    I LOVE that you are including a shower/toilet. I don't get why so many people are fine with travel vans without them. Sure, you can use gyms and such for toilet facilities/showers...but I would rather not have to.

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад +38

      Yeah most don't have them, for me it was a necessity because it will be my long term home 😀🤙🏼

      Travel With Jaz - actually, a LOT of people living in their vans in America who post on RUclips do not have toilets/showers. They just live in vans and shower at 24 hour gyms. Enjoy man.

      I agree that a shower/toilet is a must, but note that this project involves a long wheelbase van so has extra space. Many opt for the shorter wheelbase version so they can park in a standard bay, lighter weight, lower fuel consumption and easier to navigate tighter roads. So pros and cons to both. To each their own. Yes a shower/toilet can fit in a shorter wheelbase van but it's not as straightforward.

      Patriot Jefferson Those gym bathrooms are VERY clean. It's not a public restroom. That said, tons of people that tour national parks don't shower for over a week. So that's the norm. I myself would at least want a toilet but it's a huge sacrifice in terms of space. I would probably have an outdoor shower. I would care the most if I were with touring with a GF/wife. I wouldn't want sexy time with someone that hasn't showered for a week and I don't blame them for not wanting to touch me.

      "I LOVE that you are including a shower/toilet. I don't get why so many people are fine with travel vans without them"
      No kidding...you can lay your head ANYWHERE, even a makeshift rooftop tent or sleeping in the cab is doable (hell, people sleep in tiny-ass cars all the time). Cooking is no problem either, a small camp stove fed by a 20lb propane bottle can last MONTHS. On the more glamorous side, a cheap engine-coupled inverter or off-grid solar array would allow you to run a microwave or toaster oven no problem...
      But IMO having your own toilet, sink and shower... PRICELESS.

    I like that you're not using all of the expensive equipment and shops other youtubers are using and you're using a small hand tool to cut the pieces. It looks so do-able.

      Just a thought for other DIY builders, you can also consider to fit the toilet door outside the other way around, so it would be hinged on the right side instead. Good point is in case the door pops open for whatever reason and while driving you properly don't rip the door off then.

    Very informative video!! Thank you!! It really helps when you are not a very handy person & you can find a video such as yours that shows how you did it, tools, supplies, etc... Can't wait to one day do this! My first requirement is that I can stand in the van, not ok with having to hunch over and second priority is a shower/toilet. Too many videos I have seen that are without these or are made to take showers outside the van, no thanks! Awesome job, can't wait to watch the rest!

    The bathroom turned out as a success! Van Life would definitely not be the same without it! It takes living day to day in the van to the next level and makes it much more convenient. I strongly recommend building a bathroom if you have the chance.
    The wet area panel i used is called (High Pressure Melamine) - www.bunnings.com.au/wall-art-2400-x-1200-x-3mm-snow-white-wet-area-wall-shower-panel_p6660403

    I converted an ldv maxus in 2009 using the same format as you, the
    toilet and shower behind the drivers seat, it seamed a good thing to do until i came to fit the cassette toilet, as i wanted to be able to remove the cassette from outside i had to cut the cassette door and the water fill. the problem comes with the shape of the sides, if i ever do another i would put it the other side, so that i could overlap the side door and make access to the cassette easily.

    Excellent build. The thought of needing a place to take a crap (in private) is innovative thinking. Its like saying to your travel mate 'Do you love me. If you do, you will watch me take a crap.' Also, I don't see the novelty of a conversion including a kitchen that takes up over half the space and no place to crap and take a shower. Again, excellent build.

    FEEDBACK - Many thanks Jaz for putting in the time to producing this video - the content will be a real help to me, and many others I assume. Please could I ask you to back the music level off by approx 50% on your next video(s), it is quite overpowering in between you speaking, especially watching this late at night. Also, the extremely repetitive music in the first six minutes was so hard to endure I had to mute the sound. I appreciate mine is just a subjective view, and others may love the music. But I wanted to let you know at least one person was struggling with it, when what I most appreciate is your words and video, any nondescript quiet music in the background would have done. Hope I haven't caused any offense - like I say, I really appreciate your efforts here.

