Interesting factoid: Joakim Broden has no vocal training and never intended to be a singer. When Sabaton formed he was the keyboard player and had written a few songs which the band asked him to sing to get an idea of the melodies. The band did not have a lead singer and asked him to fill in until they could find one. As Joakim puts it, "They never did...lazy bastards."
Similar to Pär who never wanted to become a bass player but if I recall correctly they already had guitarists but no bass player so he went with playing bass instead 😂
I loved a lifetime of war but I can’t enjoy it anymore. The Swedish original had much better lyrics. It hits so much harder on every level. Every few months I’ll just throw it on repeat for hours
One of the very best things about Sabaton is their attention to historic detail and accuracy. Showing those Fairey Swordfish biplanes, launching from Ark Royal and hugging the wavetops to try to get torpedo hits on Bismark --- this video shows it better than anything I've seen.
Except for the video for "the Unkillable Soldier" which has several anachronisms/inaccuracies. But that's because Adrian Carton de Wiart's life and service was batshit insane. :)
They probably get the history correct more often than Hollywood. Of coarse they do work with a historian who moonlights in a few of their videos, and Indie helps host the Sabaton History Channel on RUclips.
they do a damn good job at telling a good story through music even if you don't understand the full context. plus, if anyone IS a little lost with what the song is about, there is the sabaton history channel that so thoughtfully explains it to you.
You should listen to him singing in his Swedish mother language - totally different. He said himself he emphasises the R in Englsih so much to mask the Swedish accent. "En livstid i krig" live Fun Fact -- the Bismarck is the only ship ever referred to as "he".
Rolling the R is often used for emphasis, I don't think it would fit "En Livstid i krig". Many Swedish artists in the 50's and 60's used this technique... One that comes to mind is Lill-babs, check the song "Tuff Brud I Lyxförpackning" and watch for the rolls.
Lindemann refers to her as a she in his speech in 1940 during the "Indienststellung". Never seem the claim that Bismarck was refered to as "he" verified. This is alleged by one of the former Crew but not supported by facts or verifiable in any way. The reports of the Kriegsmarine most offen mention "Bismarck", "The Bismarck" or "The Battleship Bismarck"

If you noticed, the Captain of the boat they go out searching for the Bismarck on had a locket at the end of the song... the same locket the seaman was given by the Captain of the Bismarck as the ship was sinking.
Yeah correct. The Bismarck was being shadowed by british cruisers after the battle of Denmark strait. Bismarck was hit by a few shells from hood and was going back to France for repairs. The British fleet only had the carrier Ark Royal in position to slow them down. After the torpedo attact Bismarck s rudder was demolished and sent the Bismarck in circles cause it couldn't steer. Allowing British battleships and cruisers to catch up and finally torpedo and send shells into her leading to her sinking
@@shawnengles8771 Don't forget the night before that final showdown a pack of RN Tribals with a Polish destroyer made several torpedo attacks in rough seas that may have had the only affect of keeping the Bismark's crew awake and on edge.
This was a fantastic winner for the Metal Theme. You're right. The compass is significant, but I haven't found reliable sources as to why. Fairly reasonable to assume the compass taken from the Bismark captain is the one the tugboat skipper has. Some folks point out the numbers scratched onto it match fairly well the coordinates where the ship sank. Others believe the skipper is a descendant of the rescued German sailor: son or grandson.
I figure the tugboat captain was the son of the Bismarck sailor who was rescued. I didn't think it was a compass, but a pocketwatch (which would have been more common at the time). Look at compasses back then and they typically didn't look like that, but pocketwatches did.
For Christmas you should look at their song Christmas Truce Also you should check out their former guitarist Tommy Johansson who has a golden voice. He has a RUclips channel and is also the singer of his own band Majestica
6:31 and a cat, curiously. unsinkable Sam, rescued by the british, and survived three ship sinkings in total until the brits decided that he might be bad luck.
The captain of the fishing vessel was the son or grandson of the survivor you see at the end of the video. It's the same compass with the coordinates inscribed.
