Love your videos I hope you watch mine haha
Hi. Greg.
29th September 2020: I am just starting my Van Conversion: Mercedes Sprinter LWB High Roof: I or I should say we (Wife & I) the team have been watching your videos along with many, many other videos on doing the conversions. I must start by saying that your videos surpass ALL others. Well Done.
WATER SYSTEM: It is my intention to follow your advice and install my main water tank inside the van, fortunately my background is Fabrication / Welder so making a bespoke stainless steel tank that fits over the wheel arch and acts as a bed support too. Any other thoughts on the water system you have thought about since doing your van and you would do differently please let me know, much appreciated.
When planning your vans in what order or sequence would you do them, I personally are starting from the roof downwards, or is this the wrong approach.
PS. I am thinking of selling these bespoke tanks: 2mm thk & the water volume is Approx: 112 Litres, the beauty of building my own tank I can install on the inside of the tank Calming Baffles that will stop the water from sloshing about when driving.
Again thanks for showing us ALL the ways to convert these vans.
Regards
Steve B
Can you recommend any water tanks for under the van?
@@katieedwards9312 I have a water tank video and got mine from CAK Tanks 😁
Thanks for the water services diagram that is truly helpful 🙂
By far, the ABSOLUTELY BEST rv plumbing explanation on youtube.. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!!! Huge Thumbs Up !!!!!
Wow, thanks! Glad it was useful to you.
Sir you are so smart . Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Honestly THANK YOU so much, your videos are literally the only ones I can understand on the internet haha - thanks❤️
Really glad you like them and hope they help you with your plans. :D
Agreed. Thank you Greg!
Same with me and I watch a whole lot of them this one here is the best thanks !!!🙏
Come back to Greg’s videos year on year, I’m a very visual learner; how you learnbwhatever way Greg’s diagrams are a winner as this isn’t easy stuff to understand !
Yep me too! Just about to start on my own van! Literally no clue 😖
The man's a genius in fairness. Very clear and very understandable.
Thanks Greg - I'm recommending you for a M.B.E.
Motorcaravan Builder Extrordinaire.
Good luck on your travels.
fraser hardmetal 😂🥇that made me smile 😃 thank you 🙏🏼
@@GregVirgoe you are the best ( that is not ok , you need 10 people to build a good van )
Can we help recommend too even we are from the US?
Mate you are brilliant I’ve done nothing but watch your videos to gather info for my up and coming build
Can’t thank you enough
That’s great 😃 then they have done exactly what I wanted them to do. Glad that it has helped you 👍🏼😃
I haven't got a van yet, but I still found your explanation of the hot and cold water system very informative and interesting. A big thumbs up...
Paul Barnett hope it will help when you come to do your conversion. 👍🏼😀
Greg Virgoe is the man!
Amazing, really excellent work. I've seen so many videos, but never anyone tick all the boxes like you do. Perfect visualization, everything explained slowly with calm voice (might sounds funny, but important for people like me), and all the links below the video, saving so much time.
Thank you very much for all your hard work.
Greg, I love your videos. Thank you so much. I'm in Victroria Australia and just started a complete gutting of an old 1974 Franklin caravan. You have helped so much. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for watching Dave and good luck with your project 👍🏼
So impressed with this video. I have watched dozens of camper van tutorials but this hits the nail on the head. Perfect level of information delivered in a clear style. I have subscribed and will definitely be watching the rest of the videos in the series. Thanks
Thank you for subscribing. Only 30% of my viewers subscribe yet it’s the easiest way of saying thanks 😊👍🏼
gosh youre so straight forward, i needed this diagram so badly, watching skoolie builds is one thing but i just needed a basically visual run down where i could see everything and make sense of the jumbled parts list ive come up with from watching several builds. THANK YOU! i will be printing this diagram out as a personal guide.
Really glad it has helped you. I have some other technical videos that you may find useful too 🤩
I totally relate! Couldn't have said it better myself
Bloody brilliant video mate! Thanks for contributing this valuable material to the van community! Your service is invaluable to many.
