The world journalists agree. The MT09 is built to a price. Thanks to the Duke 7/890, Yamaha has pulled their socks up and the 2021 model now slots between those two bikes. But I found the torque and gearing of the MT09 were mint. That’s the only parts of the bike that I like when compared to my Street Triple R.
@@toofastnobrakes i noticed a bunch of RUclipsrs/reviewers blast Honda bikes for being "dull" despite not having many if any flaws. Like they hate bikes that just work 🧐
I own a MT09 SP, and let me tell you, I cant even pull my riding pants up because of the excitement thrill every time I’m gonna ride.. yes its not a top speed machine but it makes you smile and forget all problems in your life.. ❤️
Same here buddy. My only mod was changing the stock handlebars to LSL X00. The stock ones just didn't feel right to me. Now it's as close to perfect as it could ever be for my type of riding.
Most guys going out to their 1st, 2nd or even 5th track day won't even notice the stuff I'm talking about anyways - so honestly it's still a great bike.
@@yammienoob Fair enough, I'm just thinking the suspension would be more than adequate for your average person wanting to have some fun in the twisties. Mind you i currently own an MT-07, which i heard the suspension is terrible. I find it to be pretty good for the street. I came from a 2015 ZX6R 636 with showa front forks before that. if you not trying to drag a knee around every corner, its fine.
@@yammienoob Exactly. I've got the XSR900 version of the bike, and it's an absolute fucking blast to ride. Brings me smiles all day long. I'm like the opposite of you; I'm not looking for a specialized tool for a specific use, I'm looking for a fun all-around street bike. I'm not looking to take it to the track - I mostly ride around town, commute occasionally, and take on the twisty backroads on the weekend at not even close to a 10/10 pace, and it's absolutely great for all those use cases. The XSR is torquey and fast and perfectly adequate in corners, and it makes me smile all day long all the places I take it. Maybe I'm not skilled or aggressive enough to feel the shortcomings of the suspension out on the backroads, but but you shouldn't be pushing it that hard on the street anyway, and like I said, I'm not using it as a track bike. I will say, I added some CRG shorty levers and they really improved the clutch and brake feel IMO.
You say that because you never had a chance to ride a Mt09sp(Olhins shocks) steering dumper, Ecu remap, homemade exhaust, Brembo Corsacorta with metallic wiring, R1 discs. Abs interruptor for racing. I agree with some part of it..but calling it silly bike??? It feels silly when you say it's not worth to tune it for track..go and search the net to see what you can do with this superNaked beast. Mine has mt10s for breakfast. Rsv4- bmw s1000r - gxsr owners look at me as an alien and probably think it's not worth it blablabla I've spent around 3 weeks to tune it and approx 2000$.
I know this is 3 yrs old and I cant figure how the heck I missed it! I bought my first of the mt09 family in 2017 when I was a young lad of 63yrs old. I am 70 now and have a 2021 mt-09 sp. If you cant understand the fun of a bike like the mt09 maybe you belong on a Grom? I have been on the road since 1970 and enjoyed every bike I've owned...never owned an HD, rode one for a couple of hours in the early 70's and that was enough. Maybe the MT doesnt push all the right buttons for you, but this thing takes fun to a whole new level. I can cruise around like a sane senior, with the cruise on and just enjoying the ride. When I get tired of that I just twist the throttle and instantly I'm a delinquent senior! I love it...most fun I have ever had on 2 wheels. Maybe when I'm old I'll get an HD...on second thought a URAL Patrol with a dummy machine gun mounted on the hack would be fun...bet I would be the only kid in town with one🤣
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree, being 55 years old I have ridden a ton of different types of bikes. The 09 carves the turns well enough unless you're trying to be a street Rossi. It has a comfortable riding position. I put a Conti TKC 70 on the rear and Shinko trail master on the front, so it does extremely well on smoother dirt/gravel surfaces. Done a couple of 1000 mile rides through all types of terrain and the motocross feel of the ergos makes it super versatile for low speed maneuvers and light canyon carving. All in all, if you only have one bike, this is the one.
cannot agree more. I do the same thing with my MT09, the versatility it provides and the pure psuedo mechanical feels that it provides is downright grin worthy.
@@NGeese does anyone REAL actually win the Giveaway bikes?? a number of companies were caught out doing these giveaway's to actual people they know so the bike went straight back to them and they pocketed money from all entries etc i don't trust these online Giveaway's (not saying this ones a con or anything) just have personal reservations on them that's all.
