Mount&Blade is in a league of its own. No game has ever managed to came close to the depth and accessibility of its trademark melee combat mechanics. It defined a standard that many game titles including Chivalry, War of the Roses, Mordhau, Of Kings and Men and most recently Kingdom Come Deliverance tried to emulate or got inspired by. Can't wait for Mount&Blade 2: Bannerlord.

Theirs a few of these games I've never heard of, but nice list, I'm a sucker for first person melee games especially if they did the physics correctly especially during battle so it has a sense of realism when you block or strike down and hack and slash your opponent.

Dark Messiah for me still remains the most satisfying hack and slash game Ive ever played. It may not have had as much detail compared to Chivalry but the top notch animations and overall polish is unrivalled out of both your lists.
Arkane's next game, Dishonoured was nice but the melee mechanics just did not compare to throwing a barrel at an orc's face before stabbing him then kicking his buddy down the stairs and slicing his head off. I hope they one day go back to Dark Messiah's formula because it is still my favourite.
Hellraid is a game you should look out for but it seems to lack the satisfying killmoves that Dark Messiah has.
Agreed, it's too bad it's just a spin off from the original Heroes strategy games taking place in the same universe. It's one of my favourite games as well because of the way you can interact with your environment whilst fighting.
fludbludd you should try shadow of mordor.....best violent combat so far for me in a hack slash game.
Dark Messiah had fantastic combat alright. It's kind of like a first person version of Severance in a sense.
Rune is definitely a great game in this list. Been playing it for over 10 years and still like it. If you would like to give it a try i really recommend to talk to the multiplayer players. They are a very small community and all very good players compared to beginners :)

I love this genre. You have a good list. I have not played the Savage games or jedi knight. Although everybody has different taste , my favourites are :

One of my favourite hack and slash games ever was the highly underrated 'Chaos Legion'. I doubt many people here have played it though.
The SR legend that game was AWESOME, i played it before i played DMC and honestly, i would love a new Chaos legion game

Most of the runner ups mentioned have much better combat than the majority of the games mentioned in the video. There's way too much of a bias to online RPGs, which I don't think even count as hack and slash games. I'm glad Severance at least made it.

If not for the lack of decent multiplayer, i would say that Severance: Blade of Darkness should be in top 3. After so many years since it came out, it still remains my favorite action game of all time. Also from your list, M&B looks promising...
If you loved Severance, the Rune single player campaign might be something worth checking out. As for multiplayer, I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy M&B Warband a lot. :)
FreeMultiplayerGames Yeah , i played Rune a long time ago and i remember i enjoyed it. Still in my opinion is far behind BoD. What i loved about BoD, besides unique fighting style or insanely fun bloody limb severing, is that feel that your character actually walks, it doesn't somehow floats, walks on ice... or "moonwalks" at great speeds in any direction (wich sadly seems to be a successful recipe for multiplayer games)...
Gordon A. I agree, BoD has a very realistic feel to it. As for multiplayer games, I have the strong impression that during the last decade there was hardly any melee combat game released that's not trying to be strictly realistic - the same goes for shooters... Well, currently there are a bunch of fast-paced arena shooters in development from indie game studios, but there's nothing to be expected from the game giants.

Enclave has no multiplayer and it's not fully about melee combat, but the story it's great and there is a good variety of weapons, you can even choose between two campaigns.

Well, the clan scene died 3-4 years ago only 2 years after the release of the game (which is in my opinion most embarrassing since S2 games created Savage 2 with esports in mind - they didn't in Savage 1, but the clan scene is still strong even after over 10 years...) Besides competitive play Savage 2 was doing fairly well until late 2012 when the US popularity reached a critical point. Nowadays only EU servers are populated at 3-4 hours a day with a peak of around 20 players, while most of the time all servers are dead. The game used to be good and deserves a place in this list, but I can't recommend it with such a low popularity.
Yes I agree with you 100%. And yeah I know what you mean I have been around for most of it. The death of the US scene was also the death of a small part of me. S2games could have done something amazing with this game but they abandoned it long ago for another dota clone. I don't play much any more for the same reasons you listed but a good game can still be found on EU at the right times. Maybe someday somebody will make a game that is comparable to this. It's sad that your list consists of mostly old games. Somebody needs to take the risk of making a new game with melee combat that meets the criteria you list in your video.
For me chivalry is the the top dog. When you meet an elite player on the field you really get nervous, because one little mistake and even a movement a little out of place from your part , gets instantly exploiteted by the monster your'e facing and he cuts you down like a child. All the drags, fients and tactics and the thing said above about veterans really keeps you on you toes EVERY single time you play it. Also the audio, and the weights of the hits really makes it Feel painful taking them, and really rewarding getting one in on your opponent. Even though mount and blade is s good game, i would really love it more if you took the whole interface from Chiv and redressed MoB with it. Because it would be awesome if some team objective maps in Chiv had horses and all the mecanics that come with it :-)

Yeah sorry, that took me a while... :) I was still feeling guilty for showing Jedi Academy instead of Jedi Outcast footage in the last one. Plus Chivalry, War of the Roses and Savage XR (was beta before) got released and PVKII got improved a lot too (still in beta). Reason enough to update my video. This time I focussed a lot on finding/recording good gameplay, so even if you don't agree with my list it should be still an enjoyable "frag movie" to watch! ;)

Some of the games do indeed look interesting. Ok I see this is a PC games list, but I also recommend the Monster Hunter Series for PSP. My favourite hack'n'slash game.
i played nearly all of them and this lift is almost true.