Best and most clear, complete, detailed and easy to follow video on this topic I have seen. I've watched 100's in learning and for deciding what I should install in my off grid cabin. Thank you!
I kept it to the essentials and no more frills. It just works really well 👍🏼😊
Always good, always interesting and helpful Greg. These water and electric guides ‘for dummies’ (like me) are invaluable. Many thanks, as always.😇🤪😇
FunkyFlunky it’s good to know that they are useful. Thank you for great comment.
I have been watching your video for several months and your episodes were the best for conversion beginner like me. I will purchase Sprinter 415 in next week to make campervan. Thank you for your precious guide.
You, sir, are my first source of advice on youtube (at least, regarding campervan stuff! :-) ) Best tutorials on the internet. Thank you so much. Keep well, mate, and know that you've helped countless people in their hours of need. :-)
Thank you for these videos. You've made it so easy to understand, even an absolute novice (me) can understand it. The thought of doing my own build has become much less stressful.
That’s great 😃 it does help to break it down into component parts 👍🏼
I've had two whale pumps. I used them to pump from a 25 L container into my tank as the filler was about 5' off the ground. They seem, or at least the ones I had, to have a relatively short life span. I hope yours last longer.
You can also use the tank drain system to hook up to a pressure washer to _gently_ hose down your van.
The other thing was that I needed a sacrificial anode in my gas hot water boiler which needed replacing every few years. It was checked once a year.
jlavelle.uk our whale pump get very intermittent use. Had the same one for two years now. What make was your water boiler?
@@GregVirgoe it was an American make. Not sure which.
Thank you so much!! This had been the easiest explanation to follow.
Wow, Greg! I have just come back to your channel after selling my camper van and beginning another project! Thank you so much for this series on everything I need to know! You are an excellent teacher, and I am taking notes on all of your videos.
Thank you for the videos and schematic’s it will help me build out my camper van! Cheers!!
I’m glad that has helped you 👍🏼😃
Thank-you so much gregg I'm thinking about doing a conversion but looking at all the plumbing and electrics side it had put me off until I just see your video. Really can't thank you enough 👍👍👍👍
Brilliantly explained !!!!
Greg, I use 3 X 100 liter bladder tanks in my boat.
They are light, easy to swap in case they get damaged (which they don’t), no need for vents as they shrink as water is pulled, easy to disconnect remove and rinse out in case they accumulate dirt, no need for brackets to secure them in place, make up extra space when they’re empty, can check at a glance how full or empty they are, cheap to buy, I’m super happy after 7 years in a salty environment nothing has gone wrong yet. I’m sure you know, just wanted to practice my memory!
Yannis Tsakiris I have not seen them cross over into the motorhome world yet but sound like a great idea for internal tanks 👍🏼😀
Hi Yannis, would this system still require an expansion vessel? I wouldn’t want to explode a bladder I guess...
Hey Thanks, Greg this is awesome I've just built myself an off-grid cabin which will help me to set up my 12vwater supply system
Really appreciate the diagram and parts list videos are simple clear and very easy to understand thanks again buddy
That’s great 😃 lots of this information you can apply to your cabin. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Dude yes! Thank you for explaining so well! Often so many videos on this stuff just say "you get the water by using this" or "watch me install, now I have hot water". Your explanation of how it functioned and the visual aids helped so much!
Greg, what a great explanation, you make it sound simple enough for me to do and I appreciate your neat diagram, thank you very much.
Thank you Greg, I am very grateful of your wonderful help.
That's amazing! Could you tell me what is your external shower fitting? I believe it's not part of your part list. If I missed, sorry for asking :) Thank you so much!
I would also like to know where you found the external shower unit. It is more compact than anything I have found.
Another brilliant and fully understandable video of yours. I really don't know why they 've put the 2 thumbs down. Keep sharing your knowledge mate. Cheers
Ioannis Athanasiadis there are a handful of people that do that to every video without even watching them. Maybe jealousy perhaps. Doesn’t bother me I still get a view count for it 😁👍🏼
This was the most helpful video I have ever watched on Yourtube. Thank you Greg and fam. I will download the schematics and reserve for my build. I am struggling to find the link but will keep looking . Thank you!!!
