly what the Master Builder wanted.

I'd love to see more Halo related stuff on this channel. Something I want to add however, Halo rings are specifically stated to have an amplifying effect on each other. When the waves of... whatever they fire, hit eachother it actually drastically boosts the range beyond 25,000 light years each.

Most lore about the Halo rings, was actually introduced in the Forerunner trilogy written by Greg Bear. That actually covers the construction and technology behind them. In Halo CE, all you learn about the Halo array is that the Forerunners created it to kill the Flood. Thats it.
I gotta stress that the Halo rings used weaponized neutrinos, not gamma rays. Gamma rays are high-frequency electromagnetic radiation; high-energy photons. That is not what the Halo Array discharged.
Halo's were created to fire a burst of harmonically tuned neutrinos to specifically target the nervous system of macrorganisims. It has nothing to do with ionized radiation.
And, if we take into the "sci-fi" angle on the quantum physics of the Halo universe; the weapon is propelled by vacuum energy siphoned from virtual particles (which are codified in Heisenberg's energy-time uncertainty principle) and the dimension of "slip-space"; allowing the neutrino bursts to travel at superluminal speeds. Therefore the Halo effect doesn't travel at C to begin with in the lore, because it isn't photon radiation.
Where did you get the idea that Halo's are weaponized gamma ray bursts? That was never hinted in any of the lore, so I have to come to the conclusion that you just assumed that without researching it further from official sources.
Yeah, forerunners took humans and other species from planets, froze them for, I'm going with 500 years, maybe way less, then after that they sent them back and they repopulated the planets they originated from. Something like that, I haven't seen the video in a long time.

Not to mention, if these particles are travelling through "slip-space" then how are they at all interacting with the universe, they are traveling FASTER then time. And another thing, neutrinos have fuckin' mass and oscillate, so even if you DID "harmonically tune" them they would change flavours and you can't fuckin' stop that, at least light travels at c and only decays in strength over distance.
The important part is this, if the Forerunners had the technology to overcome all of these super huge physics problems to make and operate working Halos, then there is absolutely no reason they could not just wipe out the Flood. The level of technology on display gives me no other option.

The Flood had remnant Precursor star roads to help them crush the Forerunners along with an AI (Mendicant Bias) that betrayed the Forerunners. He was the biggest key player in the downfall of the Forerunners but it was the star roads that really let them win.

I'm pretty sure it gets worse than that. I remember that at some point, guilty spark said that the halo rings blast didn't add to radius through firing seven at once, and spreading it out into seven circles, but multiplied into one massive blast. All the blasts merge into one super wave that decimates everything farther away than even imaginable. And that was only seven rings. The yellow dot on the screen would spread from the video to the desktop from how big it was if they had been able to fire all twelve.

The Halo rings were created by the Forerunner to imprison the flood. The Forerunner er were almost completely wiped out by the flood. in there last attempts to save there race they made the Halo rings. Their civilization was highly super advanced. So we can't yet understand

One point about your calculations Austin,
You were assuming a sphere whilst our galaxy is more of a disk-shape than a sphere shape.
You could have used the area of a cylinder instead of a sphere assuming a more effective design by the forerunners, which means cutting your strength at the source in half by doing so.

I should assume by more than half, as the total area the cylinder would cover would be 8.84x10^7. With the thickness of the galaxy being 10K - 30K this number would be more like 2.45x10^8 the closer you get to the center of the galaxy.
I would calculate farther but I'm short on time and don't actually, know how to calculate the energy needed for that amount.

The halos were designed to destroy sentient life but also to preserve sentient life (thank the Librarian). The flood were stored on one of the halos in an attempt to find a cure.
Flood samples were stored on every Installation, some Shield Worlds, and even The Ark. The Forerunners knew that the Flood couldn't be cured as the hosts body was bent and broken, and their brain would have been either destroyed or consumed.
The Flood isn't a virus, it's a sentient organism that learns from each and every being it devours and assimilates.

Well, it's pretty easily allayed anyway. Apparently Earth is outta range of any known nova capable stars, so yay. Not to not worry though, we'll still get eaten by the sun one day.
As long time fan of Halo, hearing the since behind this, despite a few mistakes around the background of history, mostly around the number of Halo's it's honestly terrifying. So I think I should try clear it up with number of Halos.
Orginally 12 Halos were built, yes, but these original 12 worked more like a Gun, directing their energy to a particular point. However after shit hit the fan with the Flood, another 6 were built, these ones are the "bomb" like ones that send out the radiation that destroys life, that we've come to love in the Halo games. After a battle with the Flood, 11 of the 12 original Halo rings were destroyed leaving one remainder, this one remainder was converted to work like the other 6, then these 7 were used to wipe the galaxy clean of life.
There's still a few issues in my summary, such as the original 12 being significantly larger, but less efficient and effective to the 6 that are left. But explaining centuries of Alien engineering during a War, would take some time.