You might want to check out Christmas Truce-it’s one of the most powerful and emotional war songs. The production is absolutely stunning, and Floor Jansen’s beautiful voice at the end takes it to another level. With Christmas just around the corner, it fits perfectly! 😊
That "lucky fellow" was actually the captain of the boat the band was on. If you follow the story of the video, you see where the Captain of the Bismarck carves something into the pocket watch/compass and later gives it to the young lad when he is dying on the ship. He survives and you see the pocket watch again in his hand when he is rescued by the allies... and right at the end when they are going back to the harbour you see the captain of the boat pulling said pocket watch out of his pocket, looking at it, probably reminiscing about his time on the Bismarck. It's a neat storytelling element that binds everything together.
6:34 and at least a dozen of the Bismarck crew and its naval regiment were captured and sent to Canada. Their treatment was really good from what I found out. There are at least 2 known to have stayed and lived in Canada. Helmut Keune being the only named individual, the others name remains unknown. Keune died in 1969 and it is unknown if he married and had children or was single
Since you liked this one there are a few more you ought to check out: "Christmas Truce", "1916" which is a Motörhead cover, "No Bullets Fly" animated version and "En livstid i krig" the Swedish version from the Gothenburg concert - with lyrics. Enjoy your trip down the Sabaton rabbithole.
fun fact, the lucky fella surviving the sinking is actually the old guy shown at the beginning and the end, who takes the crew to the place where it sunk, as he received the compass with the coordinates from the captain in the middle of the video.
Wargaming's World of Tanks division also did the CG for Primo Victoria and Steel Commander, plus added a Sabaton themed Tank to their World of Tanks Games.
I do love the fact that they don't outright state in the song that the allies sunk the Bismarck as it is disputed on whether the final torpedoes were the ones to cause him to start sinking or if it was the remaining crew that opened essentially scuttling hatches that would have flooded the ship. Regardless, he took a hell of a pummeling, and if I remember right, many of the British ships actually were nearly out of ammo. Another fun fact, Gunther Lutjens was the commanding officer on board during the Bismarck's First and final mission.
Sabaton does a wonderful job. Thanks for reviewing it. And lets take a moment to think about the brave sailors and soldiers on both the Bismark and the Hood that lost their lifes doing theit duty in a mad and senseless war.
This band has done so much to bring bring a new appeal base to history, to which I cannot thank them enough. Another amazing track and event depicted in such, "Hearts of Iron," about the men from Germany's 12th Armee (Wehrmacht) who effectively surrendered Berlin in order to save countless civilians and incapacitated soldiers from certain Soviet slaughter. Personal sidenote: My great-grandfather was an officer under General Wenck's command during those final days.
i believe you did a good job nailing why sabaton is so damn good as artists. heck, metal in my experience is usually just obnoxious screeching and bad music, but sabaton is heavy metal PERFECTED! their words are easy enough to follow, joakim perfectly executes the vocals, history is a passion of mine so they have a good story or message to tell in their songs, the instrumentation is just about perfect, and they often do good with the music videos. plus, when you go "behind the scenes" they seem like pretty chill dudes who i could probably see hanging out with despite their aggressive appearance.
Tommy Johansson; their (now former) guitarist is a monster of a vocalist as well! It may be worth a dive on his band Majestica! Awesome video as always!
6:34 The thing about that is that roughly 1000 went into the water. The British however left 800 to drown. Something that would repeat with Scharnhorst as well...

Interesting fact: The old guy manning the boat (The one holding the compass at the end) is the son of the last survivor of the Bismark sinking. PS: Watch the Animated story video for "No Bullets Fly," but don''t forget the tissues on that one.
I'll not forget my introduction to Sabaton - i did not even know the name of the band for quite some time - i stumbled upon a youtube-video yeeeaaars ago. It was about Sabaton's song Primo Victoria -and it was mixed with video-sequences from the game Hellgate: London - needless to say, it stuck with me.
When the Bismarck wreck was eventually found, despite having over 400 rounds fired into her at point blank range, it was discovered that there were no holes in the hull caused by artillery or torpedoes, which meant that the ship only sunk after the crew set scuttling charges. That's right. As a final act of defiance, the Bismarck withstood the full power of the Royal Navy and still refused go down.