I love my 2015 FZ-09. Yeah, its has a lot of power, and at 68 years old I find myself doing things I probably shouldn't do. But for me its a fine street bike, not counting a sucky seat which I changed out. And with all the fun it provides, while giving me 50+mpg and low maintenance, its perfect for me. If you don't want all that power, then simply don't twist the throttle so much.
I think it’s funny that you’ve brought this up. I have a 2018 MT09 myself that I use to occasionally commute on. It really is A LOT of bike to handle every day, and regretfully I find myself incapable of NOT twisting the throttle like a maniac because the MT09 just begs for the rider to do so. Triple digit speeds are a near daily occurrence on the MT09, and the majority of the time i do wish I had just gotten the mt07 instead, because the 09 is just just so speed encouraging and it’s only a matter of time before my license gets taken away because of it. Great video, you hit the nail right on the head with this one
get good at self control and managing risks or don't ride imo. I keep seein teddy bears and ribbons and shit on this light pole that split some kid in half running from the cops a few years back. guess he didn't want to go to jail and lose his license.
same for me. one second Im doing 100kmph, then I want to pass a car and lo and behold its doing 180kmph :/ and it doesnt even feel like im going that fast
I tracked my MT-09 SP yesterday, and it was awesome with the suspension dialled in. Lots of 3rd and 4th gear power wheelies. It absolutely shined on a technical track. LOVE IT!!
For the street I think it has more than what you need, not all of us want track days, I prefer grabbing my dirt bike and hitting some hills, but each to their own. As far as it goes the mt09 is a damn good bike in my opinion.
As a 22 year old with 2019 MT-09 as my second motorcycle, I totally agree with this video. Though I love the bike and sometimes still can't believe I was able to get one, I feel that subtle reminder of the plastics, the thrill over performance, the gosh darn hernia of a seat.... I definitely find myself tempted to try more, yet luckily with the help of the community I've been much more responsible, although maybe more because its a major mode of transportation and I can't afford to replace it..
I absolutely love mine. Yes it gets squirrelly cornering hard, the throttle is still a little choppy in sport mode, and the top speed is only about 135. BUT, it's a torque monster for the size and price and it's an absolute blast to ride everytime I hop on it. It's very comfortable and I rode it from PA to the Tail of the dragon and back and had no complaints. I Would I like to have a Super Duke 1290 one day though.
I've had the opportunity to ride my brother's a few times. He had it remapped and put a better shock on the back...in the end, it is a great bike with more than enough power for the street...plenty of stomp...good for hooning it up for sure.
I might agree in afew years, second year of having my licence and just bought myself a 2021 mt09 and I'm god damn loving it! Checking back in in 5 years when im on a 401 husky
I just bought a 2018 MT09 as a second bike to an Electra Glide police. I love the Yamaha for everything it does, that the Harley doesn't. I'm 58 and have been riding on the street for 40 years with LOTS of miles behind me. I rode sport bikes when I was in my 20s and wanted to recapture that sorta ride without having to be contorted and uncomfortable on an R6 or GSXR. the MT09 fits my needs perfectly... Okay, it's not a race bike with turn signals, and I'm good with that. But it does have better corning ability, and acceleration than the HD, which is why I bought it.
I completely understand your point about wanting something more refined, it's fair. There are different type of riders, some prefer brute power, others prefer a more refined machine that can bring joy riding at a slower pace.
The CP3 bikes are interesting. with the exception of the Tracer and to a lesser extent the Nikken, they are just unspecialized and kind of wild. Had the conversation with a guy who has a Vulcan and couldn't explain the purpose of my XSR900. Not great on the highway, too powerful for in town riding, not built for the track. And that's it's best feature. I can take my XSR anywhere and just do whatever and only have one bike.
get a windshield. thats all I needed to do for highways, track can be tricky but still insane, fast and wild. this bike is exactly how I like my ladies xD
Meet a dude that has owned 43 Motorcycles. He said the Fz09 was in his top 5. Different strokes for different folks in the end. I like building it to my specifications. I feel the power is worth the attention to the suspension and add where Yamaha is not.
Ok with that. I mean standart MT-09, but MT-09 SP Edition is one of the best bikes Yamaha has ever produced. Öhlins solves suspension related problems on that SP one.
XSR900 owner here. I bought the XSR because I wanted a powerplant different than the traditional high-revving 4 cylinder and the triple in the MT09/XSR900 fit the bill. I also prefer the XSR's looks over the MT. Plenty of power to keep a smile on my face but I'd have to agree that on the street its irrelevant (but so are many sportbikes). However its nice to have that power on tap for those glorious open roads or wherever you can rip on it safely. The triple does make for an awesome streetlight to streetlight type of bike. XSR is also comfortable "enough" for the long rides but could benefit from a better seat no doubt. I've taken the bike through some twisties and it does just fine. I'd say for a first or second bike or someone who just wants ONE bike, you can't go wrong with the MT09/XSR900. The XSR900 is my first street bike purchase and so far I love the bike. I try and find every excuse I can to ride it. Also A mode is just stupid and should be avoided. I love death machines for some reason.
