Dang Guy 3 years later , your drivin the "Gasser"Nova to Cruise the Coast , I'm watching this thinking this Nova is kicking your but especially after watching you take your 64 Chevy Nova 6cyl. And turn it into a "Gasser" with alot fewer issues !!!
Don’t get discouraged. You help keep me motivated. I’m rebuilding my first home, that I rented for 18 years. What a disaster! One of my favorite expressions is,”How do you eat an Elephant?, One bite at a time!” keep at it and you will prevail.
Watching you work use your parts that people ordinarily wouldn't use reminds me of my son recently passed away and I really enjoy watching your Channel
Thanks for showing us the pitfalls of this swap. I'm literally doing the exact same thing. 4 speed replacing th350, low back buckets, dash pad, package tray and carpet kit. Your posts will hopefully save me a bunch of head scratching.
Dan, hang tough, you'll get it. Give yourself a break too. You're working a full-time job and then working another full time job rebuilding these cars. Take a day off for yourself and you get a fresh perspective. I love your knowledge of these cars, you've got me thinking to buy a car and work on it on weekends.
@@DDSpeedShop I'm thinking of a used jeep. Plenty of easy to get parts. Fun to drive in summer and I can use at as a snow plow in winter. My daily driver is a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500. When I suggested you take a day off. I didn't mean sit around. I'm sure you have plenty of scenic places to visit by you for a day trip. Much success.
Reminds me of my first hot rod build when I was a 16 year old teenager. I cobbled a 327 and 3 speed transmission into a '50 Chevy Sedan Delivery. It was fast and looked cool but I'd never build a car like that today. It was a cobbled up mess and wasn't safe. I'd like to build another '50 Sedan Delivery again but "do it right" this time.
in my younger days, the rod from Z bar to fork, its pointed with small ball end, it would poke through & split the fork using stiff pressure plated, so we would use different things, but 1 would be a smooth carriage bolt, with grease grooves cut into head for lubrication, I have seen rocker arm balls welded with grooves. but a wider spread ball so wont break fork. and cheap carriage bolts would bend, so had to re-enforce threaded area with a small sleeve, or weld rods around like 4 around the threaded rod, stupid, but it worked, & this is from 20+ years ago when I was extremely involved with street racing.
Yrs ago when these type of problems arose my ol lady would ask "why don't you pay someone to mess with that?* and I answered "I am the type of guy you pay to mess with this" she realized what being a car guy was all about, lol.
Shit happens when you party naked on the beach in your mukluks. Its all part of Hot Rodding. Time and patience my friend and the badass Nova will be roasting the hides in no time. Cheers from Saskatchewan
There should be a factory stamped piece that will fill the hole in the floor for the shifter. The floors were made this way to ease production. Then if the car needed a 4 speed it got one type of filler and another for automatics. I have found these pieces on Ebay in the past. Hope this helps.
There is always obstacles to overcome when doing stuff like this im 66 now and been doing this stuff since I was like 13, still running into problems but I learned to be smarter than the problems , lol.
Those headers are another pain in the ass, I bought a set from HOOKER, I have a 454 in my car, supposed to be a direct fit, yeah right felt like I was back in my teens again with the same installation problems
Hey Bro, I've been watching the 4 speed transformation of the Nova, and I don't think that I ever saw you put in the bushing into the rear of the crankshaft for the tip of the transmission to go into. Man I sure hope that you did. If not that thing is going to vibrate and tear itself all apart! Anyway, love the videos, you're doing awesome with your show. Oh! Just wondering if the girlfriend ever helps you out by handing you tools and whatnot? Doing all that by yourself can be tedious and lonely too. Having to climb up and out of wherever to get stuff sucks unless y'all have a great helper. Just wondering, that's about it for now. Might chime in on your next one, have a great Friday Bro!
I feel your pain my friend. I was 're-doing my 67 Chevrolet and put on a scatter shield also. Somehow I dropped a bolt or wicket (this was 40 years ago) down the hole for the clutch fork. Yikes ! I tried for days to get it out of there without pulling everything apart. I got soooo pissed that I walked away for weeks. Like you I was working by myself so I just wanted to give up. I came back one day went at it one more time with a long magnet and got it out the 2nd or 3rd try. I almost cried.
Those Hurst sticks in various lengths used to be all over the place, I guess not so much these days. Straight 12" was my favorite in a bucket seat car for street, maybe an 8" for the track.
Nova's in beautiful shape!!! Kinda rare. I had a 72 Nova SS and I hate to say it but I put it on a 78 Cherokee frame. Had 44s on it. Looked bad ass but ruined a classic. But then it was 30 years ago. Anyways your doing exc work my friend. Always a problem wit headers but you'll get it. Just keep on keeping on
On my Firebird I had to cut off the arm that goes to clutch fork and move it inboard a bit. To clear header pipe. Then welded it back on. Pontiac motor tho. Probably way different. I hope the guy who always comments in my videos “it’s an engine, not a motor” sees that.
I too had a similar problem with my shifting Rods I ordered a kit from Hurst with all new bushings which were made out of brass instead of nylon tightened up the shifter a lot
I feel your pain Brother, I dropped my TH400 for a 4 speed conversion on a 70's Trans-Am and ran into no end of unexpected hoops to jump through just like you did and the downer car was commensurate year group...Go figure!!!
It always seems one step forward two steps back. You be got a header issue on a 74Hurst Olds right now so I gotta pull it out (again) and massage it for starter clearance. It will be nice when done but is frustrating during the ordeal Keep with it and in the end it will be nice

Do you have the OEM clutch release spring and the rod it hooks to? Just asking because it gets kinda busy getting a clutch return spring to work without interference .it should run from the motor mount or area back to the clutch fork
I seem to recall you got a set of headers not too long ago on clearance from the auto parts store. Were they for a small block? Maybe they will fit the Nova.
If the Nova mid-lengths fit the 57 and the 57's full length's fit the Nova, couldn't you swap them? I understand you would have to adapt the current 57's exhaust onto the shorter mid-lengths.
