Severance blade of darkness is the best hack n slash ;D
i cannot play it on my pc😥
plz i need help have been a fan of bod for over 10 years plz someone help me teach me how to remove black text and teach me how to download and instal a mod plzzz i beg u
PREACH , brother Bruno. PREACH !
the "Dark Knight" in "Blade of Darkness" is one of the toughest and scariest enemies in gaming...
i loved dark messiah! it was amazaballs. every time i think of hack and slash i think of it
Severance...
This is one well put list (not according to my opinion for best game cuz BoD will be the best until the end of time) but you described the games very well and included many old games.
Rune is one of the best hack and slash games of all time. Rune Classic is now on steam, its a must have. Jedi Knight Jedi outcast should be the number one all time best imo, its old but still a good one.
I think these are games where you "hack and slash" but they are not part of the "hack and slash" genre. You put action games, action rpgs, even strategy games, and forgot about sagas like Devil May Cry, which is incomprehensible...
ex- freaking -actly!
Read the annotation on the last screen.
Yeah, no. An annotation on the last screen is not going to fix the fact that this video is pointless sorry.
Matthew Waugh It's more than sufficient to answer the handful of inveterate whingers complaining about the video, who generally weren't the intended audience anyway.
You understand shit, lol dmc hack n slash? its beat-them-up.
Not fair with "Severance: Blade of Darkness"
I agree its easy to learn but it has the most realistic
fighting mechanism i ever seen in any game.
You forgot to mention Enclave in my opinion with Severance the best h&s game for PC...
To clarify further, I've had Mount & Blade Warband for about a couple years now and I have yet to experience my first bug, I play the game quite frequently and have done since I bought it so that in itself is an example on how unlikely bugs are to occur. Not only that but the fact that a game still keeps me entertained after 2 years is not something to lightly dismiss when it comes to looking for an engaging game. I haven't played much of multiplayer to be honest but the community is still huge.
That's not Jedi Outcast, that's Jedi Academy. Just sayin'.
Yes, it was JA, fixed now: Top 10 Hack and Slash Games / Best Melee Combat Games (of all time, 2014)
Melee based games where you are an overpowered hero that fights against many weak enemies are called "Beat 'em up".
the best hack and slash games are about to overkill an enemy with an extremly unstoppable powerful infinite attack ability in the mid-air and land ...
DMC are perfecly greatest Hack and Slash games of all time ...
the list is TOTALLY wrong ... :)
you said malabarism, no a actual combat
What about Darksiders 2?
You just have the wrong meaning of "Hack'n'Slash"...
DmC, God of War, Darksiders, Kingdoms of Amalur are good Hack'n'slash games... But are not the best... Those games are just about smash X buttom...
The best games with the best "type" of hack'n'slash after 2010 (date of the vídeo) are Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Hellraise (no yet launched), Souls games... For example.
3 . Intense online battles
- The graphics may not be so realistic as the recents games, but the gameplay is captivating. You mostly rely on your skills, not on your weapon.
It's easy to play, but only with experience and practice you become a master.
4 . The singleplayer mode storyline is awesome.
- The story is based on nordic mythology. You face dwarfs, goblins, vikings controlled by Loki, giant snow beasts, deads controlled by Hel, and a lot more. Also it's really captivating.

Awesome video helpd a lot lots of the games in the list are low spec becuse thay are old. Im looking 4 games like that to run on my potato.
Savage has pretty low system requirements. It is also a really awesome game! Easy to learn, but difficult to master.
www.newerth.com
Its old idk the playerbase i dont whant to whait for mach to mach.
*****
What is the difference between www.newerth.com/ and www.savagexr.com/ ?
*****
One is for the community (and contains everything (forum, strategy guide, wiki, etc.), the other is more for promotion. Although the game can be downloaded from either.
There is a letter J?
It's a bit of a bummer that Savage didn't gain much popularity. It really is a unique and well done multiplayer.
you know what Hack and Slash Games mean?
I love the sound jamming my broadsword into flesh
ninja gaiden
I found the comment I was looking for. I can rest now.
Some are oldschool arcade Hack & Slash (Savage XR, JK2, Die by the Sword, Rune), some action Hack & Slash (Age of Chivalry, PVKII) and some are Hack & Slash with RPG elements (Mount & Blade, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Severance). The difference between arcade and action is that arcade games have less limitations based on realism, no cooldowns, aiming downsides, mouse freezes, etc and a more mechanical gameplay - oldstyle. None of these games however has RPG as their most dominant feature.
Where is devil may cry?
Severance :Blade Of Darkness !!! FTW!!! (action/adventure though :P). This video is Hack.
Very good video, but we need a 2012-2014 one :)
Die by the Sword was considered to be the most difficult game in its day, you die plenty of times, but it's fun when you get the hang of it
Also, chivalry: mw and war of the roses??
