On my 72 Nova I put big block springs in the front suspension & installed a small block & was glad I did because driving it on the street with all of the speed bumps & dips would have caused the oil pan to be demolished . They make adjustable coil overs for the front that makes a vast improvement in handling ! If you get in the throttle & the front end comes up (like mine did) the suspension needs to be for a big block !

Looks good. Having put a big block in my 71 Nova, I have a few tips for those contimplating it. It will sit on small block mounts, but header clearance gets really tight. Big block mounts move it to the passengerside and forward a smidge.. Also big block cars use a different heater core and cover. The engine gets real tight to the heater hoses with a small block core.
A little tip of the transmission too. If you want to figure out 10 vs 26 spline input before you pull the trans, loom at the tailshaft. As long as nobody has done anything funky to the trans, the yoke will tell you what clutch you need. GM used 2 different yoke sizes. A 27 spline (th-350, ppwerglide) and a 32 spline (th-400). If the trans has the smaller yoke it will be a 10 spline input, and the bigger yoke trans will have the 26 spline input. Again, thats assuming nobody did any mixing and matching in the past.

Take the small block heater core tun it 180deg. It moves the tubes way towards the fender. Similar to a big block. Drill two new holes in the heater box for the hoses. The clamps end up inside the heater box, but works out really good. Patch the original holes, you’re done. Works pretty slick really and no cost just time.

I used the eBay stainless headers on my 72 4 speed car. Had to dent them in a few places but they have 2 inch primary tubes but for $180 couldn’t beat the fit. Years ago I put a big block in a 69 camaro and I used the small block frame mounts and some flow tech headers and it fit perfect

Big Blocks in Novas was always a car I looked up to. It worried the Hell of Guys that owned Big Block
Chevelles because it just had the right hook up to be quick. Glad you are building one, Don't worry about gas millage at a quarter of a mile runs Just drive it.

You must have had some good tires plus traction bars and other goodies on it to make it hook. My dad had a 70 nova with just a 400 plus hp 350 and 4spd in it and it would just light the tires up on command. Got almost zero traction. Lol

Love Novas - had a '69 parted together out of the junkyard back in the 80's. 454 4sp in a car that started with a 6 cyl 3sp combo. Man those were the days. Parts were cheap and GM builds were easy! Great content and looking forward to the "Street Freak" look (mine had 3" lift springs in front and "custom" lift spring pack in rear scavenged from a 3/4 ton Chevy van). All the best and appreciate the awesome content!!

Of course you need to leave the 350 badges and change the ring and pinion to a 373 or 411.

Chevrolet reversed the heater core on the big block Camaro's & Nova's. Same heater box but the nipples came out closed to the right fender. You need to cut an oval slot to fit. There was an oval plate with a sheet metal screw top & bottom around the nipples. The foam gasket covered the small block nipple holes in the firewall. I never changed a heater core so I don't know if it's the same core. I had several big block cars back in the day. Love the 500 ft lbs off idle.

I was always told that the true SS novas from that body style were difficult to identify. I could be wrong, but I had always heard that the SS novas came with a 12 bolt rearend, a larger fuel line, and never came with a bench seat. That's what we always looked for when buying an "SS" nova when documents numbers matching motor and stuff was missing.

Not sure if that was still true for 71'. And vin # and body tag don't tell if it's an SS. Only the build sheet. Not sure on 71' but 69' they're supposed to be on top of the fuel tank.

Hook you engine hoist back up and take out the drivers side engine mount bolt. Slight lifting will get that header to fit like a glove. Also if you had 396 engine emblems on the front fenders. OOOh We are Sneaky like that. Had a 396 dual tunnel rammed motor in a 65 Chevelle that ate a lot of lunches. Your Truckers who we support are the reason your waiting on parts. Worth It.

Great video, I put a 454 in a 1969 that had a 307 I used the small block mounts it fit no issues. Had ps with long tube headers don't remember the brand.

Yes it looks good if you're going for that look 💯👍👍. I hope you don't destroy your nice black hood, you should find another hood to cut the whole in, just incase you ever go back to a regular engine. You're doing a fantastic job on all of your projects keep up the great work. God Bless you guys and your family. 💯👍👍🙏🙏✌😊✌👌

Guy in my neighbourhood when I was a teenager had a '72 with a blower sticking out of the hood. That's what I see here. The tunnel ram is cool! ... Blower would be HOT!!

TIP ** some aftermarket company unknown name what company ) makes a 180 degree flip for heater core firewall cover... so the heater core outlets do not hit the passenger side valve cover

Whoever said the engine hoist would kill you is crazy! I have the same one, I've used it to hoist several V8s and even the bed off my truck so I could swap the fuel pump.

Seems as it is a 4 speed, why don’t you pull the transmission before you pull the engine. I would think it would make jerking the engine so much easier

The crane is fine, I've been using my Harbor Freight crane for over 25 years and the only I've done is put a new hydraulic ram because I wore is out.

The only time my cherry picker crane bent and tipped over was only after I took the wheels off it so I can get it lower under the A-Frame on a low Vaga Wagon my cherry picker has handlebars on the backside for jerking and moving it around mine's just like yours other than the handlebars I purchase mine from the fire department

As much engine swapping you do, using petcocks for block drains would be helpful and prevent the coolant spills. Nice car. I’d focus more on the nova rather than the tri-5 cars.

Nova looks bad-ass. I don't know why anyone is bitching about your engine hoist, I've seen worse in commercial shops. It ain't what you got, it's how you use it, as long as you work safely it will be safe.

First gen Camaro and Nova are the exact same, so be on the lookout for Hooker super comp headers for best fit around steering. Comp work ok,but require some hammering around steering box and if budget doesn’t matter, Lemons make one of the best fitting headers for f - body chassis’s.

Looks bitchin' Dan! As to the cherry picker comment, whoever made it likely never used one. I have a Harbor Freight one like that, and it's ok. The only concern for me would be ram, but chance of a catastrophic failure in it is no more than one in any other.
