Sony A90K 42” OLED: is it Worth Buying?

  • Reviewing the Sony A90K OLED TV (42”). I’ve been using it over the last 5 weeks for gaming, movies and productivity, but how does it perform and is it worth buying for 2023? It’s got some great features including HDMI 2.1, 120hz, VRR and an impressive XR Upscaler. But it’s also lacking a few features that could make the LG C2 the better buy.

Great review. I've had this TV for about 3 months now and I do really like it. Two things to be weary of though. First, With 120 hz and VRR enabled, some PS5 titles will cause the TV to flicker when opening the apps and even at random times while playing. It's not a common occurrence, but does happen sometimes. So unless I'm playing a really gorgeous and graphically intensive game like Spiderman, Horizon, etc, I just have it set to 60 hz with VRR off and haven't noticed any differences personally in the games being any less smooth. Completely eliminates the weird flickering.
And second, if you plan on playing blu rays on the PS5 with this TV, it's kind of a hassle. With the PS5 on, it locks the screen into game mode, so you can't switch the picture setting to cinema or anything while watching a movie. Most of the time I'll just use the TV apps like Netflix, HBO, etc to watch a movie and I can switch then, but with my PS5 being my only blu ray player, if I want to watch something that I only have a physical disc version of, I'm locked into the game mode.
A couple small issues in the grand scheme of things, but stuff to be aware of.

This was one of my choices last year but I went with the 42 C2 due to the cheaper price, 1440p support and more HDMI 2.1 ports. The processing of the Sony looks really impressive but not enough to make up for the previously mentioned 3 setbacks.

Also, Sony only gives you TWO HDMI 2.1 ports, and one of those ports is the e-ARC. Incredibly frustrating for a so-called premium brand like Sony. Meanwhile, the C2 has four 2.1 ports and flawless VRR support out of the box.

Great review, SpawnPoiint. I recently bought a Sony A80K 55 inches TV for my new house entertainment device. (Can't wait, first house!) I would say all the features provided from the TV itself is more or less about every person's preferences. They may have some little or tiny cons in every model, but to me after been surveying so many type of TVs, A80K is my final decision. It has an overall brightness and with dolby vision / HDR features, i guess I'm more than enough satisfied for the product. I also gonna think about to use this TV as my WFH monitor though it may sounds crazy for 55 inches but I guess the productivity itself should be able to get the job done nicely. So far I've used the TV for gaming on PS5 and home office and things been really great!
I followed HDTVTest channel C2 guide for configuring the C3's picture, but not to the litter though.
Picture quality and colors are really superb and will ruin you, can't look at the other TV and monitors anymore, nothing beats it! Unlike previous models, this one can get really bright and you'll have no issues seeing in a bright room.
Sound is good imo, but not great. It has a lot of settings to test and that can be tiring. Tested only a little and settled on the standard settings because I didn't like the other options out of the box. I might give it another go in the future and do more testing.
Gaming mode is awesome, supports VRR, G-Sync, Free-Sync, ALLM and it is awesome for SDR (tested it with fighting games) and HDR gaming (tested it in COD MW2). I game for long hours and the TV doesn't get that hot. It is well ventilated.
It is light weight and I'm planning to desk-mount it.
Menus can be confusing at first, but it gets better over time. It has plenty of apps support.
When setting up for the first time, I panicked when I saw black lines on the screen and I started to believe I got a faulty one. After looking in the menus I found and used the built-in pixel cleaner feature under the support menu and that did the trick "phew"
If you have a C2, then wait if money is a factor in your decision. But if you have an older model or something else, f'ing go for it man!
I hope that covered it all, and plz ask me if I missed something.