If you didn’t notice the pocket watch in the video was from the captain of the Bismarck that mean the captain of the boat that sabaton was on served on the Bismarck or at least his like dad or grandfather did
What should be noted is the Bismarck was not the only ship of its class it had a sister ship Tirpitz. After chasing the Bismarck and sinking her the Royal Navy feared Tirpitz making a run of it. Tirpitz ended up getting locked down in Norway under near constant aerial bombardment never being able to leave port, got it the nickname Lonely Queen of the North.
"Primo Victoria", the name of the boat they were on, is also the name of another Sabaton song - worth a look! They froze on the boat, Joakim was probably bashing his leg to make sure it was still there! My Dad was RAN. His ship chased the KMS Scheer after HMS Jervis Bay was sunk - lucky for him and me he did not catch it, that time.
"However, in some swedish dialects..." It really heartens me to see my dialect (the main one using the uvular trill) actually being acknowledged as swedish for a change.
Fun Fact, the Bismarck was scuttled by the Germans themselfs instead of sunk bij enemy fire. From the wreckage was discovered that is has over 2000 impact marks and holes and was still able to sail, albeit in only a large circle since the rudder was destroyed
In case anyone's wondering, the Royal Navy's best warships...HMS Rodney and HMS King George V...along with cruisers Dorsetshire and Sheffield...spent more than 2 hours pummeling Bismarck in the final engagement. Rodney even put a torpedo into Bismarck, becoming the only battleship in all of history to torpedo another ship. And Bismarck still wouldn't sink. Dorsetshire put a spread of torpedoes into Bismarck and THAT wasn't enough. Bismarck's own crew had to put her down with scuttling charges.
Fun fact, Bismarck was found by Swedish pilots when it was stationed away in the Norwegian fjords and took aerial pictures of it and sent them to the brits and that is the only reason to why they found it
Sabaton's a wonderous rabbit hole to dive into especially if, like me, you're a history buff AND a metalhead. You now absolutely must check out The Christmas Truce, all about the rl truce of 1914, though that might actually be best saved for December since it's relatively close. Shiroyama and Rorke's Drift are another couple I'd recommend off the top of my head but I could go on.
The wreck of Bismarck was discovered on 8 June 1989 by Robert Ballard, the oceanographer responsible for finding RMS Titanic. Bismarck was found to be resting on her keel at a dept of approximately 4,791 m (15,719 ft), about 650 km (400 mi) west of Brest. 48°10′N 16°12′W
Battleships nearly always roll over when they sink. Those massive turrets are extra heavy since they are armour plated. Bismarck’s turret armour was a foot thick. The Yamato’s was 4 feet thick making one turret weigh as much as a whole fletcher class destroyer! You need to react to sabaton’s songs “Christmas truce” and “1916.”
I love how the chorus sounds almost like a marching army. The way Joakim emphasizes it like PRIDE of a NATION the BEAST made of STEEL each word sounds like a stomp
If you want to hear him sing in a low, soft whisper, check out The Hammer Has Fallen. It's one of their earliest songs, before they focused on military history.
Viewers who played the game World of Warships may have recognized the audio of the ships’ firing, the AA shooting, and torpedoes launching because these audios came from the game World of Warships.
Fantastic reaction, thanks very much! Another historical point: The Band spared the Moment, when HMS Hood got the one fatal hit very early in the first comat scene in the video. I think it was on purpose, and as I´ve heard from several naval historians who reacted on the Video, its because it was a major propaganda event for the Nazis, so they decided to NOT show this very Moment.
The allied did not sink the Bismarck, they made video like this because of the game. 1 torpedo hit the rudder, preventing the ship from steering and could only go in circles, but in the wreck they found all torpedo walls, none had taken any damage at all and the only penetrations of the hull(two) was way above the water line where it have very thin armor and almost no slope. The german crew sank the ship by placing explosives on the insides, to prevent the flagship of n-germany, the pride of adolf, to fall in to the hands of the allies
I have never heard of the band or this song but it is amazing. You would have loved rocking and head banging in the sixties and seventies to the QUO . I remember when i could do that with my hair ,sadly now i cannot find it .

Very cool band who do some real good historic storytelling with music! Love that approach!