I have a few problems with the criteria:
"No computer aided aiming." Why not? Many great hack and slash/action games have auto-aim, in the form of lock-on mechanics. Lock-on does not reduce the skill level in a hack and slash game. Even fighting games have auto-aim essentially.
"Via a mouse." Console controllers and other controllers are also well suited to hack and slash games and many with excellent controls have been seen on consoles. I wonder if this point is simply PC elitism.
"PVP" A hack and slash game does not require multiplayer to be great.
It's not my list, of course, but I still feel the criteria are flawed.
dmc3, gow, bayonetta .... sucks
MegaNerd Zero go back to your anime hole and never respawn.
MegaNerd Zero
>Reflexes
>Auto-Aim
. . .
Shuuiketsu ShadowWalker you guys know these games are mostly made for consoles and on a console you cant move the cam that fast thats why the used that system and im ok with it because it could be worse like the combat in batman games....
Lock on's do reduce the skill ceiling of a game significantly as the combat is being reduced to 2-dimensional dodging and timing attacks. Hack and Slash games work perfect on console, but they gain a lot of depth when played with a capable input device and game design that allows you to exploit the devices possibilities. And true, technically a Hack and Slash doesn't require multiplayer to be great, but multiplayer makes it a lot more challenging and increases the replayability dramatically, i.e makes the game more likely to get on this list. Update: Top 10 Hack and Slash Games / Best Melee Combat Games (of all time, 2014)
wait good hack and slash games require a mouse?
That's what a pc elitist will say.
A capable input device (like a mouse) gives a hack and slash game a lot of depth if the game design allows you to exploit the possibilities of that input device - which isn't the case for console games obviously, although they work very fine on controllers, but for the games part of my list.
Drakan, a good classic. Savage 2 was by far the best for pvp i've ever played. Also the skill cap for S2 was crazy, as the higher skilled player continuously got more ahead, which made them even stronger. In S2, i once had a game of 70 kills, 0 deaths.
none of these are hack nslash
Are you serious? That's all they are. The whole point of these games is to hack and slash your opponents, hence the name 'Hack and slash'
These are more hack and slash than the sort of game that normally gets put in that genre.
Athletic Sloth Hack-and-slash games are weapon-based beat-em-ups with a high emphasis on combat, bladed weapons, daggers, and such, are not a requirement.
Most of these games are either action-adventure games or regular beat-em-ups. (Holy shit, that's a lot of - signs)
"Otacon" Emmerich So these are hack and slash games
updated my list: Top 10 Hack and Slash Games / Best Melee Combat Games (of all time, 2014)
They were released almost at the same time, although Severance was first announced in 1996.
to bad that mount and blades multiplayer is almost dead
You wish ;)
Tried Warband? Warband is still going on
yeah could not find many servers
There are MANY! I play it weekly and there are just enough servers.
ok
Also, I guess I was slightly incorrect in my definition. Action RPGs can also fall under hack and slash games, but that type of game isn't what this list is about.
"the term "hack and slash" is either used to describe a sub-set of action RPGs which emphasize melee combat as a core element of the gameplay experience, or a beat 'em up action game that emphasizes weapons-based combat" - From Wikipedia.
WTF!!! There is no devil may cry games!!!
My favorite game in this melee genre is S4 League. It has gun combat too, but a lot of people play it as a melee-only game, they made a special mode for it after watching the community. Also you can mow down a bunch of gunners if all you have is melee weapons in a mixed game. Them with guns shiver!
edgy music
Aaaah I remember getting Die By the Sword for xmas yeeeeears and years ago
What a misleading title we got here
oh my god, this list is so so good, never expected to see Die By The Sword there, very very good work
no devil may cry??? it should be the top 1
Out of the Source SDK games, I only have Portal 1, and Pirates, Vikings and Knights 2 works fine with just that. For anybody wondering :)
I can understand that. While both games have a heavy focus on melee combat, Savage 2 is similar to World of Warcraft while Savage XR is similar to Quake 3 Arena. Savage 2 is an action RPG that's about mashing buttons and spamming abilities, Savage XR has an elegant, minimalistic combat, is arcadish and unforgiving.
While certain people might disagree with what Hack and Slash means, this review is at least coherent in itself. Good job! Features many unknown titles people don't know much about.

Top ten hack & slash games without any hack & slash game. Just wow.
i am saying that 'beat-em-ups' and 'hack-and-slash' are all types of games within the 'action' genre. and that in the right perspective, many games would qualify as 'hack-n-slash' that arent on this list, and are more simple to control. im not quite sure why everyone here hates what im saying. lol
to clarify the game that 'defines' the 'press x to win' genre is dynasty warriors, IMO. and it has a relatively high skill curve in pvp when parries are taken into account and timing of attacks. just because you dont control your dominant hand with buggy mouse controls doesnt mean its skill-less
Severance definitely deserves a remake. It had an excellent combo system, choice between 4 characters with different abilities and gamestarts and dismemberment.