MT-09 owner here. I actually agree with most all of your points. I’m looking to get back into something European next year, but I have really, really enjoyed my time with the MT. One thing that I think gets especially overlooked when talking about bike power is how relative that can be when you take rider weight into account. I’m not here to say that it doesn’t have plenary of power, but as a 270ish lb guy, the power and torque feels very comfortable for me under daily riding. I can image lopping off 100+ lbs would make a pretty big difference though.
As a 170lb MT 09 owner, I will say it's still reasonable enough to commute on, but goodness it will try to kill you if you give it the chance. 30-100mph is just stupid😅
Master wheelie machine.... Traction control off ... B mode to tame fueling.... Ready for balance point all day if you're a skilled rider ....its all about proper throttle modulation....
Bro, I love this bike, it takes me from work and back home with a big smile on my face, and it does the twistys just fine if I ride within comfort level
I own that exact bike and I agree with your comments about it not being very 'refined" but the power definitely isn't too much for the street that's what makes it fun.
Of course, you are welcome to your opinion, but the MT-09 just ticked all of the boxes for the bike I wanted. I was trying to talk myself into getting a KTM 890, Streetfighter V2, or a Street Triple. Performance wise they are great, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one with all of the quality control issues. It leads me to think they don't know what they're doing or how to build a quality bike. I've owned Yamahas before, and they've earned my trust. One month in, the seals are still tight, bolts are all there, fluids remaining in their resevoirs, and it's a joy to ride.
Do you think the changes to the 2021 MT09 make it a better overall bike? The new Triumph Trident looks like it's the perfect street bike, good price, good suspension, not insane power.
It's the perfect city bike, takes off from the line faster than anything around, and it takes the hard bumps with ease. I do admit the twisties get a little sketchy with the stock rear shock, but man do I love it. Good points though and nice video!
trust me with enough practise and trail breaking , those twisties feels like home for this bike. Wont deny I had some close calls but I shouldnt have rode this bike like I did on the R6
As a previous track racer and gymkhana racer who likes to commute on a bike, I agree with you 100%. If paying extra time and money for the repairs is not a problem, European bikes do feel more premium. Having said that, I still choose XSR900 as my commute bike. I don't like unreliable bikes for commuting, and I don't like to keep multiple bikes in my garage.
If you are rolling down the road and having fun it doesn't matter what you ride...just ride!!! I appreciate the information...all information is good. It's okay to have another opinion. In fact, it's healthy! Keep it up!
You dislike the Mt-09 for all the right reasons. I still love mine, but you definitely hit the mark on it. Cheap, reliable, and it checks a lot of boxes if you're willing to tinker with it a little.
I'm currently working on getting my xsr900 to work for track and have to agree with most of what you're saying here. Would be a hell of a lot easier and more cost effective to just get a track focused bike but I still get a massive grin on my face when I pass a "proper" sports bike on my retro yammie lol.
I love my 2021 MT-09. But I couldn't agree more with the statement you made about when you're on a MT-09, it makes you wanna do stupid stuff and act on bad impulses. I really have to watch myself when I'm riding because I feel like I become somewhat reckless on my MT-09. Maybe I shouldn't own one either. But I can't let it go because it's such a fun bike.
I have been riding motorcycles for 50 years and I have had over twenty different motorcycles, including a GSXR 1000, Yamaha Vmax and a ZX14, and I totally agree with your assessment of the MT09. I have ridden the MT03, MT07, MT09 and the MT10. The suspension is poor on the MT09. the brakes are weak, it doesn't handle that well, it shifts hard, it is plasticky and the power delivery reminds me of a twin cylinder Cushman. With experience, you grow out of motorcycles like the MT09. The MT07 and MT09 are for kids that like to speed from stoplight to stoplight and do wheelies. I am like you in that I prefer a more sophisticated motorcycle. People buy the MT09 because it gives them the most HP for their buck, but the more you ride, the more you realize it is boring to go fast all the time and having fun is not all about how fast you can go from 0 to 60mph. I know I had a ZX14, and it was actually a quite boring motorcycle because you could never use the power unless you were on an open road with no cops around, and that is hard to find anymore. You don't need 115HP, especially in the city. You tend to use the power, and suddenly you are going 100MPH in a 60MPH zone without even realizing it, and pretty soon your drivers license is in jeopardy. You may not get caught at first, but eventually you will. I know!
