In fact the direct descendants of the saka people still exist in Xinjiang today! Some historical inaccuracies. Most of Dzungaria in the northern Xinjiang was sparsely populated at the start of the 20th century. Most of the Han migration was into that region, and not in Southern Xinjiang where most of the Uyghur population is. A Qing consensus in 1908 showed the Uyghur population in Urumqi only made up 25% of the total population. Han and Hui muslims made up the majority of the population. So I don't buy this narrative that the PRC encouraged Han migration to "dilute" the Uyghur population when most of the migration occurred in places where it was already Han/Hui majority, or in sparsely populated areas in Northern Xinjiang.

    • @TheDragonHistorian
      @TheDragonHistorian  3 года назад +2

      Yes, that was a pretty significant gap in research on my part. There was already a large Han Chinese presence in Xinjiang at the end of the Qing dynasty. However, there was a significant drop in the Han population after the Xinhai Revolution, so the part that I discussed was the Han repopulation of Xinjiang following the establishment of the PRC.

    the uyghurs of today were formed in the Kara Khanid empire of the 10th century,which was founded by ancient uyghur refugees fleeing their Mongolia based homeland after 840AD,yhagmas ,karluks and other west Turkic tribes etc. After they invaded and occupied the Tarim basin indo European tocharian and saka kingdoms, since they were the victors they get to kill the tocahrian saka men and rape their women ,so modern day uyghurs in Tarim basin have some European appearance.

When northern Xinjiang did not have enough population to fight the Soviet invasion, China began large-scale immigration.