Thank you 😊 if you are watching on a phone there is a small down arrow by the right of the video title that drops down the video description. To see the full description sometime need to click more at the end too. Let me know that you got it or not so I can help if needed. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi Greg, can you tell me if I need special taps and shower with 12v connection using the water system you have or can I use standard domestic taps and shower mixer? Cheers Dave
You are a natural teacher. I really appreciate the clear breakdown and pictures always help🤙🏻
A picture speaks a thousand words. 👍🏼😊
Great video, very informative, I need to fit a system like this in my camper at some point, maybe this year, maybe next. I've been collecting the parts I want but couldn't settle on which pipe to use, after watching you with the JG push fit and how much you like it then I'm pretty much sold on it now, it just seems a bit too easy after working with copper and solder for so long, I'm a bit old school and set in my ways so it takes a while to settle on something and feel its right. Cheers
GMCBURBAN it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Really simple and easy to use and no leaks first time.
@@GregVirgoe Like you said, make a clean cut otherwise you'll nick the o'ring. Maybe even chamfer the ends. The clever thing about o'rings is that the surface area around the o'ring is larger then the area where the water is trying to get through. So the higher the water pressure, the tighter it seals. As opposed to a flat gasket type seal that pushes apart with pressure and eventually leaks.
@@JayDee-xj9lu chamfer the ends is a very good tip 👍🏼
Once again very helpful, schematic excellent,
Thanks very much Greg 👍
Mark Ord thanks for great feedback really appreciated
I’m a newbie. Single mom try to build my first skoolie alone. 😫 BUT this is ver informative. Thank you!!

Thanks Greg ! I live in Germany and sometimes I feel like buying stuff in UK, especially little fittings and hinges and more ... and the whole wish-list, cause what I find locally online is just not what I want.

Hi Greg, love the JG Speedfit fittings will definitely look at using those.
They are perfect for this job and so easy to install and leak free.
@@GregVirgoe Hi Greg - Just ordered the Shurflo Pump. Looking at ordering the piping and fittings - A lot of options seem to be either 10mm or 15mm rather than the 12mm you used, what are you thoughts on 10mm vs 12mm vs 15mm for a Van Build? It seems to me that the 10mm/15mm are easier to buy for and perhaps slightly cheaper than 12mm?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Many thanks, Lloydy

Hi Greg Virgoe, a thumbs up goes without saying. I also have a subscription. I think that the number of views is much higher than the number of thumbs up, is probably because some viewers come from various groups of Facebook and so on and do not have a youtube account. Because without a youtube account you can't give a thumbs up or click on a subscription. Thank you for your videos and all the best for you.
2012SUSE I really appreciate your support. Thank you for subscribing 😀👍🏼
This is so easily explained. Thank you so much!!
Once again top notch, thank you for making this all understandable 👍
Hi Greg,
firstly I need to say you are absolutely (bloody) amazing! I'm coming to you from Australia, we don't have a lot of van conversion builders as yet, or a lot of van self builders. I have already asked this question through a couple of Facebook groups, one being Australian and another being international and have not had any replies. I'm thinking you'll know the answer straight off the top of your head. I'm creating my own layout and would really appreciate your expertise. My water tank will be in my garage on the passenger side; shower/toilet will be on that same side along the wall, next to the bed; bed will only be King single size width ways; I know that means the shower/toilet will be on the wheel well and it seems there is a fibreglass wheel arch shower base which will be perfect; kitchen sink is going to be against the wall divider between the cab and the back, which will be behind the passenger seat. Finally to the question...is it possible for the plumbing/pipes etc., to go through the walls like the electrical wiring does, or the floor under everything and coming up through the framing the same way it does in a house, rather than having to go through all the other cabinets to get to the kitchen sink. I hope that makes sense and I really look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance, kind regards Vicki
Hi Vicki, yes it makes perfect sense, however I would not recommend hiding water pipes in walls and floors for the simple reason if you have a leak, it will do a lot of damage before you notice it and you'll have to dismantle your van to repair it. My water pipes run on show in the garage and at the back of the kitchen cupboards where I can see every joint. My waste pipes run under the van to the waste tank. Hope that helps and thanks for the lovely comment.