Same story for me, zx14r was insane and eventually your walking ,that sort of power ruins you for every other bike ,love the torque and weight of the mt09 2023.
You and I see motorcycles in a very different way. I used to be into cruisers and am starting to change my mind. I'm now leaning towards adventure bikes. I'm really liking the new Triumph Tiger 850 sport. It would have to be loaded with all options for my tastes. I commute and go sight seeing and go shopping on my bike. I NEVER need a race bike.
Yes you should not listen two of their video back to back. Their opinion change bike to bike. It’s a business and they have to write content, they don’t do this - only - for fun.
I mean he's saying it doesn't do it for him. He's not constantly cracking dank nooners, or getting crazy on the street (might be some history there) so this is more then what he needs. If he wants to go fast, which this does, he wants to do it on the track. Which this doesn't completely fit.
I've owned a 2017 mt09 it's a really fun bike when you want to ride like an ass and hooning around but every time you want to ride seriously on the twisty road it leaves you to desire more because the bike doesn't feel well cornering in higher speeds or it's really annoying bike when you just want to get home after a long day or early in the morning because the throttle is too snappy and clunky it makes my 2017 rsv4 feel like a totally reasonable commuter bike. Mt09 is just a toy bike with cheap thrills it gets boring very fast and you left wanting something more dedicated and better, it's just like a supermoto bike it's fun to have it as a side bike but for everyday use it sucks.
@@matt7984 I like his personality like many of us but there's a lack of consistency on some subject. We suggest some improvement on this topic. They give advice on what to buy it's not only chilling hanging with yammy about bikes, people make loans following his advices.
I own and MT-09 (and R1250GS, previously owned gsxr 600,r6, 790). I've been wanting to get rid of it virtually every after ride since 2015 when I got it for 6K until recently. It has 32K miles now. What I hate about it is corner entry, mid corner, exit. So I agree with you 100% but I will tell you that you can dial in this bike to improve corner performance which involves fabricating dog bones yourself because you can't buy the proper length in the market. Anyway, the reason this bike is still in my garage is it taught me how to tune bike's geometry and suspension and nothing beats this machine in the market in the same price point.
Im interested can you give me details on how dog bones work (i saw a dogbone lowering kit 30mm on lazada) and tune suspension. I changed my gen1 mt09(2016) rear suspension into yss topline and it feels alot better but i used it on the track today and i feel theres still a missing piece to my setup. Thanks in advance!
The Mt09 is amazing, and explained like this make it understandable in a vast sense of the motorcycle market. It has its great qualities and others that should of been on the options sheet. 👍
Great review. I haven't ridden a MT-09, but I recently put a few hundred miles on a XSR900. I thought the XSR was surprisingly comfortable after riding 400 miles in a day. Yes, it has more power than I need for street riding, but how much power you need is a matter of personal preference. Handling wasn't great, considering the light weight. Sound is another matter of preference. To me it sounds a lot like an old Detroit Diesel. Kind of cool but not my favorite.
Honest review! I rode this model was wholly unimpressed with the handling and throttle response. Nice to see a bigger youtuber giving an honest opinion! Perhaps Yamaha have tried harder with the upcoming model.
The dude is absolutely right about everything on the MT09. The suspension isn't great, it isn't a premium feeling bike, its not necessarily comfortable. But it is loads of fun. Cant beat how much fun you can have on this bike. Power is always there and always enjoyable to jump on the gas and let it rip. So it depends what you want a bike for. Do you want a bike for long cruises on the highway? Do you want to do mostly local riding? Do you wanna commute?
Fu.. man your 28, thought you were mid 30's, only got a couple years on myself and I am only just doing my DAS, COVID permitting. Keep up the good work man
I don't get it, does every powerfull bike need to perform great on track? No, I like to have a shit ton of power on for example the highway but I dont need any track performance stuff.
Rode my 2015 to work this morning. Had it since new. And well it's still my little 120HP honda grom. Basically! City "fun" nothing comes close. My other toy is a zx14r. A serious beast. But the 09 is just the pure sub 400lbs fun machine!!
I just sold my 2019 MT-09 to upgrade to the 2022 MT-10. I agree with your assessment. I was hyped during the first six months and then began noticing the lackluster suspension, brakes, and quirky throttle response. It also handles poorly at high speeds. The MT-10 overcomes many of these complaints, but it also has similar issues (to a much lesser degree) as the MT-09 compared to more expensive hyper-naked sport bikes. However, one must remember that the MT-09 targets younger, less experienced riders who are mainly interested in raw, unrefined performance. At the MT-09 price point, it is an excellent value for your dollar.
