But it may have been mad brilliance! as so far the Warmasters plans where working out beyond all expectations! And lost within the enormous machinery of war a Colonel-Commissar was struggling to make the best of the tattered remnants he had saved

I saw it throughout my military service. NCOs and Officers who, while competent in their previous duties, become a living roadblock to any task at the new posting.

That's the problem with any business people will get promoted until they land in a role they aren't very good at.
Even during 2 wars, we saw it in the Marine Corps. We had good NCOs with 5 deployments constantly get passed over for some asskissing moron who'd scammed his way out of actually getting shot at as much as possible, and then the Corps wondered why they were losing Marines...
Military at least understands the Kirk Principle, that you can probably trust the guy who's risen up and then been busted down one rung on the ladder. Well, except for the fact that the film after that happened was 5, but the principle is sound

Except in the real world, you get more work with no promotion or pay raise. In a sense, its true; people who perform better will get more work and responsibilities, but with none of the benefits.
For those who are unaware, Arch went into further detail on the Peter Principle in his “why doesn’t technology advance in the imperium?” video. :D

I have to say, the two pictures of Gaunt and Rawne being depicted as Japanese is a bit off putting. Not that Japanese people are off putting, but we know full well that the Tanith are basically Irish/Welsh and Scottish and Gaunt is basically English.

I have recently started using lore videos as sleeping aid. I am, however happy to report that arch's videos are just too damn interesting to fall asleep to.
I have the opposite problem. I keep falling asleep to them before they're over, so I take up to a week getting through one xD Arch just has the perfect story teller voice it knocks me right out into blissfull sleep :D

Well the new Warmaster is certainly a step down in personal character from his predecessor even if his gambles are going well so far. It is also interesting how cunning and able low corruption servants of Chaos often are yet most cults race to the deep and crazed end of the pool. Why did the forces in the Sabbat Worlds stay mostly sane when the nature of Chaos should have drug them to crazy town long ago?
Probably because Dan Abnett wanted a "Different Kind" of Chaos Cultists for his stories and the Likes of the Blood Pact resonate across the Fandom to this day. Though as far In UNIVERSE explanations; I haven't the foggiest idea as it's usually the Tzeentch variety known for planing, schemes and cunning But it was never outright stated anywhere that even Khornate followers were Utterly incapable of such feats, just exceedingly rare...
There's plenty of bat shit nuts cultists and deeply depraved rites going on , especially in the later years of the crusade. Sek and the Gur are able to keep the worst of some of their underlings in check because they need manufacturing centers and food production but just look at what the glyph tattoos that have living Warp parasites embedded in them do to the poor people on world's that have been conquered

Tzeentch tends to draw people who are more cerebral in to start with and the best of them who scheme and scheme and plot and succeed tend to become better at it with his blessings. Khorne however wants blood for the sake of blood and his followers tend to derive pleasure from it so yes technically they're being drugged but Arch has a video about this on his channel for the Vraks series ruclips.net/video/5IeLOJoZAmw/видео.html this one I believe which explains how Chaos corruption actually works on a practical level. there is even a Chaos playlist!
In lore explanation is simply the leader is competent enough to maintain his reason and so enforces his will on his subordinates. Like with the Necrons maintaining their sense of self via a strong will, that sort of thing.
As for writing, I prefer this sort of thinking and calculating enemy over an enemy that spends his time screaming the normal phrases that lines up well with propaganda leaflets.

Hm, reading Guants Ghosts gave me a very diffrent impression of Macaroth. I always saw him as Incompetent, and dangerously so, a massive risk taker and a glory hound. I often likened him to Custer from the American Civil war, and later indian wars. So seeing this side of him is certainty interesting, and he is certainty still better then most imperial commanders.
It's difficult to say "he's facing overwhelming opposition and doing amazingly well, under the circumstances," to a guy eating cold nutrition bars in a shrapnel-scarred foxhole and the books are very much from that "on the ground" perspective.
The Tanith are lucky (!) enough to participate in a decisive campaign, mostly under leaders aiming for decisive victories. If this was one of the Imperial Guard's famous attrition campaigns, no one would survive the first trilogy.
I think he is given a better treatment in the last book
@@SnusmumrikslaActually getting first-hand contemporary information about the man helps. First few books, he is so vaguely defined that we only see a very skewed image of him.
I would be interested to see if anybody ever tracked the total number of Tanith troops (in theory) and then subsequent casualties. They're not getting reinforcements after all. I remember Gaunt talking about the idea that they're being whittled away at one point in the books.
If I recall, they pick up new troops from locals on the planets they fight on.