Too bad the graphics don't do the game justice anymore like they used to when the game came out.
Cursed Crusade graphics and Severance mechanics and gameplay = rocks
Rune and Blade of Darkness are by far the best imho. Not only my fav hack and slash games, but some of my fav games PERIOD. \m/
And Dark Messiah of Might and Magic had the best singleplayer of all games I have ever played. Story and Combat was perfect and on high difficulty the campaign wasn't short at all.
Mount & Blade: Warband is indeed one of the best games ever. But not just for it's combat mechanics.
The recently released "Chivarly: Medieval Warfare" is quite arcade and fun, about as bloddy as Rune (you can cut off limbs), though not as fluent in the action (got some cooldowns and mouse movement restrictions). If you want some mindblowing fast paced melee action that takes months to get good at, then there's no way around Jedi Knight and especially Savage XR which is known for its legendary melee duel competitions. :)
trust me, many gamers are falshed. some devs call diablo3 a 'hacknslash', but so far its just rpg.
Video maker explained well HnS: no auto aiming, manual attacks. Diablo3 have targetted combat system, as well as levels matters too much.
Thank you! Finally someone that recognized Jedi Outcast for how awesome the multiplayer content is. God I miss those days when the game was still so alive...
Shadow of Rome's gladiator parts were one of my favorite parts in a Hack and Slash game, but I think it was only singleplayer.
To put anyone's minds at easy about the 'cons' shown for Mount & Blade Warband the bugs in the singleplayer campaign are few and far between. The game only has a few bugs (what games don't?) but most people don't experience them and if they do they don't even know it since it doesn't really have an impact on the game at all. As for character progression's lengthy road there are tonnes of ways to level your character and companions with most actually being fun to do. Level-ups are just a bonus.
I feel like this video should be remade. Lots of new HnS games with tons of potential came out relatively recently, like War of the Roses or Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.
Chivalry and War of the Roses are part of my new list, check it our here: Top 10 Hack and Slash Games / Best Melee Combat Games (of all time, 2014)
They need to make more of these mouse aimed based melee multiplayer games.
Thanks for showing me those games :P and also thanks that u putted a lot of information in the discription :)
The "new" song's name is Clappy from Rob Simonsen.
I didn't say DMC doesn't require skill, it just wouldn't be good enough to make an exciting multiplayer. Have a look at the second game (Savage XR), it takes 2-3 years to master.
Savage XR is the only game on this list with a movement based combat system (if you don't know how to move, you basically can't damage your opponent) - fast paced, hard and fun gameplay are the result. The game is so fucking hard that it takes years to become a top player. Being a frontline warrior is just a part of the gameplay though, there are a lot easier tasks like scouting, gathering resources, attacking buildings etc that can be done by anyone. The game is very underrated indeed.
Dark Messiah an' Rune - the two best hack'n'slash games in ages
This list really should have been titled "Best Mouse Driven First Person Hack n Slash PC games." This list represents a very small subset of a broad genre. I personally would have had maybe two or three mouse hack and slash on my own list simply because I find it an incredibly clumsy and limiting input device for action games. Hack and Slash games range from Strider to Diablo, to Rune, to God of War, to Bayonetta, to Golden Axe, to DmC and everything in between.
Well, that's the most intelligent argument one got here, but still not justifying anything. Your key word here is driver. A word that have always meant a lot of things, that are here again, already established. In some languages it can mean even more, in French for example, driver also means conductor. The Hack and slash definition is restrictive, but not flawed as you can fit things in and fit the other in other categories. And finally a game can be issued of multiple genres.
Rune and Die by the Sword. Best games made! A good list you have put together here..
Goddman Severance blade of darkness, I searched so much for this game that I remember playing but forgot its name.
The two girlies fighting (two-handed) in the Severance section are actually from a mod. The models were hijacked from
Neverwinter Nights. How do I know this? I hijacked them. :)
God of war 1, 2, 3 and Ascension, Darksiders 1 & 2, Dante's Inferno. Those are your correct answers. Thank you for playing.
Seriously, when the name hack n slash is mentioned, the first game that comes (in a good or bad way) to the mind is god of war.
All these games I played besides Severance and Age of Chivalry. The ones that stood out to me were Rune, Savage, Mount and Blade, Jedi Outcast 2, and Die By The Sword (awesome).
Jedi Knight II had awesome singleplayer missions...
I agree that there are a lot of hack n slash games good out there, but one thing I am sure is that Rune is one fucking awesome game. One of the best games I've played all my life.