@@vHiqhlight No, they are very different bikes. The MT-09 is more like a young, untamed colt. The MT-10 is heavier and more planted at high speeds. It handles better in the twisties. Very predictable, and the suspension is much more compliant. The MT-09 was very twittery in the corners, and the brakes and the suspension left a lot to be desired. The motors are very different (4 vs. 3 cylinders), especially the sound, extra hp, and torque. There are some aspects of the MT-09 that I do miss my MT-09. It is a better urban commuter than the MT-10. It is much lighter and easier to flick around. It also got better fuel mileage--45 vs. 36 mpg.
Great video! What I, as a long time loyal subscriber and viewer of your channel would like to see for the intermediate bike giveaway series, for you to get the KTM Duke 890 as well as a KTM 890 Adventure R and compare their on-road manners and what kind of rider should get either one. I would definitely like to see you get more into the adventure and dual sport type of bikes. With it you already having a drz400, Yamaha getting rid of the wr250r, Kawasaki releasing their klx300, in Honda releasing their new bikes, there's a lot to do there. Just an idea. I'm really happy to hear about what you're doing with the intermediate bike giveaway series. keep up the awesome content! And thank you so much for being the one, the only, the man, myth, legend, PAPA YAM
I just purchased a 2020. what i noticed most in the video is that your just riding it and thats kinda all want to do on it. I think your review is geared towards folks that want to take it past that level of just touring and enter the performance side. I can agree that the short wheel base, torquey motor and sub par suspension will make this a challenge. I appreciate your channel tremendously and its just your opinion. I think is a fun bike and fun is all that matters.
As someone who rides an FJR1300 on the street, WHY NOT have the power and torque? I can still split lanes comfortably. I have optionality to get ahead of hazards. I can ride VERY comfortably at freeway speeds. Sure, it's nice to have a lighter, more flickable bike, but since I'm not off-roading it, the weight doesn't really matter to me.
I have a 21 street triple that I'm very happy with, love the ride, handling, just about everything, and have been looking for a 2nd bike, something different from the strip, something with character, that's simple, fun, easy to ride, and landed on the Ducati scrambler, probably the icon. Nice, easy going, fun, nimble ....... but then I read so many reviews about how crazy hot it is riding in warm/hot climate - I'm in Tucson, AZ-- so I started thinking about the mt-09, drove one few months ago at yamaha event, thought it was exactly what you describe in this video --- fun, hooligan, what a pisser, but I think I will get bored with that pretty quick. you have desert sled, same 803 engine as scrambler icon, what is your experience with the heat,,, thanks
This is an old video now, but I’ll comment anyway. I owned a first year FZ09. Of the 5 street bikes I owned (81 kz550 cafe, shadow750, R6, FZ09, star1300) it was my favorite and I miss it very much. I demo rode the MT07 after and it felt so light I had 0 confidence in the front end. I had ridden the GSXS750 before and the seat felt leaned forward while bars were upright so it was just an odd position to sit for me personally. And just today I demo rode a Z650 (I couldn’t get a slot on the Z900) and I really liked it. As I’m at the end of the day I am considering it as my next bike. I just don’t know if I can get past not having the amazing sound of the MT triple. I have ridden a multistrada before and besides all the electronics wasn’t any better for the style riding I do, it was the same with the tenere. So far the only bike I’ve ridden that made me feel as good as my FZ09 may be the only thing that stops me from buying another FZ was the Z650. I really want to try the Z900, but the 650 was great. The cross plane triple sound though 🤤
Had 5 different bikes and I really like my xsr for my only bike. It's fun, I can go long distance and I can commute. If I had money for a couple bikes I agree I wouldn't get it, but for a do it all bike, it's perfect for me.
I'm kindve biased because I bought my first Gen Fz 09 with performance Penske suspension front and back which happened to be tuned for my weight, akrapovic exhaust and a Bauce Ecu flash. I got a great price for it and its an absolute blast to ride. Maintain its line on curves. Have yet to track it but does well on mountain twisties here in NY/NJ. Absolute wheelie machine and hooligan of a bike.
As an XSR900 owner, I agree with much of what you said. Echoing what others have said, I think that motorcycle ownership trajectory is an important thing to emphasize as you are now on the other side of the "power and performance climax," if you will. I would liken it to when you get really good at a given video game and then using the most overpowered character, weapons, etc. gets boring, but I think you have to ride that overpowered motorcycle or do a few track days on an R1 to get there.