      Thanks so much for the feedback all feedback is welcomed, and I have had many people say the same thing especially for this video, I learnt and later agreed that yes it was to overpowering etc. So yeah thank you a lot for you feedback :)

    Awesome job Jaz.
    Will be beginning my own build soon in a high roof MWB Ford Transit.
    I will be going for the porta potty sitting in the shower cubicle & removed when showering for the room and less areas for water to collect.
    Am not sure if am up to plumbing myself.
    Was also hoping to find a solution where didn't need gas or 240v for hot water as want to be off grid and more stealth.
    I'm 47yr female in Western Australia.... I'm prepared to give it all ago. 🤣

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  6 лет назад

      Thanks Cherie! Love your enthusiasm, you got it girl :) Yeah well the other hot water options I guess are just 240V or 12V hotwater, but instantaneous gas is the most efficient and quickest by far! I'd love to see your solutions, good luck wish you the best

    Jaz you are amazing. I'm so happy to see an Aussie conversion in great detail. I'm in my 50's and my dream is starting now. My chicks have all left the nest and I'm on my own so I hope to travel and live in my van for a few years. I've bought a Ford Transit Jumbo Hi roof which I'm converting. Have bought most things off Ebay and my garage is filling up quickly. Super impressed with your shower fit out. I've bought a Dometic Swivel toilet and was wondering what you lifted your toilet with to make smooth transition through access. I have same shower tray. Looking forward to future videos. (PS my son is an apprentice carpenter and will be doing the fit out for me so he can practice his skills LOL)

      That's awesome Tracy, glad to hear you'll be van lifing soon too! For the packer for underneath the toilet, I haven't sourced it yet but I will definitely show it in a video when I do. Its going to be some sort of plastic material I would imagine. Good to hear your son is on the build too, it's a lot of work! he'll get heaps of experience.
      All the best!

    Those cassette toilet things are interesting, seems like something I'd want in a conversion van because it can be removed and dumped into a septic system or such without hauling the van over there. Sadly (or fortunately, depending on who you ask) in the USA we end up with black water tanks instead, which are large and hard to service, and a hell to dump / clean if you break down or can't move your van or trailer for a period of time.

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад

      Thank you! Yeah they are very simple to use and portable to where you want to dump the storage. I like the simplicity of them too

      Why not cut a lip in the shower tray so you don't have to raise the toilet, I'm sure the shower tray won't overflow unless you're parked on a bad slope.

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад +2

      Hey mate glad you're interested thanks! The van was $28500 drive away, and the project budget has definitely blown out but maybe around $20000. YIKES!

    • @alexwhyte292
      @alexwhyte292 7 лет назад +1

      Sorry if this is too personal but can I ask where most of that will be going? Is it the big things like solar panels etc or did you have to buy tools? I'm thinking of doing a build myself and hearing $20,000 scares me!

    • @eric9964
      @eric9964 7 лет назад

      Yeah, $20,000 sounds like way too much, usually an expensive build w/o van cost is around $5-8k, wondering where the other money went

    • @iannanson3951
      @iannanson3951 7 лет назад +3

      Re the cost, he's an Aussie so remember the exchange rate is 25% plus below the us dollar. I suspect stuff costs more here too, and he see to be doing a fairly high end job. Easy to lose track of dollars when you get stuck in too😁

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад +12

      Hey there! The most expensive thing will be the Lithium Ion batteries + all the battery management system going with it. Most vans dont do lithium ion, but it is something I really want because it is much better quality and will be the best for being completely off the grid. I still haven't finished the van build yet, but things add up quickly. Bare in mind that I'm planning for this to be my full time house for many years to come. $20,000 compared to a $500,000 house is no comparison.

    Why o why do people "smooth" sealent with their finger this just leaves a mess, a simple homemade tool gives a superior finish and is a lot cleaner way of sealing a join

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад

      Just the simplicity and ease of it I think, and can do great finishes in most applications. What is the tool though I've never seen a dedicated tool for finishing a seal

    • @justask437
      @justask437 7 лет назад +1

      Travel With Jaz I don't mean to be rude but all the seals that I saw of yours did look very messy and yes there are dedicated tools for the job or what I use is a small piece of 4 mm mdf roughly 70 mm x 35 mm with a small 45 degree cut in one corner and use that corner to smooth your sealant

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад

      There is also a set of silicone triangles and squares with angled and tapered edges. They flex in tighter than the finger, but again, easy to lose track of and the finger and spit are always 'handy".

    Hello, amazing work. Just two potentiel issues I can think of.
    Debris can get into the system through the breather.
    There is no draining valve to empty water container

    • @JaznLori
      @JaznLori  7 лет назад

      Thanks Jakub! That's a good point i will have to put on some mesh to filter the end of the breather,
      and also I can disconnect a push in connector at the bottom of the tank that connects to the filter with ease and drain this way.
      Thanks for the support and tips mate!

  • @mikedunning265

    This is a great series of build instructions. You have good attention to details which so many other builds are missing, the examples in this video would the sealing off of the shower area, using cables and conduit to make later install steps easier (sparky background i guess! ) The only item would have recommended was to try and make sure the ply, and other wood components do not rub against metal, especially in hard to get to areas. This has happened to me and the squeaking on some roads dove us crazy. I ended up forcing some sealer around walls etc to stop it, but the one behind the shower was a right pain.
