      Actually The Astronomicon and warp jump are about to be phased out in favor of Reverse-engineered webway as early as great crusade due to current imperium ftl tech stunts human's evolution into fully-psychic species, too bad, Navigator's greed comes to play on making emperor don't tell even primarchs his work on reverse-engineering webway, this leads to crimson king wrecks imperial webway beyond repair out of his curiosity
      And Necrons can do FTL without warp due to physics of 4th-dimension(cuz 4th spatial dimension are still part of materium instead of immaterium) cuz anything with mass move faster than light without getting infinite mass are only as impossible as move up and down in flatland

    Star Trek fan: Matter and antimatter are mutually annihilated in a fusion reaction that warps space-time sufficiently to drive the ship faster than light.

    Sure, the gellar fields flickering can be terrifying, but could you imagine if that happened on something like a grey knights ship as it travels? Just some lone bloodthirster gets on board and starts stalking the halls thinking "Swiggity swooty, I'm coming for that booty", it turns a corner and just runs into a knight in full gear cocking a shotgun as e1m1 starts playing.

      Honestly, if it even saw the grey knight coming, it should immediately be like "I'll just leave, sorry bothering you guys." And immediately duck back into the warp, and just hope they don't find it whenever it visits the materium next time.

    • @93Avenger93
      @93Avenger93 4 года назад +35

      Afaik 40k doesn’t have some specialized unique fuel for all ships, and warp engines do not use fuel at all.
      Or to put it another way: the warp engine draws power from the ship’s generator to tear a rift from reality to the immaterium, then the ship crosses that rift and it collapses. Once inside, it’s almost like sailing in the age of sail mixed with propulsion from the real space engines inside the geller field, using the tides of the warp and the currents of the immaterium to propel the ship through the sea of souls towards it’s destination where it will rip another hole out of the warp and into reality.
      You can’t exactly have engines in the traditional sense for inside the warp because ... well traditional physics no longer exists once inside. In that sense, the fuel is the navigator’s skill to guide and perhaps shape the warp currents around the little bubble of reality the ship sits in.

      I can see your point of view.
      And I understand why one could think that.
      But I personally disagree.
      The emperors project needed that level of secrecy to achieve succes.
      The only place in the galaxy the Chaos gods couldnt theoretically listen in, was in the emperors presence.
      And every primarch had the Chaos gods' eyes on them from the start.
      Essentially telling anyone who was not protected by the emperors direct presence.
      Would be the same as giving your opponent a detailed, step by step description of your long term plans for their demise.
      Generally unwise and thoroughly unadviceable.
      The primary point of failure for the emperors plans.
      Was his trust in the unity and ability of his pseudo children the primarchs.

    You forgot about the reverse time travel aspects of warp travel. On several occasions ships have gone into the warp only to end up weeks to years in the past. The word bearers series talked about an imperial group knowing about a warp route that did this and incorporating it into their battle plans. An ork warboss used the warp to travel back in time and killed an earlier version of himself so that he could get a copy of his favorite gun.

      @@lordfrostwind3151 it was mentioned first when the new Codex books started coming out post Gathering Storm and Dark Imperium, when the timeline jumps to the end of the Indomitus Crusade and the Plague Wars, everyone got new events added. The Tau codex in it's lore segment has some rather interesting things to say about that debacle and how it was covered up, though Shadowsun eventually finds the survivors (yeah, some lived) and it gets really ... interesting shall we say? It's also detailed upon in both Blood Angels codex and 8th edition codex as well. As for specific books dealing with the topic, sadly this falls into GW's and BL's lack of extensive writing on alien factions, there is only one book that deal with the topic afaik: War of Secrets by Phil Kelly, and that one is told from the perspective of a primaris Dark Angel dealing with a remnant from the 4th sphere of expansion.

Well, the majority of demons away ; some still pop in to say hi. But to the Orks, a demon incursion is just a great way to pass the time on a boring trip. Wow, there is a lot to process in all this. 1) I wonder if the human federation during the dark age of technology had a superior version of FTL since they wouldn't have had either the beacon of big E or navigators to make the journey. 2) The concepts surrounding the time dilation effects seem really underutilized in the lore, where are the books for a crusader era astartes fleet entering the warp before the heresy and coming out 10 thousand years later to find out that the Imperium they have dedicated their lives to has decayed into a monstrous parody of the emperors vision? Or a story about a ship of reinforcements arriving to a doomed world before the war has broken out which leads to a scramble to find a way to prevent its destruction. I'd read both of those.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 4 года назад +1

      The old human federation existed during a period where the warp was burned out, hung over, sleepy and quiet. (Because the last major event was the War In Heaven and the Eldar Gods were keeping things quiet.) It was things picking back up with Slanneish that proceeded to screw it all up for them. Even then, they had far superior real space drives so their shorter 'hops' were easier. Also they had Navigators, developed the gene type themselves from what I hear. The Emperor may or may not have been involved in that.

Every single human emotion becomes a power. Every single metaphor becomes a literal meaning. Everyone's wishes, dreams, desires, fears and nightmares are incarnated. Of course the reason the warp is so corrosive and horrifying is because so many conflicting and contradicting ideas are floating around inside of it. And the "Gods" are in fact, collective subconscious constructs that reflect crucial mental aspects of ALL life. Deamons are shards of their respective gods, much like individual cells make up an organism." Magnus the red from If the Emperor had a text to speech device episode 19: warp grumblings

As a note, humanity evidently did this as well back in the day. The Admech have a few hidden 'Void Impeller' ships that use that drive and the Necrons have an Inertialless Drive that seems to be such a drive, and potentially an advanced Void Impeller type.

      @Sorain1 4 года назад

      Not even remotely. Babylon 5 just used Hyperspace, which aside from having zero landmarks and space warping non-sense that'll tear you apart if you don't know it's there, is basically safe. The gates are cheaper on fuel then using your own drive, hence why they get used most of the time, but it's the same tech leading to the same hyperspace. Then there's Third Space, which as the Vorlons found out, is not nearly so nice. It's not The Warp level bad, but the locals are remarkably intolerant of anyone barging into their space.

    I remember reading a book about how modern laws being dangerously slow to catch up with technology, one of the ways they look at an example is a girl who is 12 years old from her perspective but is legally 30, because no politicians ever cared about space travel enough to include its necessities in a subsection of their laws. In the book this screws the Earth governments who aren't willing to change over repeatedly because they fail to keep their space colonies loyal.

    In much simpler way, the warp and real space are like different sides of the same coin.