@@mrwri They pick up large numbers of troops from two different worlds. So the Tanith will one day all die off but the Regiment will live on.
They do get reinforcements, but Tanith deaths are still mentioned in nearly every book. Supposedly, they only had around 2800 of the 6000 of the Tanith 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. They lost nearly 300 just on the blue cross incendent on.... shit, the artillery fire that killed Cluggin. And then the other fight in First and Only, I bet they lost nearly 500 men all told in that book. That's down to 2300 original ghosts before Ghostmaker. And you have Vincula Insurgency as a.... prequel that takes places during First and Only. On the same world as Cluggin. Vincula is the province.

I honestly don't know how such a tiny Regiment such as the Tanith First and Only wasn't completely bled dry Long before where the Books currently are as it probably had 3,000 soldiers at most and their planet was gone.
I Hate how GW has "Regiments" set up In 40k they can literally be anywhere from 2,000 to 200,000 strong depending on the world or function (though only Krieg Siege Regiments are that big if memory serves). I'm fairly certain the Guard has Battalions larger than 2k troops. The logistics snarl for something like that has to be insane and it's clearly GW being well GW as the Anal Retentive types at the Administratum or Departmento Minutorum you think would be demanding on standardised large unit sizes at the bare minimum. It's a miracle that logistics works at all as well as it does in the Imperium.
This is actually a problem for the imperium, regiments get remade, destroyed, and absorbed based on the whims of generals, commissars, and planetary governors. Each administratum commutation center has to deal with hundreds of such groups.
It is very fitting for the setting where paperwork plays a vital function. I still remember there was an Armageddon regiment that accidentally was made of 20,000 instead of 2 thousand and got only the equipment for 2 thousand.
@anonymousguy720 simply steal the equipment from the 2000 man regiment that got enough equipment for 20000 men.

34:19 to be fair, if I remember right it was the local leadership that was insisted on putting the Tanith regiment in the middle of the toughtest trenchlines after aiding at defeating an attack soon after their arrival. The Locals had low technological level, and the generals didnt know any other warfare then trenchwar

“Deep Battle” is a bit of a meme, and political expedience rushed many engagements, but taking heavy casualties to engineer massive encirclements (so that later pockets can be safely* annihilated at lower rates) is arguably a fair trade.
@@RoboChocobo also the order of the day was rush to berlin and landgrab but to be fair to zhukovs rep he actively leaned into this idea of dangerous but totally callous and indifferent to casualties I believe he said publically about attacking assaulting minefields like they didn't exist
The Vitrian Dragoons are another awesome regiment as well with their unique glass scale armour that deflects and absorbs las beams really well, though i'll always wish the Vostroyans got more coverage (probably my all time favourite guard regiment).

Was gonna watch a different video, but I accidentally minimized it and saw this beauty on my screen. Obvious choice.
I mostly just do 40K via lore vids on RUclips but I've recently decided to start on the books.
With Gaunt's Ghost being the 1st series I'm starting so it'll be interesting hearing the story from both what Arch is covering and from what pops up on the book.
I can also heartily recommend the Ciaphas Cain series, if you are looking for something with more humour and intrigue spicing to the tale

The reault is the majority of people in all positions are incompetent at their position.

I love how in the grim darkness of the 41'st millennium, you can actually get ahead by being good at your job. These days in m.2 you just become too valuable for promotion.

Maccaroth seems to me more like vain glory fool who gets easy victories and those easy victories further feed his ego and delusions. For example, Nominax, his first capture of agrarian world. Since when those worlds were heavily defended in a first place? Also, aren't those Imperial worlds? You could literally park your fleet and convince population about the virtues of rejoining Imperium. I could had swayed that world without a single shot fired. But here is a vain glory fool who falls upon clueless worlds and conquers them to feed his ego and status.