Just watched them in concert a few weeks ago when they opened for judas priest. They put on a great show.
thx for the detailed infos about how the singer builds his tone / sound!!!!! Best regards :)
Keune died in 1969 and it is unknown if he married and had children or was single
great live too, I saw them in Glasgow and they blew my mind
Since you liked this one there are a few more you ought to check out: "Christmas Truce", "1916" which is a Motörhead cover, "No Bullets Fly" animated version and "En livstid i krig" the Swedish version from the Gothenburg concert - with lyrics. Enjoy your trip down the Sabaton rabbithole.
As Christmas approaches, please react to‘Christmas Truce’ by Sabaton.
fun fact, the lucky fella surviving the sinking is actually the old guy shown at the beginning and the end, who takes the crew to the place where it sunk, as he received the compass with the coordinates from the captain in the middle of the video.
I love Sabaton. They are so good band. And it is also nice the songs make you learn more about history.
Tommy Johansson is not from Falun....his from a small town way up north. Boden ❤️
Bravo bravo bravo me encantó el vídeo la música la banda la coach ❤ todo bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
Not just funding, World of Warships developer did the CG. Just super impressive all around.
WATCH THEM LIVE...ANY SONG...ANY TOUR...PURE EPICNESS
I don't think I have ever been in love before, but my god I think I'm in love with Beth Roars. I have never been so vulnerable in my life, and I found this channel by accident. Best suggestion I have ever had. I am now addicted to this channel and learning so much. Always fancied myself as a singer and this channel has helped beyond belief. I absolutely love Beth Roars. Her Celtic sounds leave me breathless. I've always wanted to have a future in Scotland. So Beth If you are listening, I see no ring on your finger... I can help you with that, If you fancy a Yorkshire lad from England in your life.
Also I really love you.
❤as a fan of history AND JONNY HORTON who sang a song SINK THE BISMARK this makes me happy
the name of the boat 'primo victoria' is the name of one of their albums and songs
Interesting fact: The old guy manning the boat (The one holding the compass at the end) is the son of the last survivor of the Bismark sinking.
PS: Watch the Animated story video for "No Bullets Fly," but don''t forget the tissues on that one.
Please. Watch 1916. A cover that Motorhead first did. Gut wrenching. Then react to Motorheads version. Even more gut wrenching.
I can not believe you have not done Christmas truce by Sabaton, you will love it!
Hey, hey, hey! Don't leave out Rhapsody! They're a damn good power metal band too!
If you didn’t notice the pocket watch in the video was from the captain of the Bismarck that mean the captain of the boat that sabaton was on served on the Bismarck or at least his like dad or grandfather did
Wow...they were just here in Wisconsin...not huge on metal but they have a unique, exciting sound...really talented! 👍
Please check out Tommy Johansson’s channel, the former lead guitarist in Sabaton. Awesome singer! Great reaction!👏
Indy Neidell is also one of the VO artists who did the "Probably the best beer in the world" voice lines in Carlsberg commercials.
Beth still rules and still roars!
The boat captain at the start is the guy pulled from the water after the sinking
Finaaly Beth. Thank you
I watch these just to see your smile !
I love how the chorus sounds almost like a marching army. The way Joakim emphasizes it like PRIDE of a NATION the BEAST made of STEEL each word sounds like a stomp
Christmas Truce definitely must be next one. One powerful song about one powerful moment in history.
If you want to hear him sing in a low, soft whisper, check out The Hammer Has Fallen. It's one of their earliest songs, before they focused on military history.
Great reaction! Great band! Great song! Great movie! Great facts!..Gorgious lady!! 😍
Night Witches full animated story. The song kicks all kinds of butt but the ending, have tissues ready. It gets me emotional every time.
Viewers who played the game World of Warships may have recognized the audio of the ships’ firing, the AA shooting, and torpedoes launching because these audios came from the game World of Warships.
Their music videos could totally be merged together into a movie, high quality stuff :p
Random info: The band Heaven Shall Burn made a song about Tirpitz, the other ship of the Bismarck class. That song has quite the different vibe.
The numbers etched into the compass are the coordinates where Bismark sank.
I remember when i could do that with my hair ,sadly now i cannot find it .
as someone who served in the US Navy for a decade, this is my favorite Sabaton song.
Thanks for your service, @SolidShepard!
