As a short rider that usually commutes in town, here are my thoughts after riding with it for a couple of months in town and the mountains, as well as what Yamaha added to the SP version for an extra $1600.

slipper clutch is for preventing your engine from over revving when you drop it in a lower gear at high RPM and drop the clutch. The 2021+ MT09 has a quickshifter up and down so you can shift up and down without clutch regardless. The little arrows on your dash will change to green when the parameters are met to use the quickshifter.

The physical clutch unit itself has a ramp system that assists clamping the plates together under high torque (acceleration) and a ramp that assists spreading the plates apart under reverse torque (wheel driving the engine faster than the engine is turning). Trouble with the "assist" function is if you're into drag racing, it's near impossible to get a hard launch without looping the bike or bogging the engine.
The quickshifter is the electronic gizmo that interrupts ignition for a few milliseconds while the transmission is swapping a gear, also snaps throttle open downshifting to match RPM appropriately for seamless downshift (when throttle is completely closed).

It’s pretty cool seeing you comfortable on a bike you have to tiptoe. With riding boots I barely flatfoot the 32.8” seat height of the 890, and that makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. So seeing you go beast mode on two baggers, a big 1250 GS adventure and this MTO9 is well, definitely bada$$! Keep up the good work

Interesting vid, carolyn. I always tell new riders, it's very important to get a bike that fits you. The "fit" is not so much in how well you can flat foot the bike, but more importantly how comfortable your legs and knees are when your foot are on the pegs. Anyway, ride safe, god bless u.

    Hi, and greetings from Portugal.
I also have a 2021 MT09-SP (my first bike) and I like it a lot. I'm writing just to explain you how you can fix the blinkers when they go out of the socket (I had the same problem...). You simply pull the blinker out moving it up and down simultaneously until it fits again. This is basically a system to avoid damaging the blinkers if you hit something.
Since I'm at this, I will aso add that the quick-shifter (system used to automatically shift the gears up) is really amazing. Just one caveat: it does not work well in first gear, just 2nd gear and beyond. In addition, the engine must be revving at at least 2500-3000 rpm. Just give a touch upward in the pedal *keeping the throttle open, as is*. When you shift down you should do the opposite: give a touch down in the pedal *with the throttle fully closed*. In both cases, do no touch the clutch.
    Regards and ride safely.
    José

I really liked your review, the 09's are priced accordingly because they come with better components compared to the 07. I own a FZ07 and don't feel offended by hearing it feels cheap compared to bikes that cost 3- 4 thousand dollars more. That gap can be closed a considerable amount if some of those savings were reinvested in the suspension. I like them all myself.

Great review as always. Not sure why so many aren't complaisant with having just the things that rider's really want to know, but all the silly details don't make the time you have anymore enjoyable. As Yamaha's aren't the least expensive bike's I figure it gives them assurances that they are getting the most out of their money. Not that this has ever been a budget sport ever. Just buying really good tires for any of my bikes cost more than steel belted radials for my Civic. That's all the way around. Have a great week Doodle. Happy New Year and safe travels.

I did see your vid on the Honda 650r, and like you mentioned, one can take a naked to the track. It just doesn't look/feel the same. The MT-09 is a really light bike for its engine size and you can definitely feel that lack of weight, just sitting on one in the dealership (just last week). The rider position feels really great too. I was smiling looking down at the tank because it does look ridiculously wide but that is part of the brilliance of this bike. I have to wonder if Doodle ever got the chance to run that engine in the upper rpm ranges because the MT-09 is said to be an absolute rocket ship. The Yammie engineers put in the overtime designing this. Total weight and distribution were their strong points of focus. The way the exhaust is designed puts the center of gravity extremely low. That coupled with the engine layout I can only imagine how balanced and light it feels. Not my type of bike, but some day (come on winning lottery ticket) I could see adding a naked to the fleet. 1- when the Honda 50 came out it was originally for smaller people. I other words, the Japanese. In fact, I lost touch after they started build heavies, but most before were for people maybe 5'5" ot so -
2- For Yamaha, or anyone of them, i left a note on instagram asking when do they feel they will start making adjustable seats. ( Duh? )
3- They who are smart enough to listen to their consumer voices will be the leaders in the market -

Hi! Thanks for a great channel! What's your opinion, if I can flatfoot (barely, but still can flatfoot) at CB650R, what would that translate into for the MT-09SP? Is that slightly tip-toe or very much tip-toe? I think the seat shape determines a lot. I used to have T-Max scooter and while the seat was lower than than the CB650R, the seat was so wide so it was 'a pain' in city traffic as I really had to tip-toe. I would hope the MT-09 is close to the CB650R ? ? What do you all think?