So... my understanding from the deep catacombs of the Halo lore was that the rings fired radiation that caused stars to emit gamma bursts... creating a chain reaction of horrific stellar doom, not necessarily the rings themselves causing the damage... but yeah, we're all specks of stardust teetering on the razor's edge of oblivion.

Austin, I'm disappointed. You didn't fully answer Clyde's question. He was asking if they were possible to create, not to fire. Could a Halo Ring be possible to create from a structural standpoint? Would it withstand its own weight? Could the ecosystems on the ring possibly maintain themselves? I really wish you had covered these topics. Oh well, nice video anyway.

To create such a weapon the Halo rings should be able to concentrate a terrifying amount of matter in a precise point. Unless you try to bring stars together (which won't really result in "controlled" explosion) the only way is to retrieve the Hydrogen dispersed a bit everywhere in space, putting numbers aside this could be accomplished by placing the rings in a star system where matter is "common".
But retrieving that much of matter, regardless of the process, would take ass loads of time.
At the very best if such a thing is possible you'd probably end up with a black hole maker.
And perhaps a huge space sniper.

I think the halo armour your refeering to is Mjolnir armour, and there are several types of armour, you have MK.4, MK.5, MK.6, SPI just to name a few.

Also, the later models of Mjolnir armor have some borderline-absurd liquid metal crystal layer that amplifies speed and strength by a factor of 5. An un-augmented human lifting his hand had his hand crushed by the amplified strength of the movements.
I was under the impression that the AI was housed in a 'knit-crystal memory' layer, separate from the liquid metal crystal layer.