The Asus ROG PG42UQ is what I have and I got it at launch with my RTX 4090 Strix OC/i9-13900KS/64GB DDR5-6400 build early this year.
It's the only true 42" 4k120/138oc'd Hz 16:9 OLED monitor with both DP1.4a and HDMI 2.1 ports on the market, not a TV with pseudo monitor like functions (LG C2/C3) and it's cost was pretty steep at $2k CAD. It's a great everyday use OLED monitor for productivity and solid for gaming, but it does have a matte coating rather than being glossy like a TV.
It's great during office hour use with plenty of ambient room lighting but it looks noticeable less vibrant at night compared to a C2 for media viewing and HDR gaming (not to mention it's much more expensive).
Worst of all: the HDR10 color gamut and tone mapping has been broken on this monitor (even with Windows 11 HDR mode and the calibration tool), and the 48" version is the same. It's a problem directly at the firmware level that requires patching (V033 being the latest with no update since the end of November 2022). It's very well documented online if you look it up - you'll find nothing but complaints about its washed HDR. Luckily they finally announced and confirmed that the new patch (V035) will be released at the end of the month to rectify this, it took nearly half a year to fix such a simple issue whilst having the gall to release a 27" 1440p240hz OLED of the same type with a much better HDR.

Most of the time the treble and midrange is fairly good for use in a study room but bass is far from sufficient. Back in 2014 I bought a flagship Sony XBR950 4K TV and it sported a 3.5" jack dedicated for connecting with a subwoofer. However, all TVs on the market today have been deprived of this convenience, forcing customers to get a sound bar. It is scandal.

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. 8 месяцев назад

YMMV. powered satellites will be fine for line-out. The reason soundbars are huge, is that subs need a lot of space. You can get 'tower' vertical subs, vertical speakers are space efficient compared to a bar/soundbar, but YMMV. People don't like tower speakers anymore.
The other issue is, Dolby Atmos with discrete speakers is not cheap hardware, compared to 5.1 or DTS. If you build a tower system, it needs like 4-5 speakers per tower for up/side/front firing, and there's an expensive amp required to power it and hook up all the cables around the room, sic. Soundbars don't need to do the full discrete speaker logic, so they can save money on the amps needed.
Fiber/SPDIF is usually better quality than the line-out, and works with Subs that have an amplifier anyway.
Arguably, inbuilt sound would be much, much easier to move the speakers into the stand. That would be the best option, but if they do this, they don't sell new TV's.
Part of the situation is, soundbars also force you to upgrade, i.e. Big Bars, Big TV, sic. I think LG made a G1 or G2 that had a soundbar built into their wall-mount unit, because they could make the unit thinner without speakers, and have a slimmer unit. The Samsung One Connect and Frame TV's also have an external power brick for handling cables etc.
The main reason why a TV can't deliver good sound, is that modern TV's are flat, there's nowhere for the sound to go except down, or into the back wall, because sound requires moving the air. You can't easily get around the distances needed to build a "bass" waveform. This is why the Sonos Arc/PlayBase has a bit of a chamber system to improve the bass response, it's also why soundbars get bulky/long. Surface area, matters. A cube box, is the more efficient system to move air, but you can cheat it a little by having the sound change direction or bounce around a little to increase energy over time.
If you can't move enough air, then you can't get volume or stereo separation, or get rid of the distortion of the frame / desk it's standing on. While it's possible to make TV sound better ... it's very difficult without putting large 'horn' shapes inside the back plastic of the TV, which would affect cooling and weight. The effect would probably work well, but you'd also get ugly frames / side channels for the air to pass through at the sides/top/bottom of the TV as well.

Great review and comparison. The price is the biggest factor for this TV for sure. My main TV is an LG C2 OLED and I really dislike webOS, so was heavily leaning toward the a90k over the LG offerings but couldn’t justify the price.
Today, I managed to pick this up brand new for AU$1596 including tax. The LG C2 is no longer available, and the C3 would have cost AU$2156.

@@jukebox2568 in terms of picture quality, and speaker sound, yeah I’m really stoked. Google’s OS is alright, fairly snappy but does have some annoying moments.
My biggest grievance with the a90k is that it’s a Sony, so presumably it would be the perfect TV for a PlayStation 5 Console. A couple of weeks after buying the TV, my PlayStation would stop transmitting sound randomly, and the only fix is to unplug the HDMI cable which is a major annoyance. I’d go so far as to say it’s a deal breaker.
And yes, it’s something to do with the TV and the 120hz HDMI mode with a ps5 attached. I don’t have the issue on my living room LG C3 at 120hz, and my PC that is connected to the a90k never drops sound even with 120hz mode enabled.

