The History of the Uyghurs: Part 1 (1/3)

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- The Uyghurs are a Turkic, mostly Muslim people living in a province of northwestern China called Xinjiang. However, they started out as Buddhist nomads in the steppes of Mongolia. In this video, we will discuss how the Uyghurs migrated and changed their religion over the course of several centuries.

Part 2 has already been recorded, and I will aim to upload it this Wednesday. However, I have midterm exams this week as well, so it might get delayed up to Friday. It will be here by the end of the week, though.
Cannot wait for part 2! Anw, good luck with your exam.
Really disappointed about this video without mentioning the Kara khanid empire which is the actual regime where modern day uyghurs in Tarim basin(90% of uyghur population) are from and they self identify with it! Uyghurs outside Tarim basin in turpan and hami (10% of uyghur population)are from the qocho uyghur kingdom but have culturally and religion assimilated into those of the Tarim basin a few centuries ago. Today Uyghurs as far as I know don’t care about the qocho uyghur kingdom but the Kara khanid!! This video about the formation of modern day uyghurs is just fundamentally wrong!
@@太守苏定交趾 Interesting, I'll have to look into that and incorporate it into Part 2 if I can. Thanks for the heads up.
The Dragon Historian if you look in Wikipedia for qocho uyghur kingdom you will find that there is no uyghur language article. Meanwhile for Kara khanid there is a very detailed uyghur language article for it. I think this is enough to show the attitude of modern day uyghurs. Hope you can be more accurate next time.
Orlando Sages doesn’t matter, modern day uyghurs self identify with Kara khanid and don’t care about tocharian mongols etc. Just look on Wikipedia about Kara khanid and there is a very detailed Uighur language article meanwhile for the tocharian kingdom of qiu ci 龟兹 there is not uyghur article but ironically a detailed Chinese one😂. I believe this is enough to show the Uighur attitude about their ancestor.

@S Qq Easy vanilla cake recipe:
Ingredients
175g (6oz) margarine or softened butter
175g (6oz) caster sugar
3 large eggs
175g (6oz) self-raising flour, sifted
1tsp baking powder
1tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt
Method
Heat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4). Lightly grease an 18cm (7in) round cake tin with a little extra butter or margarine and cut a piece of greaseproof paper or non-stick baking parchment to fit the base of the tin.
Put all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon or a hand-held mixer for 1 minute, or until just combined. It's important not to beat the batter too much - just long enough to make it smooth.
Pour or spoon the mixture into the tin, smooth the top and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for about 45-50 minutes. The cake is cooked when it looks well risen and golden; the top should spring back when lightly touched with a fingertip. Another test is to insert a skewer into the centre of the cake - it should come out clean.
Let the cake sit in the tin for 5 minutes, then gently run a knife around the edge and turn the cake out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve dusted with icing sugar.
Tips
If the idea of being able to bake sounds tempting but a little scary, this is the perfect easy cake for you. It's infinitely variable and incredibly easy to make. Simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and beat until combined. You can mix with a wooden spoon, a hand-held electric mixer or by using the pulse action of a food processor.
Using margarine rather than butter works really well for this cake and saves you the bother and time of having to soften the butter before you start. Don't be tempted to open the oven before 40 minutes - you'll regret it. Put the cake in an airtight container and it can be stored for up to 2 days.

You said, "Old Uyghur and Modern Uyghur are practically two unrelated languages". I think this statement is inaccurate and shallow. Firstly, even though they are from two different branches of the Turkic language family, they both still belong to the same Turkic language family. Secondly, I have read many books about the Qocho Uyghur. It is very similar to the Chagatai Turkic and the Modern Uyghur, most of the Uyghur linguistics believe that Chagatai and Qocho Uyghur are the parent languages to the modern Uyghur.
You could say that Uyghur and Chinese are practically two unrelated languages but not Old Uyghur and the modern Uyghur.
Other than that, nice work!
Chagatai itself is a descendent of Middle Turkic of southern Uyghur lands which in turn is a descendent of Kashgarian Hakani/Bughrahani which is directly linked to Orkhon Turkic - the language of stone monuments. Qocho Uyghur and Hakani were mutually intelligible dialects of same language - child dialects of old Turkic spoken in Mongolia.

That's the view of most linguists. Western Yugur is hypothesized to be the closest to the original Uyghur dialect when they were in Turkic Homeland (i.e. Southern Siberia and Mongolian steppe). The current dialect spoken in Tarim Basin is influenced by the invasion from Muslim Turks in Central Asia.

so in terms of language, modern uyghurs aren't directly related to ancient uyghurs.
Currently majority of linguists consider Old Turkic a dead language without direct language descendants. Mongolia Orkhon Turk/Orkhon Uyghur + Xinjiang Kocho medieval Uyghur + Xinjiang Hakani/Bughrahani Karakhanid = dialects of Old Turkic. There is no such thing as a Karluk language, even less so a Kipchak language. These groups were coined by modern linguists for simplicity purposes. Modern Turkic languages ought to be classified by their geography north-eastern, south-western, southeastern, etc. - creates less confusion separating historical literary tongues of the old from the ones spoken today. Nevertheless, modern Uyghur shares many similarities with Kocho Uyghur and Karakhanid Hakani that other modern Turkic language lack such as regressive assimilation, certain suffixes, vocabulary etc. And it is the closest modern Turkic language to Old Turkic according a number of scholars, Western ones primarily Gabain, Menges, etc. Old Turkic being a Siberian language was pushed by Soviet scholars who spoke neither medieval Turkic tongues nor modern Turkic tongues mostly counting letters, unlike their Western counterparts who spoke the languages and could read and compare the various scripts that Old Turkic dialects were written in.