Pros:
1 . Solid melee attacks
- This make all the difference. You feel you're doing the attack. You'll start to note this on multiplayer.
2 . Diverse weapons
- Five swords, five axes and five hammers&maces.
There's no "best weapon". And most of the weapons are wisely balanced.
CONTINUE
Theoretically it should be right, it's also the reason why people are mistaken. But this is not so simple. The definition has already been established, so you can't just hop in and say "hey dude, the genre is hack and slash because you hack and slash, it's logical and I say so, fuck the police".
It's a pretty rare and limited subset of Hack and Slash games on this list. Even I have only played a couple.
i agree with this statement entirely. i would venture out and say that if the GAME is good enough, it doesnt NEED multiplayer? maybe a bit of a stretch, but ive played many quality single player games over and over again.
That one would have been on my list. I loved slicing and dicing with that Vorpal Blade. The combat system was simplistic but effective but where the game really shined was its setting. The real star of Alice is Wonderland and its denizens.
I'm not sure whether this what you're looking for, but the Painkiller serious ought to be good.
if you don't even know how a FPS is played with a joystick i suggest you go outside, introduce yourself to the first 3 people you see, and ask to go to their house and play their console. because you clearly haven't left the house in years. mind you, i am NOT a console gamer. i just don't think my input device makes me better than anyone else
Not sure if other people have already said this but if you go in hackin n slashin against experienced players in Mount and Blade multiplayer, you've got another thing comin to ya
Mount and blade is a hard game to master but fun when you get the hang of it.Anyway, the other games look interesting aswell
Yes please :-)
I love Madness Returns!
Sometimes I think the auto aiming makes hack n' slash games too easy...
I agree that Mount and Blade is fun, but each person has their own taste and opinion. I enjoy both game.
I am glad you know about Rune it is an underappreciated game
Read his reply. He didn't restrict the list to online hack and slash games just because his channel is about nothing else but online games (which is a wrong assumption anyway, otherwise all games would have to be free too). No, according to his rating criteria - which are focussed on gameplay only - offline games just didn't make it into the list. He did consider them all too.
>"Jedi Outcast"

theBlackOnes: Raarrgh!! tomorrow you're a Corned Beef!
theRedOnes: shut up Pork Chop!
sigh i can remember this song, it always played when i was young and looking at game videos on youtube :)
The bigger the weapon, the slower it is. So sometimes a smaller weapon and a good melee strategy, you can win a enemy player using a big one.
You can use enemy limbs as weapons. You can use torch as weapons. Though these two makes no significant damage. You can throw weapons.
And there are shields, which you cant use while using a big weapon.
So it's a balanced system, and it's not that complex.

"DMC would make terrible multiplayer games because their combat mechanics are too linear and dumb and involve auto aim."
I take it you've never played DMC in your life...
The criteria of a good Hack and Slash game are:
- no computer aided aiming, button mashing/smashing or "press X to win" moves
- precise and manually controlled combat, via a mouse
- fast paced real-time action
- human cunning, intelligence and skill (PvP)
- simple game mechanics, easy to learn but difficult to master
Thats why no DMC now stop complaining.
Uploaded on Nov 3, 2010
and yes, old games had more fun mechanics and smoothness... something hard to find in this QTE dumbed down era (mostly)
And I thought Treyarch only made the bad Call of Duty games..
My eyes have been opened.
Severance (Blade) and Dark Messiah are easily the best single player games on this list.
The Hack and Slash definition is fundamentally flawed. It's like calling Audi drivers "Drivers with Steering Wheel" and then being mad when Ferrari drivers are being put into that category too.
DMC may seem like mashing one button repeatedly to win, but it's far from that. You can barely survive doing so even on the easiest difficulty. The emphasis of DMC is evading, building combos, knowing how to approach more convoluted enemies. It should at least be above Rune here.
To quote myself, "..I may be slightly biased." :3
It may be that we're just looking for different things in games. I personally don't care about that kind of "background realism", because it's a multiplayer FPS. It would be nice, sure, but what I primarily care about is gameplay. Once you've gotten used to the combat mechanics in Chivalry, it can feel rather intense, especially at higher levels of play. It's the fast-paced clash of steel and sword that I love.
I mean originality of concept. The free-roaming, one man anarchy that can ACTUALLY take over the world.
Human Head Studios released Rune on Steam (June 13th) to advertise their upcoming Rune 2! Updated link in the description below :)
What?!? No Dark Cloud 2?
DARK CLOUD 2 FANS UNITE. Someone needs to make an RPG list with Dark Cloud 2 at the top!
Man, I like the the whole H&S idea but can't help but feel that the actual combat feel superficial at best based on this footage.
The new version of the video has now much better footage, check it out here: Top 10 Hack and Slash Games / Best Melee Combat Games (of all time, 2014)