Totally agree with your review. I was about to get one but eventually i decided to spend more and feel more at ease with a Street Triple RS, even though my riding is 80 % for in town commuting.
I think I understand your criticisms about this mt 09 model, and I know that you like the mt 07 perhaps better, and it really is a very special naked one, and I also have the 07 and it is actually quite fun, but as time goes by if you want more ,.. but more of the same, that is, the same concept of twisted engine, good availability , and the new 09 3-ger-2021 ) is very different from this 09 2018-2020 , which I still consider a One of the best for its price and power ,.. but the new 09 2021 ,.. looks like it has never been ,.. lots of electronics ,.. more premium ,.. stronger , more torque , more smoothness , better geometry ,.. better sound ,.. anyway,. a little better in everything, except maybe the headlight,..otherwise,..for 10.000 euros it is in my opinion the best machine, in terms of fun sessions,...
As a short guy that can't safely stand up an R6, I feel like the MT-09 is the perfect bike. Similar power but in a package I can actually manage. A bike I can somewhat do anything with.
One thing I forgot to mention though, the GPR stabilizer makes that steering so much more palatable. Definitely recommend it as the first mod you do on the bike for the safety and the general feel after you do. Just don't strip your screws...thats some expensive aluminum...
Is the cornering really that unstable?? I’m on an HD sportster rn, and I can’t imagine it being anymore unstable at “high” speeds than this little sporty…do people just have really high expectations??
@@gilbertn60133 I think it's more of a torque issue. It took a while to get used to feathering the throttle. And with the higher position of the steering, it feels more at risk of high siding if you can't position yourself correctly. Hitting gravel in a corner makes the bike want to stand up, so the stabilizer really helps mellow out the little wobbles.
Haven't ridden an mt09. Used to own an mt03 and found it to be lacking. Got a super4. That was good but still only a 400cc bike. Now I'm riding a Triumph street triple and yes, this is the one. The pull exhilarating and the cornering is just point and shoot. Besides, the whistle of the triple is just intoxicating. Downside? Possibly reliability. Still, it'll be the Triumph's triples from now on.... the next bike and the next bike and the next.
To get the MT-09 to compete with the other, newer bikes like the 890 you would need to spend nearly 2000 on suspension, 300 on a ecu flash, 500 on a master cylinder(s) lines and pads, and other odds and ends to get it to the level of refinement you get from the new Ducati Monster, the KTM, Street Triple. But, as it sits and at it's price, I still think it's extremely competitive for the amount of power you get and rock solid reliability. If you spent the same money to upgrade the MT-09 to compete with the other boutique brands, you might as well buy an MT-10 or CB1000R which already have nice suspension, cruise, and the soundtrack no one could ever hate on. Not to mention the Japanese reliability.
The best thing about the MT09 is the engine. The SP is the one to get if you want good suspension but even then a Duke 890 would be a more capable machine for a similar price.
The 890r is one of the best middle-weight nakeds I've ever ridden. It's almost a perfect bike for someone who loves this category. It takes corners like it's being guided on rails while still being stupid hooligan machine anytime you want it. I loved it even more than the new superduke and almost sold my tuono 1100rr.
Yams. You check out the service intervals on a KTM 350excf yet? Cool bike. Super fun. But it’s got a dirt bike service schedule. Oil changes and valve checks are frequent. They’re not horribly difficult to do. But it’s work.
I know that “growing up” feel 100%. Wanted a Z900 or something similar but when i sat on one and thought about how i was going to be using it (daily commuting and weekend trips) it made no sense. I call my new bike the “big boy bike”
I think the temptation to do "stupid" comes with every motorcycle after the begin-ster. I love my MT-09 because of the raw and consistent power - when I want it - it's there - doesn't matter the gear or the RPM... You hit the throttle and power is delivered as expected. Probably one of the most fun and agile bikes... It won't corner like a track bike - it's not meant for that - it's for the dad's that have loved riding their whole lives and realistically get out the bike the most when the suns out and you can take the Long-Way to work, and the mountain pass home. The seat needs to be swapped and some of the aesthetics... but this bike is for the blokes that want to have a blast every time they hop on and have rode long enough to not do "stupid" when Stupid calls. If you have a garage with 5 spots for bikes, then this isn't going to be in it... but the bike that you hit up work then go for a ride after - this bike is perfect.