  • @cprn.
    @cprn. 2 года назад +27

4:44 Don't focus on moving the filling gun away from the tank, instead focus on lifting the tip up so that it's vertical. This way, even if you do it extremely slow, droplets either go back into the nozzle or run down the metal pipe part and land on the rubber ring thingy. When it's vertical you can move it away safely.
And another free but unrelated tip:
This might sound cheap (pejorative) but there's a ton of fuel you paid for still in the hose. Draining it every time I fill my cheap (ameliorative) MT07 saves me about 20% gas money. Tested. Literally. With spreadsheet and everything.

Have to say that the refresh looks awesome, and I really wish the SP was around when I picked up the '09 because the suspension on the '17 leaves a lot to be desired. The cheapest cartridge / shock kit totals around ~1.8K USD so the SP is a GREAT deal.
The MT07 and MT09 are great, fun bikes. Miss the exhaust note of the 07.

@@adriantroalic9298 my girlfriend rides on her own bike. I don't have any issues with the seat, given my weight of ~150lbs with gear on, but I'm also not doing any long riding. It's definitely a lot more comfortable than my R6.

I'm with you, I have the 17, the suspension became OK when I adjusted it properly instead of the dealer settings where it was all over the place. Looking at this 2021, the front end and exhaust look so much worse!

@@psmith6166 I love the look of the akra exhaust, reminds me of something that'd be on a newer R1.
Although I do wish there was a dual-rear exhaust like on the ~09-11 R1s

I had the MT-09 Us based version. No SP. it was high riding and I’m short at 5’8”. The suspension got wonky on a few occasion. I bought it for the power delivery which is exceptional. and it’s safety features. Which are excellent. Sold it

I was so excited to see this, the MT-09 is at the top of my new bike list! A video comparing it to your street triple would be cool, I feel like they are competitors in a kind of niche "medium displacement naked triple" category.

How many times have the front indicators popped out ? Noticed early on that it can happen easily. Can see it in this video. Just putting a cover on and off can do it.

Good to see a revue that is not all about pulling wheelies and top speed. seems like the preload on the rear suspension is higher than it needed to be. Lifting the bike off the side stand and sitting on it usually drops the tail by an inch or so. I have to wonder how you would rate long distance comfort compared to a "Bagger" . In my expeariance riding off road bikes at speed, higher up means more wind noise and pressure.

I just test rode an MT-10SP. Possibly one of the most awesome and scary machines I've ever ridden. If it wasn't so tall I'd say go ride that, I'm 6'2 and 280lbs so no problem for me. In A mode and traction 3 or excuse me, WTF mode, it was how do I keep this front wheel on the deck. Solved that by riding in B mode or I'm a bit nicer mode but the front end still comes up, just not as high. Awesome and scary at the same time but the fear factor was eased by the handling provided by the Ohlins Electronic suspension all round.

Good Job Doodle as usual. I am an old guy with a 29" inseam and I just got a Honda CRF300L Rally and the seat height on it is 34.6" So I understand what your talking about ridding a tall bike. I love the bike and am hoping that I can get on when I have the back loaded down with luggage. I may have to do some yoga to high kick my leg over the seat. I am fine once I am on the bike but getting on is kind of a challenge. LOL

John, I have the same problem, not because of my height, but my age. It's hard to get my leg that high. Stretching & kicking exercises help.
Another thing I've done, is to park along side a curb, or a good sized (not wobbly) rock. That gives you a boost of a couple of inches.

The MT-09 and bikes in the 1 liter + sport category share a powerband that is essentially two tiered. Tier one you ride under 7000 rpm, around town, on highways, twisties, etc. in a casual manner. The under 7K tier easily gets the job done for every type of day to day riding, including more spirited riding as well. Tier two is the world above 7000 where most fear to go and where the naturally daring want to be all the time. This isn't a review on tier two and I'm glad it isn't. Many times people watch a review and it's some hooligan dragging knee and wheelying out of corners. I like that Doodle highlights the practical stuff over things like lean angle. I have to admit that I did get a change to wring out an MT-09 not too long ago and I can say, the quickshifter is awesome for doing those really nice 3-4 gear long wheelies. Plenty flickable for the twisties too :)

Replying to a two year old post, heh.
This is super interesting, I've never heard this before. I have a 2023 MT 09 SP and to give you an idea of what kind of rider I am, I have lift control on. To your RPM point, I definitely ride the majority of my time under 5k, and do it with a huge smile on my face. The screen starts blinking at me if I go above 6k-ish+, but it redlines at 11.5k. It never made sense to me why it starts giving a visual indicator at just over half of what it's capable of. But even in 6th gear, I rarely have to shift down to do a quick acceleration to pass, it just launches, every time, every gear, every RPM. I love it.