Hope you're still alive. And still up for making a 3rd list of best melee orientated games? There are plenty of new games that are continuing the franchise or just starting to enter this genre. A fine examples: For Honor. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord. Dark Souls III. Savage: Resurrection (A 3rd installement of Savage series, which is still being kept mostly in secret).

No Dark Souls or Dark Souls 2? It have the most original and competitive hack'n'slash/melee combat system in an action-RPG game... Come on...
I assume it's because you can lock onto your enemy. However having the ability to lock on doesn't take away from skill at all what-so-ever. Your ability to execute is indeed what matters most in any action game after all. Especially Hack and Slash.
Original? How so? It's a pretty basic combat system really. Upon collision you do static damage, you can choose between light and heavy attack and blocking projects a "force field" in front of you. Parrying (timed block) and riposte (counter attack) are also quite common elements in other games. In what way is Dark Souls melee more original and competitive than other games of it's generation?
Yoriko Arran So, if you say... List ONE game of this generation with the SAME combat system of Dark Souls... Not including Lords of the Fallen because they used Dark Souls as a inspiration for combat system...
The fact is, Dark Souls don't have "only" the basics of melee combat... From Software made more than others games... The "poise" system, the stamina usage, the weapons movesets and hitboxes, all these "common" things are refined by From Software, and not just placed in game like others... The only way to see how the combat system of Dark Souls is UNIQUE is playing the game with various weapons and fighting with other players on PVP, and not just watching videos on youtube.
Diego Lopes The poise system is not particularly unique. In Oblivion (dunno about Skyrim) you can stun your opponent by doing a lot of damage to them in succession. The resistance they have against being stunned depend on their agility. So there is a form of poise there, it is not tied to armour but attribute instead. In Warband you can completely absorb attacks with your armour, making them not do any damage nor stun you. There are also plenty of other games out there with a stamina system such as Dark Souls. About the melee weapon movesets, have you played Warframe? It is a third person shooter/melee, all melee weapons have their unique movesets, they use up stamina and you perform different attacks with the combination of other moves.
Now I do agree with you that they deserve credit for putting all these things into an RPG game with a unique multiplayer mechanic which has been both loved and hated. But when it comes to melee combat, there is nothing original about it.
The Souls series certainly has some of the most satisfying melee weapon combat. Quite honestly, everything FEELS unique even if on paper it doesn't appear unique at all. When it all comes down to it, the only thing that truly matters in a game's gameplay is how it feels. So many games can share the same concepts and ideas for mechanics, however the execution will almost always feel different. This is what makes the Souls games so unique.
To anyone who got balls to claim DMC or any other " Press x-to do the cool melee move" games are harder than these games. These games demand real skill and practice. Kinda like Counterstrike. I've tried both Rune and Savage XR, and played Savage for 6 years. Still no thing more challenging than these games. Graphics maybe not on the top, but its the gameplay that counts. There is a reason Savage still are active in Esports and have outlived many other big games (its' 10year ++). -Bullet/Kaizer Soze
Fuck War of the Roses. I tried playing it, there was literally like 2 servers up, and it was basically a fuckfest of people sitting in your spawn killing you before you could do anything.

Hi. i want to thank you because of your list now i know a couple of intresting games. But, i must say, id tried Died by the sword and Blade of Darkness. (Ive also played Mount and Blade and Jedi academy.)
Id get jedi academy when i was 12. Ive spent like 2 years playing it (id haven't internet) , creating maps, and spawning npcs in a sand-box style. It has a lot of variations (a lot more if you download new content). I was sorry about they dint propertly explode the ships and vehicles (there wasnt any space map in the original game).
Mount and Blade its amazing. The single player is very complex and entretaning (but i couldt get to the end of the game, because id get bored before i conquer the whole continent). The muliplayer was exciting (but id get bored because the only 2 servers id get always play ARENA level... it piss me off. There was really good players so it woulnt be fun for people with average-skill. They virtually where wanking them selves with the mouse...
So, my opinion of the games now i know because of you:
Blade of darkness: It looks interesting at the begining. The multiplayer where very limitated (no bots, a bunch of maps, and no original game mode) . The story mode where fun at some point, but it started being boring when id realised that it wherent any upgrades to the weapons (as a knight, ive found an "whatever edge" weapon with +90 of power in the second level, so from then on, the weapons i picked up where unconvenient until the level 5. The combos where fun to make at all, you must press the direction buttons at the same time or after you slash, which isnt easy to make. The mutilation was fun but as it almost happen every time you kill an enemy, it gets old soon. The game has a bunch of glitches. when i made the tutorial i thought that the fire would be an important element in the game, but is not, also the animation of the fire is very cheap.
When you found itmes like shovels, picks (even limbs) you would think that is also part of the strategy of the battle. But no, the throwing mechainc is veary poor (as you throw some itmes that pass 10 feets in the air upon the enemy or other items, like weapons that arent useful that the most of the time they fall in front of you even with the max throwing bar)
Die by the sword: It is fantastic! for a game from 1998 i dont know how new consles nor some company dint make a remake (for wii for example) The concept is fantastic. It has a lot of variation and complexity in the single player. But, on the other hand its very difficult to handle the mouse-sometimes irresponsive- , it hasnt full gamepad compatibility (you cant rebind the sword hand keys). The characters are unbalanced (even in "normal" is hard to go through the levels of the begining). The multimplayer doesnt seem to work even on LAN (it doesnt find any server -yes, ive my router portforwarded-).
I have Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 but I just can't really get into it. I have no idea how to do advance moves.

