    "Gravity" would be different between the center and the edges of the flat plane. For example, the center of the plane would be closer to the center of rotation, lowering the centripetal force, and thus the perceived gravity (compared to other regions of the plane). The edges would be the opposite, where "gravity" would be higher.
    A Halo shape fixes this by bending the plane (which then, is no longer flat) so that every part of it is the same distance from what it orbits.

    • @InvaderMik
      @InvaderMik Год назад +19

      I think the world could be curved around the center without becoming non-flat (assuming that we’re willing to allow “flat” and “planar” to be two different things). As long as it’s not an orb, toroid, cylinder, cube, or some sort of other closed polyhedron, I think we could say it’s flat.

    1) Start a new Minecraft world
    2) Start punching trees, as one does in a new Minecraft world
    3) Notice that the upper logs do not fall when the ones below are removed, thereby proving that gravity as we know it IRL does not apply here and thus the entire latter half of the video working from premises of IRL gravity physics is entirely inapplicable.

  • @overestimatedforesight
    @overestimatedforesight Год назад +38

    You can create a nonspherical gravitational field by having matter underneath the bedrock. More of it is on the edges to counter the inwards pull of gravity. You'd also have to account for the corners. Given that we don't see matter under bedrock, it's possible that it's in the form of black holes being contained.

    32m/s² is terminal velocity in earth's atmosphere. Anyway, gravity in most video games (minecraft included) isn't a result of mass. It's just downward force applied to objects. Usually there is a modifier that is univerally applied to all objects, but can be modified independently by individual object, object types, areas of the map, etc... this happens even in games set in space, where gravity is effectively zero, and the physics engine really only has to account for velocity and momentum.

    spinning the plane will result in the outermost areas pulling you away from the center of the plane resulting in you feeling like you are on an odd half sphere but the edge feeling like its a hill leading up to the center

    Watching the video and beginning a little after 8:00 I hear “Neptune, the Mystic.” What a beautiful peace of music, along with the other pieces in The Planets. It’s one of my favorite pieces of music overall. It captures so much about how we characterize each planet, and Uranus and Neptune having names of sort of mystical beings is cool, as we didn’t know the specifics about them except how they orbited our Sun and had moons (only 1 in Neptune’s case).

    Yes! A long gripe of i’ve had with your (very entertaining and educational) serious is that you ALWAYS use the physics of our universe, even when the game obviously has different physics.

    I missed this, always loved Austin’s stuff cause it was not lore all the time which while I did enjoy, it felt like game theory’s original thing of being science

    I always figured the minecraft world was like a terrarium, on a much larger world but unable to perceive beyond a certain point.

    • @Cassiopea525
      @Cassiopea525 Год назад

      The human like beings a a different size than we assume, and the development of its surface being observed by outside forces beyond perception. It would allow it to have round planet physics while also having the sun appear in the same location from the whole map.

    I think it's elegant. It even solves the issue of "falling" out of the world when you break the bedrock. Normally, you'd think gravity would pull you back, but if it's spinning, the source of the gravity makes so much sense.