Hi, thank you so much for this video. I thought I was the only one who thinks that something around 70 horses is enough for the street. Today, power + 100 hp is being pushed. What's weaker is for a year and then boring, and then buy a better performance,... 🙂👍
Thanks to Rokform for supporting today's ROAST of the MT09! glnk.io/3rj1/yammie-noob Code “YN25” is 25% off!
some of the same problems were with the mt-07 its might be because of the same spacer in the fork stem being too long
Should I trust that bike on my channel
Papa Yam, what about the MT-09 SP?! Love the vids, keep it up💪
The world journalists agree.
Dont like the MT-09 but love the MT-10? I dont get it
You sound like a man who'd appreciate the smoothness, the dependability, the predictability in the corners, and the general adultness, of a car.

Same here buddy. My only mod was changing the stock handlebars to LSL X00. The stock ones just didn't feel right to me. Now it's as close to perfect as it could ever be for my type of riding.
I can’t buy the SP in the 🇺🇸

@@susdad heck yeah man, I've got my eye on one. Might just have to make it happen.
I agree with a lot of what you said, but most people aren't going to be on a track. Most of us are only going to be on the street for 99% of our ride.
@@yammienoob get a MV Augusta...
Rsv4- bmw s1000r - gxsr owners look at me as an alien and probably think it's not worth it blablabla
I've spent around 3 weeks to tune it and approx 2000$.
I’m 70 and just bought an MT 09, it keeps me alert😉
He only said that the Mt09 "is to much for him and his ride style" That´s it, nothing more.
He voiced his opinion, I voiced my opinion, nothing more.
Mt09 fits no category. It does nothing well except a ton of unusable power

Great video, you hit the nail right on the head with this one
kinda have the same relationship witrh mine! made me realise that i'd rather Ride fast a slow bike than ride slow a fast bike..
get good at self control and managing risks or don't ride imo.
Sitting up I rarely speed just because of the wind, but when I tuck I find myself doing illegal speeds very quickly without even realizing
I tracked my MT-09 SP yesterday, and it was awesome with the suspension dialled in. Lots of 3rd and 4th gear power wheelies. It absolutely shined on a technical track. LOVE IT!!
Always appreciate a good conversation with the wind

Upgrading from XJ6 to 2017 MT09, never regret it. This bike is so good looking, light and fun! I don’t like high speed but those accelerations...OMG
Upgrading from the 03 to the 09, 2nd year of driving a bike. I just want to feel the 09's torque and power to be happy.
Man up. Ive owned mine for 7 years. Got rid of all my other bikes. BTW, Im 76.
I've had the opportunity to ride my brother's a few times. He had it remapped and put a better shock on the back...in the end, it is a great bike with more than enough power for the street...plenty of stomp...good for hooning it up for sure.
Can't wait til the 2021 MT09SP!!
Happy Saturday folks!
"I like my bikes to be a little bit more turn-key"....says the man who built an adventure Grom!
You have to admit that was good for a laugh...
And who tore apart a Harley to build the engine up from the bottom end...
I'll take it if you don't want it :P
bro fr wtf 😂
Fellow xsr900 bro! Best purchase i ever made. Its fun, it commutes, it cruises, it drags and pulls twisties well. Hella fun bike.
get a windshield. thats all I needed to do for highways, track can be tricky but still insane, fast and wild. this bike is exactly how I like my ladies xD
Meet a dude that has owned 43 Motorcycles. He said the Fz09 was in his top 5. Different strokes for different folks in the end. I like building it to my specifications. I feel the power is worth the attention to the suspension and add where Yamaha is not.
Hold on , he doesn't like the fact it doesn't carve corners like a SS bike but don't want an SS bike for the street . Make it make sense 🤷🏾♂️
"I've grown beyond that type of riding."
Wants to buy and EXC and curb hop 🙄
One phrase to sum up this bike
Jack of all trades, master of none
Jack of all trades
🇯🇵MASTER OF TORQUE🇯🇵
Definitely - it's a solid all around sportbike. It just doesn't do any one thing super well
But better be versatile, than a fool in all but one
Master wheelie machine....
Traction control off ...
B mode to tame fueling....
Ready for balance point all day if you're a skilled rider ....its all about proper throttle modulation....
Master of engine character. It's not quantifiable, but you know it when you ride it.
Bro, I love this bike, it takes me from work and back home with a big smile on my face, and it does the twistys just fine if I ride within comfort level
Yammie's next bike is gonna be an old honda trail 50.
Yeah I have a Ducati scrambler and it’s about all I need around town. It’s fun, playful, comfortable and can easily do highway speeds if need be.
Do you think the changes to the 2021 MT09 make it a better overall bike? The new Triumph Trident looks like it's the perfect street bike, good price, good suspension, not insane power.
