Excellent restoration Gavin. I had the original back in 87-88. Yes it was a pig to work on and the front anti sway bar is an absolute must on these. Totally improved the driving. I do remember it being a bit slower than my other Tamiyas but it was okay for the time. Sadly I sold all my old stuff, two Hornets, Fox, Wild One and Frog to a friend and never saw them again. Last week I built an Avante 2011 and am back in love with Tamiya cars. Awesome Homage to your Dad's Fox too mate... Really touching tribute.
I restored mine years ago I happen to get lucky and found a mom and pop hobby store with a back room gold mine of vintage parts. All the years of racing it I ended up with tons of parts from back on the day like those axles.
Looks awsome in that yellow, your a brave man running period electrics. I restored a cougar, had full period electrics in it, had a run away into a kerb 😭 did more damage than ive ever seen before 😂
I still have the original one...still waiting for parts to no availability. 8.4v batt and a novak turbo motor with a novak forward only speed controller back in the late 80's...i used to race taxi's down my street....
Beautiful Gav , she's got a lot of life left in her still. The 21 turn motor definitely goes pretty well . But yes being a vintage original Tamiya Fox she needs to well looked after 👌👍
Wow! Didn't realise how many differences there were from the rere and the rarity of the parts. And there I've been recklessly thrashing my original around 😳. Will be a little more cautious now. Also, that yellow colour really looks cool. The story behind it is also very cool. Thanks for sharing it with us.
the fox was my first car at age 12. It had a terrible problem with that sealed chassis, where if you did a lot of maintenance, and kept unscrewing it, then the Threads would hollow out in the plastic, and you could no longer screw in the top half of the body in a secure way. I never got the stabilizer, and the front shocks just looked wonky and uneven. The shocks never seemed stiff enough, and as I bashed it around the backyard it really got beaten up. I owe that old car an apology, and my new NovaFox is a pure shelf queen. :)
LOL it actually went well and it was compliant. It was not a long drive and I went easy with the motor choice. A little quicker than stock to be fun, but not putting too much stress on the old girl. Perfect fit that was.
This brings back sooo many memories...I loved my Fox but man it wasn't easy to work on! I raced the heck out of mine so I was an expert at taking it apart after a while. It was never the fastest buggy but it was pretty reliable as long as you didn't hit anything too hard and the waterproofing worked fairly well, I drowned mine in puddles a few times with no lasting effects! Happy days 🤣
Hahaha sorry I was going down memorylane and re-watched some of my fav older shows 😂😊❤️ the Nova Fox is super cool but I must admit the re-make of your fathers Fox livery is my favorite ❤️
Hey the guy in the van is on the wrong side. Lol. Vary neat restore. I match my motors too. It was cool the guy stopped. The Fox did have some pep to it.
I had one but the drive shafts let it down I found it a great easy to clean car after a wet day's racing replaced the drive shafts with dog bones that made it go faster
Awesome. I was actually able to throw in a new battery to my original Fox, to include the original Futaba Attack and drive it around the house! Unfortunately, those mechanical speed controller can put out a lot of heat, so back in the day I used a small drill bit to add ‘speed holes’ to the upper chassis plate to let the heat out. Looking for an original replacement now.
Beautiful work as always Gavin 👌. Absolutely spectacular but like many other fans of your channel I do admit it is so scary to take it onto a public Rd as it's a genuine vintage car and the thought of a mishap is scary. All in all its beautiful and a wonderful tribute to your Dad. I also have a genuine vintage 1985-1986 Tamiya Fox in original box art that I got as a present from my parents in original condition.i tried a new battery but my old girl is very old and I just keep her as a memory of my youth. Great work as always Gavin.👍
I have a Novafox, not the easiest of builds, and picked up an old Fox (not working) and restored it for my son. OMG they are a pain to work on! Took me forever to get it done.
Good to see that running Gavin :) went well considering it had that MSC installed. I quite like the HH retro sport motors I have one in my Marui shogun and run the 21 turns in my clod as there zero timing motors. Very nice looking vintage Fox ;)
Nice job, Gav - I've restored a few of these.....not the easiest buggy to rebuild, I agree. I bet the sadist that designed this sealed chassis also came up with the Hotshot haha....!
Love my Novafox but I'm scared to ever drive it for fear of breaking it and spares are unique to that car. Also agree maintenance is a nightmare, and I also find the body never sits very level due to the cable exit. The steering is also weird, but with all its quirks it's still a thing of beauty.
Fantastic video. Very underrated at the time The Fox. Nice also to see you using the RC8X which seems to be getting a bit slated due to users not reading the instructions etc. if it’s good enough for RCKicks….. 😀😀
That's why I'm giving it a bit of time to get my head around everything before making a review video. This thing is packed with features and functions so it takes a bit of time.
Ohhhhh, so thats what that wierd metal thing is, a servo spacer. Ive got about 2/3 of a fox in bits in a box. Not sure if its worth the rabbit hole of getting the gearbox back in.
What did you do about the terrible steering issues? I have the original FOX and made the mistake of buying the NOVA for my son. We out fitted the bottom with metal skids and bumpers and it looks great and we even used a zVintage Novak TX-1 forward only no limit ESC and he hates it so much it’s a beautiful Shelf Queen. Sad Dad. BTW the Fox can Accommodate 6 different pinion gears. Yup. I dislike the new style sway bars front and still used the old style sway bars from Parma in the rear.
You will never have a sharp turn in on a fox as it’s such a long wheelbase rear motor 2WD buggy. You can optimise it as much as possible but you can’t eradicate it
That's dedication. Does that horizontal single shock really make a difference in the way the car turns or handles rough surfaces? I know you have a couple of these buggies with that feature. Would it be worthwhile to put a new tech oil filled shock on one? Just curious.
Not sure if you're asking about the wire rubber surround that fits into the chassis and holds the wires in place when you screw the chassis down or how I rewired the new motor? if so this comes in the kit but most get lose over the years. If its the motor, I just cut the vintage wire off the old motor, removed a few mm of the cable sheath and then place some heat shrink tubing down the wire. Solder up the wire ends and the motor tabs. Joint them together and then slide the heat shrink down over the solder joints. Shrink the cover around the joins. :) Job done and it looks like stock. Sorry if this wasn't what you asked about.
I call it the being fe ed you know what got me that same thing happened to me on my hotshot that's what holes inside of the gearbox that's why I hated the vintage cars now I remember putting that c-clip on there is like putting on a miracle something that I need you have to have a very clean house and use a solid 🤍 that's like you disassembled and reassembled the whole car that goes to show how much you love I probably would do the same thing but with more detail T Genova fox
Great motors .I use the 19t version in a sand scorcher ,goes really well even in low gear on grass it’ll get the front wheels up in the air with no effort at all .great for 23 quid ❤
@@RCKickschannel I forgot I fitted the 21 turn version in my mad bull, that is just enough for it ,good motors .I’d put them up against the BZ stock motor.I’ve gone through 2 BZ’s on grass ,they just don’t seem to last off road ,I’ve not had much luck with tamiya motors or Esc’s I use hobbywing and the holmes or LRP …