@@GregVirgoe I agree. You could cover the pipe in split convoluted hose to protect it. Or you could run the hoses under the van. Going through the wall will be difficult with all the frame work as well.
Nice, comprehensive video. Thanks!
You’re welcome ☺️
Thanks greg another great video keep them coming👌👌👌

Great explanation and thanks for sharing your diagram and parts lists.
Really useful information
Thanks very much
Hey Greg! Absolutely the best van build video on the internet. Thank you so much! Can you tell where to find this tap you where using?
Thanks , you make it look so simple . I can’t wait to get started !
Great info! The only annoying thing is that if you are using 12mm pipes, then the prices from the fittings are double the price! Next time I would go for 10mm or 15mm, since the pipes and fittings are available in any plumbing shop and are much much cheaper...
The trouble is a lot of motorhome appliances and devices use 12mm connectors so if you change the size of the pipe you end up buying loads of reducers and extra adapters. So it's six of one and half dozen of another. If you are going to change I would go for the 15mm as the bore size of the 10mm pipe is very small.
@@GregVirgoe thanks for the reply Greg! I've already layed down 12mm pipes under the floor so gonna have to cash out on the fittings. Just something I noticed and would of went 15mm if I had another chance. Only specific motorhome appliance I'm using is the Truma heater I took from a caravan. Motorhome companies rip us off with specific 12mm fittings... Less demand, higher prices. £4 for a 12mm elbow. £2 or something for 15mm equivalent if you get a pack, even cheaper when I went to a local plumber shop.
just got to see these while I work out what I actually want to build or use. What about gravity feed? If I put my water tanks on the roof, couldn't I use gravity to bring the water down, no pump required, except to the get the water up there in the first place? Just an idea I had. But I've saved a few of your videos, quality stuff fella.
Hello Mark, if you convert water pressure to meters head of water 1 Bar pressure = 10m Head pressure. My pump is rated at 2 Bar, which is the same as 20m height of the water, and 10x the height of a van. So if you put a tank on the roof which is 2m high the water pressure by gravity would only be 0.2 Bar or 3 PSI which is not much at all. Some taps and fittings like showers etc have a minimum pressure to operate correctly so you might find that at that pressure you'll get little to nothing out of your taps. Plus do you really want all that weight so high up on top of your van, it will affect the centre of gravity when cornering? I would place it low down and go with the water pump.
Thank you very much for the detailed diagram and explanation!! It has been very helpful in planning out my van build. I have one question. Did you add an on/off switch for the water pump?
Yes 👍🏼 you do need to switch it off if you run out of water because otherwise the pump just keeps running. Place the switch somewhere easy to access 😃
Hi Greg I noticed on your van build video you haven't used the red retainer clips on your push fit connectors, I have, I just wondered why you haven't being a belt and braces type of guy 😂 another top video btw👍🏻👍🏻
Boris_vanlife well spotted. If the Pipework is kept under pressure the joints are forced out naturally. You only get a slack joint when drained down. You are right they are a safety feature to keep the joints locked in. Never needed them before.
@@GregVirgoe that's what I thought but if the pump is turned off for a long period it may lose pressure. Thanks for replying 👍🏻
I saw on a RUclips vid about domestic (house) plumbing that the collet clips are really anti-interference devices for pipework in a public area where someone might fiddle with them. They stop the connections being pulled apart, rather than being needed to hold the system together.
I’m no expert, but the guy in the video was! 🙂
I need to do this in my tiny home, and the way you teach and have diagrammed makes me less scared. I'm assuming you are in the UK and "john guest" in the US is called PEK system (?)
There is a system called PEX which is commonly used for plumbing systems. John Guest is a push fit system that requires no soldering or other mechanical joints. Very easy to install with no leaks. 👍🏼😃
thanks made that easy to understand
Thank you. Very helpful.