I do not agree with the ratings on the games I have played. War of the roses would be the most difficult to master as that features armour and weapon hit boxes that you need to take into account on each attack. As opposed to some of the other games there where it looks like you're mostly flailing around never swinging kind of thing.
Heck, Warband and war of the roses actually features some deeper blocking mechanics than "hold to project force field in front of you" unlike any of those other games.

in this particular video jedi knight 2 is shown which seems rather chaotic, but in fact it kind of isnt, its just very fast.. ive played more of jedi knight 3 though and there the main components are movement and accuracy. blocking is nearly non-existant in practise, though it exists in a way that lets say you attack enemy with a medium attack, and enemy attacks with the same attack, but he is moving faster (lets say landing on you from above) then your attack will be overpowered due to bigger velocity hence more power. you also have to take into account that while moving at those fast speeds you have to also hit the enemy in the correct hitbox (hits in the head obviously deal more damage or even kill people instantly). due to the fact that jk2 has only one saber type (3 stances that you can switch at any time as much as you want), and jk3 having 3 types (even though single saber is still the most used type due to its versatility) you remove the elements of 'your dagger wont do much damage against this heavily armored dude' scenarios. when the fight begins you are evenly matched so all you got left is you and your mastery over movement, accuracy and tactics.
kickedsazabi I've played Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy multiplayer. I use dual sabers, used to be very good at it long ago. Almost all players who use single use the strong style, jumping in with one attack and jumping out when recovering, that's when I usually attack them, however I'll need to be close enough in order to chase them as soon as their attack is over. I think a lot about having momentum in my attacks, using uppercuts (S+D/A attack) when starting a jump and swinging at an angle when descending.
There are many impressive mechanics to the game but no tutorials on them, discouraging new players who die when they mindlessly flail around their saber.
When I fight someone else using duals or single medium style (very rare that I met single saber wielders who use anything but strong style) I use to be able to time my attack with their attacks from an angle that makes them hurt themselves with their own saber. If you master how to deflect attacks with attacks of your own it's amazing. Also saber locking, (if the server has allowed it) Diagonally overhead attacking meeting their straight overhead on your right side gives you an advantage in the contest of strenght. (aka mashing the left mouse button quicker than your opponent) As for the blocking mechanics you can passively block attacks whenever you are not attacking aslong as you're not within hugging distance. You cannot do this well with strong style hence why people with strong style rather not take the chance and attempt dodging the attacks completely.

Tried Savage XR a while back, didn't really understand the mechanics and got stuck in the tutorial ... Is savage 2 worth it ?
Yeah, I've read about that. The Human tutorial of Savage XR doesn't work for everyone, especially when you're low on graphic card memory (Stronghold and Redstone mine aren't shown). Just move on to the Beast tutorial, Melee Practice and Skirmish mode instead. Savage 2 used to be okay, but is almost dead now while Savage XR is still popular. In terms of combat mechanics and depth Savage XR is better anyway.

I watched your previous video. Tried all the games. Some of them were decent, but deprecated. Strongly interested only Rune. However, I have friends in the multiplayer is not supported. Varband better and sophisticated mechanics, and live multiplayer and graphics, realism atmosphere.
Сергей Подарочек I agree, some games are really old and not as good as they used to be (especially in terms of multiplayer). But this is a "all times" list, so I will still give them credit for what they have been. Mount & Blade still has an active multiplayer mode, which is great. And in terms of combat - as written in the rating - M&B has the most sophisticated realistic combat mechanics. If you're looking for a medieval war simulation, it's easily the best game on the list. The downside is that realism can limit a game a lot if you compare M&B to the crazy combat mechanics of JK2 or Savage XR for instance. My rating criteria set originality, pacing, fun and challenge over realism (there's no need for games to be similar to real life, as there are millions of other creative possibilities). That's why Mount & Blade isn't rated higher.

Dark souls beats all of these in my opinion. sure it has a lock on method but that's because poise plays a good role in the sword play. it not about aim at all. swords don't need an aiming mechanic. it's all about timing. no matter the weapon, if you cant time the strike properly, it won't go through. in the ganes on this list, poise doesn't matter as long as your aiming at someone at striking.