Not easy to restore a vintage Fox these days, even with the rere Nova.
Loved the guy pulling over to take a look. Brilliant
We talked for a while. He had them as a kid.
He could tell it was a Tamiya
Loved seeing that old Fox on the road again. Thanks Gavin!
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow, they really did simplify a lot of things on the Nova Fox! I can't believe the length of that whole servo saver contraption! LOL!
I know LOL, it looked a bit nuts right.
The Fox is a lot of fun to drive, have to agree with that. Very tail happy buggy
Looks awsome in that yellow, your a brave man running period electrics. I restored a cougar, had full period electrics in it, had a run away into a kerb 😭 did more damage than ive ever seen before 😂

I reckon we need a blockhead addition !!
As long as it was not the same livery as the HS2 and Wild One, sounds good.
Good to see the public taking an interest in your rc buggy Gavin. Good job on the Fox.

Love the simple colour scheme.
Man the whole time I was super nervous internally screaming “TAKE THAT BACK IN THE HOUSE!!!”
LOL it actually went well and it was compliant. It was not a long drive and I went easy with the motor choice. A little quicker than stock to be fun, but not putting too much stress on the old girl. Perfect fit that was.
My thoughts exactly 👍
Awesome. I'm sure you dad would have loved it!
Great restoration. I have a 30 year old Falcon in the cupboard and it still runs.
Great job on the restoration Gav. 👍 Love the Fox. Really wanted one back in the day, despite them being a pain to work on.
Back when I was racing The Fox in the 80s we use to cut the top chassis open to get to everything. Saved hours of work 👍
I can understand why LOL
That looks ace.
The beefy drive shafts I like the most.
Top job on the restoration.
Cheers from Slovenia.
This was my very first car, i love it.

You can put a modern battery inside the case of the humpback battery.
I love the Kyosho Ultima, hands down. But Ive always wanted a Fox. Gonna enjoy this.
I really thought that guy was gonna do a runner with it 😂 great honest restoration 👌🏻
A fantastic job Gav 👍

Yep it would be easy to damage it but I know a few of you want to see them running, even if its just for a quick zoom.
I have a Novafox, not the easiest of builds, and picked up an old Fox (not working) and restored it for my son. OMG they are a pain to work on! Took me forever to get it done.
Yep, I’ve worked on easier vintage cars that’s for sure. That said, the Fox does have something special about it
Had an original back in the day and went through several rear diff cases ..it did get abused mind great little buggy .never been to keen on the body .

@@RCKickschannel Do you know when its coming or is it a summer release. P.S your build is beautiful love the color scheme 👌

Tamiya should keep producing parts. That's the problem with the re-re's.. They don't make spares for them.

what do you reckon 1985 fox kit still new in the box or new novafox

Two shocks is a better option but the single shock is a cool novelty.
How do you fix where the motor wires come out with out damageing the wires?