LG requires differently Calibrating for ANIME, GAMING, SPORTS, SDR & HDR Movies. If calibrated well, then surely LG OLED from C1 to C3 supercede any perfectly-calibrated SONY OLEDS in terms of Picture Clarity, Sharpness, Color Accuracy, Motion and Input Lag.
But Out-of-the Box LG is shockingly disappointing most of the times and SONY is Stunningly Mesmerizing out-of-the box.

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. Год назад

@@bivv93 no, that’s if you use the AI optimising interpolation. The Anime/Gaming mode isn’t a thing, unless you have specific modes and android/TV apps that could take advantage of them.
As for out of box calibrations with Sony, they’re just as flawed as the LG. Especially on the C2 and C3 and the J & K series. You still have to modify the default saturation and motion interpolation default as it looks like trash with HDR on both models. You might not notice the Sony image problems until you compare before and after, but it’s still noticeable.
This is adjustable with some fine tuning but skin and hair just looks like people are airbrushed oranges on the Sony defaults. Wrinkles drift, textures like road and walls turn into clouds due to heavy interpolation and AI optimisers, etc.
After all, the modes that you calibrate, are the picture modes you choose from in the display settings, also require the TV to switch into HDR or Dolby Vision modes etc.
      If you do calibrate,
It takes a few hours to properly calibrate, and you redo the calibration every few years with OLED as the display refresh can affect color balance / brightness levels over time.
LG is IMO more reliable than the Sony, as it has an inbuilt calibration patter generator, allowing you to skip an expensive Pattern Generator that supports Dolby Vision and DV 120Hz support, sic.
The calibration is a bit difficult for a beginner, but it gets easier to follow a guide to calibrate the big 4 ie you only have to calibrate one HDMI input device with SDR, HDR Day, HDR Night, and Dolby Vision for the native screen, then export the calibration to the other 4 inputs.
Most of the other display modes/picture settings won’t be used, especially on consoles. They will be used for internal apps like Netflix, broadcast TV, etc so it’s key to follow a guide the first time.
You can also use the internal video player with a looping HDR video or Dolby Vision video, which is necessary to get the TV and IPG working, and to save the proper settings from the calibration results.
To calibrate HDR gaming and Dolby Vision for gaming, you need a console and HDR game running in the background for the overlay Calibration to work with the inbuilt IPG.
You can also calibrate SDR game modes, but very few apps/games will ever switch over to SDR game modes ie Nintendo Switch or Wii/Xbox 360 devices that don’t recognise HDR modes.

@@Toliman.you're the only one who says this, everyone says that Sony has better images even by default, it's part of Sony's master series, meaning that the images are already calibrated for good viewing

