Me too, although I do quite like the Russell Crowe version. Kevin Costner's woeful attempt is best not even mentioned, but I have, so sorry for that. Lol.
To me, the Errol Flynn version is the best. The Disney version was my introduction to it in childhood and is just fine given the small budget it had to work with. No opinion on the Kevin Costner version. Mel Brooks's version was hilarious. But the Russell Crowe version was so boring that it put me to sleep.
I agree that the final outtake scene with Robin and Marian riding off in the sunset should have been edited out. Seeing the doors of the castle closing after the two leave symbolizes the closing of the story.
Great stuff! ....Errol Flynn's co star, Olivia de Havilland, at 7:42, just turned 101! My grandfather was a crew grip on this epic version of Robin Hood...
Not forgetting, Marion, "Why do you hate The Normans so much ?" Robin, "It's injustice I hate, not The Normans". That response has stayed with me since I was a goggle eyed lad soaking up every scene containing the Mighty Flynn.
Nice ! Olivia de Havilland is by far the best maid Marion to have ever graced the screen. And here we are almost 100 years later still unable to rival the original Errol Flynn adventures of Robin Hood it was simply the best and being in color for the time. Had to be amazing to the people that grew up never seen color on the screen I think we could all go back a little bit in time more simple easier life.
This Awesome short film presenting behind the scenes of Errol Flynn's ROBIN HOOD full and completely proves my point that Errol Flynn is one of Hollywood's most underated Actors & Hollywood Legends! Just watch the part where Errol gets zipped up the roap and then the short clip of Errol and another fave of mine Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) sword fight. Watch Errol seemlessly soar over the overturned table and pick right up with skilled sword work with Basil!! Wow, I am totally in awe and Thanks ever so much! Gordon Welke (p.s. I love the way Director Michael Curtiz dresses, as does the rest of the crew, it speaks volumes about the way people were in those times, generally speaking ofcourse.
I can't help but think had Errol Flynn magically woke up and it was 2020 he had yet to start in a major motion picture but just by the virtue of him being him there is no doubt in my mind he would be in the ranks with the newer guys Brad Pitt Ben Affleck Matt Damon all of them you know so many people the name I mean it's almost 100 years after his first film and people are still talking about him and like us are watching desperately any little tidbit of information about movies he was a true star.
The mistake they keep making over and over again is trying to make a Robin Hood movie that is "realistic" (which has come to mean grimy and depressing), and grimdark. In order for a Robin Hood movie to be a Robin Hood movie, it needs to have a certain amount of levity, dash, and a sense of fun. Present day movie makers are too focused on bashing the audience over the head with the idea that everyone and everything in the Middle Ages sucked.
Scariest Possible Casting : Warner's originally wanted James Cagney to play Robin Hood! ... Ugh! "Sir Guy,You Dirty Rat!" and "Made it Marion! Top of the Castle!"
I have a belt that was worn by one of the trumpet players, in the Nottingham castle feast scene. It’s turquoise blue, with gold braid trim. It can be clearly seen as the camera moves past the musicians. Later on in the film, it can again be seen, in the archery tournament scene. A very rare piece of wardrobe.
I moved to Chico because I was going to Butte College for nursing. One thing you learn about Chico is Robinhood and filming parts of the scenes in Bidwell Park.
One correction...the Warner ranch was not located in Calabasas. It was part of Canoga Park and Woodland Hills which at the time was called Girard. It is now called Warner Center and is a major business hub of Los Angeles with Malls, homes, apartments, giant, big and small business', Pierce jr college and a major hospital. The Apollo engines for the space program to the moon were also build there at Rockwell International. I use to play on the massive property when I was a kid. Oranges galore..
As far as I'm concern there is only one Robin Hood and that"s Errol Flynn but I also liked Carey Eweles who unlike some other Robin Hood could speak with an English Accent.