As someone who has studied a lot of astrophysics, gamma ray bursts would be the least of an immortal person's problems, and to survive, an immortal person would have to find a way to escape to another universe at some point. The universe will only be habitable for so long, and eventually nearly everything in it, from stars to galaxies to even black holes, they all have to die at some point.
Exhibit A - All the stars in the universe will eventually die, and there will be no more fuel to birth new stars. Stars are born from massive stellar nursery nebulas. These are not replenished by the deaths of stars. Exploding stars create nebulas, but they are less massive than the star they came from and not dense enough to form another star as a tenth or so at the very least is locked in whatever remnant the star left behind, be it a neutron star or black hole. The way supernovas create stars is that they send shockwaves through the nebula and populate it with the heavier elements that the star made in its lifetime as well as the elements made in the supernova itself. The shockwave creates waves of density in the nebula that form stars. Eventually though, all of the nebula is used up, and star formation stops. After that, the universe enters a period where all that is left are the low mass red stars, as all the other more massive stars in the universe die much faster than they do. These stars would exist for trillions of years or more, but they to will eventually run out of fuel, and the universe will go dark.
Exhibit B - Now, this isn't the end of the universe. It's just getting started. The age of stars is over. The age of black holes begins. It has a very Lovecraftian sort of feel to it, really. The universe, no longer replenished with stars, is now ruled by their remnants. Galaxies are entirely made up of black holes, neutron stars, and white and black dwarves. It's still a dynamic and interesting place, only things now happen on massive timescales (trillions or even quadrillions of years), and it's almost entirely dark, with the exception of black holes accreting material and colliding dwarf and neutron stars producing massive explosions that dwarf supernovas every now and then. Of course, after quadrillions of years, everything falls into black holes, and black hole merges with black hole until everything in every galaxy falls into their central black hole. Entire galaxy clusters could be consumed in this way. However, because of Hawking radiation, not even black holes last forever. They will all eventually radiate away all of their mass and explode at the end of their lives, and all that is left of our universe is an ever thinning stream of photons expanding for all eternity. Or would it?
Exhibit C - So by now, immortal life forms are mostly fucked. But guess what? IT STILL GETS WORSE FROM HERE! At this point, there are two things that could happen to the universe. After an ungodly amount of time, the dark energy contained in the universe (which appears to be energy produced by empty space and increases as the universe expands) can and will reach such high levels that spacetime itself could just... disintigrate. That's really the best way to describe it. Pop, boom, no more universe, and everything in it is completely and inescapably fucked.
Exhibit D - BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE STILL!!! See, the events of Exhibit C aren't very likely to happen because of one GOD DAMN TERRIFYING thing that quantum physics allows. And guess what? If the universe has an ungodly amount of bad luck, it could happen tomorrow. The probability of this happening tomorrow is an unfathomably small percentage, but it's still great enough that this must happen at some point in the history of the universe. What is this GOD DAMN TERRIFYING thing? Quantum phase transition. This is basically the phenomenon where a "glitch" as you might call it forms in the fabric of the universe due to the randomness of the quantum world. This glitch forms a bubble of what is essentially a new universe where new forces and laws of physics apply that expands from it's origin outward at the speed of light, overwriting the old universe in its wake. Everything in its way would have no warning and would be completely and utterly fucked before they knew what was going on. Yet another cold, unthinking,uncaring, unfeeling hand-of-god scenario. We know this can happen because it has happened already. Mere planck times after the Big Bang, an event that is known as inflation occured. Basically, the original force of the universe, called the "super-force," encountered a glitch super fast and split off into the fundamental forces we know today. This caused the universe to expand much, much faster than the speed of light for a while (basically went from a point smaller than an atom to about the size of a grapefruit in basically an instant. That may not sound big from our perspective, but the volume of the universe multiplied by a factor that can only be described by scientific notation in only a couple of plank times. THAT WAS REALLY FUCKING FAST!) and this is the reason the universe is so uniformly distributed as opposed to having huge dense spots and huge thin spots.
Exhibit E - Oh. You thought I was done? *WELL SIT THE FUCK BACK, BUSTER! I SAVED THE MOST FUCKING TERRIFYING THING FOR LAST!!!* This one is actually pretty theoretical and somewhat unlikely, but if it is true, it is the weirdest ending for our universe and also the most terrifying. It is basically the zombie apocalypse of matter. See, the matter we see in our universe with the likely exception of dark matter is made up mostly of protons and neutrons. These things are made up of up and down quarks. There is another kind of quark out there however that could potentially mix with up and down quarks to form a stable particle, and that's the "strange quark." We've observed these in our particle accelerators and gave it this name because we scientists like to make everyone else feel more confused than we are at the existance of these things. These things are able in theory to form a stable form of matter with an up quark, a down quark, and a strange quark. This kind of particle is known as a "strangelet." These things can only form in energy fields of [insert incredibly massive number here] intensity. Not even supernovae or hypernovae can form these things. But do you know what might? Neutron star collisions. Now, what makes strangelets so *FUCKING TERRIFYING,* you might be asking? Well *PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR PANTS BE SHAT AND ALCHOHOL BE DRUNK FOR HOURS! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!* When a stangelet and a particle of normal matter meet, something truely strange happens. The strangelet bounces away only having a little mass converted into gamma radiation, but the normal matter particle also loses mass that is converted to gamma radiation *AND IT IS ALSO TRANSFORMED INTO ANOTHER STRANGELET WHICH GOES ON TO COLLIDE WITH MORE PARTICLES OF NORMAL MATTER AND FORM EVEN MORE STRANGELETS!!!* The long term prognosis of this is ABSOLUTELY NOT GOOD! Planets, people, stars, galaxies, and eventually all the matter in all the universe explodes in a burst fo gamma radiation and is converted into what is basically zombie matter that may or may not be able to form atoms. EVERYTHING WOULD BE FUCKED!!! Fortunately, because we aren't made of strange matter, this theory is probably bullshit, but if it isn't and we just have been lucky so far, yet another cold, unthinking, uncaring, unfeeling hand-of-god scenario that destroys the entire universe. *FUN!!!*