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. 8 месяцев назад

@@gianni9628 Sure, but most OLEDs are calibrated, in their 'theater' or 'filmmaker' modes.
They come pre-calibrated now, but you can check reviews to see what that looks like out-of-box. Is it worth $1000 more for this ? not really. As always, reviewing and checking the TV in person, you're making a big purchase. What you like, is what you like. There's just not a lot of advantage. I've owned lots of Sony, LG, Samsuns, Hisense, and lots of monitors, etc. It always gets better in ~5 years. Nearly always.
Is the Sony chip better than the LG Ai chips ? Not especially. It's usually hard to notice IMO from seeing store models and the new QD-OLED or the hex/tri-tile, the curved QD OLEDS et al. in person. Even MiniLED is doing quite well compared to QD-OLED and OLED. Plus, there's some incredible 75" $500 TV's, which you'd expect to be awful, suffice for most people's netflix/youtube watching.
The Master series isn't a huge improvement for HDR/DV modes because it's not improving the content as much as the LG/Samsung's chips are. That's just competition.
And, lots of people get caught out when Sony fumbles their product lineup because they don't have anything new to add. So they have to waste time and make up new things to add. LG and Samsung are infamous with this, i.e. "Wallpaper mode" or "Frame TV's. Gallery Mode. Solar Powered Remote controls.
Sony make good products ... but they don't make all their products good. Some are just 6-8 year old products with 3 new features, where they've not innovated, they just let the ball drop because they don't want to reinvent or fix their old mistakes. So they Skip a year or three, until the R&D catches up and their "flagship" suddenly gets a massive upgrade.
Every brand has their odd-year, because designing these chipsets takes 3-5 years sometimes. So you need a middleware improvement, a fitness app, or ... solar powered remote controls. Because it's going to take another 3-4 years to get the next product ready.
The Sony processing is "better" out of the box, but that's not worth being 30% over the price for the same OLED panel. You can buy the calibration software, and a i1 Display Pro calibrator off eBay/amazon for less than the price difference in some places. And there's usually a youtube guide on how to calibrate the TV, because even the calibrators may not know what's changed on the new models.
The problem is really, you need to see these TV's in a side-by-side to notice. Especially comparing Calibrated/uncalibrated HDR or DV modes. It's sometimes 'worse' in the calibrated mode, until you adjust the lighting of the room, and it feels more natural.
Reviews test how accurate that mode is, or how skewed the 'vivid' / default mode is, because that's the one you get when you watch actual broadcast TV on it. The Sony is semi-egregious, but they know their audience. The LG is now following the Samsung and Sony, I had to set up someone's LG C2 and C3 recently, which has that awful motion blur + vivid default on broadcast TV that makes news shows look like 480p youtube
Out of the box, would you spend $500 more for a pre-calibrated TV ? or would you buy a $800 cheaper TV, with the same panel, better performance.
Is it necessary ? not really. If you use the rtings settings, they usually have a lot of good advice, especially for beginners to the settings. Especially MPEG noise / Blur.
If a review measures default mode calibration, they may also only focus on the 'filmmaker' or movie mode, since the new TV's are a bit more difficult. It's still something you can do at home.

Great review. Got this TV refurbished for half the price. For some reason when i plug in my sony x800 bluray player it converts from HDR to SDR for everything. It is connected to my yamaha receiver via the e arc. The receiver is not 4k compatible but with my previous lg oled i was able to bypass this by running an additional hdmi cord into the sony x800 player and then the tv ( which i have also done for the sony A90K ). What can i do?

Hello @SpawnPoiint I bought the 42" A90K a yeah ago. I can't complain about the video quality or sound for my purposes, but I've experienced so many user experience frustrations with the unintuitive navigation with so many options I don't need.
I'm not a gamer. I don't watch TV. I stream Netflix, sometimes RUclips, Amazon, Disney, etc. I just have time for basic consumption.
Even small details that I find incredibly annoying: when I perform a simple RUclips search at night when my boyfriend is sleeping and over the speakers I get an unnecessary Alexa type voice announcing "Okay, here's what I've found!" It makes me want to sell it and buy something else. Am I missing something? Any recommendations?

Nice 42" OLED. I've been considering the C2 42" or the 48" as a monitor but mainly for gaming. Have you tried using a 48" as a daily monitor?

Are there any smaller OLEDs that would fit on my desk on a multi monitor setup

I own the 42C2 that I paired with my PS5 and an RTX 4090 and I couldn't go back to a smaller size for gaming even if I had to. The picture quality and HDR on this thing still leave me awestruck. The monitor market isn't in a really good state right now, and unless you're ready to pay a lot of money for one of the OLED 1440p monitors, 42 inch OLED TV's are just a better deal across the board. Regarding your conclusions, I do agree : the LG is definitely better when it comes to gaming whereas the Sony is preferable if you plan to consume a lot of content that needs to be upscaled. The 42C2 also handles burn-in a bit more better apparently if we look at some durability tests, but I would still consider getting another monitor aside for desktop usage.
