Hello Heline! Troy said in a docu that the Uileann pipes (Ill-en) are notoriously difficult to play because of a lot of moving parts made of wood and cane. "You need to be slightly....just slightly insane to play the instrument"😅

Love this lovely little instrumental song, at the midpoint in the setlist while Floor was making her costume change. Thank you for yet another reaction to our beloved band and the genius composer that Tuomas Holopainen is. There are many other Nightwish songs that make use of Troy's multi-instrumental talent on the Bouzouki, Uillean pipes, tin whistle, low whistle, acoustic guitar, electric guitar with or without an ebow, and using his vocals. Someone once asked him what he could not play and Troy replied "Hockey". Hope to see more of your Nightwish reactions.

Uilleann is Irish for elbow because the right elbow operates the bellows to inflate the bag under the left arm which is squeezed.

Troy is a special musician. He and Marco really excel here! For more Troy listen to elven jig and elvenpath, and is guitar work with Floor in 'How's the Heart Acoustic' on Planet Rock is delightful. The rest of Nightwish is pretty good too. 😅

    Nice reaction, thank you!
You might be interested in Elvenjig/Elvenpath from Buenos Aires. The first part features Troy with yet another wind instrument and a more modern version of his Uillean pipes. The second part is one of the oldest Nightwish songs, so no Troy there.

While the men were playing this, Floor was in back changing.the song after thisi s Bless the child. If you watch, after the intro is done, there's about a 4 second pause while everything stops, that's because it did! In back floor had changed into her skirt, but when she put on her top, the zipper under her left arm malfunctioned. They got it working. If you look, you'll see Floor RUNNING to her Mike stand! The whole concert was stopped until she started singing!

No Heline, you are a joy and receptive to new sounds and experiences.
If I could I would furnish you with a full array of Irish pipes and whistles.
You deserve them and I'm sure you would master them and excel.
What is most important is your passion and exuberance.
    It is infectious.
    Kudos, young Lady !!

Traditionally made Uillean pipes , like Troy is playing here, are notoriously difficult to keep in tune. In the Elvenjig/Elvenpath video you will see Troy playing a custom built stainless steel set. Also, as a solo instrument, you would have chanters attached. These are drone pipes ( similar to the 3 large pipes seen in Scottish bagpipes).

Yes, you meet the instrumental master of Nightwish.
The instrumental solo of Troy Donockley. The great man from the background.
    Playing almost every instrument.
He's taking us back to the old days of Keltic and Folk music. In to the Metal, it's Fantastic, it's sublime.

Do yourself a favour and listen to the introduction to the Buenos Aires 2018 show, a piece called Swanheart.
It's an Uilleann (pr. ill-ian) pipes solo
Troy is a remarkable musician and is now the leading exponent of the Uilleann Pipes since the great Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains died in 2021.
    Here's some more about Troy...
    Troy plays:
Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone
Troy about the pipes (in the "Please learn the Setlist" documentary):
"You have to be slightly insane to play them. They're not easy."
Members of band and crew on Troy:
TONI: Troy, the other new member, didn't have to jump in as dramatically [as Floor], but he has become an irreplaceable part of this group, too. If there's tension in the air for some reason, Troy casts a spell and magically dispels the bad vibes.
EWO: Troy radiates the kind of cheerfulness that we sulky northerners can only dream of, but I guess some of his positive attitude has rubbed off on us, too.
    TUOMAS on touring with Troy:
We start preparing about 30 minutes before the show [New York Hammerstein 2915], each of us in his or her own way. Floor changes on her stage clothes and warms up her voice in her dressing room, while we`re warming our fingers in ours. Back in the day, I used to get scared stiff before the show - it was just nauseating, pure horror. It all changed when Troy did some kind of a hypnotic trick to me in Los Angeles in 2012. I really don't know what happened during those twenty minutes, but afterwards, I haven't really panicked before going on slage.

6:33 Using breath to create vibrato may feel more natural, but it only works on instruments where you blow directly into the flute. It doesn't work for bagpipes with indirect breath support, and certainly not for uilleann pipes where you use your elbow instead of your lungs. If you master the finger-method, you can use it on all flute-like instruments regardless of how the air is blown through.