The in lore explanation for how the weapons of the rings work is(stick with me) :
A simple explanation is that "it neutralises precursor neural science." Pretty simple and nonsensical. - this and all that is to come is from the halo cryptum, primordium and silentium trilogy.
Ok so the longer version, just incase your not familiar with the precursors I'll recap first: the precursors are god like beings that were one of the first species that evolved in possibly the universe, they travel around different galaxies and make life, their overall ambition is to give a species the mantle which means they are the caretakers of the galaxy and look after the life the precursors created, and the precursors are not normal species they aren't just made of normal stuff, they have evolved so far that they understand the nature of neural physics . Now this neural physics (from what is said in the novels) is the thing that surrounds everything and it's also implied that everything is alive through it.
Ok now we have that our of the way we need to talk about life. The precursors generated energy from free space, this is because neural space surrounds everything (I don't know if energy is conserved), the reason I'm mentioning this is because the way the precursors made life is through this neural 'layer?'. Without this neural physics the life that was created in the presence (?) Of it would die. Now it's said that only sentience has the capability of accessing(?) It, unlike say grass which is said to be 'alive' through it but is unable to access it. There are contradictions and not much detail about the specifics in the books.
So what the halo rings do is separate the two components of normal every day physics and neural physics. Now I have no idea why but they do. In the instance the components are separated from eachother the ring 'neutralises' this layer(?) Of the universe in that area. That is the reason only sentience dies as the component they need to live is separated. I suppose microlifeforms like flood spores and plants don't need to access the layer for some reason ?
And after the instance the halo rings fire the neural layer returns. But at that point everything has died. Like someone cutting off your energy for a second, you would die then it's delivered. So I suppose if you wanted to add actual physics to this explanation you can assume the neural layer is on a higher energy level (it must be the highest right?) As it travels through normal space much much faster than light.

Some additional info: The forerunners had No Fucking Clue what neural science was, it is said the halo rings "just barely scratch the surface of the precursors neural physics." I believe the iso-Didacts dad said that or the master builder if your interested. However the forerunners did understand how to destroy the neural physics of the precursors. So basically the ring world's are the precursor tech. Oh and also while it literally destroys anything anything sentient the Domain survives which is a sentient precursor gift. So this indicates there is some kind of resistance to this.

The Halo Rings are explained by simply saying "It's science fiction" the Forerunner understanding of science is meant to be beyond anything we have so much so that applying the things we do know is pointless because we are so far behind.

The halo rings kill everything PERIOD
One point to be listed. If it is shunting all of it's energy into slip-space, and they have it set up so the energy only pops out when encountering planetoids or other objects. The actual "real" radius could be made much smaller than its effective radius, thus dramatically reducing the requisite energy to achieve the same effect. The forerunners were magic with slipspace so who knows what deviousness they could have used to reduce the needed energy.

There are a total of 18 rings, 12 built at the greater ark, which where much larger and weaker than the 6 built from the lesser ark, that where built later in the forerunner war with the flood.
11 of the orginal 12 where destroyed, leaving only zeta halo, or installation 7, being the last halo built from thr greater ark. Which it did took a lot of damage, losing hundreds of kms of ring, and during repairs was made smaller, to match the rest of the halos made from the lesser ark.
I'm unsure if this part of the lore came out after this video was uploaded, but it's always good to be informed.

There's also a thing that says the halo blasts damage it's radius almost immediately. finally, on the wiki, it says the only way to be protected is on a shielded planet, which is in slip space.

Oh it surly fucking can! There is a ratio in the thickness of the lead and the density and amount of the radiation. Very little radiation against a decently thick plate won't penetrate much but on a 1-1 ratio it just sweeps through.
it is restiant every thing is resiant to every thing though. Enough wood would stop gamma rays though the amount may be very high. But sure it your small scale uses lead works. Though even if you did not die in the gama ray burst by being on the other side of the planet or under cover you still fucked beyond fucked. 2:30 there aren't 7 left there is actually only 1 left from the original 12 but they made 6 more to make the 7 mentioned in the games.
The original 12 rings were crated by the Greater Ark which was destroyed with 11 of the 12 rings in the firing of the rings then the newer 6 rings were created by the Lesser Ark which was smaller.
The original 12 rings fired in more lateral way rather than in all directions which the later 6, also smaller, corrected on and they do fire in all directions.
The radius is 25000 light years but the galacxy itself is only 180 lightyears? And there are 12 needed for the whole galaxy, YEAH LOGIC!

Erm, the video was literally about finding out the minimum power that the rings needed to output to be effective, what did you think he was doing?
That was the original premise, sort of. It starts off by saying each ring has a max distance of 25k light years. Then it sets out about finding out how powerful gamma radiation has to be at that distance out, then work your way back.
But then he ends up using what the average supernova emits, and working back from there. What the average supernova emits isn't necessarily how powerful a burst would have to be to be devastating, it could be far far below that or even far above. Also, he then took what the effect would be from a burst only 2.2k light years away, when what we actually need to know is the distance from one 25k light years away.

Hey there! Another Halo science question. In Halo: Reach the covenant are using massive plasma blasts to melt the planet Reach's surface and burn all life on the planet. When the planet's surface cools, the result is a hard glass like substance. Would a weapon like this be possible? Would the planet actually turn to a glass like substance?