Trident power seems a bit weak. And we don't know how good the suspension is yet. We know they saved money on the brakes (2 pot calipers)
Love my xsr900. I'd love to try a track, but i never mistook it as a track specialist.
Passed my msf course today! Ready for that turbo busa now. 😁
I know!
What bike would you recommend that would not get boring? General question… could you give me a few options to research?
@@natebailey3454 Z900 or MT09
Same story for me, zx14r was insane and eventually your walking ,that sort of power ruins you for every other bike ,love the torque and weight of the mt09 2023.
You and I see motorcycles in a very different way. I used to be into cruisers and am starting to change my mind. I'm now leaning towards adventure bikes. I'm really liking the new Triumph Tiger 850 sport. It would have to be loaded with all options for my tastes. I commute and go sight seeing and go shopping on my bike. I NEVER need a race bike.
Appreciate the honest review
You guys get on a R1 and tell me this is not a good street bike ,than you ride a MT 09 and tell me it's not a good track bike, come on man!!
Man y'all are so critical. It's good content calm down

I love that one of the reasons is "too much torque and horsepower".
kkkkkkkkkkk ,... kkkkkkkkk,..por isso se chama mt 09,.. master of torque ,...kkkkk
Kind of cool but not my favorite.
yeah dude i feel the same way. i've had all forms of bikes over the years and I feel like 80 hp ish is a good number for a general everyday bike.
Honest review! I rode this model was wholly unimpressed with the handling and throttle response. Nice to see a bigger youtuber giving an honest opinion! Perhaps Yamaha have tried harder with the upcoming model.
The SP will take care of that suspension issue you mentioned.
2021 SP will cover all the other shortcomings. It's basically 90% new bike from the ground up.
The MT 09 is an amazing bike. I've had a lot of great bikes and this one is my favorite
Great viewpoint man 👍
Fu.. man your 28, thought you were mid 30's, only got a couple years on myself and I am only just doing my DAS, COVID permitting. Keep up the good work man
He just seems like he's a middle age grump lol
Isnt the mt-10 pretty much the same bike besides the engine?
Just ordered some merch! Keep up the good stuff
Had 5 different bikes and I really like my xsr for my only bike. It's fun, I can go long distance and I can commute. If I had money for a couple bikes I agree I wouldn't get it, but for a do it all bike, it's perfect for me.
Let's be real, the swing arm captured frame is its shortcoming. Its also what makes it such a fun street bike.
I have one and I love it... I see it as an American Muscle Car of motorcycles - It will go fast in a straight line, but a turn could be a problem.
Hey there. I watch u from Romania and I love your videos. Keep it up, u are great ;)
“I don’t see myself needing this much power in a street bike”
See Turbo Busa lol
I own a Gen2 and agree. It's a bit sketchy on the canyons. But the CP3 is intoxicating. Yamaha need to make the R09
condems it for the track but does a video on the highway haha
Totally agree with your review. I was about to get one but eventually i decided to spend more and feel more at ease with a Street Triple RS, even though my riding is 80 % for in town commuting.
In a world of street triple, I wudnt own an mt09
What about the SP model for 2021
@@Diff727 that would be a solid contender imo. especially for the price. if you can tolerate the looks
"Quality of performance" is your beef? But you are riding the OLD ONE so its not even fair
Great bike! Thank you!
love the vids man
The best thing about the MT09 is the engine. The SP is the one to get if you want good suspension but even then a Duke 890 would be a more capable machine for a similar price.
Head to head comparison with 890 duke r. Do the duke r, we want to see the scalpel!!!!!!!!!!
110hp 380lb wet weight, I'd love to see yammies reaction. It kind of out-hooligans the mt09, I'd imagine
Yes pls
Yeah what he said
The 890 r is a cut above the current 09
The 890r is one of the best middle-weight nakeds I've ever ridden. It's almost a perfect bike for someone who loves this category.
It takes corners like it's being guided on rails while still being stupid hooligan machine anytime you want it.
I loved it even more than the new superduke and almost sold my tuono 1100rr.
Yams. You check out the service intervals on a KTM 350excf yet?
Cool bike. Super fun. But it’s got a dirt bike service schedule. Oil changes and valve checks are frequent.
They’re not horribly difficult to do. But it’s work.
Try the KTM 690 enduro puts a smile on your face every time I ride it round the streets..
Great video!
I know that “growing up” feel 100%. Wanted a Z900 or something similar but when i sat on one and thought about how i was going to be using it (daily commuting and weekend trips) it made no sense. I call my new bike the “big boy bike”
Lol I guess I am still growing up almost 40 and still ride like I'm 28 lolol...