Thanks again- soo great to see this stuff! Really appreciate you uploading this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's strange that if you compare this Robin Hood film to the Kevin Costner or Russell Crowe versions they actually come across as incredibly dull. Did modern day directors forget how to make great movies?
I think it comes down to preference. Some prefer this version as it excites them and for a plethora of other reasons. Some will prefer the Costner and Crowe version as they excite them and for a plethora of other reasons. Personally i like the Flynn and Costner version (for different reasons but they are equally great movies). But I say again. It’s just down to preference. For example lots of my friends find the the transformers or dark knight movies to be really exhilarating. Personally I think they are the most boring movies ever put to screen. People love Michael bay. I hate his movies. I love Steven Spielberg. A lot of people hate him these days. It’s just preference and the preference of the general public will naturally change over time.
This is a GREAT Movie. Seen it so many times! Also, watch the 1922 "Robin Hood" with Douglas Fairbanks. It's here on You Tube!! It was the film that opened the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd., in Hollywood, CA, in 1922. Five years before the Grauman's Chinese opened on Hollywood Blvd in 1927 (with Cecil B. DeMille's "The King of Kings")!
I remember them both well, having grown up going to movies there. The Egyptian was gutted and the interior is totally modern now. Only the exterior remains. I think Grauman's Chinese has been restored with many original features remaining. Thanks for the info about Fairbanks' Robin Hood in 1922. I didn't know that was the inaugural feature at the Egyptian. My first 'Egyptian' memory is of "The Ten Commandments" in 1955. I found my original program and sold it at a yard sale 8 years ago.
For a long time, I thought the cameramen put a dark filter on the lens to simulate night shots, but it is explained here that they would under-develop the film to make it night.
Love this film so very much!! I did notice one other slight mistake when they were making the film towards the very end where Robin slays Sir Guy. As he leaps off the staircase and lands beside Guy's body, you can see Basil Rathbone twitch slightly. Thought the other film buffs might want to know about it :) Thanks for the upload!!
@@markrubin9449 Have you ever seen The Rocketeer? In reality Errol Flynn was a nazi sympathizer and they played it up in The Rocketeer-even replicating the scene you mentioned.
@@The_Dudester That was just trash written by unscrupulous biographer Higham for sensationalistic publicity. Robin Hood of the Ballads say King was Edward.. a Prioress of Kirkly..here we go.. a Prioress is a woman in charge of nuns.. and Kirkly in 1400s England during reign of King Edward means "Church Fields".. later on, that place Kirkly was renamed the Benefice of Lower Wensleydale.. there are 6 churches there that make a face.. Look at St. Marys Church.. just about 350 yards east is Hornby Castle.. Home of the Conyers at one time.. Sir John Conyers Jr was the Robin Hood of the Ballads aka Robin of Redesdale.. just not the first to use name... he was leader of the York Knights.. Sir Robert Hulderne was Robin of Holderness..he was Captain of the York Rebels.. there is only one record of a man using name Friar Tuck in 1417 and 1429.. Sir John Conyers was in mid 20s age when he met Friar Tuck age mid 50s : )
They were workmanlike in their work, not artsy in their art. All costume drama today is tongue-in-cheek, playing acting at dress-up. Back then, the actors, no matter how young they were, were men. Today, the actors, no matter how old they are, are boys.
Man popping up was probably there to ensure the safety of the stunt double. Just that, well, since it's 1938, you don't quite have the communication in the ear to tell him "Stay down, stupid!"
A fantastic film ... but I'd prefer that they ended it with the scene shown here, of Robin and Marian riding horseback off into the distance over beauteous English landscape.
This was filmed on the Warner Ranch in the western San Fernando Valley, about where Oxnard Blvd. is now. Today it is Warner Business Park. Then, there were rolling green hills dotted with ancient oak trees in all directions. I grew up a few miles from there, at the tail end of that era, a few years after WWII. There were horse ranches and farms before there were parking lots and suburban housing tracts. The Ventura Freeway caused the forced re-location of our house, via eminent domain, in 1956.
There is a big mistake in the movie towards the end when Mutch The Miler's son is fighting with one of the Sherrif''s men. A station wagon can be clearly seen driving across the background. Still an alltime great though.
One of my all time favorite films. Both Errol and Olivia were wonderful in this.❤️❤️❤️

I beg to differ but, in my opinion the 1976 movie 'Robin And Marian' starring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn was a far better version.
It was not to bad but it only related partly to what we all know about Robin Hood.
Errol and Olivia two of my all time favorites
Flynn had that "once in a generation" kind of charisma
I agree that the final outtake scene with Robin and Marian riding off in the sunset should have been edited out. Seeing the doors of the castle closing after the two leave symbolizes the closing of the story.

Marion, "Why do you hate The Normans so much ?"
Robin, "It's injustice I hate, not The Normans".
That response has stayed with me since I was a goggle eyed lad soaking up every scene containing the Mighty Flynn.
